Brain Care Centre offers programs and services to adults (18+) who have sustained an acquired brain injury and their families.
Our region includes Edmonton and area as well as the communities along Highway 16 from
Stony Plain to Jasper with offices in Edmonton and Edson.
Brain Care Centre is a non-profit organization stemming from the merger of
NABIS (Northern Alberta Brain Injury Society) and EBIRS (Edmonton
Brain Injury Relearning Society).
As we all try to navigate this “new normal”, I am extremely appreciative for everyone’s patience and understanding while we have transitioned many of our programs and services into a virtual format.
All the staff at BCC have been working very hard to ensure we continue to meet the needs of those we serve and have shown great commitment throughout the whole process. We are all looking forward to seeing our clients again soon and hope you are able to stay healthy and well in the meantime!

Provincial Support for Those Affected by COVID-19
6
CERB
AISH and Income Support recipients who have lost employment income because of COVID-19
may be eligible for the Federal Government’s Canada Emergency Response Benefit (CERB). A
portion of the CERB payment is exempt and will not affect your provincial benefits. For more
information and to determine your eligibility, call your AISH or Income Support caseworker, or the
Alberta Supports Contact Centre at 1-877-644-9992.
Evictions
While you are still expected to pay rent, new protections have been put in place by the Alberta
Government for renters. Any evictions put in place for non-payment of rent and/or utilities
before May 1, 2020 have been suspended. No late fees on late rental payments can be applied
until after June 30, 2020. Landlords and renters must work together to establish a manageable
payment plan. If you are having trouble paying your rent, speak with your landlord and be honest
about your situation.
Electricity & Natural Gas Bills
Any Alberta resident experiencing financial hardship related to COVID-19 is eligible for a deferral
of their electricity and natural gas bills. Alberta residents cannot be cut off from these services for
late or non-payment during this time until June 18, 2020. To arrange for a deferral and repayment
plan, contact your utilities provider directly. You can sign up for the deferral at any time until
June 18, 2020. Because this is a deferral, the deferred amount is expected to be paid; your
utilities provider will work with you to create a manageable repayment plan.
Student Loans
All Federal and Provincial Student Loan payments have been paused for 6 months, interest-
free, beginning March 30, 2020. You do not need to apply for this program; payments have been
postponed automatically until September 2020.
For more information on these programs, please contact the Alberta Supports Contact Centre at
1-877-644-9992.

There’s an App for That
It can be hard to find a new routine during isolation. It can also be hard
to stay motivated to maintain routines. The Momentum Habit Tracker
app can help. This app helps you create healthy routines by setting
weekly targets and taking notes.

THE TRINITY OF OUR BEING
Thank You Edmonton Recycling Association (ERA)!
John has a passion for collecting art and instruments and often brings beautiful pieces into Brain Care Centre office to share with our staff. In 2020, John had a goal to sell some of his collected pieces online. To do this, he needed a reliable device that he could set up an email and a Kjiji account on.
John received his laptop from Edmonton Recycling Association and immediately accessed our Assistive Device Training program to get started on the selling process. He has recently been working on taking pictures of all of his items, which he hopes to get on Kijiji soon!
John is very grateful to the ERA for the laptop they provided which is allowing him to turn passion into a profit.
The body gives hope for time to heal. The body has the will to endure. The body has the courage of strength. The mind can truly provide hope. The mind creates a will to push you forward. The mind is courage to face fear.
The spirit of the soul has deep hope. The spirit of the soul shall seek the will. The spirit of the soul is real courage.Body, mind, and soul the trinity of our being.

Sylvie’s Journey After Brain Injury
In 2016, Sylvie was travelling for work when her car was hit head-on by a distracted driver veering out of the opposite lane. Sylvie was rushed to the ER with injuries to her head and neck. The hospital staff remarked it was a miracle she survived and did not suffer further injuries. She was sent home the same day.
Sylvie tried to return to her regular activities, but realized everything was much harder than before her accident. It wasn’t until she met with her family doctor that she realized she was suffering symptoms of a severe concussion.
Before her injury, Sylvie led an active life with her family and worked full-time. But afterwards, Sylvie experienced ongoing blurry vision, dizziness, nausea, memory loss, headache, anxiety, and had difficulty following discussions in social settings. It often took Sylvie hours or days to recover from simple tasks. Sylvie was struggling.
Fortunately, her family doctor told her about Brain Care Centre’s Concussion Program. She no longer had to suffer with her injury alone and she started attending the Concussion Support Group. “It was such a revelation – hearing the struggles of others” Sylvie shared.
Through the program, she came to understand her injury better which “relieved the guilt” that came along with her symptoms.
Through sessions with the Occupational Therapist, Sylvie now recognizes her symptoms and knows when to rest and has made great improvements at work. “Staff at Brain Care Centre have taught me to break down my goals into manageable challenges that you CAN win.” Further counselling through the program helped to relieve her anxiety – especially with driving. “I would continue to drive, even though I was scared. To come to Brain Care Centre at the end of the drive, to share my challenges, was such a gift”.
Four years after her accident, Sylvie’s therapies through the Brain Care Centre came to an end. Feeling healthy and strong, Sylvie is able to work, be an active mom and enjoy many of the things in life we all take for granted.

and loneliness. Many community programs and services are on hold.
Thanks to our volunteers, we have been able to continue providing
connection, socialization and a sense of community for clients through
our Leisure Companion Program.
While they are unable to meet with clients in person, volunteers have
been calling and video chatting with clients to provide support during these uncertain times.
