Just One More Reminder....By Sister Jane Stoecker, SSJ, General Superior

The feast of the Epiphany of the Lord is traditionally celebrated on the 12th day after Christmas and it reminds me of the song, “The Twelve Days of Christmas,” but before we all break into song, I would like to focus on the Epiphany first. In the United States, the feast is celebrated on the Sunday between January 1st - 8th. It reminds us of the manifestation of Christ to the Gentiles as represented by the Magi (Matthew 2:1-12). In my extended curiosity, I went to Dictionary.com to read how our present society would define “Epiphany.” The clarity was somewhat surprising to me as I read: “Epiphany – a sudden intuitive perception of or insight into the reality or essential meaning of something, usually initiated by some simple, homely or common place occurrence or experience.” Yes! To all expectations, this poor, humble birth, was the manifestation of the promised Messiah! THIS is what the Magi got; these three Kings, Wise Men, men with wisdom; they understood the reality of this Savior’s Birth! The long-awaited Savior, Jesus, is with us and among us! Simple, homely and in the everyday occurrences, Christ is born and now lives among us!

The custom of the Epiphany Blessing is a prayerful ritual reminding us of the Lord’s presence with us. This tradition of blessing the doorways of the home (or other buildings) symbolizes the family’s commitment to welcome Christ into their homes on a daily basis through the year. “Christ bless this home.” Below is a simple variation of the Epiphany Blessing. You can find similar forms online. May this Epiphany Blessing interest you enough to become one more reminder each year of God’s love, mercy and presence with us and among us, even in each of our family members!

And by the way, if you are curious about the Catholic hidden meaning of the 12 days of Christmas, you can find it at catholicculture.org./origin of 12 days of Christmas

Epiphany BlessingLeader: God’s peace be in this house.

All: And in all who live here.

Antiphon All: The star burned like a flame, pointing the way to God, the King of kings; the wise men saw the sign and brought their gifts in homage to their great King.

Leader: Bless, O Lord, this house + and all who live within. All: Allow all of us to find in it a shelter of peace and health, forgiveness, humility, goodness, mildness, love, honesty, and thanks to God, Father, Son and Holy Spirit. Inspire each of us to develop our individual talents and to contribute wisdom and good works for the benefit of the whole human family.

Make our home a haven for us all, and a place of welcome, warmth and care for all our dear neighbors who come to us. Enlighten us with the brilliance of your Epiphany star, so that we might clearly see our way to You and discover You in our work and leisure.

All Repeat Antiphon: The star burned…

Leader: + Bless this chalk. May those who use it with faith in your holy name and inscribe the names of Caspar, Melchior, and Balthasar, enjoy health in body and protection of soul; through Christ our Lord.

All:Christus Mansionem benedicatMay Christ bless this house!

Final inscription on the lintel should read: 20 + C + M + B + 18

“The three wise men,Casper, (inscribe ‘C’ on the lintel)Melchior, (inscribe ‘M’ on lintel)Balthasar (inscribe ‘B’ on lintel)Followed the star of God’s Son who became manTwo thousand (inscribe the ‘20’ on the left)18 years ago (inscribe the last part of the year on right) May Christ bless our dwelling, (place + after ‘20’)And remain with us throughout the new year (+ after ‘C’)And grant that our comings and goings (+ after ‘M’)Will be in search of truth. (Go from room to room, blessing each room with holy water. Each door may also be signed with the Epiphany inscription).

Jubilee 2016 Love Letters from LourdesBy Mrs. Patricia Poticny, BSN, RN Lourdes Hall Adminstrator

The Sisters of Our Lady of Lourdes Convent send their love and continued prayers to all of their family and friends, as well as to the “dear neighbors” who continue to be at the heart of so much of what the Sisters do.

There are now 18 Sisters living and working at Lourdes. The rhythm of prayer and work flows in and around the day to day challenges of aging in a community setting. It is a blessing to see the Sisters support one another, encourage one another and take the time to offer words of affirmation to their Sisters and the staff working with them.

