Questions for the Principal: [email protected]

Officially listed as an ‘Outstanding School’ by Ofsted, Budmouth recognises that a good education is not just about examination results, but a thorough preparation for life; it is about developing character and confidence through outstanding teaching and abundant opportunities.

Based on academic rigour, excellent pastoral care and an enviable activity programme we insist on hard work, exemplary behaviour and courtesy, at all times. As a very successful College we have a proud record of commitment to the highest standards and put great store in the widest possible recognition and celebration of achievement to nurture individual talents.

However, the real measure of Budmouth is our students. All who visit are struck by the friendly, purposeful calm that pervades the College. This is no accident and is borne from self-disciplined, focused and appreciative young people.

Young people who are ambitious to be the best they can be, able to think for themselves, with a firmly-held moral code based on personal responsibility, respect for others and the desire to serve the wider community.

I want Budmouth to become one of the most successful state schools in Britain, not just for academic achievement but for the young people we develop and the difference they make to the lives of others.

Choosing the school that best suits your child and which offers them the best opportunities for development and achievement is a vital decision and we believe that here, at Budmouth College, we offer those opportunities. We look forward to the pleasure of welcoming you to the College so that you can see us in action and appreciate the difference a Budmouth education makes.

David Akers, B.Ed MAPrincipal

As parents we wish our children to grow up and live full lives as happy and successful people. At Budmouth we want nothing less. More than a place of learning but a way of living, Budmouth seeks to equip young people morally, physically and academically, to make their contribution to the wider world. http://bit.ly/xspM1D

Choosing the right school for your child is one of the most crucial decisions you will ever have to make. The right decision will be profoundly rewarding for your child’s future.

Children join us from all over the South Dorset area and annually we accept young people from up to twenty primary schools.

Budmouth seeks to provide parents with as much information as possible. All receive a brochure and are encouraged to visit us and view our website.

There are two Open Evenings in October when parents and children are welcome to meet staff and students.

Parents recognise that Budmouth provides a secure and happy learning environment.

Ofsted Inspectors highlight that our College has successfully created a supportive and caring atmosphere in which students grow and flourish. We are firmly committed to traditional values and high standards.

“ The students are very proud of their College and spoke eloquently and with great respect and affection for their teachers, who they believe work very hard on their behalf. As a result, the quality of relationships is superb, behaviour is excellent.”

How a child settles into school, feels happy and secure and is encouraged will determine their success. With this in mind, the College has established a holistic approach to pastoral care which supports every student right through their secondary career. We seek to empower students to make a life for themselves that is fulfilling, enjoyable and responsible.

Every youngster will meet with their Tutor before they join the College, and that Tutor will stay with them right through their secondary career. This relationship is vital as it allows the Tutor to get to know the student and establishes continuity of care.

As well as their personal Tutor, every student has an Academic Tutor with whom they meet on a regular basis throughout the year to

discuss progress and review achievements. Any problem can be discussed and targets set and these are then highlighted to the relevant teaching staff. This process aims to enable the student to reflect and develop strong independent learning skills.

The College also has teams of trained Student Mentors and Student Mediators who work with students to make them feel secure and to resolve any issues they may have.

We aim to develop confident individuals and successful learners who are able to lead fulfilling lives and make a positive contribution to society. We look to extend horizons and raise aspirations by helping our students to discover their talents and interests.

“ The importance of pupils’ personal development is central to the work of the school, which has successfully created a supportive and caring atmosphere in which pupils grow and flourish. Pupils are valued for their contribution to school life and there is a feeling of harmony throughout... Students receive exceptional levels of pastoral care and support for their personal development, which is outstanding. Their behaviour is excellent.”

Academic results at Budmouth have maintained sustained improvement for over a decade. This trend continues, as staff and students work to achieve their very best.

We consistently achieve results well above the county and national averages and we are very proud of our ‘value added scores’ which so clearly demonstrate our commitment to every student.

Academic excellence is one of our major priorities as we want every child to achieve the best possible results; children who join

us do tend to share in the success of the college. Our results at GCSE and A level speak for themselves and the increasing number of students going on to Oxbridge or to study Medicine is a reflection of this success.

Students are placed in the academic set which best suits their ability in different subjects. All students have academic targets which their subject teachers and progress leader review constantly. Parents, students and staff are able to monitor academic progress against individual targets. At the end of each year, the College celebrates the work of its students with Achievement Assemblies and a Prize Giving Ceremony.

Budmouth selects some of its students on ability and all children are tested on arrival to identify those with special gifts or talents. These students are taught from the beginning of Year 7 in several high ability groups. They are set ambitious targets and receive a faster pace and depth of teaching. They also have access to three sciences, three modern languages and a Gifted and Talented programme which runs across the College.

“ Standards are well above average and students make very good progress. This reflects very effective teaching and learning and excellent leadership and management.”

ReSultS: GCSE five A*-C are currently 80% plus and

consistently above the national average.

‘A’ level success rate is currently running at 99%.

Post 16 Vocational course success rates are currently running at 100%.

Annually over 130 students go on to university with many gaining places at Russell group universities including oxford and Cambridge.

Teaching and learning are at the very heart of all that we do and so Budmouth takes great care in appointing the most outstanding candidates to every post. With its reputation, facilities and results the College always attracts some outstanding candidates. To add to our expertise, we enjoy productive partnerships with several university teaching departments including those of Exeter, Bath, Southampton and Plymouth.

Across the College there is a culture of professional development and rigorous improvement which is incorporated into the regular monitoring of lessons. Faculties are annually assessed by the senior leadership team and consistently monitored by effective middle managers. As part of this process, students are regularly consulted on ways to improve classroom practice.

