6 December 2012

Mary Lane Wark had an idea in 1983 and, with the help of some fearless and dedicated driving folks, organized

the Brandywine Valley Driving Club. Mickie Bowen was Vice President, Jean Braceland was Secretary, Mary

Warner Brown, William and Marjorie Miller, John and Gabrielle Taylor, Martha and Steve Barbone and Hope

Hand all rolled up their sleeves to form a group for carriage drivers in our area. They met at Mary’s Woodcock

Farm in Marshallton with the mission of starting a driving club to organize schooling shows, ADS shows and

clinics for carriage drivers in our area. We thank our founding members and all who followed for having that vision and starting the club that we enjoy today.

The Brandywine Valley Driving Club celebrates its 30th Birthday in 2013! The club has thrived over the years because of the leadership and dedication of many who share the love of

carriage driving. The 30th Anniversary Committee was formed to celebrate this landmark anniversary and has

much in store for all of you during the year. We invite you to share our enthusiasm throughout the year as we

celebrate the history of BVDC and those who did so much to build the club over the past 30 years. We are

reaching out to past, current and future members to all join us as we offer fresh new programs and activities in

2013. We will celebrate the achievements of BVDC and come together as a driving community to learn, share

and to have fun driving our horses (safely!).

We hope to see you at some of the special events planned for the anniversary year:

Dinner at The Whip Tavern with former, current and future BVDC members, on Tuesday January 29th;

Program on equine law, presented for us by Cheryl Allerton, Esq. at her offices in Wyomissing, PA on

Saturday, February 23rd from 3-5 pm;

Reception and open house and Anniversary print signings at the Carriage House in Unionville, PA on

Sunday afternoon, March 10th from 1-5 pm;

Program by Paul Martin on how the carriage auction works and more on Thursday evening, April 25th ! Then

join us at the Martin’s spring carriage auction and be sure to visit the BVDC Anniversary Booth on Friday

and Saturday (April 26th and 27th);

BVDC driving weekend at Fair Hill, MD, September 27-29th. Enjoy the driving opportunities of Fair Hill

with BVDC members and friends; and

Trip to visit Stony Brook Carriage museums and Long Island Stables with special opportunities for “behind

the scenes” tours October 11th-13th.

The theme of the anniversary, the “Celebration of Thirty Years of Driving Excellence” is portrayed in an original

watercolor composition painted by Sandra Philpott

to commemorate this special year. The pleasure

drivers, the combined driving competitors, the

very small equines and the multiples drivers are

pictured in this wonderful image to reflect the

diversity of our membership and the richness of

the sport. Prints of this poster will be on display

and for sale at the 2012 Holiday Party and

throughout the year. This is a big image (18” x 24”)

and we are offering posters ($20) and limited

edition signed and numbered prints on archival

paper ($50). A portion of the proceeds of the sale of

the posters and prints will be donated to the group

of charities designated by Brandywine Valley

Driving Club to benefit carriage driving.

Mr. Dixon tried to get me started most of my life but work and young kids kept me too busy for a long time. Then I got the Goldstein’s -- what an adventure they were! Every day I said I cheated death again! Then Roger Roberts found me “Jack” and “Jill” -- half Belgium and half Dutch harness horses. They were fun for about two years. Then I

acquired “Carbonero”, a recently gelded Andalusian. I met Jim Fairclough about that time and he turned a hobby into a passion for CDE. I was then about 55 years old and could not get enough of it! Now I am almost 59 and still can not get enough! I’m currently competing with both a single and a pair of German Warmbloods (“Flip Flop” and “Larrado”) at Intermediate level.

