heartFrom My

Bright Futures is the official newsletter of ProvidencePlace. We welcome your comments, suggestionsand ideas.

My heart was filled with joy as we began this NewYear, knowing we are now reaching more peoplewho need the services we offer through CHI andAction Adoption. So often last year, we saw andread tragic stories in the newspaper and ontelevision. More awareness about the loving choiceof adoption can reduce such heartache.

We are meeting new church audiences to educatethem about our range of services for pregnantteens and young women, children and youngadults with disabilities. Our first Pancake Breakfast

for church leaders in August was stimulated by a real situation where apastor did not know where to turn when two members of his congregationapproached him, desperate for help with their high school son withdisabilities. Had his wife, Terry Levine-Trevino, not been working atProvidence Place, this story might not have had such a happy ending.

I cannot say enough about our leadership team, which we rounded out lastyear with Terry’s addition. She brings a wealth of pastoral and corporateexperience to her role as Development Director. We are very well positionedto move forward on many fronts with our new team: Judith Bell, with adoctorate in early childhood development and now with us for two yearsas Chief Operating Officer; Regina Murphy, CHI Director, who joined usfrom DARS and has years of counseling and education experience. ChaplainCarol Williams and I are the old-timers and stimulated by the new ideasand collegial thinking. We have many new initiatives under our Ectropiaumbrella that add so much to our community. There is palpable new vitality.

We have great hope for our Horticulture Training Center, blossoming inmore ways than one under Robert Kwiatkowski’s gentle guidance. Ourstudents are enthralled with this new opportunity for work training. Wehave been blessed with volunteer support from people helping us withpainting and other campus projects, as well as with our mailings and clericalwork. These projects align with our developing campus master plan, whichis helping us move toward enhancing the "campus experience" for everyonewho lives and works here.

We know none of this would be possible without your continuingendorsement. We deeply appreciate your supportive spirit and generositythat enable us to continue Giving God’s Children a Faith, a Family, a Future.

Many of his students come from urbansituations and their learning starts at themost basic level.

"We actually teach them how to holdand use a hoe or a rake in the garden,"he said. "Many students have never seena garden tool of any kind, let alone knowhow to use it. But they catch on quickly!"

He’s proud of his chicken coop, introducedlast May and populated with day-oldchicks that grew into egg-laying hens bySeptember. His Cinnamon Queens, BarredRocks and brown and black Leghornsproduce enough eggs for the campuskitchen and more. He sells the overflow,as he did in the summer with his tomatoand vegetable crops, on Craigslist.Horticulture students have mandatorychicken duty once a week, and othervolunteers help feed the chickens, makesure they have adequate clean water andcollect the eggs. The work is both ateaching and a therapy tool.

Robert has also given substantial timeto community involvement, completingthe Master Gardener course andbuilding relationships that will help hisstudents into internships andpermanent jobs. He’s also writing grantsand dreaming up projects that can besold on the retail market.

Besides the Good Reasons seasonings thestudents helped pack and market last

year, he’s looking at pecan tins and giftbaskets, as well as a do-it-yourself raisedgarden kit of Western red cedar thatRainbow Gardens nursery is consideringselling through its retail store.

"Anyone can put it together in five minuteswith just a Phillips screwdriver," he said."The perfect gift for a grandchild."

Clockwise, front top: CHI students Robyn Johns, left, and Bethany Butler work in the garden; HTC Manager Robert Kwiatkowski assembles a redcedar raised bed from his kit; Providence Place found a buyer on Craigslist for the overabundance of fresh eggs daily; Students pose with featheredfriends at the new hen house. The Horticulture Training Center is wellinto its second year of operations andalready has three classes under its belt.Robert Kwiatkowski was upbeat as hedescribed the year’s progress and plansfor the year ahead.

"We started with close to nothing," hesaid. "And now we have a curriculumthat is seriously getting our students readyfor jobs in horticulture. He explainedthat the classes are currently limited toseven students "because that’s how manyfit in a van when we go on field trips."

