UVODNIK
Spoštovani prijatelji slovenskih poštnih znamk,
vsako leto se prav posebej veselim marčevskega Biltena, saj dobimo z njim tudi najlepšo slovensko znamko preteklega leta. Tudi tokrat je seveda tako, a ničesar ne bom prišepnila že na začetku: vabim vas, da v notranjosti Biltena preberete, katere znamke ste izbrali za najlepše. Seveda objavljamo tudi imena desetih nagrajencev, ki bodo prejeli komplete slovenskih znamk. Moje iskrene čestitke!
Ponosna sem, da marca izidejo kar tri redne znamke z velikonočnimi motivi. Sicer pa tudi tokrat nadaljujemo že uveljavljene serije znamk: v seriji Fosilni sesalci Slovenije predstavljamo mastodona, v seriji Turizem vas vabimo v Koper, serija Rastlinstvo pa prikazuje zdravilne rastline. Svojo znamko si po 100 letih delovanja zagotovo zasluži tudi hidroelektrarna Fala, z znamko pa obeležujemo tudi svetovni dan oblikovanja.
Opozoriti želim le na zanimivost pri znamki z motivom zoba mastodona. Z aplikacijo HP Reveal lahko namreč na mobilni napravi opazujemo globinski rentgenski video posnetek prereza zoba mastodona. Vabljeni, da si na GooglePlay ali AppStore poiščete aplikacijo in jo namestite na telefon.

Sehr geehrte Liebhaber slowenischer Briefmarken,
jedes Jahr freue ich mich ganz besonders auf die Märzausgabe des Bulletins, da wir in dieser Ausgabe auch die schönste slowenische Briefmarke des vergangenen Jahres küren. Auch diesmal ist dies so, doch möchte ich hier noch nichts verraten, sondern Sie lieber dazu einladen, im Bulletin nachzulesen, welche Briefmarke von Ihnen zur schönsten des Jahres gewählt wurde. Natürlich sind auch die Namen der zehn Gewinner, die eine Motivsammlung slowenischer Briefmarken erhalten, veröffentlicht. Herzlichen Glückwunsch!
Ich bin stolz darauf, dass im März gleich drei Dauerbriefmarken mit Ostermotiven erscheinen. Ansonsten setzen wir auch diesmal schon bekannte Briefmarkenreihen fort: In der Reihe Fossile Säugetiere Sloweniens wird der Mastodon vorgestellt, in der Reihe Tourismus laden wir Sie in die Stadt Koper ein und in der Reihe Flora stellen wir Ihnen Heilpflanzen vor. Eine Briefmarke verdient auch das 100-jährige Jubiläum des Wasserkraftwerks Fala, mit einer weiteren Briefmarke ehren wir auch den Welttag des Grafikdesigns.
Ich möchte Sie gerne auf eine interessante Besonderheit bei der Briefmarke mit dem Motiv des Zahns des Mastodons aufmerksam machen. Mit der Applikation HP Reveal können Sie nämlich auf Ihrem Mobilgerät ein Röntgenvideo des Querschnitts des Zahns des Mastodons anschauen. Dear Slovene postage stamp enthusiasts,
Every year I particularly look forward to the March edition of our Bulletin, because it also includes the most beautiful Slovene postage stamp of the previous year. This year is no exception, but I won't give anything away here: instead, I invite you to read the Bulletin and find out which stamps have been chosen as the most beautiful. Naturally, we also publish the names of the ten winners, who will receive sets of Slovene postage stamps as a prize. My sincere congratulations to them!
I am particularly proud that three definitive stamps with Easter designs are coming out this March. We are also continuing with our established stamp series: in the Fossil Mammals of Slovenia series we present the mastodon, in the Tourism series we invite you to Koper, and in the Flora series we look at medicinal plants. The Fala hydropower plant also gets its own stamp to mark its centenary. Another new stamp marks World Design Day.
I would like to draw your attention to an interesting feature of the stamp featuring a mastodon's tooth. Blagoslovljene in vesele velikonočne praznike!
Velika noč je poleg božiča največji in tudi najstarejši krščanski praznik. Datum praznika se spreminja, vsako leto ga določimo po luni. Velika noč je vedno na prvo nedeljo po prvi pomladanski polni luni, torej med 22. marcem in 25. aprilom.
Seveda v zvezi s praznovanjem velike noči ne moremo govoriti le o enem ali dveh dnevih, ampak kar o celotnem obdobju od srede po pustnem torku (t. i. pepelnična sreda) do velikonočne nedelje. Velikonočni čas pa sega vse do binkošti. Torej je v tem celotnem obdobju cela vrsta šeg in navad. Te ne izvirajo iz najstarejših obdobij krščanstva in niso le spomin na pomembne dogodke v Bibliji, ampak so veliko starejše, saj po svojih sestavinah segajo v davna, predkrščanska, torej poganska obdobja.
Velikonočni prazniki so »postavljeni« v čas, ki pomeni konec zgodnje in začetek prave, zelene pomladi, zato lahko v mnogih sestavinah posameznih šeg odkrijemo različne oblike starih verovanj, povezanih z duhovi plodnosti in rasti. Ti naj bi ljudem zagotavljali dobro letino, zdravje družini in živini in vse, kar je bilo potrebno za nemoteno življenje. Krščanstvo je veliko teh sestavin prevzelo in jih navezalo oz. prilagodilo svojim namenom in seveda koledarju. Tako se teden pred veliko nočjo imenuje veliki teden. Uvaja ga cvetna nedelja, ki je od 9. stoletja krščanski spomin na sprejem Kristusa ob njegovem prihodu v Jeruzalem, toda vse je veliko starejše. Že v predkrščanstvu so ljudje obhajali praznik, povezan z verovanjem v neko posebno, nadnaravno moč rastlinja, dreves, grmov, zelišč in cvetlic. Te naj bi pospeševale plodnost, odganjale zle duhove, varovale ljudi in živino pred strelo in drugimi nezgodami.