Driving Instructor/Trainer Profile: Dwayne Pash

Location: Ringoes, NJ

Phone: 732-580-0454

Email: [email protected]

Dwayne started working with horses at a very young age in Nelson, New Zealand, learning many of his breaking and training skills from his father and grand-father with Standardbred race horses. He trained and drove horses to many successes in the New Zealand racing industry. In 1999 Dwayne moved to New Jersey for 6 months to explore the US Standardbred racing

environment. After visiting the New Jersey Horse Park and watching a Combined Driving Event he decided to transition his skills into the pleasure driving field including Combined Driving Events. He trained and competed in the single horse divisions quickly transitioning from the Training to the Intermediate Divisions with many successes. Within the last 4 years Dwayne has trained and competed a talented Morgan pony very successfully moving from the Single Pony Training Division through to the Advanced Division. In 2012 he won the ADS Intermediate Single Pony Championship. When he is not driving the Morgan pony, he spending much of his time breaking and training young horses and/or teaching beginner through intermediate students and their horses. He accompanies his students to shows, competitions and pleasure drives. His calm demeanor is a true asset in young horses that are new to the carriage driving discipline. He brings them along in a relaxed and nurturing environment with an emphasis on their owners’

expectations. Once horses leave his training they have a good foundation to continue to hone their driving skills under their owners’ guidance. In addition to training the horse, he offers carriage driving lessons to the horse’s owner in the driving discipline of their choice. He can provide a customized work outline for horses going home to continue their work under their owners’ supervision. He offers preparation in advance of CDEs and/or pleasure horse shows, such as spring tune ups from beginners to advanced, Pleasure Driving and CDE training, singles and pairs. Dwayne trains in Central New Jersey throughout the year and can be reached at [email protected] or at 732-580-0454.

Coach Presentation by Bill & Liz Venditta

“Uncovering the Mystery of a Brewster Coach's History”

A group of about 20 BVDC members and guests gathered on a nice Sunday afternoon to hear Bill & Liz Venditta enthusiastically share their knowledge about coaches as well as their interesting journey discovering the history of their own beautiful Park Drag which they acquired in 2008. Our program began outside where we were able to get an up-close look at their coach while Bill talked about every aspect of it’s anatomy from top to bottom as well as the appointments, answering lots of questions from the audience as he went along. Their carriage was

originally a Road Coach when it was built in 1881 by Brewster & Co. in New York but sometime during its life it was converted to a Park Drag – it was not uncommon for Road Coaches to be converted to Park Drags and vice versa; they have many similarities although there are some differences which Bill and Liz described to us – for example a Road Coach has a wood paneled interior while a Park Drag has a leather interior.

Because Brewster & Co. put serial numbers on many parts of their carriages (carved in the wood and etched on all metal parts) and kept detailed records of their sales, the Venditta’s were able to find a lot of historical information about their own coach. For example, they found a copy of the original invoice showing the $2,400 purchase price. They spent a week’s vacation in New York researching their coach at places like the NY Historical Society, the NY Public Library, and the Metropolitan Museum of Art, finding that documents were distributed across these 3 locations depending on the type of document. For example, the draft/drawing of their model – the

“Tantivy Road Coach” – was found in the Museum of Art. This coach was designed to carry up to twelve passengers on the outside. All of us were very surprised to hear that passengers did not ride inside the coach but only on the outside! The servants or spares/appointments used the inside of the coach. An advertisement for the Tantivy Road Coach – which was used for commercial conveyance – showed that tickets were $3.00 and it cost $1.00 extra to ride on the box seat; passengers were each allowed up to 50 lbs of baggage. By contrast, a Park Drag was used for private pleasure drives only. A drive of about 15 miles was ideal; if the drive was longer, sometimes as long as 60 miles, they might switch horses 3 – 4 times during the

trip. The coach alone weighs 2,800 lbs so with the additional weight of the passengers you can easily see why they needed to refresh the horses!

Bill and Liz use their coach for showing only such as at Devon and the Royal Winter Fair in Toronto. During the week or two before a show they will take this coach out for practice but otherwise it will not be used. To pull their coach, they have seven gorgeous Gelderlander Coaching horses which they imported from the UK. As you can imagine, a lot of time is spent polishing and cleaning the coach and harness! They brought along their groom and coachman John Sheridan whose eagle eyes were constantly finding little smudges that needed to be touched up with the polishing cloth that was always in his hand!

