What a funny sight it is to see a brood of ducklings with a hen!

![Page 4: Jemina Puddle Duck, Beatrix Potter, AutoPlay](https://reader037.fdocuments.net/reader037/viewer/2022102605/544975d0b1af9f7c418b463d/html5/thumbnails/4.jpg)
Listen to the story of Jemima Puddle-Duck,
who was annoyed because the farmer's wife
would not let her hatch her own eggs.
4
![Page 5: Jemina Puddle Duck, Beatrix Potter, AutoPlay](https://reader037.fdocuments.net/reader037/viewer/2022102605/544975d0b1af9f7c418b463d/html5/thumbnails/5.jpg)
Her sister-in-law,
Mrs. Rebecca Puddle-Duck,
was perfectly willing to leave the hatching to some one else.
5
![Page 6: Jemina Puddle Duck, Beatrix Potter, AutoPlay](https://reader037.fdocuments.net/reader037/viewer/2022102605/544975d0b1af9f7c418b463d/html5/thumbnails/6.jpg)
“I have not the patience
to sit on a nest for twenty-eight days;
and no more have you,
Jemima.
6
![Page 7: Jemina Puddle Duck, Beatrix Potter, AutoPlay](https://reader037.fdocuments.net/reader037/viewer/2022102605/544975d0b1af9f7c418b463d/html5/thumbnails/7.jpg)
“You would let them go cold;
you know you would!”
7
![Page 8: Jemina Puddle Duck, Beatrix Potter, AutoPlay](https://reader037.fdocuments.net/reader037/viewer/2022102605/544975d0b1af9f7c418b463d/html5/thumbnails/8.jpg)
“I wish hatch them all by myself,”
quacked Jemima Puddle-Duck.
8
![Page 9: Jemina Puddle Duck, Beatrix Potter, AutoPlay](https://reader037.fdocuments.net/reader037/viewer/2022102605/544975d0b1af9f7c418b463d/html5/thumbnails/9.jpg)
She tried to hide her eggs;
but they were always found and carried off.
9
![Page 10: Jemina Puddle Duck, Beatrix Potter, AutoPlay](https://reader037.fdocuments.net/reader037/viewer/2022102605/544975d0b1af9f7c418b463d/html5/thumbnails/10.jpg)
Jemima Puddle-Duck became quite desperate.
She determined to make a nest right away from the farm.
10
![Page 11: Jemina Puddle Duck, Beatrix Potter, AutoPlay](https://reader037.fdocuments.net/reader037/viewer/2022102605/544975d0b1af9f7c418b463d/html5/thumbnails/11.jpg)
She set off on a fine spring afternoon along the cart-road that leads over the hill. She was wearing a shawl and a poke bonnet.
11
![Page 12: Jemina Puddle Duck, Beatrix Potter, AutoPlay](https://reader037.fdocuments.net/reader037/viewer/2022102605/544975d0b1af9f7c418b463d/html5/thumbnails/12.jpg)
When she reached the top of the hill,
she saw a wood in the distance.
She thought that it looked a safe quiet spot.
12
![Page 13: Jemina Puddle Duck, Beatrix Potter, AutoPlay](https://reader037.fdocuments.net/reader037/viewer/2022102605/544975d0b1af9f7c418b463d/html5/thumbnails/13.jpg)
Jemima Puddle-Duck was notin the habit of flying.
13
![Page 14: Jemina Puddle Duck, Beatrix Potter, AutoPlay](https://reader037.fdocuments.net/reader037/viewer/2022102605/544975d0b1af9f7c418b463d/html5/thumbnails/14.jpg)
She ran downhill a few yards flapping her shawl,
and then she jumped off into the air.
14
![Page 15: Jemina Puddle Duck, Beatrix Potter, AutoPlay](https://reader037.fdocuments.net/reader037/viewer/2022102605/544975d0b1af9f7c418b463d/html5/thumbnails/15.jpg)
She flew beautifully
when she had got a good start.
15
![Page 16: Jemina Puddle Duck, Beatrix Potter, AutoPlay](https://reader037.fdocuments.net/reader037/viewer/2022102605/544975d0b1af9f7c418b463d/html5/thumbnails/16.jpg)
She skimmed along over the tree-tops
until she saw an open place in the middle of the wood,
where the trees and brushwood had been cleared.
