Berwyn to eliminate online payment convenience feesSUBURBAN LIFE MEDIA

BERWYN – Berwyn resi-dent who pay municipal feesonline are getting a gift ofsorts from the city the nexttime they pay their bills.

On l i n e t r an s a c t i o n sthrough Berwyn’s website willno longer charge residentsconvenience fees, and the citywill begin accept all majorcredit cards for online pay-ment, including Visa, Master-Card, Discover and AmericanExpress.

Assistant City Adminis-trator Evan Summers said

the move was “overdue” bythe city, and was enacted toincrease service delivery toresidents and embrace a moreproactive approach to govern-ment. The removal of conve-nience fees will go into effectat the start of 2015.

“There is nothing conve-nient about being chargedmore money than you owe,”Summers said in a news re-lease. “Mayor [Robert] Loverohas challenged staff to identifyareas where we can increaseservices to residents whilemitigating expenses to thebudget.”

The city of Berwyn uses thestate of Illinois’ e-Pay systemto accept online payments, which charges a nominaltransition fee for each onlinepayment received. Historical-ly, the city has passed the feeonto users via the conveniencefee. In 2015, the fee will be ab-sorbed by the city.

As an additional benefit toeliminating the transactionfee, the city of Berwyn will be-gin accepting Visa credit anddebit card payments throughthe city’s website. Previous-ly, Visa would not participatewith payment recipients that

charged separate fees for cardpurchases.

“Staff’s research has shownme that Visa has a nearly a 40percent market share of thecredit card market and 60 per-cent share of the debit cardmarket,” Mayor Lovero statedin the release. “By allowingmore of our residents to paytheir vehicle sticker or theirwater bill online, hopefully Ican save them money while re-ducingwait times at CityHall.”

Summers added he antici-pates the cost of the fees willbe offset by an increase in thecollection of outstanding bills.

SPRINGFIELD – Call it the mother of all perks. Ordinaryschmoes like you andme pile into our cars or board a trainwhen we want to travel elsewhere in Illinois. A plane ride isjust too expensive. But that’s not how state government’s tophonchos look at things. Folks like Speaker of the House MikeMadigan, Senate PresidentJohn Cullerton and Gov. PatQuinn are ferried about likechieftains in state-ownedexecutive aircraft. And theydon’t pay for this perk. We do.

In themany years I’ve beencovering the statehouse, one of the most sought after pieces ofinformation each week of legislative session is whenMadigan’splane is taking off. Madigan staffers and Department of Trans-portation pilots are milked for this inane piece of minutiae.

Why? Because it’s indicative of when legislative activitywill come to a stop and all the reporters, lobbyists and rank-and-file legislators can plan on going home, too.

On Tuesday, Gov.-elect Bruce Rauner answered a questionabout the state’s air fleet this way:

“I’m cheap, I do drive. I am going to drive a lot. I don’tbelieve the taxpayers should be funding that large fleet. I thinkit’s self-indulgent and unnecessary. … But I’ve said it since Day1: We’ve got to be responsive to the taxpayers, and having thelargest fleet in America does not make sense.”

It costs $21 for a state employee to take the train betweenChicago and Springfield or about $65 for them to drive, basedon the mileage reimbursement rate for state lawmakers. Earli-er this year, I calculated out that it costs taxpayers $4,060 whenlawmakers or others choose to fly a six-seat executive airplanebetween the two cities.

Gov. Pat Quinn used the plane the most, booking 21,134 milesin 2013. In 2013, Supreme Court justices booked 14,846 miles onthe state plane. In 2013, Illinois lawmakers booked 108,000 milesin the state planes – enoughmiles to circle the globe four times.

For several years, State Rep. Bill Mitchell, R-Forsyth, hashad a bill pending before the legislature to pare down the stateexecutive air fleet to one plane, which only the governor woulduse. But Madigan and his allies have kept the measure bottledup in committee, never to be voted on by lawmakers.

“Sometimes, I’ve been ridiculed about this because last yearit cost $7 million and we face such a big hole,” Mitchell said. “Ithink it is an example of state government having a tin ear.”

Church officials are still seeking information about vandals who egged this manger scene at St. OdiloParish in Berwyn and decapitated the heads of Joseph and Mary in the nun’s garden, according to BillDonegan, principal of St. Odilo Parish School.

Here’s hoping you had a great 2014 and that 2015 is even better. A

lot happened in Berwyn and Cicero in the past year, and it’s been

our honor and privilege to bring you the details of those stories

and the fascinating people who make the news. If you missed our

annual roundup last week of the top stories of the year, you can

find it online at http://shawurl.com/1n5g.