At the very end of the 2+ hours of coach tour and presentation, Bill quoted his good friend Jean Dunphy who used to ride with him often on his drives… “Bill, just remember – it’s all about the horses… it’s all about the horses”. I think we all can appreciate what she was saying and it was clear by the emotion in Bill’s voice just how much his horses mean to him too.

The driving world really needs people like Bill and Liz Venditta who are committed to preserving what is left of coaching history for all of us to enjoy. And our club is very fortunate that they are willing to share

their wealth of knowledge about coaching. We very much appreciate all the time and effort that they put into preparing and giving this presentation for us! Be sure to check out the many pictures and also a video on our website (www.bvdc.org)to get a sampling of what we saw and heard as Bill and Liz talked about their coach!

General Membership Meeting “Going the Distance”

Presentation on Competitive Trail Driving When: Sunday, March 17th @ 2-5 PM Where: New Bolton Center - Werner Amphitheater (main building) Refreshments will be served RSVP to Debby Donovan ([email protected] or 856-981-1868)

What is Competitive Trail Driving? Competitive Trail Driving (CTD) is a team

sport. You get to enjoy the countryside and learn an enormous amount about your teammate: your horse. The horses must complete the trail within a specified time range and then are judged against themselves. This is accomplished by pre-drive judging to establish the baseline and post-drive judging which allows the judges to subtract points for changes in the individual horse including those caused by fatigue, metabolic difficulties, rubs, etc. While the “team” will receive a numeric score, the motto for distance competitions is “To Finish Is To Win”. Drive distances can vary from 10, 15, 25, or 30 miles in a day to multiday drives totaling 50 to 100 miles. The sport is full of supportive people who are happy to help out newcomers. At competitions, you will often get the chance to drive in beautiful areas that you might otherwise never see. Eastern Competitive Trail Riding Association (ECTRA) is the governing body for competitive rides and drives in our region. Information and rules can be found at www.ectra.org. Here’s another article that describes CTDs: http://review.barnmice.com/horse-driving-competitive-trail-driving/ On March 17, come to New Bolton Center for a “Going the Distance” presentation on

competitive trail driving with Cate Peloquin. Maryland residents Cate and her husband

Ben have competed in Competitive Trail Riding and Endurance events for many years. In addition to riding in events, twice a year they manage multi-distance rides at Fair Hill. Cate is the current President of ECTRA and is a certified “lay judge” for competitive trail events. Her wealth of knowledge and experience in distance riding will prove valuable to anyone interested in distance driving. Bring your questions… because at Fair Hill on April 21, plan on participating in “Going the Distance” – the Drive. This will be a 7 mile competitive trail driving event in which you can experience all the in’s and out’s of distance driving in a modified format.

Incoming Board members: Jane Oehler, Hannah Polson, Zana White, Kathy Kozak

General Member present: Lisa Grater

Meeting was called to order at 7:06 P.M.

Review / Approval of Minutes: Debbie Donovan made a motion to approve the minutes, seconded by Debbie

Camplone. The motion carried. Merrill Walters asked that the minutes be amended by adding his handing over of the

liability forms from Fun Day to Tim C. and they are on file.

Treasurer’s Report: Reporting period: 9/12/2012 – 11/13/2012 Beginning Balance: $13,601.73 Income: 559.00 Expenses: -1,825.00 Ending Balance: $12,355.00

A detailed itemized report is on file from the Treasurer and can be obtained from any board member upon request.

Merrill W. moved to accept the report. Seconded by Debbie Camplone. Unanimous approval.

Committee Reports:

Nominating Committee: New board members will be voted on at the holiday party. Outgoing board members include:

Suzy Stafford, Debbie Camplone, Toots Mahre , Debbie Wolf, and Anna Klumpp. Incoming board members are:

Jane Oehler, Jessica Axelsson, Kathy Kozak, Hannah Polson, and Zana White.

Programs Committee:

Coaching Presentation to be given by Liz and Bill Venditta on Nov. 18th at New Bolton Center. They will have their

coach on the premises as well as present a slide show and talk about the coach itself and the research on its

provenance.