16
![Page 17: Jemina Puddle Duck, Beatrix Potter, AutoPlay](https://reader037.fdocuments.net/reader037/viewer/2022102605/544975d0b1af9f7c418b463d/html5/thumbnails/17.jpg)
Jemima alighted rather heavily,
and began to waddle about in search of a convenient dry nesting-place.
17
![Page 18: Jemina Puddle Duck, Beatrix Potter, AutoPlay](https://reader037.fdocuments.net/reader037/viewer/2022102605/544975d0b1af9f7c418b463d/html5/thumbnails/18.jpg)
She rather fancied a tree-stump
amongst some tall fox-gloves.
18
![Page 19: Jemina Puddle Duck, Beatrix Potter, AutoPlay](https://reader037.fdocuments.net/reader037/viewer/2022102605/544975d0b1af9f7c418b463d/html5/thumbnails/19.jpg)
But – seated upon the stump,
she was startled to find an elegantly dressed gentlemanreading a newspaper.
19
![Page 20: Jemina Puddle Duck, Beatrix Potter, AutoPlay](https://reader037.fdocuments.net/reader037/viewer/2022102605/544975d0b1af9f7c418b463d/html5/thumbnails/20.jpg)
He had black prick ears
andsandy colored whiskers.
20
![Page 21: Jemina Puddle Duck, Beatrix Potter, AutoPlay](https://reader037.fdocuments.net/reader037/viewer/2022102605/544975d0b1af9f7c418b463d/html5/thumbnails/21.jpg)
“Quack?”
said Jemima Puddle-Duck,
with her head and her bonnet on one side --
“Quack?”
21
![Page 22: Jemina Puddle Duck, Beatrix Potter, AutoPlay](https://reader037.fdocuments.net/reader037/viewer/2022102605/544975d0b1af9f7c418b463d/html5/thumbnails/22.jpg)
The gentleman raised his eyes above his newspaper
and looked curiously at Jemima --
22
![Page 23: Jemina Puddle Duck, Beatrix Potter, AutoPlay](https://reader037.fdocuments.net/reader037/viewer/2022102605/544975d0b1af9f7c418b463d/html5/thumbnails/23.jpg)
“Madam,
have you lost your way?”
said he.
23
![Page 24: Jemina Puddle Duck, Beatrix Potter, AutoPlay](https://reader037.fdocuments.net/reader037/viewer/2022102605/544975d0b1af9f7c418b463d/html5/thumbnails/24.jpg)
He had a long bushy tail
which he was sitting upon,
as the stump was somewhat damp.
24
![Page 25: Jemina Puddle Duck, Beatrix Potter, AutoPlay](https://reader037.fdocuments.net/reader037/viewer/2022102605/544975d0b1af9f7c418b463d/html5/thumbnails/25.jpg)
Jemima thought him mightily civil and handsome.
She explained that she had not lost her way,
25
![Page 26: Jemina Puddle Duck, Beatrix Potter, AutoPlay](https://reader037.fdocuments.net/reader037/viewer/2022102605/544975d0b1af9f7c418b463d/html5/thumbnails/26.jpg)
but that she was trying to find a convenientdry nesting-place.
26
![Page 27: Jemina Puddle Duck, Beatrix Potter, AutoPlay](https://reader037.fdocuments.net/reader037/viewer/2022102605/544975d0b1af9f7c418b463d/html5/thumbnails/27.jpg)
“Ah, is that so?
indeed!”
said the gentleman with sandy whiskers,
looking curiously at Jemima.
27
![Page 28: Jemina Puddle Duck, Beatrix Potter, AutoPlay](https://reader037.fdocuments.net/reader037/viewer/2022102605/544975d0b1af9f7c418b463d/html5/thumbnails/28.jpg)
He folded up the news-paper,
and put it in his coat-tail pocket.
28
![Page 29: Jemina Puddle Duck, Beatrix Potter, AutoPlay](https://reader037.fdocuments.net/reader037/viewer/2022102605/544975d0b1af9f7c418b463d/html5/thumbnails/29.jpg)
Jemima complained
of the superfluous hen.
29
![Page 30: Jemina Puddle Duck, Beatrix Potter, AutoPlay](https://reader037.fdocuments.net/reader037/viewer/2022102605/544975d0b1af9f7c418b463d/html5/thumbnails/30.jpg)
“Indeed!
how interesting!
