Vangelis Tsiligiris, PhDc, MA, PGDip, BA(Econ)College PrincipalMBS College

Welcome from the College PrincipalBack in 1998 MBS College was created as franchise of Nottingham Business School, Nottingham Trent University. Since then, we have come very long way to transform MBS College to what it is today. During all these years we have attempted to strengthen the College’s profile by establishing strategic alliances with UK Universities and receive accreditation by International Accreditation external bodies. Today the College is fully licensed by the Greek Ministry of Education, holding both licenses for estab-lishment and operation, which are necessary for the legal operation of private College in Greece who wish to establish collaborations with foreign Universities.

MBS is also accredited by the British Accreditation Council for Independent Further and Higher Education (BAC) as an institution suitable to offer and support higher education provision. In 2011 MBS College was the first institution worldwide to receive accreditation by EDU, the Intergovernmental Organisation formed by an International Treaty to promote Quality Education and Accreditation. Additionally, the degrees obtained after studying at MBS College, are recognised by the UK National Academic Recognition Information Centre (NARIC).

Our vision continues to be, to transform MBS College into leading private provider of higher education within the Mediterranean region. Our mission is to pursue our vision through the expansion of MBS’ portfolio of programmes by adding new undergraduate and postgraduate courses, while enhancing the College’s teaching and learning approaches aiming for the highest quality and standards. The source of our competitive advantage is our selective differentiation strategy which aims to put MBS College at the top of private colleges in the wider southern Mediterranean region.

Emanating from our carefully planned and implemented differentiation strategy, we have managed to attain the following distinctive characteristics:

·We are the only accredited private Higher Education provider in the area of Southern Greece.·We are the only provider of higher education programmes in Southern Greece who provides its students with access to degrees from top-ranked universities, and enables them to acquire unique competitive advantage in the globalised employment market.·Our Teaching and Learning (T&L) strategy and methods reflect the guidelines of Nottingham Trent University, however these are carefully contextualised to the needs and the special characteristics of the local or the individual student cultures.·We prepare our graduates to enter the employment market or continue for postgraduate courses in top universities.

On August 2nd 2011 MBS College was accredited by EDU – the intergovernmental organisations (IGO) formed in June 2011 under the guidelines and protocols of UN.

EDU was created aiming to provide international accreditation for higher learning institutions. Its aim is within the next 5 years to create a publicly accessible database of tertiary education/academic institutions.

The problem of illegal, fraud, and degree-mill institutions which often appear as “universities” is becoming more intense following the continuous increase in the demand for higher education qualifications. This problem is twofold:

1) Increasingly students worldwide are misled by these institutions. This has financial implications for them but most importantly it creates emotional distress and holds back their plans for career progression.

2) The higher education sector in general is negatively affected by the operation of these organizations. The entire sector is influenced by negative criticism and word-of-mouth which is generated by deluded students and their families.

EDU is planning to create a database of the legal institutions in tertiary education at international level. According to EDU Secretary-General, His Excellency G.Irving Levance, “Our ultimate goal is to curb the questionable activities of fake schools and bogus accredi-tation agencies currently plaguing the global educational market, particularly online”.

MBS College was one of the first education organisations to receive accreditation by EDU. Mr Vangelis Tsiligiris, the College’s Principal, mentioned “we are honoured by the accreditation of EDU. We strongly believe that this initiative will be a great success and it’s going to be embraced by Higher Education Institutions worldwide. It is definitely something which was needed to reassure students and their families are not mislead, while legal Higher Education Institutions safeguard their reputation”.

You can find more about the accreditation of MBS by EDU in www.edu.int/MBS

International recognition from NARICAccreditation by the British Accreditation Council

MBS College was inspected and successfully certified by the British Accreditation Council as a suitable institution for offering higher education services.

It received excellent reviews (report of inspectors BAC, 22/01/2005 & 18/02/2010) on the quality of the studies, the facilities, the administration and the functionality of the College as a whole.

More specifically, the report concluded “…MBS College remains an im-pressive educational institution which achieves high levels of quality in all its functional areas…’’

In order for an institution to receive the accreditation from BAC, it has to fulfill specific requirements concerning its facilities, academic and administrative staff, the quality of its programmes and the organisa-tional aspects as a whole.

Once the accreditation is given, intermediate checks occur in order to ensure the maintenance of a high level of quality.

The accreditation from BAC, is considered proof of quality and efficiency in the Educational Sector and is recognised globally as such.

MBS College is a Member of the Hellenic Colleges Association (HCA), and has also an association with the official source of the recognition body UK NARIC. The National Recognition Information Centre for UK (NARIC) is responsible for providing the necessary information and advice concerning both professional and academic qualifications, not only in Britain but also in other countries.

After the degree qualifications have been certified by NARIC, a certificate is awarded to each graduate respectively. This official document confirms that the degree conferred by MBS College, is equivalent, to that awarded to the graduates of Nottingham Trent University in the UK in every respect.

Library

In MBS, an important part of the annual investment budget is allocated to the renewal and the enrichment of the library content.

