JOHN HAMILTON WANTED TO CREATE A REFRESHED LOOK FOR HIS BACKYARD, A SMALL

GRASSED AREA OPENING UP FROM THE HOUSE THROUGH TWO SETS OF BI-FOLD DOORS.

The task was to create a harmonious transition from this interior space to the garden to create an outdoor room

effect. Boral’s Aspenstone® pavers were chosen for their durability and resilience as well as their aesthetic appeal.

In this beachside location, they provide a hard-wearing surface that is salt safe and water resistant.

The expansive eucalypt at the rear of the garden meant that the grass wasn’t thriving. By covering the grass

with Aspenstone® pavers, the Hamiltons gained a new entertaining area that complemented the look of their

home, created less garden to water, and importantly was low maintenance giving them more time to enjoy their

outdoor space.

Aspenstone pavers in Cappuccino were used in this

makeover – a new colour in the Aspenstone® range.

These pavers are also available in Vanilla, and popular

favourite, Buttermilk. By matching the paving colour

with their internal walls, this family’s indoor/outdoor

transition was complete.

This paver is designed to work with Australian weather

conditions and lifestyle, with the look of real stone

– a winning combination.

DIY FACTORAspenstone® is easy to lay

yourself. Its large rectangular

shape speeds up the laying

process, and its consistent sizing

makes measuring easy.

Although Aspenstone®

pavers are pre-sealed, Boral

recommends that all pavers

should be sealed again with

a quality penetrating sealer

following installation.

Picking up on the latest colour trends of warm

hues in earthy tones, this garden makeover uses

two feature products: Aspenstone® Vanilla

pavers and Arena® retaining wall blocks in Fudge.

The contrast in the colours of the wall and

paving are a feature of the space and the

combination of products in the steps bring

the look together beautifully.

TREND SPOTTERVanilla is a new colour in the

Aspenstone® paving range and can be used to create a variety of looks – your imagination is

your only limitation!

The Arena® retaining wall not only looks great with

its textural fi nish, but it is also a practical solution for

quick fi x garden makeovers. Arena® is affordable,

easy to install, lightweight and does not require

preparation work – a DIY dream.

The new wall colour Fudge used in this build

provides contrast, warmth and a basis to add modern

garden furnishings and accessories.

Interior

designers often

say that texture and colour

are two of the most important

elements in creating the

wow factor in homes.

You can use this same

technique outdoors with the

right combination of wall and

paving products.

We gave this traditional garden a

country-feel nip’n’tuck to create a

contemplative and versatile space.

The blocks also require no wall capping – even more time

and money saved!

Boral comes to the renovation rescue with a

combination of retaining wall and paving products

that provide the answers.

Our new Arena® retaining wall blocks were used to

create this country look at a budget price. Arena®

is designed to be an easy to build product. It solves

common problems often faced by budding builders

to create a professional look.

Boral has designed these blocks so that no messy

mortar or special tools are required.

This product also comes

with a universal corner,

which means no time-

consuming block cutting,

plus it’s lightweight but

strong enough to do the job.

FAMOUS ENGLISH FASHION STYLISTS TRINNY

AND SUSANNAH HAVE HELPED PEOPLE

AROUND THE WORLD CHOOSE CLOTHES TO

SUIT THEIR BODY SHAPE. WE’VE TAKEN THE

‘WHAT NOT TO WEAR’ CHALLENGE TO SEE IF

THE SAME RULES CAN APPLY TO THE GARDEN.

Just as a set of new well-fi tting clothes can make

us feel great about ourselves, a garden can also

have the power to change our moods.

A drab, overgrown garden can easily make us feel that

there is an insurmountable amount of work involved to

make the garden useful, and too often we just ignore it

and go back indoors. It is incredibly frustrating to know

you have the outdoor space, but can’t use it to make

the most of your lifestyle and leisure time.

We’ve created some gardens using

the Trinny and Susannah approach and hope we can

get the creative juices fl owing on how you can ‘frock

up’ your own outdoor space.

Just like the body is made up of parts to clothe and

fl atter, so is your garden.

It’s not just established gardens

and outdoor areas that can benefi t

from DIY makeovers. This modern

Gold Coast home has been treated

to a paving makeover using Boral

pavers ideal for modern settings.

PRODUCT USED IN THIS MAKEOVER:

Stoneworks™

Travertine in Chalk

This paver is a perfect choice for pool surrounds. Chalk is a new colour in this range and perfect for modern home applications. It is available in a standard and a bullnose paver, and measures 500mm x 500mm x 40mm.

The following three home

outdoor areas have been

Boral products.

PRODUCTS USED IN THIS MAKEOVER:

Stoneworks™ Travertine in Smoke

A popular paver because of its naturally-aged appearance and suitability for paths, patios and pools. It is available in a standard and a bullnose paver, and measures 500mm x 500mm.

River Pebble™

A new and exciting product that provides a natural pattern for outdoor settings. With three different paver units available, all in 450mm x 450mm size, this paver can be used for a variety of applications. Lay with Geo-Fix® mortar.