A Blessed and Happy Easter to You All!
Along with Christmas, Easter is one of the biggest and oldest Christian holidays. It is a "movable feast", meaning that it does not fall on the same date every year. Instead the date must be computed each year according to the phases of the moon. Easter always falls on the first Sunday after the first spring full moon, in other words between 22 March and 25 April.
When we talk about Easter, of course, we are not only referring to the one or two days of the celebration itself, but to the entire period from the Wednesday after Shrove Tuesday (known as Ash Wednesday) until Easter Sunday. "Eastertide" meanwhile, refers to the period of fifty days between Easter Sunday and Pentecost Sunday. Throughout this period a whole series of customs and traditions are observed. These do not only derive from the earliest periods of Christianity and are not merely a commemoration of events in the Bible but are in fact much older, with elements dating back to ancient, pre-Christian, pagan periods.
The Easter festivities fall at a time that represents the end of early spring and the start of the true, green spring, so in many elements of individual costumes we can detect various forms of old beliefs connected to the spirits of fertility and growth. These were believed to ensure a good harvest, health for the family and livestock, and everything necessary for a tranquil life. Christianity took over many of these elements and adapted them to its own purposes and, of course, its calendar. Thus, for example, the week before Easter is called Holy Week. It begins on Palm Sunday, which since the ninth century has represented the Christian memory of Christ's reception on his arrival in Jerusalem, but is actually far older. Even in pre-Christian times, people celebrated a festivity connected to belief in the special, supernatural power of plants, trees, bushes, herbs and flowers. These were believed to increase fertility, ward off evil spirits, and protect against lightning bolts and other misadventures that could befall people and animals.

Gesegnete und frohe Ostern!
Ostern ist neben Weihnachten das größte und auch älteste christliche Fest. Das Datum des Feiertags variiert im Kalender und wird jedes Jahr entsprechend dem Vollmond bestimmt. Ostern fällt immer auf den ersten Sonntag nach dem ersten Frühjahrsvollmond, also zwischen den 22. März und den 25. April.
Natürlich dauert das Osterfest nicht nur ein oder zwei Tage, sondern von Aschermittwoch, der dem Fastnachtsdienstag folgt, bis zum Ostersonntag. Die Osterzeit dagegen reicht bis zu Pfingsten. Daher gibt es in diesem Zeitraum eine ganze Reihe von Bräuchen und Sitten. Diese Bräuche stammen nicht nur aus den ältesten Epochen des Christentums und sind nicht nur Gedenken an bedeutende Ereignisse aus der Bibel, sondern sind viel älter und reichen anhand ihrer Bestandteile in längst vergangene, vorchristliche, also heidnische Zeiten zurück.
Das Osterfest wird in einer Zeit gefeiert, die das Ende des Vorfrühlings und den Beginn des wahren, grünen Frühlings bedeutet, daher kann man in vielen Bräuchen verschiedene Formen alter Glauben entdecken, die mit den Geistern der Fruchtbarkeit und des Wachstums verbunden sind. Diese sollten den Menschen eine gute Ernte, Gesundheit für die Familie und das Vieh sowie alles zum Leben Notwendige sichern. Das Christentum hat viele dieser Bestandteile übernommen und sie seinen Zwecken und natürlich auch dem Kalender angepasst. So wird die Woche vor Ostern Karwoche genannt. Die Karwoche beginnt am Palmsonntag, der seit dem 9. Jahrhundert mit der christlichen Erinnerung an den Empfang Jesu bei seinem Einzug in Jerusalem verbunden ist. Doch das Brauchtum ist noch viel älter. Schon in der vorchristlichen Zeit feierten die Menschen Feste, die mit dem Glauben an besondere, übernatürliche Kräfte von Pflanzen, Bäumen, Sträuchern, Kräutern und Blumen verbunden waren. Diese sollten die Fruchtbarkeit steigern, böse Geister verjagen sowie die Menschen und Tiere vor Blitz und anderen Naturgewalten schützen.

100 let delovanja hidroelektrarne Fala
Leta 1913 se je začela gradnja prve hidroelektrarne na reki Dravi – hidroelektrarne Fala, ki je bila hkrati največja hidroelektrarna v Vzhodnih Alpah.
Vse do leta 1918, ko je začela hidroelektrarna Fala obratovati, je bil rečni tok po vsej dolžini reke Drave neoviran. Z območij, ki so bogata z lesom, je tekla po njej splavarska transportna pot skozi Podravje v Podonavje in naprej proti Črnemu morju. Drava je bila pred zgraditvijo železnice edina, kasneje pa še vedno najcenejša transportna pot za les in drugo blago. Prav zaradi tega je bilo graditeljem elektrarne s koncesijsko pogodbo naloženo, da morajo omogočiti prehajanje splavov prek elektrarne, zaradi česar so zgradili tudi tako imenovano splavnico – v tistem času je od pomladi do zgodnje jeseni peljalo po Dravi dnevno tudi do dvajset splavov s po 90 do 100 m3 lesa – in ribjo stezo.
6. maja 1918 so začeli obratovati prvi trije agregati, 9. maja četrti in 23. maja še peti agregat.
Danes je hidroelektrarna Fala – najstarejša slovenska še delujoča velika hidroelektrarna – del verige osmih hidroelektrarn na reki Dravi, ki jih upravlja družba Dravske elektrarne Maribor.
Z odlokom Vlade Republike Slovenije je bila hidroelektrarna Fala leta 2008 proglašena za kulturni spomenik državnega pomena.

100 Years of the Fala Hydropower Plant
Construction of the first hydropower plant on the river Drava began in 1913. This was the Fala hydropower plant, which was at the same time the biggest hydropower plant in the Eastern Alps.
Until 1918, when the Fala plant began operating, the flow of the Drava was unimpeded along the entire length of the river. The river was part of the timber rafting route that saw timber from richly forested areas transported downstream through the basins of the Drava and Danube and on towards the Black Sea. Before construction of the railway, the Drava was the only way to transport timber and other goods. Even after the advent of the railway, it remained the cheapest route. It was for this reason that the concession contract granted to the builders of the hydropower plant contained a clause requiring them to enable the passage of timber rafts past the hydropower plant. At that time up to twenty rafts consisting of between 90 and 100 cubic metres of timber passed down the Drava every day from spring to early autumn. The builders therefore built a lock system for rafts and a fishway for fish at Fala.
The first three generators came on line on 6 May 1918, followed by a fourth on 9 May and a fifth on 23 May.
Today the Fala hydropower plant – the oldest still operating large hydropower plant in Slovenia – is part of a chain of eight hydropower plants on the Drava operated by Dravske elektrarne Maribor.
In 2008 a government decree proclaimed the Fala hydropower plant a cultural monument of national importance.

