FROM THE DESK OF FR. LUKE... DEL ESCRITORIO DEL PADRE LUKE...

The scripture this Sunday provides for us a very

clear message for understanding Eucharistic theology. Jesus

states, "Amen, amen," in order to stress the importance of what

he is about to "say to you, [that] whoever believes" in what

he has to say will have the reward of "eternal life." The fact

of what we must believe is that Jesus is "the bread of life."

Christ then qualifies that belief: "Your ancestors ate the

manna in the desert, but they died". He is explaining to the

Israelites that the manna given to them before was never

the bread of life (the bread from heaven). Although it was a

powerful miracle and a sign of God's power and love for

the Israelite people, it was only food for the stomach. Jesus

goes on to explain that the manna was only temporary;

whereas "the bread that comes down from heaven...one may

eat it and not die. I am the living bread that came down from

heaven; whoever eats this bread will live forever; and the

bread that I will give is my flesh for the life of the world.”

Can Jesus be any clearer about what we must

believe to inherit the reward of eternity and how we are to

understand that belief? The Eucharist is Jesus Christ the Son

of God, our Lord and Savior. It is due to this fact that the

beginning of who we are as the Holy Catholic Church is

from the Eucharist and our Goal is the Eucharist. To summarize

in a nut shell our purpose as Catholics are to receive the

Eucharist, Jesus Christ the Son of God our Lord and Savior.

Is the reception of the Eucharist your priority? Do

you do all you can to be prepared for your God each week?

What barriers or other priorities are more important to you

then receiving God's gift of eternal Love?

La escritura de este domingo nos proporciona un

mensaje muy claro para comprender la teología eucarística.

Jesús dice: "Amén, amén", para enfatizar la importancia de

lo que está a punto de "decirles, [que] quien crea" en lo que

tiene que decir tendrá la recompensa de "vida eterna". El

hecho de lo que debemos creer es que Jesús es "el pan de

vida". Entonces Cristo califica esa creencia: "Tus antepasados

comieron el maná en el desierto, pero murieron". Él está expli-

cando a los Israelitas que el maná que se les había dado antes

nunca fue el pan de la vida (el pan del cielo). Aunque fue un

poderoso milagro y una señal del poder y el amor de Dios

Jesús continúa explicando que el maná era solo temporal;

mientras que "el pan que baja del cielo ... uno puede comerlo

y no morir. Yo soy el pan vivo que descendió del cielo; el

creer para heredar la recompensa de la eternidad y cómo

debemos entender esa creencia? La Eucaristía es Jesucristo,

el Hijo de Dios, nuestro Señor y Salvador. Es debido a este

hecho que el comienzo de quiénes somos como la Santa

Iglesia Católica proviene de la Eucaristía y nuestra meta

es la Eucaristía. Para resumir en pocas palabras, nuestro

propósito como católicos es recibir la Eucaristía, Jesucristo,

el Hijo de Dios, nuestro Señor y Salvador.

¿La recepción de la Eucaristía es tu prioridad?

¿Hagan todo lo posible para estar preparado para su Dios

todas las semanas? ¿Qué barreras u otras prioridades son más

importantes para usted que recibir el regalo de Dios del amor

eterno?

Kindergarten this year. As always if we have the volunteers

we can offer the program.

Maryruth Culver is a harpist and vocalist, born in Escondido, California. Many of you

may remember her as the little girl playing harp for masses here at St. Stephen’s. She

is featured across the United States and abroad, both as a soloist and member of various

ensembles. Maryruth offers a unique and skilled approach to repertoire for harp, and

repertoire not often heard on the harp including jazz and vocal performances to her

concerts. Maryruth is an alumnus of the internationally acclaimed harp ensemble

HarpFusion and is a current member of Crimson Harps (The University of Utah) and

LaRu (a harp combo based in Southern California). She is also currently the principal

harpist for the Salt Lake Symphony in Salt Lake City, Utah.

Maryruth has been featured on two of Harp Fusion’s albums (“Harp On Tour” and

“HarpFusion Live: The Cosmos Concert”) and toured extensively with the group. Some

of her tours included the countries of Mexico, Belgium, Holland, Lichtenstein, Austria,

Switzerland, Brazil and several locations throughout the Southwestern United States.

While living in Ireland, Maryruth performed with the Cuisle harp ensemble performing

both as harpist and vocalist.

As a soloist, Maryruth has performed both internationally and throughout the United

States. Some performances include a featured artist for the 4th Annual Rio de Janerio

Harp Festival in Brazil, performances in Ireland and solo recitals offered throughout

the Southwestern United States. Some of her commercial work have included regular

performances for the Ventana Resort in Tucson, the Westgate Hotel in San Diego, and

work with various recording artists in the Contemporary Christian music genre including

Matt Maher, Tom Booth, Jackie Francois, and Tatiana Cameron. She has also been

featured with various orchestral ensembles including The Poway Symphony and The

United States Marine Band.

Maryruth will be performing a diverse and exciting selection of harp repertoire including

Variations on a Theme of Paganini (M. Mchedelov) and Le Danse Des Sylphes by Felix

Godfroid, and she will also be performing her own arrangements of popular songs for

harp and voice.