2012 Holiday party: Debbie Camplone and Toots Mahre gave an update on the volunteers for the party (all is well)

and the board discussed the purchase of the grids for displaying the photos at the party. They were purchased for

display purposes by Jaye Ventresca a couple years ago and used exclusively for the club. Merrill Walters made a

motion for the club to purchase the grids at the cost of $300.00, seconded by Teresa Palumbo and was carried

unanimously. Jane Oehler and Lisa Grater volunteered to pick up the grids from Jaye V. and bring to the holiday

party and to store afterwards. The proceeds from the silent auction will offset the cost of the party. A motion was

made by Merrill to donate $500.00 to the Field Services of New Bolton Center, seconded by Debby D and approved

unanimously. The justification for this is based on the fact that they let us use their facilities for our meetings (both

Board meetings and General Membership meetings) at no charge.

Membership Committee: As far as the board discussion of the exact dates for the membership year, the by-laws

wording will not be changed for the upcoming membership year 2013. The Board still feels that the wording is

unclear in the by-laws. This will be worked on and updated over the coming year.

There was no report from the equipment committee as well as the Clinic/ Special Events Committee.

Teddy Bear Picnic / Show Committee: the board had major discussion about the date/place options for TBP for 2013. (Continued on page 14)

Page 14: Newsletter for the BVDC, Inc. · 1 December 2012 Newsletter for the BVDC, Inc. Serving the Driving Enthusiast December 2012 Inside this Issue: BVDC Holiday Party details ...

14 December 2012

Bobbi Hagar had sent a file online to the board with the options due to schedule conflicts for 2013. This conflict

included the scheduling of Fair Hill with the ADS weekend, Fair Hill International as well as Garden State CDE.

There were pros and cons with each option. The board decided to stay in touch with Bobbi H. and weigh all the

different scenarios as more information is developed for each. A board decision on the date will be made at a future

meeting.

A proposal to have a non-ADS fun show was put forth by Lisa Grater and Jane Oehler. They will investigate and

report at the next board meeting in January.

Pleasure Drive (recreational) Committee: The Daniel Boone Pleasure Drive had to be cancelled. It will most likely be

rescheduled for April/May of 2013.

There were no reports from the Hospitality Committee as well as the ADS Representative.

Sunshine Committee: Kathy Kozak reported that Katrina Wieand had shoulder surgery and had been sent a card on

behalf of the club. It was requested that cards be sent to Doris Grassi as well as Suzanne Langenwalter.

Anniversary Committee: Margaret Grillet submitted a detailed report on the plans being proposed by this committee

for 2013 which the board reviewed and discussed. No changes to the proposed plans were requested by the Board.

Margaret also provided an article to announce the committee and upcoming planned events in the newsletter.

It was noted that the founding members of BVDC have been invited at no charge to the Holiday party.

Margaret is coordinating the orders for the posters and prints for the 30th anniversary (signed/numbered prints will be

priced at $50 and posters for $20).

Old Business:

Advertising Renewals - Debbie Camplone sent out renewal request letters to all current advertisers and was able to

obtain several ad renewals for the website and the newsletter for next year.

BVDC support for the Pa. Horse Expo in 2013 in Harrisburg-Teresa Palumbo and Pat Kozakowski offered to work at

the ADS booth on behalf of the club; they will talk to Anne Council to see what times are needed to cover there.

NEW Business:

2013 Advertising Rates - A proposal was made by Pat Kozakowski to keep the ad rates the same for this coming

year. Seconded by Tim Canavan and was passed unanimously.

New Member Packets - The club brochures and pins supply are nearly exhausted, these had been contracted by Pam

Taws so she will be contacted about having more made.

Committee Chairs - It was noted that we need committee chair(s) for Programs, Clinics and Pleasure Drives for the

coming year. Jane O. and Lisa G. have offered to plan a pleasure drive for ponies and mini’s sometime in July in

Perkeomenville (Green Lane) .

Motion to end the meeting by Debbie Donovan, seconded by Tim C. meeting adjourned @ 9:17 P.M.

Submitted by Pat Kozakowski