100 Jahre Wasserkraftwerk Fala
Im Jahr 1913 begann der Bau des ersten Wasserkraftwerks auf der Drau (slow. Drava) – des Wasserkraftwerks Fala, das zugleich aucs das größte Wasserkraftwerk in den Ostalpen war.
Bis zum Jahr 1918, als das Wasserkraftwerk Fala in Betrieb genommen wurde, floss die Drau auf ihrer gesamten Flusslänge ungehindert. In holzreichen Gebieten verlief ein Floßweg für den Holztransport auf der Drau bis in die Donau und dann weiter bis zum Schwarzen Meer. Die Drau war vor dem Bau der Eisenbahnstrecke der einzige, später noch immer der preiswerteste Transportweg für Holz und andere Waren. Aus diesem Grund wurde den Erbauern des Wasserkraftwerks mittels Konzessionsvertrag auferlegt, die Durchfahrt von Flößen am Wasserkraftwerk zu ermöglichen, weshalb auch eine sogenannte Floßschleuse errichtet wurde. Zu dieser Zeit fuhren von Frühling bis Herbst auf der Drau täglich auch bis zu zwanzig Flöße mit 90 bis 100 Kubikmetern Holz. Zudem wurde auch ein Fischweg gebaut.
Am 6. Mai 1918 wurden die ersten drei Aggregate, am 9. Mai das vierte und am 23. Mai das fünfte Aggregat in Betrieb genommen.
Heute ist das Wasserkraftwerk Fala – das älteste noch aktive große Wasserkraftwerk in Slowenien – Teil einer Kette aus acht Wasserkraftwerken auf der Drau, die vom Unternehmen Dravske elektrarne Maribor geleitet werden.
Mit der Verordnung der Regierung der Republik Slowenien wurde das Wasserkraftwerk Fala 2008 zum Kulturdenkmal von nationaler Bedeutung erklärt.

Mastodon – pradavni gozdni velikan
Pokrajina današnje Slovenije je bila pred približno dvema milijonoma let precej drugačna kot danes. Dvigajoče se Alpe na zahodu in gozdnata pokrajina s posameznimi močvirji ter nepreglednimi ravnicami na vzhodu so bili idealno okolje za velike trobčarje in druge sesalce. Na gozdnatih jasah so se občasno pasli eni zadnjih evropskih mastodonov vrste Anancus arvernensis. Mastodon Anancus arvernensis je sicer poseljeval velik del Evrope in se je pojavil že v obdobju poznega miocena ter preživel vse do začetka pleistocena. Nekatere druge vrste so poseljevale tudi predele Azije in Afrike. Anankus je bil zelo podoben današnjim slonom, pri čemer je imel veliko daljše in izravnane okle ter drugačno obliko zob.
Njihove fosilne ostanke so v Sloveniji našli v Šaleški dolini, pri Slovenski Bistrici in na mnogih mestih v Slovenskih in Čentibskih goricah ter na Goričkem. Najpogosteje so bili odkriti njihovi zobje. Najbolj znano najdišče je bilo odkrito pri vasi Škale blizu Velenja, kjer so odkopali tudi dele skeleta in oklov. Na novi poštni znamki je upodobljen zob mastodona, ki je bil odkrit pred več kot sedem desetletji v gramozni jami blizu Svetega Andraža v Slovenskih goricah. Velik zob (molar) je iz spodnje čeljusti, kar nakazuje tudi močna korenina. Starost zoba ni popolnoma pojasnjena, verjetno pa pripada živali, ki se je pasla po takratnih Slovenskih goricah, poraščenih z redkim gozdom, v poznem pliocenu. Spremembe v okolju v začetku pleistocena, pred približno dvema milijonoma let, so pripomogle tudi k izumrtju zadnjega mastodona, ki je pohajkoval po slovenskem ozemlju.
Zob mastodona si lahko danes ogledate v razstavnih prostorih Prirodoslovnega muzeja Slovenije. Znamka nam pričara dodano ali razširjeno resničnost (AR - Augmented Reality), kjer lahko z aplikacijo HP Reveal s prepoznavo motiva znamke na mobilni napravi opazujemo globinski rentgenski video posnetek prereza zoba mastodona.

The Mastodon – Ancient Giant of the Forests
Two million years ago the landscape of Slovenia was very different from the way we see it today. The soaring Alps in the west and the forested landscape with patches of marsh and endless plains in the east were an ideal environment for large proboscideans and other mammals. One of the last European mastodons – of the Anancus arvernensis species – would periodically graze in forest clearings here. Anancus arvernensis inhabited a large part of Europe, appearing in the late Miocene and surviving until the start of the Pleistocene. Some other species inhabited parts of Asia and Africa. The Anancus was very similar to today's elephants, although with much longer, straight tusks and different-shaped teeth.
Fossil remains have been found in Slovenia in the Šalek Valley, near Slovenska Bistrica and in many parts of the Slovenske Gorice, Čentibske Gorice and Goričko hill regions. Teeth are the most frequently discovered remains. The best-known site for such finds was discovered near the village of Škala, not far from Velenje, where parts of a skeleton and tusks were also unearthed. The new postage stamp depicts a mastodon tooth discovered more than 70 years ago in a gravel pit close to Sveti Andraž in the Slovenske Gorice hill region. This large tooth (a molar) is from the lower jaw, as also indicated by its strong root. The age of the tooth is not entirely clear, but it is likely to have belonged to an animal that grazed this hill area, covered with sparse woodland, in the late Pliocene. Changes in the environment in the early Pleistocene, approximately two million years ago, also contributed to the extinction of the last mastodon to roam across the territory of present-day Slovenia.
Today the mastodon's tooth is on display at the Natural History Museum of Slovenia. The stamp also incorporates a form of augmented reality: use the HP Reveal app to scan the stamp on a mobile device and launch an X-ray video of the cross section of the mastodon's tooth.