Youngsters engaging in hijinks may seem like a rite of passage

in our society, and that’s probably OK as long as certain lines

aren’t crossed. But the damage recently done to the Nativity

statues at the St. Odilo Church convent was without a doubt

deeply offensive to the devout in this area. If you’ve got to make

a spectacle to amuse yourself, try to do it in a way that won’t be

so hurtful to others.

SOUND OFFKeep D-201 salaries static

A recently published “SoundOff” comment called for higherproperty taxes to fund SchoolDistrict 201, “Time to act inD-201,” but the author neglectedto mention that district taxpayershave acted in very decisive waysover the years. Homeownersknow that 80 percent of schooldistrict funds go for salaries andbenefits and that higher propertytaxes will only make adminis-trators and teachers even moreaffluent. In the 30 years I’ve livedin Berwyn, district residents haverepeatedly voted down propertytax increases. Four property taxincreases were rejected in thelast 20 years, including threetimes in 2007, with even largermargins each time. District 201taxpayers weren’t born yester-day, and they don’t appreciatethese attempts of District 201administrators and employees topad their wallets while claimingthat it’s all for the children.

Why all the hate?I’m a 62-year-old black man,

and I hate that all this race stuff, black and white, is going on. I willnever understand how all this gotstarted. Back in the day, blackpeople had to go in the back dooror sit in the back of the bus, andwhite people could make themget up so they could sit down. Why did all this happen? Whycouldn’t we have love from thebeginning and stop all this hate? Idon’t understand how the color ofyour skin [matters]. God made usall, we are all God’s children and Ican’t understand all this hate.

Thanks to good SamaritansOn Dec. 21, my wife and I were

shopping in Meijer in BerwynPlaza when she blacked out andhit her head on the floor. I yelledfor help, and in mere seconds Ihad more help than I could haveimagined. People immediatelybegan to help. The store [employ-ees] and strangers I will neverknow the names of helped meassist my wife. Someone helpedme control the bleeding andsomeone called the paramedics. Thanks to you all. Also, it seemedlike the paramedics arrived in justa couple of minutes and began to

treat my wife (also asking me if Ineeded any assistance). Thanksto everyone. I just can’t thankyou enough, but know that youhave greatly reinforced my beliefin mankind.

A letter of ‘thanks’We just wanted to send our

thanks to you, next-door neigh-bor. Thank you for not deliveringour package that was mistakenlydelivered to your home insteadof ours four days before Christ-mas. Thank you for holding onto it for a whole six days and notbringing it over. We truly had agreat time making multiple callsto the shipping company andpost office looking for our missingpackage. Most importantly,we thank you for giving up ourpackage to the postal inspectorand having him bring it over. Nexttime you happen to get our mailon accident, just wave us overwhen you see us, we’ll walk the50 feet from our front door toyours to get our mail. I’m sorryyou couldn’t enjoy the very expen-sive contents of the package afteropening it and seeing what it was,but hey there’s always next year.Your kindness this holiday seasonhas been overwhelming and wewish you a happy new year.

Second dolphin calf dies afterfirst week at Brookfield ZooBy MATTHEW [email protected]

BROOKFIELD – Staffat the Brookfield Zoo aremourning the death of a sec-ond dolphin calf born at thezoo, the Chicago ZoologicalSociety announced Dec. 22.

The 7-day-old calf wasborn Dec. 12 to 9-year-old Alli-son. The calf died Dec. 19 afterzoo staff stepped in to providesupportive treatment.

A second dolphin calf bornDec. 5 died suddenly that dayafter what was believed to bea normal birth.

The first 30 days of a dol-phin’s life are particularlycritical, said Bill Zeigler, se-nior vice president of collec-tion and animal care for theChicago Zoological Society.

One of the three dolphinsborn at the zoo in 2013 alsodied in the days after it wasborn. The other two are now1-year-old calves, Merlin andMagic, and are doing well atthe zoo’s exhibit.

Zeigler said the dolphinborn Dec. 5 died very quick-ly after it was born. The zoois still awaiting results of anecropsy – an animal autop-sy – to learn more about thecircumstances of the deaths.

In the most recent death, the 7-day-old calf appeared tobe doing well. After the birth, the calf and its mother re-ceived around-the-clock careby zoo staff. Most important,Zeigler said, was makingsure the calf was nursingand “slipstreaming” with itsmother.