It has been a busy few months since the last Love Letter from Lourdes. The Sisters continue in several convent-based outreach ministries, with each Sister contributing time, talent and treasure, on behalf of the “Dear Neighbor.” In addition to the hand work the Sisters have been doing for the babies at Flagler hospital and for adult hospice patients, the monthly baking for the homeless and letters for the incarcerated, the Sisters at Lourdes are providing weekly Communion to a local nursing home, spiritual direction, weekly centering prayer, and of course daily prayer for the intentions of many people. In December, the Sisters of Lourdes will be singing at a local nursing home to bring joy and comfort to the residents and staff. Outreach isn’t always about heavy lifting or major impact. Sometimes a joyful heart and a gentle smile, can reach a lonely heart in a special way. The Sisters may just take this show on the road!

If you live in St. Augustine, you may have seen the Sisters out and about in a white bus, with the Sisters of St. Joseph logo on it. The Sisters are being driven to appointments, to church events, to deliver donations to recipients, and to stay in touch with the world around them. This beautiful bus, with its wheelchair lift, is

a direct answer to prayer and will be put to good use for years to come.

For the second season in a row, a hurricane tested the endurance of the Sisters at Lourdes as they evacuated for their safety. Although going to the Motherhouse was less traumatic than going to a shelter, as the Sisters did after Matthew, it was still a major adjustment for the Lourdes Sisters. However, at any given moment in the days at the Motherhouse, the Lourdes Sisters could be seen working on hurricane relief bags, praying and singing together, listening to Mass, and lifting up each other’s spirits.

The summer of 2017 brought to us a much needed, and long awaited, ADA compliant shower room. Lourdes Hall is a place where the Sisters’ health and safety are paramount. The Sisters patiently waited for three months for a complete renovation of the combination shower room, therapy tub room, and hair care area. When the ceiling isn’t falling in, when heat lamps create a more comfortable atmosphere, and the showers are big enough for a wheelchair, everyone’s experience is more relaxed and positive.

The shower room was one of several major projects currently needed for Lourdes to continue to provide a safe and healthy house of prayer. The Mission Statement for the Sisters at Lourdes states: “Our Lady of Lourdes Convent is a House of Prayer, not built of brick but of living stones. We are attentive to the Voice of God. Mindful of our limitations, sufferings, and giftedness, we continually strive towards sacrificial love and unity among ourselves and among every neighbor.” An inspirational Mission Statement to be sure, however, to maintain this beautiful house of prayer, there is a continued need for upkeep, repairs and renovation. Please consider a gift to the Retired Sisters of St. Joseph at Our Lady of Lourdes Convent. It will be accepted with heartfelt joy and prayers for you and your family.

Notes from the Motherhouse: How the Motherhouse came to be built on St. George StreetBy Sister Carol Stovall, SSJ / Motherhouse Coordinator /Administrator

How did the Sisters of St. Joseph come to own property and build a three-story Motherhouse on St. George Street in St. Augustine, Florida? Most people who know us are familiar with how we came to Florida at the invitation of Bishop Augustin Verot to teach the newly freed slaves and their children after the Civil War. However, few know the story of how the early sisters came to own land and build a house in the 1870s. That story begins with the story of Father Michael (Miguel) O’Reilly.

Fr. Michael O’Reilly was born in County Longford, Ireland in 1752. He grew up during a time when the Catholic Church was persecuted in his country so he was smuggled out to Spain where he studied for the priesthood in Salamanca and was ordained there in 1778. Thus his name changed from Michael to Miguel.

According to Sister Thomas Joseph McGoldrick, Director of the Fr. Miguel O’Reilly House Museum, he went to serve the Church in Cuba after

ordination and was then sent to St. Augustine to minister to the Minorcans. He arrived in St. Augustine in 1784 and was assistant pastor of the parish church. In 1785 he bought property at 32 Aviles Street that became the church rectory. Several years later he was named pastor of the St. Augustine parish and in 1795 was named Vicario of East Florida for Cuba. In 1797 he dedicated a new parish church (now the Cathedral-Basilica).