Mastodon – der Urzeitwaldriese
Die Landschaft des heutigen Sloweniens war vor etwa zwei Millionen Jahren noch ganz anders als heute. Die sich erhebenden Alpen im Westen und die waldbedeckte Landschaft mit einzelnen Sumpfgebieten sowie die unübersichtlichen Ebenen im Osten waren die ideale Umgebung für die großen Rüsseltiere und andere Säugetiere. Auf Waldlichtungen graste ab und zu einer der letzten europäischen Mastodonten der Art Anancus arvernensis. Der Anancus arvernensis war in großen Teilen Europas verbreitet, lebte schon in der Zeit des späten Miozäns und überlebte bis Anfang des Pleistozäns. Einige andere Arten besiedelten auch Teile Asiens und Afrikas. Der Anancus war dem heutigen Elefanten sehr ähnlich, hatte aber längere und gerade Stoßzähne sowie eine andere Zahnform.
Die fossilen Überreste des Anancus wurden in Slowenien im Šalek-Tal, bei der Ortschaft Slovenska Bistrica und in den Hügellandschaften Čentibske gorice und Goričko gefunden. Am häufigsten fand man die Zähne des Tieres. Der bekannteste Fundort ist beim Dorf Škale in der Nähe der Stadt Velenje, wo auch Teile des Skeletts und der Stoßzähne ausgegraben wurden. Auf der neuen Briefmarke ist ein Zahn des Mastodons abgebildet, der vor mehr als sieben Jahrzehnten in einer Schottergrube in der Nähe der Gemeinde Sveti Andraž im Hügelland Slovenske gorice gefunden wurde. Der große Zahn ist ein Mahlzahn (Molar) aus dem Unterkiefer, worauf auch die kräftige Zahnwurzel hindeutet. Das Alter des Zahns ist nicht vollständig geklärt, doch die Wissenschaftler glauben, er gehört einem Tier, das im späten Pliozän im dem damaligen Hügelland Slovenske gorice, das damals mit lichtem Wald bedeckt war, weidete. Die Klimaveränderungen zu Beginn des Pleistozäns, vor etwa zwei Millionen Jahren, trugen auch zum Aussterben des letzten im slowenischen Gebiet lebenden Mastodons bei.
Der Zahn des Mastodons kann heute in den Ausstellungsräumen des Naturkundemuseums Sloweniens besichtigt werden. Die Briefmarke zaubert eine erweiterte Realität (AR – Augmented Reality) herbei, wo man mit der Applikation HP Reveal mit Motiverkennung auf dem Mobilgerät ein Röntgenvideo des Querschnitts des Zahns des Mastodons beobachten kann.

RASTLINSTVO ZDRAVILNE RASTLINE
Navadni rman (Achillea millefolium L.)Navadni rman je gotovo ena naših najbolj znanih in najbolj razširjenih rastlin, ki ima zdravilne učinkovine, tudi v obliki eteričnih olj. Z njim naj bi celil krvaveče rane svojih bojevnikov že starogrški vojskovodja Ahil, po katerem je rman tudi dobil znanstveno ime Achillea. Navadni rman je pravzaprav kompleks več med seboj podobnih vrst, ki se le malo razlikujejo in jih največkrat vrednotimo kot podvrste. Sicer pa je to trajnica iz družine košarnic, z drobnimi belimi socvetji (koški) v pakobulastem socvetju. Listi so ozko pernato deljeni, dlakavi; cela rastlina prijetno diši. Rman je rastlina srednje vlažnih do polsuhih travnikov in uspeva po celi Sloveniji. Rman je uporabna rastlina tudi v okrasne namene, saj so vzgojili kultivarje, ki so rožnate, rdeče in celo oranžne barve. Na vrtu pa naj bi rman s svojim vonjem celo odganjal škodljive žuželke.
Žajbelj (Salvia officinalis L.)Iz rimskih časov izvira rek: »Kako je lahko umrl človek, ki mu na vrtu raste žajbelj?« ki priča o tradicionalni rabi žajblja v zdravilne namene. O njem je pisal že Teofrast v antični Grčiji. Danes vemo, da so aktivne snovi eterična olja, med njimi tudi tujon, ki pa lahko povzroča odvisnost in je njegovo redno uživanje škodljivo. Sicer pa dandanes žajbelj največkrat uporabljamo za vneto ustno votlino in grlo, uporaben pa je tudi v kulinariki kot dišava oziroma začimba, npr. italijanska jed špageti z maslom, na katerem so popečeni listi žajblja. Žajbelj je sredozemski grmiček iz družine ustnatic, z značilnimi, sivozelenimi listi, poraslimi z laski. Na kamnitih pašnikih Kvarnerja je prevladujoča rastlina, v Sloveniji pa so njegova naravna rastišča redka. Cvetovi so modrovijoličasti in ponekod iz njih pripravljajo sladek sirup, ki se razredči z vodo. Navsezadnje pa je žajbelj tudi imenitna okrasna rastlina, ki tudi na vrtovih na »kontinentu« pričara morske podobe in vonjave.Urad predsednika Republike Slovenije
Navadni pljučnik (Pulmonaria officinalis L.)Pljučnik je dobil svoje ime zaradi njegove uporabe v ljudskem zdravilstvu; zdravil oziroma lajšal naj bi pljučne bolezni. V resnici še danes uporabljajo njegove liste v pripravkih za pomirjanje kašlja. Pljučnik sodi v družino srhkolistnic, ki jih prepoznamo tudi po srhkodlakavih listih, poraslih s togimi mrtvimi laski, ki dajejo oster otip. Je trajnica s svetlo pikastimi listi, po čemer ga ne moremo zgrešiti v naravi niti takrat, kadar ne cveti. Cvetovi so najprej rdeči, kasneje pa spremenijo barvo v modrovijoličasto. Po oploditvi se v cvetu namreč spremeni pH reakcija od kisle v bazično, kar se odraža v barvi kot na lakmusovem papirju. Navadni pljučnik je v Sloveniji pogosta rastlina gozdne podrasti, predvsem bukovih gozdov, uspeva pa tudi na gozdnih robovih in zasenčenih jasah. Ima precej sorodnikov, ki jih včasih težko ločimo med seboj. Oprašujejo ga žuželke, plodiče pa raznašajo mravlje.

