If you have been thinking about a carriage purchase it doesn’t hurt to do your homework so when

you finally make the decision to buy you choose the correct one. Do it right the first time!

Newt & Gini Brosius, owners of New Heritage Farm, LLC, importer of Poj-Kon Michalowski

carriages and long-time BVDC members, will host an open house at their farm in Avondale, PA.

Newt will show us their carriages while presenting an informative talk on features & options. Some

the of topics to be covered include:

Hard rubber vs. pneumatic tires & quick change hubs

Shafts: Standard adjustable & telescopic

Size the carriage to the horse & driver

5th wheel brake options: navigator wheel, pedal for driver,

manual under the floor

Stainless steel: polished vs. painted

Delayed steering: pair vs. single

Vulcanized rubber vs. rubber in channel

New Spider performance enhancements

Suspension options: Elliptic, Elmex and Trailing arm air suspension

Track width

About New Heritage Farm Carriages: In 1987 my first driving lesson was a surprise birthday present from my wife Gini and occurred under the tutelage of Lisa Singer. Gini likes to say she created a monster of a driving enthusiast and it’s probably true. Years of pleasure driving led to even more years of combined driving. In 2008 when the financial crisis put a dent in my retirement funds I decided I better earn some dollars to sport my driving habit. Having driven and liked my New England Carriage Imports Spider and deciding I needed a pair marathon and having spent my entire working life in the sales and service I asked Peter if he wanted a dealer in PA. After 4 years as a dealer in 2013 I made my trip to Poland and became a direct importer.

It has been great to continue to offer the same quality Poj-Kon products in my new capacity as New Heritage Farm Carriages. The Poj-Kon (meaning "horse drawn carriage") story began as Stanislaw Michalowski, at the age of eleven, first worked on carriages in his father's carriage shop when Poland was under communist control. With the breakup of the Soviet Union, Poj-Kon was established by the Michalowski family in 1990 as a family business. In the 24 years since, Poj-Kon has produced and sold over 21,000 carriages used for competition, pleasure & training. The most rewarding aspect of the business is the willingness of Poj-Kon to listen to our suggestions and make changes to suit the North American drivers. A high level of customer service is our first priority. Working with customers and their advisors to determine the correct carriage to match the driver, the expertise level, the sport, and the equine is our goal.

Estell Manor Park is located 3.5 miles south of Mays Landing on Route 50. It is bordered by the Great Egg Harbor River / South River to the east and by Route 50 to the west. In all, it is about 1700 acres large. This is Atlantic

County Park System's most popular park and the Division of Parks and Recreation headquarters.

After the Native Americans, this was land owned by the Estell family and was the site of a glassworks in the 1800's, then became the site of a munitions plant during World War I. After 70 years, the forest has reclaimed this

area, and is now home to an incredible diversity of plants and animals.

BVDC Driving Derby Clinic &

Chapter One Farms Driving Derby - July 11th If you’ve been hearing about this new type of driving event but don’t really

know what it’s all about, now is your chance!

Chapter One Farms is holding a Driving Derby on Saturday, July 11th.

That morning, prior to the Derby, BVDC will host an “on foot” Driving Derby

Clinic which anyone may attend (you don’t need to be competing in the Derby

event that day).

Driving Derby rules are in the ADS 2015 Rule Book in the Combined Driving

section on pages 101-104 but here is how a typical Derby would look:

The course would be made of up cones and 2 hazards each with 5 gates (gates

are a minimum of 3 meters wide). It would flow like this: START - do 3

cones, do hazard #1; do 4 cones; do Hazard #2; and do 4 cones - FINISH.

More details will be coming in the next newsletter so stay tuned and put this

date on your calendar! To download the Driving Derby rules and see a video of

a driving derby go to Chapter One Farms website (“Events” page):

BVDC Long-lining Clinic with Anne Rawle

BVDC clinics for 2015 got off to a strong start with

a "re-run" of one of our old favorites....Long-Lining

with Anne Rawle. We had a large turnout with 6

horse entries and 14 auditors! Anne's primary

discipline is advanced level dressage, but she proved

again that she has a wonderful rapport with the

equine mind. She demonstrated long-lining with six

different horses (each at a different level) which

was illuminating for the auditors. Everyone

took away at least a fundamental understanding of

how much can be accomplished through the long-

lining experience. Anne's ability to "zero in" on the individual equine character is legendary, and each of

the owners was nodding in agreement with Anne's assessments. It was a very satisfying clinic and a great

pleasure to watch a very gifted trainer move each of the horses to a new place. Evidence of the value of

this clinic can be heard from the participants themselves, two of whom had this to say:

Bill Venditta (auditor): “The BVDC Long-lining Clinic with Anne Rawle is an example of why I find

membership in the BVDC so valuable. I am always looking for ways to improve the performance level of my

team of Gelderlanders in the show ring, and Anne Rawle's

expert instruction provided me with additional tools to aid

in fine tuning their performance.”

