Meet your BVDC Officers & Directors! Each month we will introduce one or two of the current BVDC Officers/Directors in the newsletter so that you can get to

know the people who are representing you!

Zana White - Secretary 2014—2015

As it turned out, I ended up living in Philadelphia having moved here from the West Coast about 20 years ago. Though I've always loved horses and heard their call when I was a small child, it wasn't until late in life that I actually was able to answer it. Oh, I kept a close eye on horses while growing up and where ever I could get near them via pony rides, trail rides, stopping to pet a horse in a field somewhere, anywhere I could, I would. I was driven...pardon the pun! Back in 2000 I was working as an Official Court Reporter for the Court of Common Pleas in Philadelphia. Very stressful job. I knew the one thing that would help with that stress was the touch, feel, and smell of horses. So I found my way to the carriage horses in the city. Being around them helped me stay grounded, sane,

happy and in touch with nature in the midst of concrete, buildings, too many people, cars, exhaust fumes. Etc. Well, the next thing you know, I'm a carriage driver on the weekends giving tours of Old City and Independance Hall! That's how it all started. I bought my second horse during that time, an Arabian, Amir. I went to a lot of clinics in natural horsemanship with people such as Buck Brannaman, John Lyons, Kenny Harlow, Tommy Turvey, to name a few. And did some hunter jumpers, lots of trail riding, went to some dude ranches in the west, did some dressage, and then found endurance riding! Loved that! Unfortunately, my Arabian foundered. I was heartbroken. My husband, in the meantime, had bought a Tennessee Walker, Sunrise, to ride, so when my horse got sick, I still needed to exercise the Walker. I couldn't leave Amir alone, so I ended up buying a shetland pony, Dolly back in 2006, to keep him company. She needed to be exercised too, so I figured I could drive her! That's how I found BVDC, searching for driving clubs on the internet. I really don't remember when I joined BVDC, but I think it was 2007. It took me a while to get involved with the club activities. I mostly just went and watched at different shows and went to the holiday parties and got to know some of the driving folks. Slowly inched my way into showing. I mostly drove my pony/ponies recreationally. And then two years ago I discovered the Buxmont shows, thanks to Jaye Ventresca's encouragement! I went, and boy did I get hooked! Low key, fun, and even won some ribbons! At this time I have five equines, and my Arabian lives and is doing well. I drive a large pony mustang, Redman, and also a mini, Isaiah. My favorite activities are the continuous drives, pleasure drives, ADTs, TBP, ADS weekend and I just did my first CDE last fall. Also thought I'd give the Devon marathon a shot last May and that was a real blast! Incredible show and driving in the Dixon Oval is absolutely electric!!! The timing was right when a Board member asked if I would consider being on the Board back in 2012. I said yes and became a Board member in 2013. This year I became secretary and am loving getting more involved with how the club works behind the scenes, so to speak. And I found volunteering at club activities is the best way to get to know the club members and see how everything works and to give back the joy to others that driving has given to me. I never knew just how much I would love driving and the people in the driving community. I'm delighted to be part of such a special communtiy of folks who are very dedicated and who work incredibly hard to keep the lines of driving open for future generations to

come. Zana ([email protected])

Camilla Hansen - Director 2014—2015

I first got involved in driving when my mom and dad purchased my first pony, Tower Hill’s Maggie, a dearly loved grey Connemara mare. The previous owner indicated she was broke to drive and before we knew it, we had bought two sets of harness, a Meadowbrook cart, and a marathon carriage. When I was not driving Maggie I was riding her and together we competed in dressage, event, and jumping shows in addition to numerous CDE’s. I first joined BVDC in my freshmen year of high school and continued to be a member till I left for nursing school at Misericordia University in 2007. During my high school years I enjoyed attending clinics and shows either hosted or announced through the BVDC newsletter. During my college years my driving and riding time was limited to summer vacation and I missed it dearly. Finally, in 2011 I earned my Bachelor’s degree in nursing and was excited to begin

driving and riding consistently again. Upon graduation Maggie was already 25 years old and although I still competed her at a limited degree, it was very carefully done and only after making sure she was as physically fit and naturally sound as was possible. Sadly Maggie passed away in 2013 and I miss her enormously. In 2013 I entered a Master’s program to become a Nurse Practioner and am pursuing this degree while working as a full-time Nurse at the Veterans Administration. Currently, my mom and I are driving an 8 year old Hanoverian warmblood mare and we

hope to be competing her soon. Camilla ([email protected])

BVDC Novice Driver Clinic with Lore Homer At Chapter One Farms, Pedricktown, NJ

Saturday, March 22nd

This popular clinic is offered by long-time club member Lore Homer who is an expert whip, recognized judge and very effective instructor. Many current whips have had an excellent start with Lore in past clinics, learning the basics and acquiring the techniques and confidence to safely work with a horse. This clinic is open to new drivers, but some experience is necessary. Auditors are welcome also. You may bring your horse or pony for harness fitting and carriage fitting. You may also bring your horse in hand (halter) or in long lines, if this is where you are with your training. The group will be divided according to horse size to make the environment safer for all. Lore will spend time with each driver and answer any questions the participants may have.

Horses and ponies: Must be able to work in a group situation and stand quietly

with others Must be broke to the cart or carriage Harness and carriage must be in good working condition

The Driver: Must have and use a whip and gloves Must had at least 4 hours of qualified driving training Have knowledge of harness, Hitching and safety factors

Helmet is required for driver and all passengers/grooms.

This clinic is for the inexperienced driver who wants to build some confidence and experience in being with a group of other drivers and being evaluated for appropriate turn-out, correct harnessing, and “way of going” in a low stress environment.