I wish I could meet with that fowl.
I would teach it to mind its own business!”
30
![Page 31: Jemina Puddle Duck, Beatrix Potter, AutoPlay](https://reader037.fdocuments.net/reader037/viewer/2022102605/544975d0b1af9f7c418b463d/html5/thumbnails/31.jpg)
“But as to a nest
-- there is no difficulty:
I have a sack-full of feathers in my wood-shed.
31
![Page 32: Jemina Puddle Duck, Beatrix Potter, AutoPlay](https://reader037.fdocuments.net/reader037/viewer/2022102605/544975d0b1af9f7c418b463d/html5/thumbnails/32.jpg)
“No, my dear madam,
you will bein nobody's way.
32
![Page 33: Jemina Puddle Duck, Beatrix Potter, AutoPlay](https://reader037.fdocuments.net/reader037/viewer/2022102605/544975d0b1af9f7c418b463d/html5/thumbnails/33.jpg)
You may sit there as long as you like,”
said the bushy long-tailed gentleman.
33
![Page 34: Jemina Puddle Duck, Beatrix Potter, AutoPlay](https://reader037.fdocuments.net/reader037/viewer/2022102605/544975d0b1af9f7c418b463d/html5/thumbnails/34.jpg)
He led the way to a very retiring,
dismal-looking house amongst the fox-gloves.
34
![Page 35: Jemina Puddle Duck, Beatrix Potter, AutoPlay](https://reader037.fdocuments.net/reader037/viewer/2022102605/544975d0b1af9f7c418b463d/html5/thumbnails/35.jpg)
It was built of faggots and turf,
and there were two broken pails,
one on top of the other, by way of a chimney.
35
![Page 36: Jemina Puddle Duck, Beatrix Potter, AutoPlay](https://reader037.fdocuments.net/reader037/viewer/2022102605/544975d0b1af9f7c418b463d/html5/thumbnails/36.jpg)
“This is my summer residence;
you would notfind my earth
-- my winter house
-- so convenient,”
said the hospitable gentleman.
36
![Page 37: Jemina Puddle Duck, Beatrix Potter, AutoPlay](https://reader037.fdocuments.net/reader037/viewer/2022102605/544975d0b1af9f7c418b463d/html5/thumbnails/37.jpg)
There was a tumble-down shed at the back of the house,
made of old soap-boxes.
37
![Page 38: Jemina Puddle Duck, Beatrix Potter, AutoPlay](https://reader037.fdocuments.net/reader037/viewer/2022102605/544975d0b1af9f7c418b463d/html5/thumbnails/38.jpg)
The gentleman opened the door,
and showed Jemima in.
38
![Page 39: Jemina Puddle Duck, Beatrix Potter, AutoPlay](https://reader037.fdocuments.net/reader037/viewer/2022102605/544975d0b1af9f7c418b463d/html5/thumbnails/39.jpg)
The shed was almost quitefull of feathers
– it was almost suffocating;
but it was comfortable
and very soft.
39
![Page 40: Jemina Puddle Duck, Beatrix Potter, AutoPlay](https://reader037.fdocuments.net/reader037/viewer/2022102605/544975d0b1af9f7c418b463d/html5/thumbnails/40.jpg)
Jemima Puddle-Duck was rather surprised
to find such a vast quantity of feathers.
40
![Page 41: Jemina Puddle Duck, Beatrix Potter, AutoPlay](https://reader037.fdocuments.net/reader037/viewer/2022102605/544975d0b1af9f7c418b463d/html5/thumbnails/41.jpg)
But it was very comfortable;
and she made a nest without any trouble at all.
41
![Page 42: Jemina Puddle Duck, Beatrix Potter, AutoPlay](https://reader037.fdocuments.net/reader037/viewer/2022102605/544975d0b1af9f7c418b463d/html5/thumbnails/42.jpg)
When she came out,
the sandy-whiskered gentleman was sitting on a log
reading the newspaper --
42
![Page 43: Jemina Puddle Duck, Beatrix Potter, AutoPlay](https://reader037.fdocuments.net/reader037/viewer/2022102605/544975d0b1af9f7c418b463d/html5/thumbnails/43.jpg)
– at least he had it spread out,
but he was looking over the top of it.