Common yarrow (Achillea millefolium)Common yarrow is undoubtedly one of our best-known and most widespread plants to contain active ingredients with medicinal effects, including in the form of essential oils. The Ancient Greek hero Achilles is said to have used it to heal the bleeding wounds of his warriors, hence its scientific name Achillea. The name common yarrow is actually applied to a group of several similar species with only minor differences, so that they are most often considered subspecies. It is a perennial of the Asteraceae family, with tiny white inflorescences borne in large flat-topped clusters. Its feathery, hairy leaves are divided into narrow segments. The whole plant has a pleasant smell. Yarrow is found in mesic to semi-dry meadows and grows throughout Slovenia. Yarrow is also used for ornamental purposes, since cultivars are grown with pink, red and even orange flowers. In a garden, the smell of yarrow is said to keep harmful insects away.
Sage (Salvia officinalis)The Ancient Roman saying "Why should a man die while sage grows in his garden?" may be considered evidence of the traditional use of sage for medicinal purposes. This is also described by the Ancient Greek philosopher Theophrastus. Today we know that the active substances in sage are essential oils, including thujone, which can cause dependence and is harmful if consumed regularly. These days sage is most commonly used to treat inflammations of the mouth and throat. It is also used in cooking as a seasoning, for example in the Italian dish consisting of spaghetti with butter and toasted sage leaves. Sage is a Mediterranean shrub of the Lamiaceae family with characteristic hair-covered grey-green leaves. It is the predominant plant in the rocky pastures above the Kvarner Gulf but is rarely found in the wild in Slovenia. Its flowers are blue to purple in colour and in some areas are used to make a sweet syrup that is diluted in water. Sage is also an excellent ornamental plant that evokes the sights and smells of the coast even in inland gardens.
Lungwort (Pulmonaria officinalis)Lungwort gained its name from its use in folk medicine, where it was believed to cure or alleviate diseases of the lungs. Its leaves are in fact still used today in preparations for the treatment of coughs. Lungwort belongs to the Boraginaceae family, identifiable by their bristly leaves covered with stiff dead hairs that make them sharp to the touch. It is a perennial with white-spotted leaves, making it easy to identify in the wild even when it is not in flower. Its flowers are initially red but later change colour to blue or purple. Following fertilisation, the pH of the flower changes from acidic to alkaline, which is reflected in a change of colour just like in litmus paper. Lungwort is commonly found in forest undergrowth in Slovenia, particularly in beech forests. It also thrives on the edges of forests and in shady clearings. It has a number of close relatives that are sometimes difficult to distinguish from each other. It is pollinated by insects and its seeds are disseminated by ants.
Gemeine Schafgarbe (Achillea millefolium L.)Die Gemeine oder Gewöhnliche Schafgarbe ist sicherlich eine der bekanntesten und am weitesten verbreiteten Pflanzen in Slowenien, die eine Heilwirkung hat, auch in Form von ätherischen Ölen. Mit der Schafgarbe soll bereits der Heerführer Achilleus im antiken Griechenland die blutenden Wunden seiner Kämpfer geheilt haben. Nach ihm erhielt die Schafgarbe auch ihren wissenschaftlichen Namen Achillea. Die Gemeine Schafgarbe ist eigentlich ein Komplex aus mehreren ähnlichen Arten, die sich untereinander nur wenig unterscheiden und oft als Unterarten bzw. Kleinarten eingeordnet werden. Das Staudengewächs kommt aus der Familie der Korbblütler mit feinen weißen (körbchenartigen) Teilblütenständen, die in einem doppelrispigen Gesamtblütenstand vereint sind. Die Blätter sind schmal federteilig und behaart. Die Pflanze hat einen angenehmen Duft. Die Schafgarbe gedeiht auf mittelfeuchten bis halbtrockenen Wiesen und ist in ganz Slowenien verbreitet. Sie ist eine Nutzpflanze mit Ziereffekt, da auch eine Kulturpflanzensorte mit rosa-, rot- und sogar orangefarbenen Blüten gezüchtet worden ist. Im Garten soll die Schafgarbe mit ihrem Duft sogar schädliche Insekten fernhalten.
Echter Salbei (Salvia officinalis L.)Aus Zeiten der Römer stammt das Sprichwort: „Wie kann ein Mensch sterben, in dessen Garten Salbei wächst“ und zeugt von der traditionellen Nutzung des Salbeis zu Heilzwecken. Über Salbei schrieb schon Theophrastos von Eresos im antiken Griechenland. Heute weiß man, dass die aktiven Substanzen ätherische Öle sind, darunter auch Thujon, das jedoch abhängig machen kann und dessen regelmäßige Einnahme gesundheitsschädigend ist. Salbei wird heute jedoch am häufigsten bei Mundhöhlen- und Halsentzündungen verwendet, ebenso in der Küche als Duft- und Gewürzpflanze, z. B. bei dem italienischen Gericht Spaghetti mit Salbei-Butter. Salbei ist ein Halbstrauch aus dem Mittelmeerraum aus der Familie der Lippenblütler mit den typischen graugrünen behaarten Blättern. Auf den Steinweiden in der Kvarner-Region ist er die dominierende Pflanze, während Naturstandorte in Slowenien selten sind. Die Blüten haben eine blauviolette Farbe und mancherorts wird aus ihnen ein süßer Sirup zubereitet, der mit Wasser verdünnt wird. Der Salbei ist letztendlich auch eine edle Zierpflanze, die auch in den Gärten des „Kontinents“ einen Hauch und Düfte des Meeres herbeizaubert.

Mountain arnica (Arnica montana)
The alcoholic tincture of arnica (usually arnica flowers soaked in brandy) was once an essential part of every home pharmacy and used to treat wounds, particularly burns. Arnica is thus without a doubt one of the best known medicinal plants for external use; in fact, its usefulness is even broader, since it is also used in homoeopathic remedies. But be careful! Even a slightly higher dose can be harmful, since it contains helenalin, which has a toxic effect on the digestive organs. Arnica is a member of the Asteraceae family with a deep-rooted, erect stem, downy opposite leaves and flowers of an intense yellow colour that are commonly picked for medicinal purposes. In Slovenia arnica is protected by the Decree on protected wild plant species, although it falls into a category where "removal from the wild and the collection of above-ground parts, with the exception of seeds and fruits, are permitted for personal use". Arnica is an acidophilic plant and therefore only thrives in acidic soils (on silicates, slate and other acidic rock types). It is relatively rare in Slovenia, where limestone (karst) terrain predominates. Its largest habitats are in the Karavanke and Pohorje mountains but it also grows in lowland areas, though only in moderately cultivated unfertilised meadows, which are increasingly rare.