The clinic will be held inside at Chapter One Farms’ indoor arena. For directions go to: wwwc.chapteronefarms.com/directions. Drivers need to bring and use muck buckets. Water is available. Bring a chair! Release form is available

at http://www.bvdc.org/BVDCRelease.pdf. Lesson times will be determined and communicated after the deadline

when we know how many people will be attending.

See next page for registration form - deadline to register is Saturday 3/15. Questions? Debby Donovan (856-981-1868 or [email protected])

BVDC Novice Hazard Driver & Navigator Clinic At Chapter One Farms, Pedricktown, NJ

Sunday, April 6th

The club is going to offer a hazard driving and navigator clinic that will be open to both BVDC members and non-members. If you have never driven hazards before or are still fairly new to the marathon phase of Combined Driving, then this is your opportunity for a great introduction to the sport! And since the navigator is a critical member of the team when driving hazards, be sure to bring your navigator with you to this clinic!

The format of the clinic will accommodate both those who want to bring their horse & carriage as well as those who would rather just listen & watch. It will be held in the indoor arena so we won’t have to depend on good weather!

Topics to be covered during the clinic include:

Determining if you are ready to drive hazards and compete in a CDE

How to find & learn the rules

When to arrive at an event

Walking the hazards – the role of the driver and the navigator

Visualizing the course

Preparation (time cards, clocks, gear)

Driving the hazard – tips and tricks for the driver and navigator

Fast vs. reckless – how to be safe

Husband/Wife teams – is this for you? Stories from the field

Their next horse was Montana Light (“Monty”) a 15 yr old Thoroughbred stallion. They got Monty at the end of 2006 from Marcie Quist. They competed him through Intermediate level and won 1st place in most of their marathons until Monty’s retirement in 2013. Competitions included: Garden State,

Gladstone, The Laurels (now Glen Willow), Elk Creek, Southern Pines and Katydid.

Thank you 2013 BVDC Volunteers!

Your gift of time and talent is more

precious than gold!

Without volunteers we have no sport! We can hold an event without sponsors or spectators if we keep to the basics. We can hold an event for just a handful of competitors. But without volunteers there is no event!

All of us who drove at an event in 2013 can’t thank you enough for your gift more precious than money. We drivers spend a lot of time and money on equipment, transportation and entry fees. But we also have all the fun of competing! For our volunteers, it’s a pure labor of love.

All of us who drove in an event in 2013 are so grateful that you gave up your own chance to drive (or golf, picnic, fly, sail, skydive) that day so that we could drive. Giving money is great and essential to support the cost of events with international judges and expensive venues. But in this hectic era, money is actually an easier gift than time. So we thank you all for the precious gift of time and talent you gave us!

Here is the list of BVDC Members who volunteered in 2013. It’s an incredible team of dedicated, competent and friendly folks. If your name is not here, please volunteer in 2014. There are jobs for every age, experience level and physical condition. Be a volunteer!

We hope we’ve identified

all of our volunteers, but

please accept our apologies

if we have inadvertently

omitted your name!

Volunteer Incentive Program Earn “BVDC Bucks”!!!

The success of any organization is dependant upon its volunteers. BVDC would like to recognize the hard work and dedication of our members by saying ”Thank You!” Members can earn “BVDC Bucks” by accruing hours they have spent volunteering for BVDC activities and use their accumulated “bucks” to buy club merchandise.

Each volunteer hour is equal to $1.00 of “BVDC Bucks”.

The various item(s) available for purchase are shown on the BVDC website. Examples include logo items such as lunch bags and clothing. In addition, silent auction items at the annual Holiday Party can be purchased with your “BVDC Bucks”. If the cost of an item exceeds the amount of “BVDC Bucks” you currently have, you can make up the difference with cash.

Note: “BVDC bucks” may not be used towards clinic or membership fees due to the fact that these fees are held down to minimal cost. “BVDC Bucks” have no cash value and cannot be redeemed for cash.

There is no limit to the amount of “BVDC Bucks” a member can earn. They can be redeemed at any time and do not expire.

Here’s how it works:

1. You volunteer for BVDC activities - this includes shows, clinics, member programs, committees and any other BVDC sanctioned activities. Volunteer opportunities will be advertised in the

newsletter and web-site.

2. You fill out the Volunteer Hours Report Form (see next page) and have the activity organizer

sign it.

3. You submit the completed Volunteer Report Form to the program secretary: Becky Pendlebury,

BVDC Volunteer Recognition, 15 Styer Road, Glenmoore, PA 19343

4. Upon receipt of your volunteer hour report(s), the hours will be recorded and “BVDC Bucks” will

be sent to you.

For more information, contact: Becky Pendlebury email: [email protected] Phone: 610-942-3913 It takes an army of volunteers to run activities, so we’re hoping that many of you will take advantage of this program to earn rewards for your volunteer efforts!

The History Fair Planning Committee is working to organize this year’s event which will be commemorating New Jersey’s 350th Anniversary along with the 10th Anniversary of The State History Fair. The committee is specifically interested in having a display of horse-drawn carriages to highlight this form of transportation in its history as a colony and a state. My name is Leo Blake and I work for the NJ State Park Service. I have been assigned to assist our planning committee with locating folks who may be interested in participating with a horse-drawn carriage display at this year’s NJ State History Fair. If you are interested, please contact me: (856) 964-5383 or [email protected] For more information about this event or to register to participate, please see the event website: http://www.njhistoryfair.org/

Deadline to register to participate is April 4th!
