Homestay accommodationExperience British culture in a home-from-home environment

Living in homestay accommodation is a wonderful opportunity to experience British culture, and to live in a friendly and safe home environment while still enjoying your independence.

A friendly welcomeWe have many diff erent kinds of homestay, each off ering diff erent experiences of culture, religion and lifestyle. They can be a home with children, a single person, or even a home hosting other students like yourself. All homestay options have one thing in common however - they all provide a warm and friendly welcome to international students.

Why should I choose a homestay? There are some great benefi ts to homestay accommodation, including:

⋅ spending time with a family, practising your English and getting to know the British culture

⋅ independence within a caring home environment ⋅ a comfortable study bedroom with a desk

and wardrobe ⋅ breakfast and evening meals ⋅ weekly laundry (bedding and towels are provided

by your homestay)⋅ internet and telephone access⋅ choice of a single or shared room⋅ the opportunity to live as part of a British family

or household within the area local to the college.

Getting to know your homestayEvery homestay is diff erent, but every host is experienced in looking after international students. If you have any questions or if there’s anything you don’t understand about your homestay, we always advise students to speak directly to their homestay host. This includes questions about what happens in the holidays, having friends to stay and meals. Most families are fl exible and approachable, so don’t be afraid to ask.

LocationMany of our homestays are within a 20-minute walk of the college or on a suitable bus or train route.

Our guaranteeWe visit all of our homestay hosts to make sure that they are able to provide a safe and welcoming home environment for our students, and to ensure that they off er comfortable accommodation that meets our students’ needs. We encourage students to take the opportunities off ered by homestay hosts to engage with life in the household, as this will enhance your experience of living and studying in Britain.

Despite our detailed matching process, sometimes students do not settle well in their homestay and wish to move to another homestay, or change to another form of accommodation. We always work with students and homestay providers to resolve any issues that arise and we will move students who have not settled well as soon as possible if issues cannot be resolved to everyone’s satisfaction.

Support for homestay studentsThe college Welfare and Safeguarding Team is always on hand to help students to settle in and to answer any questions they may have. In addition, we conduct regular student surveys to check that students are happy with their accommodation.

Younger studentsExtra measures are put in place to safeguard students in homestay who are under the age of 16. Local Social Services teams will visit students under 16 in their homestay accommodation to ensure that their needs are being met and that their environment is as safe, secure and nurturing as it should be.

* Please note homestay is not available in London for students under 16. All international GCSE Pathway students at Brighton must reside on campus.

British law does not allow discrimination between ethnicity, origin, religion, sexuality or disability.