One of the collaboration conditions with Nottingham Trent University was the existence of a library, based on the University’s standards.

By providing a wealth of information in a variety of forms, the students are aided in their studying, and in the research process. 2,000 quality books have been amassed, all respected works of particular interest and importance.

In addition, by using the “ATHENS” system, students may access more than 8,000 academic magazines and journals, a valuable facility in the advancement of their learning.

ComputerFacilitiesandElectronicInfrastructures

Technological advances greatly influence the way any organisation operates. MBS systematically updates its electronic infrastructure regularly, responding to new developments and initiatives.

The electronic infrastructure at MBS is extremely important as a tool/aid within the teaching process; and MBS embraces the new information systems and com-puter aided teaching and learning methods.

In 2008, an e-study system was initiated, whereby students could download and use information for com-pleting their course assignments, and also communi-cate with the academic staff on a daily basis.

TURNITIN is also in use as a mechanism to trace pla-giarism, which reinforces the importance of original thought and accountability.

PCs and IT workstations with access to Nottingham Trent University’s electronic library and journal sources are constantly available and open wireless internet access, enables both discovery and enquiry.

Now

Students are also allowed access to Nottingham Trent University Online Workspace (NOW), a database, where they have the opportunity to obtain updated informa-tion on the curriculum modules and to access resources and journals from a wide variety of sources from around the world, related to their coursework.

Academic Partnerships

MBS College’s strategic decision to collaborate with Nottingham Trent University, was based on the superior quality of the latter’s academicprogrammesanditsgraduates’wideacceptancebythemarketplace.TheUniversityofLondonnowprovidesthestudentsinCretewithahighlystimulatingacademicexperienceandoffersuniquenetworkingandprofessionalopportunitiesataninternationallevel.

COURSE STRUCTURE – CONTENT All undergraduate programmes are of three (3) years duration and carry 360 credit points; the Master degrees have duration of eighteen (18) months and carry 120 credit points.

The undergraduate programmes of Nottingham Trent University consist of annual modules, as is the case with every British University. There is a continuous assessment procedure in place and therefore no formal examinations are required. The programmes modules, allow the students to understand in depth, the different thematic aspects of their subject. This is always achieved in conjunction with the use of new technology, together with more traditional teach-ing and learning methods. ASSESSMENTThe evaluation of the students’ progress incorporates various methods of assessment, such as: assignments, presentations, team projects, written work etc. In this way, students gain a more accurate and objective evaluation of their work, progress, strengths, and weaknesses. The only difference between the students studying at MBS College and those who study at the University’s UK base is the language in which the courses are sometimes delivered. The as-sessments students experience at MBS College, have the same content, structure and time frames as those at Nottingham Trent University.

QUALITY ASSURANCEIn order to ensure the quality of the students’ assessment, each assignment project is marked by three different examiners- two from MBS College and one from another British University. All sections of the programmes, particularly those of the third year assignments, are monitored by an External Examiner provided by Nottingham Trent University for four-year period.

The structure and the content of the programmes provided, are monitored on a regular basis by the Programme Director of MBS, who informs Nottingham Trent University of the progress made. MBS writes a detailed annual quality report, to include all the elements that constitute its academic progress (academic team, students etc). The report is discussed in depth at the annual conference, which takes place at Nottingham Trent University campus.

MBS College also has in place, internal monitoring procedures, which occur on a regular basis, in order to maintain the high quality of all aspects of its services.

EnglishLanguage&ComputerLiteracy

Recognising the importance of English as a spoken language in all parts of our lives, domestically or internationally, MBS College has added English as a compulsory class to all students. Business students particularly, are taught Business English, as part of their overall academic programme and in this way, can more easily access international bibliography and recourses.

MBS College, also offers to all students computer workshops, where they are introduced to the basic programmes and software which are widely used both academically and professionally.

Both English lessons and Computer workshops are free of charge.

CareerDays

Every year, MBS organises a Career Day for recently graduated students, in order to introduce them to professionals working within their field. This is an opportunity for MBS graduates to interact and network with senior executives who are employed by some of the most prestigious companies in Crete. The effectiveness of this event is demonstrated by the fact that 98% of MBS graduates find work in their subject-area within the first 3 months after graduation.

Alumni

During the period of MBS College’s partnership with Nottingham Trent University, many students have graduated. All students after graduation, automatically become members of MBS College and Nottingham Trent University Alumni Association, which operates according to UK’s Universities standards.

All the members of the Association are frequently updated on the activities that occur at MBS College and Nottingham Trent University and Alumni are invited to talk to students about their career progress. Graduates in this way, are considered an inseparable part of the MBS College community, and maintain strong ties with the academic community. All members benefit from their participation in the Alumni Association, extending their social and professional network.

InductionWeek

MBS College operates in accordance with the British Higher Education System. In this way, the courses are run, assessed, taught, managed and organised in such a way as to make it totally different from similar courses within the Greek Higher Education System. In order to introduce students to this system, MBS College has designed an introduction process. The programme runs for one week, at the beginning of each academic year and includes a series of activities: Lectures, Seminars, Essays etc, all aiming to introduce newcomers to the course regulations and the way in which the system works. Consequently, students are introduced to the methods of how to do course work, research, prepare and present projects following the Harvard Reference System. Also, during the induction week, tutors present the course content to students.