43
![Page 44: Jemina Puddle Duck, Beatrix Potter, AutoPlay](https://reader037.fdocuments.net/reader037/viewer/2022102605/544975d0b1af9f7c418b463d/html5/thumbnails/44.jpg)
He was so polite,
that he seemed almost sorry to let Jemima go home for the night.
44
![Page 45: Jemina Puddle Duck, Beatrix Potter, AutoPlay](https://reader037.fdocuments.net/reader037/viewer/2022102605/544975d0b1af9f7c418b463d/html5/thumbnails/45.jpg)
He promised to take great careof her nest
until she came backthe next day.
45
![Page 46: Jemina Puddle Duck, Beatrix Potter, AutoPlay](https://reader037.fdocuments.net/reader037/viewer/2022102605/544975d0b1af9f7c418b463d/html5/thumbnails/46.jpg)
He said he loved eggs and ducklings;
he should be proud to see a fine nest-full in his wood-shed.
46
![Page 47: Jemina Puddle Duck, Beatrix Potter, AutoPlay](https://reader037.fdocuments.net/reader037/viewer/2022102605/544975d0b1af9f7c418b463d/html5/thumbnails/47.jpg)
Jemima Puddle-Duck came every afternoon;
she laid nine eggs in the nest.
The foxy gentleman admired them immensely.
47
![Page 48: Jemina Puddle Duck, Beatrix Potter, AutoPlay](https://reader037.fdocuments.net/reader037/viewer/2022102605/544975d0b1af9f7c418b463d/html5/thumbnails/48.jpg)
At last Jemima told him that she intended to begin to sit next day –
“and I will bring a bag of corn with me,
48
![Page 49: Jemina Puddle Duck, Beatrix Potter, AutoPlay](https://reader037.fdocuments.net/reader037/viewer/2022102605/544975d0b1af9f7c418b463d/html5/thumbnails/49.jpg)
so that I need never leave my nest
until the eggs are hatched.
They might catch cold,”
said the conscientious Jemima.
49
![Page 50: Jemina Puddle Duck, Beatrix Potter, AutoPlay](https://reader037.fdocuments.net/reader037/viewer/2022102605/544975d0b1af9f7c418b463d/html5/thumbnails/50.jpg)
“Madam,
I beg you not to trouble yourself with a bag; I will provide oats.
50
![Page 51: Jemina Puddle Duck, Beatrix Potter, AutoPlay](https://reader037.fdocuments.net/reader037/viewer/2022102605/544975d0b1af9f7c418b463d/html5/thumbnails/51.jpg)
“But
before you commence your tedious sitting,
I intend to give you a treat.
51
![Page 52: Jemina Puddle Duck, Beatrix Potter, AutoPlay](https://reader037.fdocuments.net/reader037/viewer/2022102605/544975d0b1af9f7c418b463d/html5/thumbnails/52.jpg)
“Let us have a dinner-party
all to ourselves!
52
![Page 53: Jemina Puddle Duck, Beatrix Potter, AutoPlay](https://reader037.fdocuments.net/reader037/viewer/2022102605/544975d0b1af9f7c418b463d/html5/thumbnails/53.jpg)
“May I ask you to bring up some herbs from the farm-garden
to make a savory omelet?
53
![Page 54: Jemina Puddle Duck, Beatrix Potter, AutoPlay](https://reader037.fdocuments.net/reader037/viewer/2022102605/544975d0b1af9f7c418b463d/html5/thumbnails/54.jpg)
“Sage and thyme,
and mint
and two onions,
and some parsley.
54
![Page 55: Jemina Puddle Duck, Beatrix Potter, AutoPlay](https://reader037.fdocuments.net/reader037/viewer/2022102605/544975d0b1af9f7c418b463d/html5/thumbnails/55.jpg)
“I will provide lard for the omelet,"
said the hospitable gentleman with sandy whiskers.
55
![Page 56: Jemina Puddle Duck, Beatrix Potter, AutoPlay](https://reader037.fdocuments.net/reader037/viewer/2022102605/544975d0b1af9f7c418b463d/html5/thumbnails/56.jpg)
Jemima Puddle-Duckwas a simpleton:
not even the mention of sage and onions made her suspicious.