Geo-Fix®

This is a new paving joint mortar, perfect to use with River Pebble™ pavers. This product saves paving time by up to 20%, as it does not require trowelling, hiring a compactor, wasting water or cleaning to complete the task.

THE OWNERS OF THIS SYDNEY

BEACHSIDE HOME WANTED TO REFRESH

THEIR DRIVEWAY AREA WITH A

NATURAL, MODERN LOOK.

Rather than continuing the area with the

standard paving used on the driveway, the

owners chose a contrasting pattern and products in

complementary colour tones.

Boral’s new River Pebble™ pavers were used in

the majority of the space, but actually became a

feature when bordered by Stoneworks™ Travertine

pavers. The colour of the pebbles provided

contrasting brown tones and the result was a new

living space that helped to modernise the entry

statement to this home.

The best news about this makeover is the

simplicity of laying the River Pebble™ product – it’s

not as complicated as it looks because the paver

units fi t like a jigsaw puzzle and the new Geo-Fix®

mortar doesn’t need any messy preparation or

equipment – all it takes is to scatter it on the

pavers, sweep it in and leave it to set.

JUST THINK• Can a disused corner of the garden

be transformed into a gorgeous

The only feature of this garden was once the old tree.

The grass that lay beneath the tree was patchy and too shaded

from the sun so the space was rarely used by its owners.

The garden needed some defi nition and a large level area

where the owners could enjoy entertaining or just relaxing

in their garden space.

The rules for fashion styling and garden design are the same:

add contrast and fl air by using accessories; in this case a

retaining wall.

The addition of Boral’s River Pebble™ pavers

and Hadrian Wall® gave the garden different

focal points and features that look as if they

have always been there.

MOW NO MOREDo you have grass that refuses

to fl ourish and remains patchy

and full of weeds? Replace it with

stylish paving – you don’t have to

do the entire garden – a square of

feature paving might just

do the trick.

PAVERS AND RETAINING WALLS ARE IMPORTANT IN SETTING THE TONE FOR

AN ENTERTAINMENT AREA AND PAVILION AS THEY DEFINE THE SPACE, ADD COLOUR, TEXTURE AND INTEREST.

Australians are becoming more environmentally aware

and increasingly want a connection with nature in

their gardens. Thus, the idea of the backyard as a private sanctuary is stronger than ever. This translates into designing spaces with waterwise plants, homegrown vegetables and fruits, paved outdoor entertainment areas and ‘outdoor pavilions’. The outdoor pavilion, or ‘extra room’, has become a major focal point of the garden. Built-in seating, kitchens, fi replaces and barbecues under a permanent shade structure allow the ‘extra room’ to be enjoyed all year round and any time of the day if night lighting has been installed.

3. The use of light coloured pavers and walls can brighten

up a dreary part of the garden.

A strong trend in new

garden design is textural

contrasts of outdoor materials.

This can be achieved in simple

ways. Create a showcase of

interesting pots (used like

sculptural pieces), or use

coloured and textured paving

with timber, large pebbles, wall

art and generous planting beds.

Metal is a new dominant outdoor

feature. Oxidised steel panels

act as wall art or screening.

Combine them with delicate

planting such as native grasses

that soften the edges.

Combining large and

small format pavers

can add textural

qualities to a space.

TREES THAT SHOW SEASONAL

CHANGE ARE FASHIONABLE.

9. Pavers wrapped around 9. Pavers wrapped around a small tree or row of a small tree or row of trees is very effective trees is very effective

and stylish.and stylish.

5. Pavers, retaining walls and plantings work hand in hand both texturally

and tonally.

10. LET IT FLOWNatural free-fl owing spaces are becoming more prevalent in garden design. The hard-edged angular look is still omnipresent but wherever possible softer curves are being introduced.

Soft lines can be created by:• Using curved pathways to connect different outdoor spaces. • Changing paving material and patterns to alter the mood and direction of an outdoor space.• Creating a fl owing line with pavers and retaining walls.

6. Mulches are also

a strong part of the

dry garden and add

another textural and

tonal element.

7

WHAT TO PLANT?

Foliage plants are still

popular and include

succulents, native grasses,

variegated plants with stripy

whites, yellow, pinks and

greens, cordylines for their

sculptural forms and red hues.

Popular plant colours are silver,

grey, pink and burgundy.

Combinations of waterwise

native, indigenous and exotic

plants are fl ourishing along

with the Mediterranean garden.

Choose ornamental grasses,

aloes, lillipillies, salvias,

artemisias and dwarf oleanders.

Small trees, such as olive,

frangipani and magnolia ‘Little

Gem’ allow natural shade and

complement a waterwise

garden design.

We light candles and

us together.

The visual appeal of the

raised beds is great. Boral did a fantastic job on the replication of natural stone and having the beds high makes it much easier to work in the patch – I don’t need to bend down.It inspired me to make my grandmother’s famous beetroot recipe and the children really got into the garden. They enjoy pulling out the beetroot or cutting the lettuce for dinner. It actually made them eat more vegetables and try new things.