The module material is analysed, the assessment methods described, bibliography suggested, and at the same time the students have the opportunity to become acquainted and meet their tutors. Finally, the new students are given a tour of the campus facilities; laboratories, library, study and computer rooms and they are taught how to use the electronic platforms and the electronic library provided by Nottingham Trent University.

TutorialsandSupportingTeaching

Upon enrolling at MBS College, each student is allocated a personal tutor. The role of the personal tutor is a pastoral one aimed at ensuring the well-being of the student in aspects of his/her life which may impact on their academic progress. The purpose of these regular one-to-one meetings is to encourage, inspire, and praise the strengths of the students. It is also an opportunity to address any problems that the student is encountering and help the student to overcome difficulties they may be having in either their personal life or with regard to academic issues. A short report of the meeting is recorded, which the staff and the student in question have access to.

Formal small group tutorials offer the students a platform to debate and verbalise their ideas concerning their course work and wider issues and provide an opportunity to become familiar with the work and opinions of others.

Both these tutorial methods enhance, enrich, and improve the educational experience. MBS College tracks and records its students’ progress. MBS identifies the students’ strengths and weaknesses and nurtures them through supportive teaching and learning strategies. The students’ progress tracking system, consists of reports completed by tutors referring to each module, and students’ feedback from questionnaires, discussions and seminars.

Focused on enhancing deep understanding and learning, MBS College provides extra teaching hours, free of charge, responding to where the progress tracking system has traced weaknesses. This involves, extra classes with the class coordinator, consisting of a limited number of students or extra one-to-one tutorials. During these classes, students’ weaknesses are evaluated and students and tutors work together in order to achieve a desirable academic per-formance. It has been proved that through this additional support system, students overcome the difficulties they once faced and manage to successfully complete their studies. The enhanced teaching/learning opportunities and the student progress tracking system that MBS College utilises, have received a positive response from the students and the External Review Board of Nottingham Trent University.

MBS College, currently is in the process of becoming a recognised centre for the University of London International Programmes, and has already made the arrangements for offering tuition and support for the programmes of BSc Economics, BSc Accounting and Finance, MSc International Busi-ness and Master of Laws, at MBS College campus, to those who have chosen and been accepted to attend the specific programmes.

The University of London is the third oldest University in England and one of the leading universities in Europe. Its world-class federation of 19 Col-leges and a number of smaller specialist Institutes provides an unrivalled range of education opportunities of outstanding breadth and quality.

The University is unique in its size and federal structure. Today, the federation includes specialised Colleges such as LSE (London School of Economics), while others such as UCL and Queen Mary are multi-faculty. In 1858, with the establishment of its International Programmes, the University broke new ground by opening up its awards to those who either could not or did not wish to come to London to study, so that physical lo-cation would no longer be a barrier to Higher Education. The University of London International Programmes is the world’s oldest provider of degrees through distance and flexible learning. Today there are more than 45,000 students worldwide studying on 100+ degrees, diplomas and certificates.

EquivalencyAcademics who teach and assess campus-based students, de-velop and write the study materials for all International Programmes. They also set the exam papers and mark the scripts. In-ternational students are examined to the same standard as that required of students enrolled at the University’s constituent Colleges.

This principle of equivalency is enshrined in the University’s regulations: “Candidates granted degrees and other awards shall have attained the same academic standard irrespective of mode or place of study or examination”.

As an International student you register with the University of London for a University of London award. The academic direction of your programme - in-cluding the syllabus, assessment, learning resources and, where given, aca-demic support- is the responsibility of a particular College, or consortium of Colleges, of the University of London, known as the “Lead College”.

When you graduate with a degree from the University of London, you will be sent two documents – a final diploma (i.e. the parchment you receive on graduation) and a Diploma Supplement.

The final diploma will indicate that you were registered with the University of London and awarded a University of London degree, and give names of the Lead Colleges which provided academic direction for the pro-gramme. The University of London logo and signature of the Vice-Chancel-lor of the University of London are incorporated.

The Diploma Supplement will describe the nature, level and content of the programme you successfully completed and include a transcript of courses taken and marks achieved, as well as overall classification. It also provides further information about the role of the Lead Colleges and method of study. It explains there is no difference between the standards of awards whether they are obtained by International study or face-to-face at a College of the University of London.

QualityRobust quality assurance mechanisms have been endorsed by the Quality Assurance Agency – the UK’s independent body for safeguarding the quality and standards of Higher Education.

AlumniFormer students and alumni include seven Nobel Prize winners, leaders of Commonwealth countries, government ministers, renowned authors, academics, judges and business leaders.

The International Programmes reputation internationally continues to ensure the graduates are to be found in leading positions around the world. The active Alumni association the graduates will find after finishing their studies, will offer them unique networking opportunities.