Slipstreaming is a criti-cal behavior that allows thenewborn calf to conserveenergy by riding a wake cre-ated by its mother and being

pulled along in her stream. However, days later the calfand mother began to showbehavior changes in theirswimming patterns. When itappeared the calf was expe-riencing problems, zoo staffstepped in and, despite theirbest efforts, died in the eve-ning.

Both of the calves that diedrecently were born to inex-perienced mothers. Zeiglersaid the zoo prefers to avoidhand-rearing dolphins to al-low the mothers to gain expe-rience. He added the Brook-field Zoo is only zoo that hasbeen successful hand-rearinga dolphin calf.

Zeigler said inexperiencedmothers have a higher lossrate than experienced moth-ers. He said that was especial-ly true of dolphins born in thewild.

The Chicago ZoologicalSociety has participated in a44-year study of wild dolphinresearch in Sarasota, Fla.Zeigler said the study showsmortalities of young calvesduring the first 30 days of lifeaccount for the largest rate ofloss to dolphin populations inthe wild.

The dolphins at the Brook-field Zoo, Zeigler said, getsignificantly better treatmentthan those in the wild.

“It’s as much an issue outthere as anywhere else,” Zei-gler said.

Zeigler said it was appar-ent the mother of the calf thatdied Dec. 19 was making agood effort to raise the calf.

Members of the zoo’s staffare heartbroken over bothdeaths, Zeigler said.

“Obviously when this typeof thing happens it is devas-tating for the staff.”

LA GRANGE – When you’re crav-ing the taste of Italy, there’s no need toempty your savings account on planetickets and hotel stays. Just head todowntown La Grange and visit LaBuona Vita to experience delicious, homemade Italian fare.

On a stormy December evening,my brother and I decided we were inthe mood for a home-cooked, heartyItalian meal, and decided to give LaBuona Vita a try.

Eager to satisfy our appetites, weperused the long-sheet menu temptingus with everything from steak andlamb chops to seafood. To open themeal, we ordered fried calamari, fullyaware of the amount of calories wewere about to consume.

Once we’d savored the well-pre-pared appetizer, our server broughtour dinner salads and two generouslyportioned pasta dishes.

My fellow diner chose the LinguineViareggio, featuring linguine withmussels, baby clams and scallopsdressed in a lively pomodoro sauce. The meal, according to my brother, had the perfect amount of spicy kick.

While my taste buds usually cravea heap of spices, I decided to order theRigatoni Emilio – pairing the pastawith fresh mozzarella, homemademarinara and garlic. The sauce waslight and tasty, a great complement tothe creamy mozzarella.

After we consumed every last, delectable bite of our food, both mybrother and I leaned back and sighed, knowing full well not one more ouncecould make its way to our stomachs –we were stuffed.

The restaurant also featuresgluten-free recipes including pastadishes, so no one has to miss out onthe pleasures of Italian dining. Andthe elegant bar offers craft beer on tap, along with select wines from aroundthe globe. The bar is a focal pointalong the sleek dining room, wherelarge windows look onto the cityscape.

During our next visit, the dinnermenu won’t be the only one on myradar, because I’m leaving room forone of the tempting dessert selections:La Buona Vita’s Molten ChocolateCake. It promises a warm chocolatecake with a gooey center served withvanilla ice cream and raspberry sauce.

On our visit, we found the foodalone was enough to warrant a returntrip, but the service added to theexperience. Not only was our serverattentive and extremely helpful when

it came to ordering our meals, but ourwater glasses never dipped below halffull. The staff made it a pamperingdinner.

So the next time you’re yearning

for pasta or tiramisu, a taste of Italy isas close as La Buona Vita in the heartof La Grange.

Maiettas team up forMorton girlsBy DAN SANTAROMITA

[email protected]

RIVERSIDE – Being thecoach’s daughter can be toughon both the player and thecoach, but Morton coach JoeMaietta and his daughter,Chloe Maietta, a junior pointguard, seem to be enjoying theextra time together.

Chloe is in her third seasonon varsity after joining theMustangs’ varsity team mid-way through her freshmanyear, even earning a spot inthe starting lineup before theend of the season. Joe is in hissecond year as head coach, al-though he was an assistant inthe program previously.

The two are playing theirparts to engineer Morton’simproved girls basketball pro-gram.

“I actually really like it,”Chloe said. “He pushes me.He’s a lot harder on me. I hear ithere and then I hear it at home,so I like the feedback and I likehaving him as my coach.”

Chloe runs the show forMorton. She is a strong ball-handler with plenty of varsityexperience and has some tal-ented players to set up in herrole as point guard.

