BRAINSTORM OF GENRE AND MUSIC MAGAZINES

Page 2: Brainstorm of genre and music magazines

PopThe audience of a pop magazine would expect to see bright,

neon colours as soon as they open the content page. Magazines like, Top of the Pops and We heart Pop, both accentuate the feminine atmosphere by including these

features on the front page.

From the pop music video I have seen, I can confirm that each convention links to this genre through the use of common

dress, speech and colour. Each member is dressed differently from one another but all have an item that links the group

together, for example JLS are a trendy and inspire others to dress similar to them.

Pop

They would be photographed in stances that make them appear on-trend and incorporate dance moves that appeal to young

girls. Often enough the girls wear revealing clothing, get objectified and draw themselves around many males for

attention, the strobe lights enhance the ‘club’ like atmosphere they are trying to portray and by using high pitch voices makes

them appear sensitive.

Rap

Similarly to pop, rap uses young women as a status symbol within the industry, they use females to dance inappropriately on screen to gain views. Although within this genre, they use

girls in multiples and like to have a ‘pimp’ title.

The use of colour that is linked to rap in particular are grey tones, this is a visual for what you expect to see their location,

dress and persona links. The harsh reality of ‘life on the streets’ makes them use profanities, explicit language and un-

educated terminology.

They can be mislead at a young age that has left them to feel vulnerable, in order to not appear or feel like a ‘victim’ to others

within society, they mask their emotions and use it creativity through the use of lyrics. Although some people don’t agree

with what they say, they gain a large fan base with predominantly young boys.

Dance

The audience of a dance magazine would expect to see neutral colours, e.g. white/black, this suggests that it set for a mature

person from the age of 40+.

The common dress for someone within a dance category would include items such a glasses, hats and polo neck jumpers, this could be linked to the maturity of those. Reading shows intelligence and

with the assistance of glasses, shows the progression of age.

Most of the headings don’t stand out and appear dull on the page, the little use of colour they do include could be for both male and

female audience.

Hip-HopFrom the Hip-Hop music videos I have viewed, they have similar stereotypes and conventions of

the ‘Rap’ genre.The establishing difference

would be that, in Hip-Hop they appear to be more educated with what they are speaking

about and only show material wealth - hidden emotions.

In Hip-Hop the audience would expect to see a diverse range of

cultures and genders.

ClassicalThe audience of a Classical

magazine would expect to see a publication with more textual information about the feature,

than to be surrounded by imagery.

This may do with the fact they are at a matured age of their life

and have a serious interest in harmonious music.

They are suggested to be well spoken and of a high reading

level.

ROCK

Usually ‘Rock’ is the genre that people feel most on edge about, it suggests primarily that it is middle-age men who, like to rebel

or endorse in loud activity, that would only be of interest.

They commonly dress in dark, contrasting colours, e.g. black with some white, to give a hard hitting edge to their image and can

often appear threatening or scary.

These are shown to be the most passionate about their work and their audience use them as a God-like figure.