Besides work in the garden at ProvidencePlace and learning the basics of botanyand biology, the students learn to prepareand cook what they grow, as well as takefield trips to locations, such as the BotanicGardens and the Warrior and FamilySupport Center at Brooke Army MedicalCenter, where they volunteer their timeto help with seasonal projects, gainingnew knowledge and experience in return. They also see people putting into practicewhat they learn in class and gain a senseof community.

Nick Garza, an HTC student, is excited."Robert teaches us that growing yourown plants takes time and care. It’s a lotof fun to watch the crops we plant grow."Kevin Hormozi agreed: "If you showplants care, love and kindness, that’swhat you get back and now I feel that’show life works."

Jennifer Sample, Providence Place CEO, thanked them for thegift of their time, contributions and hard work, and shared somethoughts as she presented them with an appreciation award beforethe big feast began.

"Providence Place has so much to be thankful for this year," shesaid. "And we are especially grateful for so many selfless volunteerswho give of their time and support to those we serve."

Sitting around tables in the cafeteria sharing laughs andconversation while eating tasty food served by the ProvidencePlace Leadership Team, the campus community embraced thepurpose of the day, realizing the many blessings everyone enjoys, not the least of which is spending quality time with those theycare about.

"As a unified campus, we want to make sure everyone is able toexperience a Thanksgiving meal," said Terry Levine-Trevino,Development Director. "Unfortunately not all of our residentshave a home and a family to share this holiday with so I feelsuper blessed to be a part of their Thanksgiving here."

What turned out to be a long day, with lots of planning andcoordination, team members found yet again it was worth the timeand effort to see happy smiles on the faces of their community.

decked-up stage and signage made it official it wastime for the Third Annual Wanda Poppell Talent Show.

Although a competition, the lively atmosphere among theaudience members and the more than 20 CHI studentsperforming was fun, friendly and full of laughter.

Showered with high fives and hugs after taking their bow,the huge smiles on students’ faces were a clear indicationthey had given it their all.

For many performers that day, the talent show was anopportunity to show a different side of their personalities. Many in the audience commented on the students’ courageand talent and several performers left the crowd marvelingat their hidden capabilities.

"For some of our students with autism, having a slot offive minutes provides them boundaries, giving them theboost of confidence they need to break out of their shell,"said Ashley Lopez, Marketing Specialist, "and when theydo, it’s never short of amazing."

An array of talent, including an original song played on theharmonica, a piano cover of Michael Bolton’s "Go theDistance" and an opera version of Celine Dion’s "My Heartwill Go On" entertained the crowd for more than two hours.Others, taking a different route, performed impersonationsof famous movie characters as well as Providence Place teammembers, causing shrieks of laughter numerous times. Itwas a day of wonderful memories for everyone and WandaPoppell, now-retired Talent Show founder, closed out theshow with a challenge to everyone in the room "See ifyou can top this show next year." It will be a hard act tofollow, but who knows what’s possible.

An important message about being grateful in both thegood times and the bad was the theme for last November’sAnnual Thanksgiving Feast service. Joining together in thechapel to listen were birth mothers from Action Adoption, students from CHI, clients from HandsOn, the LIGHTProgram and Deborah’s House, as well as some of thevolunteers and board members who pulled together andmade the ProvPlace Beautification Project possible.

e couldn’t even pull our car intothe driveway before our families

were opening the car door asking to seehim," laughed first-time mom HillaryHutto. The day she and husband Chrisbrought their son, Noah, home toArlington for the first time, "everyone fellin love with him right then and there."

Two years earlier it was a different story.Having gone through two unsuccessfulrounds of in vitro fertilization and twoheartbreaking miscarriages, Hillary andChris knew they had to do something elseif they were to have a family. Friends whohad adopted through Providence Placeencouraged them to think about adoptionand they soon signed up to attend anAdoption Readiness Seminar (ARS) atProvidence Place in February 2013. Itwas a reassuring experience.

Just two months later, they had good newswhen a birth mother, Annabelle (namechanged for confidentiality), wanted tomeet them. She agreed to match and a seriesof meetings followed sonograms, birthingclasses and doctor visits. Then theunbelievable happened. Even though theyknew it was a possibility, the Huttos weredevastated when Annabelle decided toparent her baby.

adoption

"But Leah, one of our adoption counselors, looked at us and said, ’Annabelle said shecouldn’t have lived with herself if sheplaced her baby,’" Hillary said. "Then Iremembered something Chris had saidweeks earlier he said we would neverwant a birth mother to regret placing herbaby in our arms. We would want her tohave a feeling of doing the right thing eventhough it was extremely hard."