56
![Page 57: Jemina Puddle Duck, Beatrix Potter, AutoPlay](https://reader037.fdocuments.net/reader037/viewer/2022102605/544975d0b1af9f7c418b463d/html5/thumbnails/57.jpg)
She went round the farm-garden,
nibbling off snippets of all the different sorts of herbs
that are used for stuffing roast duck.
57
![Page 58: Jemina Puddle Duck, Beatrix Potter, AutoPlay](https://reader037.fdocuments.net/reader037/viewer/2022102605/544975d0b1af9f7c418b463d/html5/thumbnails/58.jpg)
And she waddled into the kitchen,
and got two onions out of a basket.
58
![Page 59: Jemina Puddle Duck, Beatrix Potter, AutoPlay](https://reader037.fdocuments.net/reader037/viewer/2022102605/544975d0b1af9f7c418b463d/html5/thumbnails/59.jpg)
The collie-dog Kep met her coming out,
“What are you doing with those onions?
59
![Page 60: Jemina Puddle Duck, Beatrix Potter, AutoPlay](https://reader037.fdocuments.net/reader037/viewer/2022102605/544975d0b1af9f7c418b463d/html5/thumbnails/60.jpg)
Where do you go every afternoon by yourself,
Jemima Puddle-Duck?”
60
![Page 61: Jemina Puddle Duck, Beatrix Potter, AutoPlay](https://reader037.fdocuments.net/reader037/viewer/2022102605/544975d0b1af9f7c418b463d/html5/thumbnails/61.jpg)
Jemima was rather in awe of the collie;
she told him the whole story.
61
![Page 62: Jemina Puddle Duck, Beatrix Potter, AutoPlay](https://reader037.fdocuments.net/reader037/viewer/2022102605/544975d0b1af9f7c418b463d/html5/thumbnails/62.jpg)
The collie listened, with his wide head on one side;
he grinned when she described the polite gentleman with sandy whiskers.
62
![Page 63: Jemina Puddle Duck, Beatrix Potter, AutoPlay](https://reader037.fdocuments.net/reader037/viewer/2022102605/544975d0b1af9f7c418b463d/html5/thumbnails/63.jpg)
He asked several questionsabout the wood,
and about the exact position of the house and shed.
63
![Page 64: Jemina Puddle Duck, Beatrix Potter, AutoPlay](https://reader037.fdocuments.net/reader037/viewer/2022102605/544975d0b1af9f7c418b463d/html5/thumbnails/64.jpg)
Then he left,
and trotted down to the village.
He went to look for two fox-houndpuppies
who were walkingwith the butcher.
64
![Page 65: Jemina Puddle Duck, Beatrix Potter, AutoPlay](https://reader037.fdocuments.net/reader037/viewer/2022102605/544975d0b1af9f7c418b463d/html5/thumbnails/65.jpg)
Jemima Puddle-Duck
went up the cart-road for the last time, on a sunny afternoon.
65
![Page 66: Jemina Puddle Duck, Beatrix Potter, AutoPlay](https://reader037.fdocuments.net/reader037/viewer/2022102605/544975d0b1af9f7c418b463d/html5/thumbnails/66.jpg)
She was rather burdened with two bunches of herbs
and the two onions in a bag.
66
![Page 67: Jemina Puddle Duck, Beatrix Potter, AutoPlay](https://reader037.fdocuments.net/reader037/viewer/2022102605/544975d0b1af9f7c418b463d/html5/thumbnails/67.jpg)
She flew over the wood,
and alighted opposite the house
of the bushy long-tailed gentleman.
67
![Page 68: Jemina Puddle Duck, Beatrix Potter, AutoPlay](https://reader037.fdocuments.net/reader037/viewer/2022102605/544975d0b1af9f7c418b463d/html5/thumbnails/68.jpg)
He was sitting on a log;
he sniffed the air,
and kept glancing uneasily round the wood
68
![Page 69: Jemina Puddle Duck, Beatrix Potter, AutoPlay](https://reader037.fdocuments.net/reader037/viewer/2022102605/544975d0b1af9f7c418b463d/html5/thumbnails/69.jpg)
When Jemima alighted,
he quite jumped.
