The Roman Army

The Romans were ruled by a Emperor who ruled something called the Roman Empire. It covered the whole of the Mediterranean Sea which included Europe, Africa and Asia. Here is a picture showing the Roman Empire:

They were so heavy that soldiers had to help each other to put them on.TunicThe tunic was worn underneath the armour. This was made of rough wool. It was not until later that short trousers were worn down below!HelmetCenturions and other Officers wore crests on the top of their helmets so that the other men could follow them in battle. The helmets helped to protect the head, face and neck in a battle.

contentsThe soldier's main weapons were a short sword for stabbing and a long spear, or javelin for throwing. The javelin had a sharp iron point, and a thin, bendy stick. When it hit an enemy's shield, the point stuck in, but the stick bent. This made it difficult to pull out.