This gave them comfort and they went onhoping. On their eighth weddinganniversary, their phone rang again.

"Another birth mother, Donna, wanted tomeet us, so we booked a hotel and camestraight to San Antonio," Hillary said. "Wewere so honored when she selected us."Based on their experience, they were a littlewary and their sense of foreboding grewwhen the day Donna was to be induced, she seemed to have disappeared.

But it seemed Donna was equally nervousand frightened about what was to happen. She was greatly soothed when the Huttosreached out to reassure her of their lovefor her and her baby. She was induced afew days later, on September 17, 2013.Hillary was in the delivery room whenNoah was born, and it was love at firstsight for her.

"When he came out and the nurse heldhim up over the curtain it took my breathaway and all I could think was, he lookedjust like a Noah," she said.

While the paperwork was being finalized, baby Noah stayed with the Logans, a fosterfamily, for a week. But then he was theirs.

"When we were finally able to bring himhome, all our family was waiting for us inour driveway," smiled Hillary. "It was thebest feeling in the world. I just sat thereand took in that special moment."

Hillary & Chris Hutto’s Story:Bringing Noah Home

r

Now six months old, the Huttos lookforward to Noah’s finalization in March,as well as speaking at this year’s AdoptionReadiness Seminar at Providence Place, where they will be able to share their storywith couples wondering about adoption, just as they were almost a year ago.

"Looking back, I go through so manyemotions," Hillary said, "But I love tellingour story because it’s really special, and it’swhat led us to our sweet Noah."

commonly known as the Providence Placebeautification project. The photos showthe transformation in progress.

"There’s not much color now because ofall the freezes," Judith laughed when shetook a tour in January. "But everyone isenjoying the makeover and commentingabout how nice everything looks. It’s beena very satisfying project for everyone."

There’s new landscaping in two majorareas, the outdoor basketball court, whereboth students and staff tend to gatherduring the day and the quadrangle in frontof the dormitory.

The basketball court has fresh asphalt, newviewing areas, tiered landscaping and shinynew picnic tables, all the result of purchased

and donated lumber, plants and othermaterials from several area Lowe’s stores. The project involved hundreds ofvolunteer hours from Lowe’s, the HealthScience Center and UTSA, as well as CHIstudents to supervise and coordinate thelabor-intensive project and ProvidencePlace paid for a company to do theresurfacing.

At the time the work took place, CEOJennifer Sample commented to the media,"This is one of the most central and mosthighly used places on our campus and isintegral to implementation of our newcampus master plan. It is extraordinarythat Lowe’s and its volunteer team cameto us with such a wonderful projectproposal at this point in time."

Lowe’s in San Antonio has been involvedwith the Center for Higher Independenceat Providence Place for the past year, providing specialized, business-orientedtraining for students enrolled in the

program that teaches life and work skills toyoung adults with disabilities to preparethem for living more independently.

The quadrangle project also features tieredlandscaping, new picnic tables and rocksintroduced to help with drainage, but whichalso provide aesthetic appeal, perfect for anarea that is considered a reflection garden.

"The rocks are working on both fronts,"Judith said. "And this lovely, sunny spaceis really becoming a place where ourcommunity both students and membersof the Providence Place team cometogether in a very natural way for meetingsand just to talk and relax."

In the future, the plan is to build arbors inthese areas for more shade in the summer, and possibly some hammocks. Alreadystudents are using the benches and tablesand these spaces and others in the monthsahead as the master plan is finalized andunderway help create the sense ofcommunity that is so much a part of whatProvidence Place is.

component to the original health literacycurriculum that includes hygiene andnutrition education, medicationmanagement, first aid and communication,or learning how to discuss health topicsand concerns effectively with a provider, whether a nurse, doctor, dentist or therapist.

Since the Health Science Center studentscome from Nursing, Physical andOccupational Therapy, Medicine andDentistry, there is a wide range of discussiontopics and activities.