69
![Page 70: Jemina Puddle Duck, Beatrix Potter, AutoPlay](https://reader037.fdocuments.net/reader037/viewer/2022102605/544975d0b1af9f7c418b463d/html5/thumbnails/70.jpg)
“Come into the house
as soon as you have looked at your eggs.
70
![Page 71: Jemina Puddle Duck, Beatrix Potter, AutoPlay](https://reader037.fdocuments.net/reader037/viewer/2022102605/544975d0b1af9f7c418b463d/html5/thumbnails/71.jpg)
“Give me the herbs for the omelet.
Be quick!”

He was rather abrupt.
Jemima Puddle-Duck
had never heard him speak like that.
72
![Page 73: Jemina Puddle Duck, Beatrix Potter, AutoPlay](https://reader037.fdocuments.net/reader037/viewer/2022102605/544975d0b1af9f7c418b463d/html5/thumbnails/73.jpg)
She felt surprised,
and uncomfortable.
73
![Page 74: Jemina Puddle Duck, Beatrix Potter, AutoPlay](https://reader037.fdocuments.net/reader037/viewer/2022102605/544975d0b1af9f7c418b463d/html5/thumbnails/74.jpg)
While she was inside
she heard pattering feet round the back of the shed.
74
![Page 75: Jemina Puddle Duck, Beatrix Potter, AutoPlay](https://reader037.fdocuments.net/reader037/viewer/2022102605/544975d0b1af9f7c418b463d/html5/thumbnails/75.jpg)
Some one with a black nose sniffed at the bottom of the door,
and then locked it.
75
![Page 76: Jemina Puddle Duck, Beatrix Potter, AutoPlay](https://reader037.fdocuments.net/reader037/viewer/2022102605/544975d0b1af9f7c418b463d/html5/thumbnails/76.jpg)
Jemima became
much alarmed.
76
![Page 77: Jemina Puddle Duck, Beatrix Potter, AutoPlay](https://reader037.fdocuments.net/reader037/viewer/2022102605/544975d0b1af9f7c418b463d/html5/thumbnails/77.jpg)
A moment afterwards there wasmost awful noises --
-- barking,
baying,
growls and howls,
squealing
and groans.
77
![Page 78: Jemina Puddle Duck, Beatrix Potter, AutoPlay](https://reader037.fdocuments.net/reader037/viewer/2022102605/544975d0b1af9f7c418b463d/html5/thumbnails/78.jpg)
And nothing more was ever seen of that foxy-whiskeredgentleman.
78
![Page 79: Jemina Puddle Duck, Beatrix Potter, AutoPlay](https://reader037.fdocuments.net/reader037/viewer/2022102605/544975d0b1af9f7c418b463d/html5/thumbnails/79.jpg)
Presently Kep opened the door of the shed,
and let out Jemima Puddle-Duck.
79
![Page 80: Jemina Puddle Duck, Beatrix Potter, AutoPlay](https://reader037.fdocuments.net/reader037/viewer/2022102605/544975d0b1af9f7c418b463d/html5/thumbnails/80.jpg)
Unfortunately the puppies rushed in
and gobbled up all the eggs
before he could stop them.
80
![Page 81: Jemina Puddle Duck, Beatrix Potter, AutoPlay](https://reader037.fdocuments.net/reader037/viewer/2022102605/544975d0b1af9f7c418b463d/html5/thumbnails/81.jpg)
He had a bite on his ear
and both the puppies were limping.
81
![Page 82: Jemina Puddle Duck, Beatrix Potter, AutoPlay](https://reader037.fdocuments.net/reader037/viewer/2022102605/544975d0b1af9f7c418b463d/html5/thumbnails/82.jpg)
Jemima Puddle-Duck was escorted home in tears
on account of those eggs.
82
![Page 83: Jemina Puddle Duck, Beatrix Potter, AutoPlay](https://reader037.fdocuments.net/reader037/viewer/2022102605/544975d0b1af9f7c418b463d/html5/thumbnails/83.jpg)
She laid some more in June,
and she was permitted to keep them herself:
but only four of them hatched.
83
![Page 84: Jemina Puddle Duck, Beatrix Potter, AutoPlay](https://reader037.fdocuments.net/reader037/viewer/2022102605/544975d0b1af9f7c418b463d/html5/thumbnails/84.jpg)
Jemima Puddle-Duck said that it was because of her nerves;
---but she had always been a bad sitter.

THE END