Faculties are set challenging targets to raise the achievement level of all students. The College runs its own coaching programme which has been highly praised by Ofsted. Budmouth has recently been chosen as the Leadership and Innovation Hub for the South West of England.

Our motivated teachers are highly experienced and committed to working together to achieve the very best for all. They give up an immense amount of their own time to ensure students get the very best from their educational opportunities.

Students at Budmouth progress exceptionally well, acquiring knowledge quickly and in depth because our teachers have the highest expectations and a commitment to learning.

At Budmouth we strive to ensure that every student fulfils their potential and we believe that all children are entitled to an education that will enable them to develop themselves intellectually, socially, creatively and emotionally. We also believe that children should be able to live and develop as happy individuals.

Our innovative 11-19 curriculum includes a two year Key Stage 3 and three year Key Stage 4 and offers our students seamless progression into post 16 studies at Key Stage 5. The earlier move to option choices helps focus and motivate students as they get to choose study areas of particular interest to them and then have a longer period for in-depth learning and examination success. With abundant guidance and support available for students, transition between key stages is practically seamless.

There is a fantastic range of subjects on offer and all individuals have an opportunity to follow a curriculum related to their individual ability and needs. Students have access to: the English Baccalaureate; a wide range of academic courses such as GCSEs, AS and A levels; and vocational courses such as BTECs. Student-centred learning is at the heart of our curriculum, preparing Budmouth students for their future transition to university, training and employment.

The curriculum we offer includes three separate sciences and three modern languages which will effectively support any university application and allow access to Oxbridge and medical school. The results of our innovative curriculum are annually reflected in a host of successful university placements.

“ The curriculum is outstanding because it gives students the opportunity to excel in ways appropriate to their individual strengths and interests. The range of academic and vocational qualifications, complemented by excellent extra-curricular and enrichment opportunities, is central to the outstanding outcomes for students.”

To get the best from students it is essential that they are provided with a facility that is well equipped, functional and fit for a 21st Century education. At Budmouth we have achieved this by designing and building a campus around the needs of our students.

Our college overlooks the Fleet on the Jurassic Coast, a World Heritage Site and is undoubtedly one of the most attractive locations for a school in the country. Our campus comprises six specialist buildings set around a landscaped courtyard adjoining eleven acres of playing fields with ample hard standing play areas.

In June 2012 an £18m state of the art teaching facility ‘The Hub’ was opened by HRH Prince Edward The Earl of Wessex. The futuristic building, based around a central high atrium, has already been nominated for several design awards and provides a fantastic learning environment for all our students. To complement The Hub, there are specialist buildings for Performing and Visual Arts, Design and Technology, Sport, Student Support and our Sixth Form. Across the campus there are abundant informal work areas, all offering WiFi access to students.

“ There is excellent vision, drive, and energy and an infectious commitment to serving pupils’ needs by constant improvement. Standards are rising at a much faster rate than nationally. Pupils thoroughly enjoy being at school.”

On a weekly basis over seventy clubs and teams deliver unrivalled opportunities to our students. From sport to music and from performing arts to railway engineering there is something on offer for every child. Not surprisingly our students and teams have an outstanding record of success at local, county and national levels in cross-country, swimming, football, basketball, tennis, athletics, volleyball, netball and golf.

Budmouth has one of the most advanced outdoor education programmes of any school in the United Kingdom. We are committed to the full development of all our students and

we know that Budmouth is a model of excellence in this field. Annually the college fields over forty residential adventurous trips within the United Kingdom involving some one thousand students.

Budmouth is one of only fifty state schools in the UK with a Combined Cadet Force. Cadets participate in annual summer camps and have the opportunity to attend over fifty courses annually, which cover everything from power boating to parachuting.

Every year our students join major expeditions to the developing world. Over a period of a month they will mountaineer, trek, white water raft, mountain bike and jungle train as well as undertaking a community project. Past venues have included India, Ecuador, China and Kenya, where our students have built and now support a health centre.

The benefits of these opportunities to young people include developing self-confidence and independence; gaining a sense of achievement and responsibility; discovering new skills and developing powers of leadership.

“ Regular involvement by all pupils in outdoor adventure lessons and a vast number of residential trips greatly enhances leadership qualities, teamwork and self-esteem.”

Budmouth is the only school in Weymouth and Portland that has a Sixth Form, providing students with essential continuity in their education. We attract students from right across South Dorset as well as a number from Europe; our retention rates and results are excellent.

Students joining can choose from over forty five courses, knowing that they will gain the qualifications and key transferable skills needed for both higher education and the world of work in the Twenty First Century.

Our Business and Enterprise team offers a range of activities designed to foster the development of professional skills and attitudes in students. The team is responsible for leading the Centre of Excellence for Industrial Liaison, which acts as the platform offering industry related activity. Examples include the Internship programme, the Sir Samuel Mico Scholarship Scheme, our campus magazine and the College shop.

The CEIL is a nationally recognised centre that aims to bridge the gap between the classroom and professionalism, in partnership with academic, business and industry partners such as Battens Solicitors, Bournemouth University and Lloyds Bank. The CEIL provides a professional atmosphere, harnessing opportunities for students by bringing together established professionals and aspiring young people.

Alongside these courses runs an enrichment programme that offers numerous opportunities for students to sample new activities and follow new interests.

The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award, Combined Cadet Force and overseas opportunities complement the campus based programme.

Our post-16 provision is based on excellent relationships between students and staff to ensure that teaching and learning supports achievement.