Hayden Joseph and Morgan Floyd, twosecond-year medical students who headedthe project last year, said running theprogram twice a week over 20 weeks madea huge difference as they were able to buildrelationships with the CHI students, andwere very pleased that 23 stuck with theprogram through the conclusion.

The CHI students also clearly enjoyed thetime Jasmine Nelson, who participated

in the 6 p.m. classes, said, "I always lookedforward to the days they came because Ialways learned something new aboutexercising properly and eating healthy."

The medical students themselves gainedfrom the classes, saying it would greatlyhelp their patient interaction as they movedinto their clinical years at medical school.

"This was an awesome population thathelped me to listen harder and quiz thestudents to make sure they got it," Morgansaid. "I learned that everyone is differentand they all learn in different ways."

Hayden, who had thought it might bedifficult to make every session because oftheir own rigorous schedule, said theymade all the meetings and every time, itwas a great break from medical school.

"This was never something we felt we had to do it really was a great project,"he said. Both agreed they would stay

involved in the upcoming year to somedegree based on the demands of theirthird-year schedule.

The two incoming leaders are bothOccupational Therapy students. As a resultof the closer involvement, the Health ScienceCenter students have also been volunteersin Providence Place projects like the outdoorbasketball court last fall. Many of the HSCstudents have had little, if any, exposure topeople with disabilities, and the experiencehas given them greater awareness of theissues and heightened their empathy forsocial and work issues they face.

In the upcoming year, HSC students willcomplete pre- and post- mini-functionalcapacity (MFC) evaluations scaled downfor the CHI students after the weeklytraining programs to determine how wellstudents with different disabilities (reducedgrip strength or muscle tone) functionwith different exercises. The programstresses kinesthetic learning, where studentslearn through a physical activity, ratherthan just auditory learning.

With the emphasis on health and wellnessthrough the Impact3 program, the classesfit in well with Providence Place’s increasedemphasis on health and wellness. Fromher point of view in community servicelearning, Melanie Stone is pleased to seeher students excited by the program andseeing tangible results with increased socialskills among the CHI students and aninterest in doing more physical activity ontheir own.

CHI student Jennifer Alvarez shows off her list of what’s hot and what’s not in nutrition.

The re-opening of the Volunteers ofAmerica (VOA) Light program buildingmeans the completion of all renovationof residential facilities on campus,Jennifer Sample, Providence Place CEO,noted recently.

The changes to this facility are especiallymeaningful, she said, as the space nowaccommodates 47 women and childrenin the same square footage as it hadaccommodated 28 previously, a fact thatU.S. Congressman Joaquin Castro notedin a recent letter of commendation toProvidence Place.

"This award is a testament to ProvidencePlace’s commitment to serving our city’shomeless women and their children," hewrote, "Thank you for all that you do forthe residents of San Antonio."

"We had planned just to repaint and doa general update," Jennifer said. "But ourarchitects and space planners saw that

9Providence Place | Spring 2014

we could maximize usage of the spacethrough more efficient space planning."In fact, the rearrangement has not onlyincreased bedroom space, but has alsoexpanded the childcare area by about50 percent.

"We also found that increasing theavailable space meant that we wereeligible for more funding from the FederalHome Loan Bank up to $400,000 because we would be able to serve morelow-income and homeless women andchildren," Jennifer added. "That was agreat incentive." The funds came as anAffordable Housing Program grantthough Broadway National Bank.

The VOA program, which has been on theProvidence Place campus for almost 10years, serves women previously incarcer-ated and in recovery from substance abuse, who are now reunited with their childrenup to age eight. The campus facility hadalways had a long waiting list and the newavailability of residential space has greatlyeased this concern.

Women in the VOA are responsible forthe care of their children and theprogram offers parenting classes andmakes secure childcare space availableto mothers when they attend required

counseling classes. Although primarilywithin the building, the mothers and theirchildren can also participate in the manycampus activities during the year, includingProvidence Place Chaplain Carol Williams’bible study classes.

"It’s a wonderful experience for me and thewomen really welcome the bible study, "Carol said. "These ladies are hungry for theword of God. I find it inspiring on a verydeep level."
