Since the first Pac-12 Conference Championships were held in 1978, Stanford has won 19 individual conference titles. Heavyweight Flint Pulskamp became the first Cardinal wrestler to win a conference title in 1983, and three years later, Stanford had its first two-time conference champions in Jeff Bradley and Dave Lee. Lee and Jimmy Aguirre are the only two Cardinal wrestlers to have taken home the title as freshmen. In 2008, Tanner Gardner became the third Cardinal wrestler to successfully defend a conference crown, taking home the 125-pound title for the second straight year.

Stanford has had two conference Wrestlers of the Year - Matt Gentry in 2004 and Nick Amuchastegui in 2012. The Cardinal has also had two Newcomers of the Year - Gentry in 2002 and Zack Giesen in 2007. Steve Buddie became Stanford’s first Coach of the Year in 2004.

Prior to the organization of the Pac-12, Stanford had seven Pacific Coast Conference Champions – Jake Butts (1933), Woodward Bohosky (1935), Reese Milner (1935), Vern Jones (1946, 1948,1949), Dan Winston (1946), Oscar Thompson (1946) and George Russell (1952). The Cardinal also produced three champions in the Athletic Association of Western Universities - Tom Allen (1964), Don Beuhler (1964) and Bruce Wilhelm (1965) - along with two in the Pac-8 Conference, Len Borchers (1968, 1969) and Chris Horpel (1975).

Doug Perkins Jeff WilsonStanford has a history of producing All-American wrestlers that dates back more than five decades. In 1967, sophomore teammates Len Borchers ’69 and Terry Crenshaw ‘69 finished fourth nationally in their respective weight classes and became the school’s first All-Americans. Since then, 14 more Cardinal wrestlers have accomplished that feat, and the program now boasts 16 All-Americans with 23 combined awards.

Much of Stanford’s success has come in recent years, as the program has racked up 13 All-America finishes since 1999. In 2004, junior Matt Gentry completed a perfect 42-0 season and became the school’s first NCAA Champion, claiming the 157-pound title in St. Louis, Mo. In 2007, juniors Tanner Gardner and Josh Zupancic became the first Stanford duo to earn All-America honors in the same season since Borchers and Crenshaw, and Gardner joined Chris Horpel ’75 as the school’s only two-time All-Americans at the time.

In 2008, Gardner continued his run, becoming the first three-time All-American in school history with a fifth-place finish at 125 pounds. Zupancic finished sixth at 157 pounds, joining Gardner and Horpel as the only Stanford wrestlers to earn multiple All-America honors. Sophomore Nick Amuchastegui became the program’s 14th All-American in 2010 after placing fourth at 165 pounds at the 2010 NCAA Championships in Omaha, Neb.

In 2011, three Cardinal wrestlers earned All-America honors for the first time in school history, also marking the fourth time in program history and the third time in three years that Stanford produced multiple All-Americans in the same season. Amuchastegui added a second-place finish at 174 pounds to become Stanford’s fourth repeat All-American and just the second Cardinal to advance to the NCAA finals. Sophomore Ryan Mango and senior Zack Giesen finished sixth in their respective weight classes to become Stanford’s 15th and 16th All-Americans.

In 2012, Amuchastegui capped off his storied career with his second consecutive runner-up finish at the NCAA Championships in St. Louis, Mo. He became the only Cardinal wrestler to reach the NCAA finals on multiple occasions and joined Gardner as the only three-time All-Americans in school history. Mango secured a fifth-place finish at the championships to become just the fifth Cardinal wrestler to earn multiple All-America honors.

1916 Stanford Wrestling. L to R – Gonzalez (115), Gagos (135), Campbell (145), Wise (Coach), Eiskamp (158), Daniels (HWT). On April 8, Stanford’s first wrestling team traveled to Cal’s Harmon Gym and won two of the five matches. Matches were six minutes long, consisting of two three-minute periods with a two-minute break. If no fall occurred, a three-minute overtime was wrestled after another two-minute break. If there were still no fall, the match was decided by a “referee’s decision.” Wrestling did not develop our current point system until 1945.

1948 Stanford Wrestling. Co-captain Vern Jones, head coach Chuck Taylor and co-captain Winston Mumby. Coach Taylor served as the wrestling coach until he became Stanford’s head football coach and later the director of athletics. Jones remained undefeated for four years and became Stanford’s first three-time conference champion (1946, 1948 & 1949). He was the first wrestler ever inducted into the Stanford Athletic Hall of Fame. Mumby was the conference runner-up and followed in his father’s footsteps by becoming Stanford’s head wrestling coach in 1949.

1957 Stanford Wrestling. Kneeling: Alan Laubscher, Karl Hufbauer, Roger Edelson, Ed Howell. Standing: Head coach Wes Ruff, Steve Handley, Peter Likins, Jerry Wright, assistant coach Don Damuth. The team was led by captain Peter Likins. Likins remained undefeated in duals for four years at 137 and 147 pounds and was runner-up in the Far Western freestyle as well as the conference championship. Likins was the first Stanford wrestler ever to be inducted into the National Wrestling Hall of Fame as an Outstanding American.

Stanford Wrestling at the Conference Championships

1946 Stanford Wrestling. Sitting: Head coach Ted Mumby, Winston Mumby, Dan Winston, George Bevier, Vern Jones, Alan Walker, Dave Heninger, Jim Kurfess. Standing: Bob Wallace, John Mosher, Ed Buringhausen, Oscar Thompson, Lowell Napper, Lou Cullison, George Wing. After a four-year hiatus during World War II, Stanford resumed competition and beat Cal for the first time in nearly 20 years. Cal had dominated West Coast wrestling for decades. Stanford was coached by Ted Mumby, who had been India’s National and Olympic team coach. Mumby produced three conference champions in 1946: Dan Winston (14), Oscar Thompson (17) and Vern Jones (20).

Vern Jones was the first wrestler to be inducted into Stanford’s Hall of Fame in 1998. He remained undefeated all four years (1946-49).
