Arc welding is a generic term for a process during which an electric arc is created between an electrode and the parts to be assembled.
• Electric welding, a trade for expertsWelders carry out assembly by melting or applying fi ller metal to sections or elements of various parts using an electric arc or other welding processes (coated electrode, TIG, MIG, MAG) and the appropriate equipment (welding station, welding set, etc.). Manual skill is one of the most important factors of the process.
• electric arc welding with coated electrodesThis is the best known welding process.When the coated electrode approaches the parts to be assembled, an electric arc is created which releases strong heat causing the electrode to melt.Coated electrodes: for welding carbon steels or light alloy steels - for welding stainless steels.
• Arc welding with non-consumable electrodes: tig weldingThe electric arc is created between the sheet metal to be welded and a non-consumable W electrode protected by an inert gas (Argon or Helium). TIG stands for "tungsten inert gas" where "Tungsten" refers to the electrode and "Inert Gas" the type of plasma gas used. This welding process falls into the category of arc welding processes with a non-consumable electrode. The arc is created between the refractory electrode (- of the generator) and the part (+ of the generator) under a gaseous fl ux; generally, it is a rare gas or a mixture of rare gases. T.I.G. welding is especially used for welding thin sheet metals, but more particularly for all metals that are diffi cult to weld. These metals include aluminium, magnesium, stainless steel, copper and its alloys, and carbon steels of various thicknesses.• Tungsten electrodes with a 1% to 2% thorium content are
particularly used for welding light alloy steels (soft steel). This type of electrode requires lower amperage.
• Tungsten-zirconium electrodes have the highest melting point and are most frequently used for welding aluminium.

Whether in a clear or darkened state, they ensure permanent protection against UV/ IR emissions, heat, sparks and projections. The fi lter’s degree of protection is defi ned to avoid "blinding" by the electric arc.
Active welding fi lters must always be used with a welding helmet.
When an electric arc is struck, the active welding fi lters automatically darken and when the arc is extinguished, they return to their initial clear state. Cornea:The front transparent part of the eye, protective envelope of the sclera or the white of the eye.
iris:Rear part of the choroid, rich in pigments and blood vessels. This is the eye nourishing tissue. It contracts or dilates depending on light intensity.
Pupil:Circular opening in the centre of the iris whose diameter increases or shrinks depending on light intensity. It acts as a diaphragm.
Retina:Layer of nerve tissue at the back of the eye. The retina captures light rays and sends them to the brain via the optic nerve.
lens:Bi-convex transparent lens about 9 mm in diameter. It is composed of fl exible fi bres laid out in layers, and forces light rays to converge onto the retina for focused vision. The lens may become opaque, leading to a cataract operation to removes the lens.

single vision lenses:Called single vision, these lenses feature one correction for a given distance: myopia, hypermetropia and/or astigmatism. They are known as single vision because the optical power is the same for the entire lens.
Bifocal lenses:Bifocal lenses are designed for people who require two corrections, one for distance and one for near vision. The top part of the lens corrects distance vision and the lower part corrects near vision.
Progressive or varifocal lenses:Varifocal lenses do not have any visible lines so they are more aesthetically appealing. The power gradually changes from the top to the bottom of the lens. It is a more functional lens because the person wearing this type of lens has “continuous” vision. It makes it possible to focus on objects at variable distances whereas a bifocal lens only allows clear vision at two given distances.
free form lenses:Available on a wide range of lenses, Digital Free Form technology combines the highest level of visual performance with outstanding style. It results from an improved inner part of the lens with a signifi cantly larger fi eld of vision. This has been achieved by bringing the optical surface of the eye closer, with progression and cylinder correction on the inner surface of the lens. This manufacturing process is a result of a reduction in peripheral distortion and an improvement in the fi eld of vision compared with standard progressive lenses. The result is a Digital Free Form lens based on the individual requirements of the user without the need for additional eye tests or specifi c opticians' instruments. Thanks to the new Digital Free Form technology, 98% of users who have taken part in acceptance testing have adopted these lenses very quickly.

Its main properties are excellent optical quality and good scratch resistance. Thus, nearly 92% of light is transmitted by toughened glass. In addition to its high weight, its main disadvantage lies in its low impact resistance and the fact that it breaks into several small pieces that could damage the eye.

CR39:This is a plastic resin. It is durable and plastic lenses are 50% lighter, less likely to fog up and they absorb some ultraviolet rays. On the other hand, they scratch easily and to prevent this an anti-scratch coating is required. At equal power, they are thicker than toughened glass lenses. An anti-refl ective coating is less effective here than on glass lenses.

Polycarbonate:The main feature of polycarbonate is its resistance to impact. This lens is by far the most resistant of all. Polycarbonate is 10% thinner than glass and 15% thinner than plastic. But it is a soft plastic and is therefore easily scratched so an anti-scratch coating is applied as standard. This material is particularly recommended for protection in the workplace. Polycarbonate provides the added advantage of absorbing all ultraviolet rays up to 380 nm (99.99%).

Myopia (short-sightedness):Short-sighted people can see close up but objects at a distance are blurred. This is because the image perceived by the eye is no longer projected perfectly on the retina but in front of it.
Hypermetropia (long-sightedness):Long-sighted people can see objects at a distance but those close up are blurred. This is because the image perceived by the eye is no longer projected perfectly on the retina but behind it.
Astigmatism:People with astigmatism have distorted vision at all distances. This condition is due to an abnormal curve of the cornea and/or crystalline lens.
Presbyopia (age-related long-sightedness):People with presbyopia have blurred near vision (for reading in particular) as, with time, the crystalline lens loses its elasticity and its ability to focus on images perceived.

Crystalline lens
Vision begins when light rays enter the eye through the cornea, the fi rst transparent tissue. Then, the rays pass through the pupil whose size varies according to the quantity of light that enters the eye. The light rays then pass through the crystalline lens, which, by changing its shape, focuses the light rays on the retina. The information then travels to the brain via the optic nerve, for interpretation.
