We hope you will visit the Bowden Collection, the newly installed art exhibit, that celebrates the 500th anniversary of the Reformation. The exhibit offers the viewer an

opportunity to celebrate the remarkable treasure that God has given humanity – the gift of the Bible. Martin Luther’s groundbreaking translation has made it possible for Christians over the last 500 years to read the Bible in the vernacular. The flood of translations into other languages that followed has changed the direction of the church and influenced countless lives. The exhibit is located in the South wing hallway, narthex and the Fellowship Hall hallway.

Continuing the Conversation A Moral Problem – Matthew 6:1-18

THINK – Living out our faith can be challenging at times. We are called to serve,

we are called to give, and we are called to live in certain ways. Jesus, though, makes even that a little more challenging as he calls into question our motives. We know why we should serve, give and live differently…as the Westminster Shorter Catechism says, we do this because our entire life should “glorify God, and enjoy God forever.” That’s the answer we know. Christ, though, instead of asking, “Why should you?” asks, “Why do you?” Are you giving of your time because you want some extra praise? Are you vocal about your faith because you simply want to stand out? Take time to reflect on your actions and ask, “What are my motives?” Are you seeking to glorify God, or do you want some of that glory yourself? The Good News in this text is that Jesus actually helps us respond to those questions; he helps us re-center our lives so God receives the glory, and he does so by teaching us to pray. We pray for God’s will, God’s Kingdom; we confess our need of God and confess our sins before God. So, why do you do what you do: is it for God, is it for you or is it a mix of both?

PRAY – This week reflect on the prayer Jesus taught us. We say it so often we

sometimes don’t even realize what we say. So take time to truly think about what you pray and what it means. Use the Lord’s Prayer not as just another piece of prayer, but as the prayer which creates the foundation of all of your prayer.

DO – Do something this week without telling anyone. Maybe you can give an

anonymous gift or show up to serve at an event or just set aside some extra time to spend reading scripture. Whatever you choose though, keep it between you and God.

Boundaries Training for Adult Volunteers in Children & Youth Ministries

January 27, 2018, at 10:00 a.m.-12:00 p.m. We take our responsibility for the care, discipleship and growth of our children and youth in our community seriously. We are instituting a new training for ALL volunteers working with children and youth. This training will focus on maintaining healthy boundaries in our relationships – from personal interactions to those involving technology and social media. If you are currently serving as a volunteer, please join us January 27. If you are unable to make this session, we will be holding additional workshops throughout the year. The workshop is open to the entire church community, so if you have an interest in serving in our children and/or youth ministry in the future, we invite you to join us as well. If you are interested in attending, please let the church office know by Wednesday, January 24, 2018. Materials will be provided. Please contact Pastor Lisa at [email protected] or Pastor Joel [email protected] if you would like more information.