Geflecktes Lungenkraut (Pulmonaria officinalis L.)Das Gefleckte Lungenkraut, auch als Echtes Lungenkraut bekannt, erhielt seinen Namen aufgrund seiner Nutzung in der Volksheilkunde, denn es soll Lungenkrankheiten heilen bzw. lindern. Noch heute werden seine Blätter in Präparaten zur Hustenlinderung verwendet. Das Gefleckte Lungenkraut gehört zur Familie der Raublattgewächse, die mit steifen toten Borstenhärchen bewachsen sind, sodass sich die Blattoberfläche rau anfühlt. Es ist ein Staudengewächs mit hellen punktartig gefleckten Blättern, dank derer man die Pflanze in der Natur nur schwer verfehlen kann, auch wenn sie nicht in Blüte steht. Die Blüten sind zuerst rot und ändern später die Farbe in ein blaues Violett. Nach der Bestäubung ändert sich in der Blüte nämlich die pH-Reaktion von Säure auf Base, was sowohl in der Farbe als auch auf dem Lackmuspapier zu sehen ist. Das Gefleckte Lungenkraut kommt in Slowenien häufig im Unterholz, vorwiegend in Buchenwäldern, vor, es gedeiht aber auch an Waldrändern und auf schattigen Lichtungen. Es hat viele verwandte Pflanzenarten, die manchmal jedoch schlecht zu unterscheiden sind. Es wird von Insekten bestäubt, während die kleinen Früchte von Ameisen verbreitet werden.
Echte Arnika (Arnica montana L.)Einst war die alkoholische Arnika-Tinktur (gewöhnlich Arnikablüten in Schnaps getränkt) Bestandteil jeder Hausapotheke als Arznei gegen Wunden, insbesondere Verbrennungen. Arnika ist sicherlich eine der bekanntesten Heilpflanzen für die äußere Anwendung, doch es gibt noch mehr Anwendungsbereiche, da Arnika auch in homöopathischen Präparaten verwendet wird! Doch Vorsicht ist angebracht. Die Einnahme von Arnika in etwas höheren Dosen ist gesundheitsschädlich, da sie Helenalin enthält, das in den Verdauungsorganen wie Gift wirkt. Arnika ist ein Korbblütler mit tiefem Wurzelstock, aufrechtem Stängel, gegenständigen Laubblättern und einem intensiv gelbem Blütenstand – körbchenförmige Blüten, die gewöhnlich zu medizinischen Zwecken gesammelt werden. In Slowenien ist die Arnika mit der Verordnung über den Schutz wildwachsender Pflanzenarten geschützt, doch gehört sie in die Kategorie, in der eine „Entnahme aus der Natur und das Sammeln der überirdischen Pflanzenteile, außer Samen und Früchten, für persönliche Zwecke“ erlaubt ist. Arnika ist eine säureliebende Pflanze und gedeiht daher nur in versauerten Böden (in Silikat- und Schieferböden sowie in anderen Gesteinen mit saurer Reaktion), daher kommt die Pflanze im vorwiegend von Kalkstein geprägten Slowenien (in der Karstregion) relativ selten vor. Die größten Vorkommen sind in den Karawanken und auf dem Pohorje-Gebirge, sie gedeiht aber auch in den Ebenen, auf nicht gedüngten mäßigen Mähwiesen, die jedoch immer seltener werden.

Arnika (Arnica montana L.)
Nekoč je bila alkoholna tinktura (običajno cvetovi arnike, namočeni v žganju) sestavni del vsake domače lekarne kot zdravilo za rane, posebej še opekline. Arnika je tako gotovo ena najbolj znanih zdravilnih rastlin za zunanjo uporabo; njena uporabnost pa je širša, saj se uporablja tudi v homeopatskih pripravkih. Vendar pozor! Njeno uživanje v le malo večjih odmerkih je škodljivo, saj vsebuje helenalin, ki deluje kot strup v prebavnih organih. Arnika je košarnica z globoko koreniko, pokončnim steblom, z nasprotnimi listi in intenzivno rumenimi socvetji – koški, ki jih običajno nabirajo v zdravilne namene. V Sloveniji je arnika zavarovana z Uredbo o zavarovanih prosto živečih rastlinskih vrstah, vendar spada v kategorijo, pri kateri je dovoljen »odvzem iz narave in zbiranje nadzemnih delov, razen semen in plodov, za osebne namene«. Arnika je kisloljubna rastlina, zato uspeva le na zakisanih tleh (na silikatih, skrilavcih in drugih kamninah s kislo reakcijo), zato je v pretežno apnenčasti (kraški) Sloveniji razmeroma redka. Njena največja nahajališča so v Karavankah in na Pohorju, uspeva pa tudi v nižinah, vendar na zmerno gojenih negnojenih travnikih, ki pa so vedno redkejši.

Design for a Better Life
World Design Day (WDD) is an opportunity to recognize the value of design and its capacity for change in the world – and to celebrate the birthday of ico-D (International Council of Design).
The goal of WDD is to challenge designers to reflect deeply on the well-being of people within their local environments, and to find innovative solutions to local needs by using design as a vehicle to honour diversity, transcend borders, and improve quality of life.
Every year, on 27 April, designers worldwide are invited to gather, innovate, and live out a moment of design by organising public events and initiatives, so that by sharing examples of design and actively participating in their local community, they can show how design is used to make life better. This year marks 55 years since the first World Deign Day, a milestone that we have decided to honour with the first Slovene postage stamp dedicated to the event.

