With perhaps the exception of Year 7, this signifies the halfway point of the school year for all students. In particular it signifies the end of the Preliminary course for senior students, who next term will begin the HSC course in all subjects. No doubt many senior students will be considering this fact and will be mentally preparing for a big effort in the second semester. Year 10 students should also be aware that their senior studies will begin in only two more terms. The compressed curriculum model brings many advantages for senior students. However one of the challenges is that Year 10 students need to ensure that they are immediately ready for senior studies once Term 4 comes around. The time to think about that is now. In light of this it is timely to articulate my expectations for this week to our school community. This week is a busy and important week as usual at Billabong High School. On Tuesday we have a transition day where primary students and parents will visit BHS to gain an impression of our value as a high school. On Friday we will conduct an ANZAC PRINCIPAL Day assembly. We are deliberately conducting this important event ahead of ANZAC Day instead of after ANZAC Day, so that we may raise awareness amongst our students and community, and hope that many of our students have a better understanding of what this day means to our nation. Staff and students from Billabong High School will coordinate their attendance at local events so that we may support and participate in as many ANZAC events as possible. My expectations are that the teaching and learning never stops at BHS. Parents and students can expect that valuable learning is taking place right up until the last lesson of each term. Students and staff have designated time during the holidays to refresh and prepare for another term ahead. When we are at school, our job is to teach, and a student’s job is to learn. I see every minute of class time as being valuable, and I trust that our staff and students value each minute as much as I do. On a personal note, this week marks the end of my first term at Billabong High School. It has been a very busy time as I worked hard to take in as much information about the school community as possible. Davidson Shield Cricket Team

best figures of 7 overs, 2 maidens and two wickets for 13 runs. The boys managed to bowl Kooringal out off 31 overs for 111 runs, a fantastic effort.

The batting looked achievable on paper with a run rate of only just over 3 runs per over needed to win the game. One of our openers, Jake Hicks found the early bowling tough and was eventually dismissed with the score on 4 runs. A short partnership between Lewis Bowen and Tom Heriot moved the score onto 21 before Tom was out LBW on 5. Damian Wardius and Lewis moved the score on to 40 before Lewis was caught out for 25 (second top score). Nathan Wenke and Damian put on a quick partnership of 14 before Damian skyed a ball and was caught out for 11. This bought Oskar Willis to the crease to face a spin attack where he was in a 7 run partnership but unfortunately was out LBW without scoring. In came Nick Murray and he and Nathan put on a quick 14 run partnership before Nathan was out to a great catch for 16. Braeden Pantling came in and scored a good 7 runs and his replacement was Michael Driscoll. Nick and Michael remained I and reached the target of 112 with three overs to spare with some exciting controlled hitting (lots of air swings as well). Nick was not out on 26 (highest score) and Michael not out 13.

A fantastic effort by all players and we now move onto round 3 and our opponent is not known at his stage.

I have worked with staff, students and parents to assess the school’s position and to plan for continued future improvement. I am happy with what we have together achieved this term, and I look forward to what we will achieve together in the future. I thank you all for your support, and wish staff, students and parents a safe and restful holiday break.

Davidson Shield CHS Cricket Knockout - Billabong v Kooringal High School On Friday April 1 Billabong hosted Kooringal High School in round 2 of the Davidson Shield CHS Knockout Competition. Our team was led by Damian Wardius and he proved himself to be a very capable leader. Kooringal won the toss and chose to bat first. They were reported to have some very capable batsman so our bowlers need to stick to our game plan and make them play at each ball and to bowl no short balls to them. As a result we had six bowlers take wickets, Oscar Willis, Michael Driscoll, Damian Wardius and Nathan Wenke taking 2 wickets each, while Fletcher Macreadie took one wicket. Lewis Bowen bowled three tight overs. Oscar ended with the

Wonga Wetlands Excursion On Tuesday March 22 Kyle, Aidyn, Bodhi, Hayden, Bradley, Zac, Asha, Scott, Paul, Noel, Jason, Mrs Morgan, Mr Abood, Mrs Murdoch, went to Albury City’s Wonga Wetlands. We looked at a PowerPoint about the history of Wonga Wetlands, followed by morning tea with Mrs Murdoch’s chocolate slice.

We did some exploring down the track where we caught some water bugs. We identified them so that we could find out about the quality of the water.

We did a little bit of bird watching from a hide and we used the computers with microscopes to look at the water bugs and other interesting things such as cicadas.

Thank you Mrs Preston for cooking sausages for our lunch. John Hawkins was our teacher for the day and he told us lots of interesting facts about the wetland.

It was a great day out and we learnt a lot about the wetlands. By Bradley Merkel Year 9

Duke of Edinburgh AJ This Wednesday 24 students will undertake their bronze and silver level Practice Adventurous Journey. The group have completed two practice walks and have been busy organising their equipment and tent groups.

Riverina Sport Trials Congratulations to Nakita Singe and Alyce Parker who have been selected in the Riverina Open Girls Netball team. This team is widely regarded as one of the most difficult Riverina teams to be selected for, so this is a fine achievement for the girls.

The following boys will attend the Riverina Under 15 Boy’s Football Trials on Thursday 28 April at Urana Road Oval; Michael Driscoll, Mitch Thomas, Jonathan Male, Taylor Clark, Max Burkhalter, Oscar Willis, Harley Allen, Macauley Kohlhagen and Jack Driscoll. The boys will need to make their own way to the trials and information can be collected from Mr Mackinlay.

Well done to Philippa Bowler who attended the Senior Girl’s Hockey Trials last week, while not gaining selection Philippa made it to the last Possibles and Probables match.

Brodie Hall will attend Riverina Lawn Bowls Trials and Russell Rutter Rugby League.

Changes to Local High School Football A new format will be introduced in the local high school AFL Competition this season. The senior boy’s competition, now known as the Bill Taylor Cup, will be a one day event. Teams will play three 20 minute games and may progress to finals that day if successful. This will take place on Tuesday 3rd May (week two term two) on the two Xavier High School ovals. On the same day at Scots, the senior girls will be involved in a one day AFL Carnival using a similar format to the boys.

2016 Junior Basketball Nomination Day Nomination day is on Wednesday April 27 2016 at 4.00pm for children in Year 3-Year 9.

Registrations will be collected on the day with individual nominations . Juniors $25.00 and high school $30.00, game fees will be $2.50 and $2.00. Depending on numbers, teams will be sorted in grades for the competition to begin on Wednesday May 4.

Each team will have an interested parent to manage the team as well as perform bench duty and umpire if required. For more information call Brian Frana on 0418 547 784.

Australian Polocrosse National Championships

The local Polocrosse Club, Albury-Holbrook, is hosting the Australian National Championships on 18-24 April 2016 at the Albury Equestrian Centre. Billabong High School student Kasey Henry (Year 7) is a member of the NSW U12 Team (the only girl in the team). Come along and cheer on Kasey!

The Junior Football Competition has been expanded to include: Under 14 boys, under 15 girls and under 16 boys. Each of these teams will all play on the same day in a round robin competition during term two. Billabong will play Murray High, James Fallon, St Paul’s and Xavier in the final round. Two lots of games will be at Culcairn and two in Albury. Player nominations are now being taken for those interested in playing.

The under 15 boys will also be involved in the Swan Shield State Knockout and are drawn to play Murray High in the first round. As can be seen, many opportunities now exist for junior boys and girls in AFL.