“Her scoring is down, butshe is getting the ball to ourscorers,” Joe said of his daugh-ter. “[Jasmine] Davis is a big-time scorer and Mar [MaryamWilcher] is a prolific scorer, soI’m happy with that.”

Even though the Mustangsdropped the first two gamesof pool play at the RiversideBrookfield Holiday Tour-nament, losing a 56-51 gameagainst Niles North and a 66-49loss against St. Ignatius, Joeis seeing the improvement inhis team. He complimentedthe play of Chloe in distribut-ing the ball, saying the teammoved the ball as well as theyhad all year in the loss to NilesNorth.

He didn’t always coach hisdaughter when she was grow-ing up. Chloe wanted to play a

sport when sixth grade rolledaround and wasn’t sure whatshe wanted to play. Dad sug-gested basketball and Chloetook to it quickly.

“I got into it and just fellin love with the game,” Chloesaid.

She’s moved around be-tween point guard and shoot-ing guard, but has settled intoplaying the point for Morton. It’s a crucial position becauseof the impact it has on theteam’s offense, but that’s whatChloe likes about it.

“I like it and then I don’t be-cause if I mess up I’m lettingthe team down, but I have con-trol of the tempo so I like thatas well,” she said.

The Mustangs’ rough patchat R-B, which was precededby an overtime loss againstWillowbrook, is the first timethe team has lost consecutivegames this season.

“Overall, I think we’vebeen playing well,” Chloe said.“We’ve had a few rough patch-es that we’ve got to clean up inpractice, but overall comparedto previous years I feel likewe’re a solid team and hope-fully we can keep improvingon that.”

Mustangs muster solideffort at tough tourney

By DAN [email protected]

HILLSIDE – Playingwithouta star player is always a toughadjustment for a team, but do-ing so against elite competitionis especially difficult.

Morton headed into the Pro-viso West Holiday Tournamentwithout senior forward Weis-ner Perez, who leads the teamin scoring and rebounding, andleft Hillside with an 0-3 record.

That’s not to say the Mus-tangs didn’t show well withouttheir leader. Morton playedthree good teams and lost threeclose games.

Kenwood edged the Mus-tangs, 74-72, in double overtimein the first round on Dec. 22. Aday later, Morton tried to slowthe tempo against a much tallerHinsdale Central team and lost43-38. In the Mustangs’ tourna-ment finale, they fell to Uplift57-54.

“Considering you don’t haveobviously the 20-somethingpoints he’s averaging and the11 or 12 rebounds a game, theyplayed their hearts out,” Mor-ton coachTonyMartinucci saidof his team’s performance inPe-rez’s absence.

TheKenwood game especial-ly hurt. The Broncos, who were

also without their top big manin 6-foot-8 sophomore MannyPatterson, are in Morton’s sec-tionalmeaning the game is like-ly to have an impact on postsea-son seeding.

Morton led by as many as 12points after opening the secondquarter on a 16-1 run, but sawthat lead shrink late. The Mus-tangs led by two points with theball with 6.9 seconds left, butturned it over on the inboundplay and Kenwood was ableto tie the game with two freethrows.

In the first overtime,Mortonagain led late, butKenwood tiedit with eight seconds left. In thesecond overtime, the Mustangsheld for a last shot in a tiedgame. Tony Haley drove pasthis defender and went up for alayup, but was stripped as hewent up for the shot and Ken-wood scored the game-winningbasket on a fast break.

“Seven or eight times Ithought we had the game,”Martinucci said. “Make a freethrow here, make one there, don’t turn the ball over, butwhat are you going to do?”

Kenwood went on to beatMorton’s West Suburban Goldrival ProvisoEast by 19 thenextnight.

In the consolation brack-et, Hinsdale Central provid-ed a stiff challenge with twopost players going to DivisionI schools in Matt Rafferty, awell-regarded uncommitted se-nior, and Navy recruit GeorgeKiernan. Rafferty and Kiernanboth scored in double figuresagainst the undersized Mus-tangs.

Against Uplift, Morton led48-40 in the fourth quarter, butsuccumbed to Uplift’s full-courtpressure before losing.

Dexter Dale scored in doublefigures in all three games. TonyHaley ledMortonwith 25 pointsagainst Uplift. Luke Belcasteraveraged 11 points a game.

“You can’t ask anythingmore of them obviously with-out Weisner,” Martinucci said.“[Without him] we don’t have aguy bigger than 6-foot. I thoughtthey played their hearts out. Aplay here, a play there [makesthe difference].”