Fr. O’Reilly became the teacher and mentor of a young Cuban, Felix Varela, from about 1791 to 1802. Varela was living with his grandparents at the Castillo de San Marcos in St. Augustine where Varela’s grandfather was the commandant of the Cuban forces at the fort. Instead of becoming a soldier as was traditional in his family,

Varela entered the priesthood in 1811. In 1812 Fr. Miguel O’Reilly died

after serving in St. Augustine for 28 years. Before he died, in 1803, he wrote a will leaving his house and property on St. George Street to be held in trust for the building of a house for nuns for education following the plan of St. Francis de Sales. His brother served as executor of the trust until the Diocese of St. Augustine was formed in 1870.

The first eight Sisters of St. Joseph who came to St. Augustine lived in the O’Reilly House after staying with the Sisters of Mercy. The first floor was used as classrooms, the second floor was a chapel, and the third floor was their dormitory. After they received six postulants, they had to move to a bigger house located on Charlotte Street.

“Bishop Verot laid the cornerstone of the three-story coquina convent on Jan. 15, 1874. The deed to the property was conveyed to the sisters when their civil status was legalized in 1876. The Convent of the Sisters of St. Joseph of St. Augustine was chartered: “to teach children and to practice works of mercy, visiting the sick, prisons, etc.” (p. 185 of Beyond the Call, by Sister Thomas Joseph McGoldrick)

Miguel O’Reilly House Museum: Stirring up a little dust, and making all things great again!By Deborah Guglielmo, Miguel O’Reilly House Museum Designer

As the season changed, and we “fell back” with our time clocks, there was one thing that moved forward at a great pace. Sister Thomas Joseph McGoldrick, Curator of the Father Miguel O’Reilly House, began complete refurbishment of the House Museum. From complete painting inside and out, and making repairs along the way, this work showed how much this “Spring Cleaning” made dramatic improvements. It had been 12 years since the initial and complete restoration of the House was done.

I returned to help with this cleaning from when it was originally done along with Sister Bernard Joseph and

my daughter, Emily. Great energy and loving effort went into this cleaning and refurbishment, along with many upgrades with the exhibits. The work rapidly progressed.

The First Floor and Madonna Room opened for tours the beginning of December, with the remaining displays ready before the spring.

There’s a Special Place in Heaven for Convent CatsBy Peepers (with a little help from Sister Suzan Foster, SSJ)

About 5 years ago I set out to find a place to live out my remaining feral feline lives. I had a good home, but college kids are upwardly mobile and something more permanent and definitely quieter appealed to me.

My friend GG (Gorgeous Girl) is the Matriarch of the convent complex. From her I learned about the Sisters and, if I came to live there, what would be my feline role as part of convent security – Kitty Kat Patrol!

GG lovingly spoke of our benefactor “Mr. Joe” (Klekotta). God works in strange ways! Through the wonders of technology, Mr. Joe, who lives in Michigan, became acquainted with Sister Bernard Joseph, our convent philatelist. His own two cats are now our “northern cousins” and his generosity extends to our four-pawed community.

I have truly found a family! My “mom” is Sister Mary Alexius, who watches over me, feeds me, and worries when I don’t show. Through the years the Sisters have donned special roles for my care – those who hold and pet me, give me back rubs, fetch my treats.

Sometimes I sit on the porch and join in with the Sisters at Mass and prayers. Those are the times when I know that I am truly a Convent Cat!

Mr. Joe Klekotta, benefactor of the cats of the Motherhouse.

Rest in Peace Pioneer Parishioners of St. AugustineBy Staff

Sister Bernard Joseph, SSJ, is a member of the St. Augustine Historical Society and during one of their 6 month digs on Charlotte Street in St. Augustine they unearthed the graves of more than 30 colonists living in St. Augustine 300-400 years ago.