Design für ein besseres Leben
Der Welttag des Grafikdesigns (World Design Day – WDD) ist eine gute Gelegenheit zur Anerkennung des Grafikdesigns und dessen bedeutender Rolle bei der Veränderung der Welt zum Besseren und auch zum Feiern des Jubiläums des Verbandes ico-D (International Council of Design / Internationaler Verband des Grafikdesigns).
Das Ziel des Welttags des Grafikdesigns ist es, Grafiker zu tieferen Gedanken über die Koexistenz anzuregen, sich der Bedeutung ihrer Rolle bewusst zu sein und mithilfe des Designs als Schlüsselmedium innovative Lösungen zur Berücksichtigung der Vielfältigkeit, der Überschreitung von Grenzen und zur Verbesserung der Lebensqualität in ihrem Umfeld zu finden.
Alljährlich, am 27. April, ist der Welttag des Grafikdesigns, wenn Grafiker aus aller Welt mit Innovationen, organisierten öffentlichen Veranstaltungen oder anderen Initiativen dazu aufgefordert werden, mit ihren Grafikbeispielen und ihrem Engagement das Leben in ihrer lokalen Gemeinde zum Besseren zu verändern. In diesem Jahr sind 55 Jahre seit dem ersten Welttag des Grafikdesigns vergangen. Dieses Jubiläum werden wir mit der ersten slowenischen Briefmarke, die diesem Ereignis gewidmet ist, feiern.

Oblikovanje za boljše življenje
Svetovni dan oblikovanja je priložnost za priznanje oblikovanja in njegove pomembne vloge pri »spreminjanju sveta« na bolje kot tudi praznovanje združenja ico-D (International Council of Design / Mednarodno združenje za oblikovanje).
Cilj svetovnega dneva oblikovanja (WDD) je spodbuditi oblikovalce k poglobljenemu razmišljanju o sobivanju, da se zavedo pomembnosti svoje vloge in s pomočjo oblikovanja kot glavnega vzvoda poiščejo inovativne rešitve za spoštovanje raznolikosti, preseganje meja in izboljšanje kakovosti življenja v svojem okolju.
Vsako leto 27. aprila je svetovni dan oblikovanja, ko so oblikovalci po vsem svetu vabljeni k praznovanju z inovacijami, z organiziranjem javnih prireditev ali drugih pobud, da z oblikovalskimi primeri in aktivnim delovanjem v svoji lokalni skupnosti spreminjajo življenje na bolje. Letos mineva petinpetdeset let od prvega svetovnega dneva oblikovanja, ki ga bomo počastili s prvo slovensko znamko.

Culture and Tourism in the EDEN Network
The EDEN (European Destinations of Excellence) first began to be developed in the European Union in 2007. The purpose of the network is to link together all those places and environments in Europe that consistently harmonise their tourism activities with sustainable environmental, cultural and social elements and are not overburdened by excessive tourism. To this end, finalists and winning destinations are selected in individual European countries every two years. A specific theme is chosen each time. Slovenia has been participating very successfully in this competition and the development of the network since 2008. We should also mention that Slovenia is the only country in Europe to present its winning destinations on postage stamps.
The theme of the competition in 2017 was "Culture and Tourism" – in other words the emphasis was on one of the fundamental driving forces in tourism around the world, since culture/cultural heritage and gastronomy/cuisine are among the leading reasons why people travel. The winning EDEN destination in Slovenia was Koper, which excellently combines a diverse range of cultural content, activities and institutions with high-quality tourism services and facilities. The other finalists in this edition of the competition were Slovenske Konjice, the Karst region, Radovljica and Ptuj. The solemn proclamation of the winning destinations takes place in Brussels. The winning destinations and finalists from all previous editions in Slovenia also form connections with each other, above all in terms of joint promotion and comparing experiences.

Kultur und Tourismus im EDEN-Netzwerk
Im Jahr 2007 begann in der Europäischen Union die Entstehung des Netzwerks EDEN – European Destinations of Excellency (Herausragende europäische Reiseziele), dessen Ziel es ist, all jene Orte und Regionen in Europa zu verbinden, die ihr Tourismusangebot konsequent im Einklang mit den nachhaltigen Umwelt-, Kultur- und Gesellschaftsinhalten gestalten und nicht mit einem übermäßigem Tourismusbesuch überlastet sind. Zu diesem Zweck findet in den einzelnen europäischen Ländern alle zwei Jahre die Auswahl der Finalisten und Siegerdestinationen zu einem bestimmten Thema statt. Slowenien nimmt an dem Wettbewerb und der Gestaltung des Netzwerkes schon seit 2008 teil. Erwähnenswert ist die Tatsache, dass Slowenien das einzige Land in Europa ist, das seine Siegerdestinationen auf Briefmarken darstellt.
Im Jahr 2017 war das Thema des Wettbewerbs „Kulturtourismus“, also lag der Schwerpunkt auf einem der grundlegenden Motive der Bemühungen im Tourismus in der Welt, sind doch die Kultur mit dem Kulturerbe und die Gastronomie mit der Kulinarik führende Motive der reisenden Menschheit. Die EDEN-Siegerdestination in Slowenien war Koper, das eine Palette aus verschiedenen kulturellen Inhalten, Tätigkeiten und Einrichtungen hervorragend in einem hochwertigen Tourismusangebot vereint. Neben der Siegerdestination Koper konnten sich noch Slovenske Konjice, der Karst, Radovljica und Ptuj unter die Finalisten einreihen. Die feierliche Verkündung der Siegerdestinationen findet in Brüssel statt. Die Siegerdestinationen und Finalisten aller bisherigen Wettbewerbe in Slowenien verbinden sich auch miteinander, vor allem in den Bereichen der gemeinsamen Vermarktung und des Erfahrungsaustausches.