Zana White (horse entry): “Loved today's clinic! I

learned sooooo much! Anne Rawle is amazing! I am going to

bring my Arabian, "Amir", back there for some private

lessons! She got him figured out in about 10 seconds!!!! I

know I can learn a lot from her! Thank you so much for

making this clinic happen! If I can get Amir to drive I will

feel like I have finally accomplished something really

worthwhile in my lifetime! I really think Anne Rawle can

help me accomplish that!

MANY THANKS to Anne Hearn for organizing this clinic for the club!

Glen Willow Summer Clinic July 24-26

Janelle Marshall will be at Glen Willow July 24-26 for a weekend of learning fun. The clinic

will offer participants the option to school the hazards under Janelle’s educated eye. There

will also be cones and dressage clinic options if there is enough interest. Similar to last years

very successful clinic, participants will be paired with other drivers and equines of similar

skill level.

Clinician: Janelle Marshall

Janelle Marshall is originally from Southern Australia and came to the United States in 2003,

where she now resides in Aiken South Carolina. She started competing in driving at age 12

and has several Australian championship titles. She has represented Australia in two Pony

World Championships, most recently in 2013 and in 2014 she was a member of the Australian

World Singles Horse Championship Team.

Janelle has experience with a variety of horse and pony breeds and combinations, including

singles, pairs and tandems. In the past she has most notably been seen with her Connemara

Pony ‘Johnny’ competing at shows along the east coast, and was the 2010 USEF Reserve

National Single Pony Champion with him.

Janelle is an enthusiastic and friendly teacher who enjoys sharing her knowledge with her

students. She understands the importance of furthering ones education and trains with other

top drivers, like Koos de Ronde and Thorsten Zarembowicz.

Coming later this year!

“Turnout Talk” with Lore Homer

This will be an opportunity to see a slide show of turnout examples and to contribute your own photos (of yourself or others) to be included. Lore Homer will provide commentary of the photos on what works and what doesn’t work in putting together a winning turnout. Lore has been an accomplished whip in the show ring for many years, including many ribbons from Devon. More details will be provided in a future newsletter but you may start sending your photos in now to Debby Donovan ([email protected] or mail to her at: 47 Quaker Neck Rd, Salem, NJ 08079) (Note: printed photos will be returned to you after they are scanned for the slide show)

Glen Willow Educational Summer Schooling Series - Avondale, PA.

Last years inaugural summer series at Glen Willow was a great success. There were many happy drivers and equines that participated in the combined tests and the hazard clinic. The summer series was so successful that we are doing it again!

FORMAT: As similar to last year these are schooling shows, so while not ADS sanctioned we will be following their rules for safety. The CT’s consist of dressage and cones, with the option to drive an extra dressage test and a second cones course. The first round of each will count toward CT placing, but use the second trip to improve your score or fix mistakes. Drivers who drove two dressage tests wanted immediate feedback from the judge, so they could drive their test over and make improvements. There was time built into schedule to allow for this and most of the shows did not start before 9:45 and were done by 3:00 pm. Start time for shows is dependent on number of entries, but shows will not start before 9:00 am. The shows have Training Level through Intermediate Level divisions, with single and pair classes for VSE, ponies and horses. All dressage tests to be driven in a 40 X 80 meter ring.

NEW THIS YEAR: This year we will have a series championship; the best two scores from the four shows

will be averaged together to determine the championship for each class.

Another addition to this year’s agenda is the possibility of a very modified marathon course to run in conjunction with one or more of the CT’s. It would be a short course with two obstacles maybe driven twice. Still working on details of this and finding the right support crew for volunteers.

Also in the works is another hazard/obstacle clinic on July 24-26, this one is with Janelle Marshall. As an advanced level international competitor Janelle has experience with singles and pairs. Her youthful energy and enthusiasm come across in her teaching.

There are limited off site stabling options available, the furthest is a 10 minute truck and trailer ride away. Contact me about any stabling needs you might have.

There were some questions regarding the dress code last year, so let me clarify. Out of respect to the judges I think it is nice to present yourself in a clean and tidy manner. Aprons and gloves should be worn and helmets are acceptable and required for those under age 18. Please dress appropriate to the weather conditions, ie: rain, extreme heat.

All proceeds will benefit the Glen Willow CDE in

September.

Buxmont Riding Club

Pleasure Driving Shows in 2015

The Buxmont Riding Club is offering a new lineup of classes for their Pleasure Driving Shows in 2015. Each full division will include Turnout, Working, Super Reinsmanship, Timed Obstacles and a Derby class. Divisions include horses, ponies and VSEs driving in singles, and Juniors, ages 11 to 18.

New this year the Timed Obstacles (cones) class will be held in the upper ring during the morning. Competitors will be able to walk the course between rounds, then come as it is convenient to drive it.

In the main ring Turnout, Working and Super Reinsmanship will run by division with the Open Very Small Equines starting the day. There will be an opportunity to walk the Super Reinsmanship test before the show starts. This year ADS Super Reinsmanship Test #1 will be used and is available on the Buxmont website.

The Derby class will be set up during lunch break and be open for walking at that time. This class will include some elements of Combined Driving competitions. Drivers and anyone else on a vehicle will be required to wear helmets. While gloves and a whip are still required, drivers will be able to dress more casually and leave their driving aprons at their trailers.
