Before the Romans invaded in A.D. 43, the Celts ruled Britain. The Celts were divided up into different tribes

ruled by kings or chiefs who lived in hill forts.

In Celtic Britain there were no towns, as such. Most people were farmers who lived in round thatched

houses made from wood. There were no roads either, people would travel on dusty tracks or muddy paths

instead. And neighbouring tribes would often quarrel, which sometimes led to vicious battles between them.

Tribes would send out fierce warriors riding huge chariots to attack each other.

What do you think it would have been like living in

Celtic Britain?

Celts

In 55 B.C. Julius Caesar had conquered Gaul (modern day France) and was ready to conquer Britain. However, Caesar was not prepared for the staunch resistance put up by the Celts and so his attempt at

conquering Britain failed.

The Romans Invade!

In AD 43 the Roman Emperor (ruler) Claudius assembled a large Roman army on the north coast of France (known as Gaul then). Claudius had 20,000 Legionaries (soldiers who were Roman citizens) and 20,000 auxiliaries (soldiers who were not Roman citizens).

Look at source A-what would it have been like for the Romans fighting the

Celts?

“They begin by driving all over the field hurling spears and generally the terror inspired by the horses and the noise of the wheels is sufficient to throw their opponents into disorder…’

By daily training and practice they become so skilled that even on a steep incline they can control the horses at full gallop and stop then in a moment. They run along the chariot-pole, stand on the yoke and get back into the chariot as quick as lightning.’