Father Tom Willis, Rector of the Cathedral Basilica of St. Augustine, was invited to bless the location of graves beneath the cobblestones of Charlotte Street in tribute to these pioneers and in respect of their lives and the contributions they made to the community of St. Augustine.

Jubilee 2017Celebrating the 60th Jubilee of Four Sisters

Saturday, October 15, 2017, hundreds gathered to honor a collective 240 years of serving the people of Florida by Sisters Florence Bryan, Elizabeth Ann McCormick, Joyce and Loyce Newton as Jubilarians of the Sisters of St. Joseph.

Bishop Felipe J. Estévez of St. Augustine welcomed guests to a beautiful Mass at the Cathedral Basilica and Father Tom Willis preached a Homily reminding us all of the importance of Jubilee and of the work of these Sisters.

The Sisters of St. Joseph were originally called in 1866 by Bishop Augustine Verot to teach and catechize the thousands of children freed from slavery. For the past 151 years Sisters have continued this legacy by opening schools and missions throughout the state of Florida in service to the “dear neighbor.”

Jubilee is celebrated each year on the Saturday closest to the Sisters’ “founders’ day” which is on October 15th. The Sisters were originally founded to serve the poor in 1655 in Le Puy, France. For more information about the Sisters of St. Joseph of St. Augustine, FL please visit at www.ssjfl.org

Sister Florence Bryan, SSJ

Sister Florence Bryan was born in Jacksonville, FL, the youngest of Bill and Loretta Bryan’s three children. She attended catechetical classes with the Sisters of St. Joseph at St. Paul’s Parish and Our Lady of the Angels Parish before attending St. Paul’s Grade School, Bishop Kenny High School and St. Joseph Academy in St. Augustine.

Florence entered the community in 1957. As a novice she given the name Sister Loretta Joseph, by which she was known until Vatican Council II prompted the return to her Baptismal name.

Sister Florence completed a BA and MS in Mathematics and taught at St. Joseph College in Jensen Beach. She served in congregational leadership, intermittently for twenty-seven years – sometimes full-time, sometime part-time – including 8 years as General Superior (1994-2002). In between terms in leadership Sister studied Formative Spirituality and, subsequently, served in Formation Ministry in the congregation, in campus ministry at UNF and JU, and in the spiritual formation and ministry placement of post-collegiate men and women through Catholic Volunteers in Florida. Sister served as a parish minister at St. Edward Parish in Palm Beach 2012-16.

Presently, Sister Coordinates the Formation/Discernment Community of the Congregation at St. Joseph Convent in Jacksonville and serves as DRE at St. Paul’s Parish, Riverside—where the journey began at Baptism! Sister Florence is grateful for all the wonderful companions she has known along the way these 60 years.

Sister Elizabeth Ann McCormick, SSJ

Sister Elizabeth Ann McCormick, daughter of Mary and Thomas McCormick, was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, the middle child, with an older sister, Catherine, and a younger brother, Raymond.

She believes the seeds of her vocation to religious life began in first grade when she was taught by the Sisters of St. Joseph of Chestnut Hill. In sixth grade, sister moved with her family to Wildwood, New Jersey, where she was taught again by the Sisters of St. Joseph of Chestnut Hill.

Searching for work, Thomas moved his family to Miami, where Sister Elizabeth Ann attended St. Mary's School and Notre Dame Academy, taught by the Sisters of St. Joseph of St. Augustine. During her high school years, the seeds of her vocation grew deeper and stronger. The Sisters at Notre Dame shared about the call to religious life.

She entered the novitiate of the Sisters of St. Joseph of St. Augustine on August 11, 1957. Sister Elizabeth Ann received her BA Degree in education from Incarnate Word College, San Antonio, Texas. For many years, she served as teacher of primary grades, and as school librarian.

Sister was called to serve her congregation as General Superior for two consecutive terms, having already served as a Councilor of the congregation for two terms.