Kultura in turizem v turistični mreži EDEN
Leta 2007 se je v Evropski uniji začela oblikovati mreža EDEN – European Destinations of Excellency (Evropske destinacije odličnosti), katere namen je povezati vse tiste kraje in okolja v Evropi, ki svoja turistična prizadevanja dosledno usklajujejo z vzdržnimi (trajnostnimi) okoljskimi, kulturnimi in družbenimi vsebinami ter niso preobremenjena s čezmernim turističnim obiskom. V ta namen potekajo v posameznih evropskih državah vsaki dve leti izbori za finalistke in zmagovalne destinacije, vedno na določeno tematiko. Slovenija zelo uspešno sodeluje v tem tekmovanju in oblikovanju mreže od leta 2008. Na tem mestu naj omenimo, da je Slovenija edina država v Evropi, ki svoje zmagovalne destinacije predstavlja na znamkah.
Leta 2017 je bila tematika tekmovanja ˝Kultura in turizem˝ – torej poudarek na enem temeljnih motivov siceršnjega turističnega prizadevanja v svetu, saj sta kultura s kulturno dediščino in gastronomija s kulinariko vodilna motiva potujočega človeštva. Zmagovalna EDEN-destinacija v Sloveniji je bil Koper, ki odlično združuje paleto različnih kulturnih vsebin, dejavnosti in ustanov v kakovostno turistično ponudbo. Poleg zmagovalnega Kopra so se med finalistke tekmovanja uvrstile še Slovenske Konjice, Kras, Radovljica in Ptuj. Svečana razglasitev zmagovalnih destinacij poteka v Bruslju. Zmagovalne destinacije in finalistke vseh dosedanjih tekmovanj v Sloveniji se tudi medsebojno povezujejo, predvsem na področjih skupne promocije in izmenjave izkušenj.

Once again all the special stamps issued in 2017 have been collected together on a stock card. As is now customary, the year set will not include any regular stamps, booklets, charity stamps or sheetlets.

Izšlo bo maja 2018
25. maja, ko bo izšel že tretji letošnji sklop slovenskih znamk, nadaljujemo že začete serije, prav tako pa prinaša majski izid tudi nekaj novosti.
Tematika tokratne serije znamke Europa so mostovi: dve znamki z nominalama 1,15 EUR in 1,26 bosta tudi tokrat izšli v dveh malih polah z osmimi znamkami in vinjeto.
V seriji Slovenske ladje predstavljamo ladjo Ljubljana. Kot vse znamke te serije bo tudi tokratna znamka izšla v bloku, njena nominala pa bo 1,15 EUR.
V maju bo naenkrat izšla serija petih znamk na temo ljudskega praznoverja in magije. Vsaka znamka bo izdana v mali poli z 10 znamkami, simbolno pa bodo prikazovale čarovnice, črno mačko, zaščito novorojenca, prerokovanje iz kavne usedline in kart ter Ivanove venčke. Nominale znamk bodo 0,40 EUR, 0,48 EUR, 0,58 EUR, 0,78 EUR in 1,00 EUR.
Na znamkah pa bomo obeležili tudi dve pomembni obletnici: mineva 110 let od prvega zajetja mineralne vode Donat Mg ter 250 let od odkritja človeške ribice. Vsako od naštetih obletnic bomo obeležili z znamko v poli s 25 znamkami, njuni nominali pa bosta 0,48 EUR in 1,77 EUR.
Majski izid prinaša tudi prvo razglednično dopisnico v tem letu. Ta bo posvečena 50. obletnici nastanka slike Marija s svetniki, katere avtor je slikar Vittore Carpaccio.
Opomba:Predstavljeni so nekateri osnutki znamk, pri katerih še lahko pride do sprememb.
Neuausgaben im Mai 2018
Am 25. Mai, bei der dritten Ausgabe slowenischer Briefmarken, werden angefangene Briefmarkenreihen fortgesetzt, ebenso gibt es im Mai auch einige Neuheiten.
Das diesjährige Thema der Briefmarken Europa sind Brücken. Auch diesmal erscheinen beide Briefmarken mit den Nennwerten 1,15 EUR und 1,26 EUR in zwei Kleinbögen zu je acht Briefmarken und mit Vignette.
In der Reihe Slowenische Schiffe wird das Schiff Ljubljana vorgestellt. Wie alle Briefmarken der Reihe wird auch diese Marke im Block und mit einem Nennwert von 1,15 € erscheinen.
Im Mai wird die Fünf-Marken-Reihe Volksaberglaube und Magie erscheinen. Jede Briefmarke erscheint im Kleinbogen zu je 10 Marken mit symbolischen Abbildungen von Hexen, einer schwarzen Katze, eines Schutzzaubers für ein Neugeborenes, von Wahrsagungen aus Kaffeesatz und Karten sowie Johanneskränzen. Die Nennwerte dieser Briefmarken liegen bei 0,40 €, 0,48 €, 0,58 €, 0,78 € und 1,00 €.
Mit Briefmarken feiern wir auch zwei wichtige Jahrestage. 110 Jahre sind seit der Entnahme des Mineralwassers Donat Mg und 250 Jahre seit der Entdeckung des Grottenolms vergangen. Die beiden Jahrestage werden mit einer Briefmarke im Bogen zu je 25 Marken und mit einem Nennwert von 0,48 € und 1,77 € begangen.
Die Maiausgabe enthält auch die erste Bildpostkarte in diesem Jahr. Diese ist dem 50. Jahrestag der Entstehung des Gemäldes Maria mit Heiligen gewidmet, das vom Maler Vittore Carpaccio geschaffen wurde.

Coming in May 2018
On 25 May, which sees the release of the third set of Slovene postage stamps, we will continue our existing series while also introducing some new stamps.
Bridges are the latest theme of the stamps in the Europa series. Once again two stamps will be issued in two sheetlets of eight stamps and a vignette. The face values will be EUR 1.15 and EUR 1.26.
The latest stamp in the Slovene Ships series will feature the bulk carrier Ljubljana. Like all the stamps in this series, the stamp will be issued in a miniature sheet and will have a face value of €1.15.
A series of five stamps on the theme of folk superstitions and magic is due out in May. Each stamp will be issued in a sheetlet of ten stamps. The series will symbolically depict: witches, the black cat, the protection of newborn babies, fortune-telling using coffee grounds and cards, and Advent wreaths. The face values of these stamps will be €0.40, €0.48, €0.58, €0.78, and €1.00.
Stamps will also be issued to mark two important anniversaries: 110 years since Donat Mg mineral water was first captured and 250 years since the discovery of the olm or "human fish" Proteus anguinus. Each of these anniversaries will be marked by a stamp issued in sheets of 25 with face values of €0.48 and €1.77.
The May issue also brings this year's first picture postcard. This will be dedicated to the 500th anniversary of the painting Enthroned Madonna with Child and Saints by Vittore Carpaccio.