Sister Elizabeth Ann delights in the Lord as she celebrates her 60th Jubilee!

Sister Joyce Marie Newton, SSJ

Sister Joyce Marie Newton, SSJ, is the twin of Sister Mary Loyce Newton. In 1949, she moved with her beloved parents, Spencer and Marie Newton, and family to Miami where she grew up, attending St. Mary's Elementary School and Notre Dame Academy High School, where she was taught by the Sisters of St. Joseph of St. Augustine.

She entered Mount St. Joseph Novitiate in Jensen Beach, Florida in 1957. Sister received her BS Degree in History at Spring Hill College, Mobile, Alabama, and her MA Degree in Religious Studies from Barry University, Miami.

While spending time studying Spanish in Mexico, Sister Joyce was privileged to visit the Basilica of her patron saint, Our Lady of Guadalupe. Sister was in the teaching ministry for over thirty-seven years, teaching every grade from first through high school and adults in parish ministry. She served for 11 years as a nationally-certified chaplain at Mercy Hospital in Miami.

Sister Joyce is grateful to God for her 60 years, serving the People of God throughout the state of Florida. Her prayer today is that of her mother, Mary: "My soul proclaims the greatness of the Lord; my spirit rejoices in God my Savior!"

Sister Mary Loyce Newton, SSJ

Sister Mary Loyce Newton, SSJ, was born at home, along with her identical twin sister, Sister Joyce Newton, on July 13, 1939, in Lebanon Junction, Kentucky. Lastly, for 13 years, Sister served as a certified chaplain in the healing ministry at Mercy Hospital, Miami. Sister Loyce humbly thanks God for His call and grace of serving the Church in Florida for 60 years.

Portrait of Harriet Beecher Stowe by Francis Holl, 1853

Harriet Beecher Stowe and the Pioneer Sisters of St. Joseph, Mandarin, FLBy Sandy Arpen, President, Mandarin Historical Society

Ever since we decided to save the old St. Joseph's Schoolhouse in Mandarin, I have wondered aloud: Did the Sisters and Harriet Beecher Stowe ever meet? I saw no evidence of such in any readings I did and yet I felt that they certainly would have met. They were in Mandarin doing similar work at the same time.

This week I finally found the answer in the book Harriet Beecher Stowe - The Story of her Life, (pub.1911) written by her son Charles and grandson Lyman and based on interviews with her.

"Way back in the woods in a barren clearing among the whispering trees was a little Roman Catholic church, blistering in the tropical sun. Adjoining it was a nunnery where lived three French Sisters of the Church. Nearby in a little hut lived an

Italian priest, Father Batazzi. If ever the spirit of the Christ dwelt in human souls, it dwelt in these self-sacrificing representatives of the Roman Catholic Church. Once or twice a month Fly (her mule) was harnessed into the mule cart, and Professor (Calvin Stowe, her husband) and his wife (Harriet) started with baskets of oranges and packages of all sorts of creature- comforts to visit Father Batazzi and the Sisters. When they met there was no Catholic or Protestant but an absolute oneness of spirit."

This find - that was right there in our library all the time - made me very happy! Indeed they did know each other and they had a relationship. This made my history day and I hope it does yours as well.

NOTE: The Mandarin Museum and Historical Society partnered with Councilman Matt Schellenberg, the Mandarin Community

Club and the City of Jacksonville Parks and Recreation Department to save the last remaining one-room schoolhouse in Duval County and relocate it to Walter Jones Historical Park in Mandarin. The school was rededicated to the community in 2016 with Sister Thomas Joseph McGoldrick, SSJ, author of Beyond the Call the historical story of the Sisters and their missionary work in Florida.

- Sister Grace Ford, SSJ –Professes Her Temporary Vows as a Sister of St. Joseph

On June 4th, the feast of Pentecost, Sister Grace Ford made her first profession of the three vows of chastity, poverty, and obedience in the Congregation of the Sisters of St. Joseph of St. Augustine, Florida. This profession comes following three years of life with the community and reflection on the vows, the charism of religious life in the Church, and the history and spirituality of

the Sisters of St. Joseph. The vows were received by Sister Jane Stoecker, General Superior, in the presence of Bishop Felipe Estevez, Bishop of St. Augustine who celebrated the liturgy. The small Motherhouse chapel was filled with members of the congregation and a few persons who have been a significant part of her journey to this day, including her son, John.

~ Villa Flora ~ Renewal ~ the Dream of Sister Mary Christine ~In 2007 Sister Mary Christine Zimorski, SSJ was missioned as administrator to the Villa Flora-Brown Hall Renewal Center in St.

Augustine. Upon arriving, she found a very worn and used facility with significant historic and spiritual roots. Sister found the Villa Flora covered in mold with structural problems, a leaking roof and leaky stained glass windows. The glory of the past was gone. Visions of what could be done with the beautiful old building danced in her dreams and in her prayers. Sister called together a committee and a plan was put in place to restore and renew the old building. Sadly, Sister passed before her dreams could come true. To honor Sister and help to help make her dream come true ~ Windows of the Villa ~ project was created with opportunities for all of the dear neighbors of the Sisters to be a part of this magnificent renewal project.

A total of 34 Stained Glass Windows on two levels of the Villa and the 9 Diamond Paneled Leaded Windows of Sister’s beloved library were made available for sponsorship. Each of the windows required work to restore them to their original loveliness.

Photos of some of the windows are below.

The magnificent stained glass windows of the front sitting room.

Some windows are still available for sponsorship by individuals or organizations.

Please visit www.ssjfl.org and click Villa Flora Renewal Center for the complete catalog.

Call 904-824-9100 or email [email protected] for more information.

“Well done, my good and faithful servant…Come, share your master’s joy.”

Matthew 25:23

Sister Mary Christine Zimorski, SSJNovember 1, 1941 – July 2, 2017

Sister Mary Christine, formerly known as Sister Stanislaus Marie, entered Religious Life on July 16,

1959 and served the people of God throughout the state of Florida for 56 years. Her teaching ministry began in 1961-62 at St. Joseph School, Winter Haven. The following year

she taught for two years at St. Theresa School, Coral Gables, and in 1964 was assigned to St. Patrick’s School, Gainesville.

In 1968 Sister was assigned to study for a year at Loyola University Campus, New Orleans, LA. Returning to Florida, she ministered for a year in the Diocese of Orlando Sisters-at-Large program. In 1970, a significant assignment was given to her: she entered the Institute of Formative Spirituality at Duquesne University, Pittsburg, PA. Upon the completion of the program, Sister became Directress of Formation from 1973-78 during which time she was teaching religion at St. Joseph Academy, St. Augustine.

In 1978, Sister Mary Christine was elected General Superior of the Congregation. While in that position, she stayed strongly involved with Mercy Hospital, Miami, where she served as chairperson and member on several of the hospital boards and SSJ Health System.

Upon completing her term of office as General Superior, Sister was assigned to St. Mary’s School, Miami, from 1987-96. In 1996, she served as Directress for the Office for Religious in the Archdiocese of Miami. In 1998-2002 Sister moved to North Miami to teach at St. James School. Sister continued to serve as Director of several Mercy Boards and was Director of Evangelization at St. Mary Cathedral from 2002-2007.

In 2007 Sister was missioned as administrator to the Villa Flora-Brown Hall Renewal Center in St. Augustine. Upon arriving, she found a very worn and used facility with significant historic and spiritual roots. Visions of what could be done with the beautiful old building danced in her dreams and in her prayers. The Villa Flora was covered in mold, had structural problems and a leaking roof and leaky stained glass windows. The glory of the past was gone. Sister called together a committee and a plan was put in place to restore and renew the old building….

And before her dream could come true she passed gently into eternal life on July 2, 2017. But her dream lives on….
