Senior Football Report Billabong’s senior football team played its first game in the ASSSFA Ross Henshaw Shield competition against Catholic College Wodonga at Culcairn Sportsground on Wednesday 2nd May.

The Billabong team, led by Dylan Hore and Joshua Jones, were competitive in the first half, due mainly to a super defensive effort by all players against a CCW team that played strong running football and boasted a forward line with several strong marking players. At half time, Billabong was 13 points down – still in the game but with a lot of work to do.

CCW kicked away in the second half, scoring eight goals in each of the next two quarters to record a decisive victory 21.13 (139) to 5.4 (34). The loss of co-captain Josh Jones just before half time, did not help Billabong’s cause, but the strong defensive effort of the first half, also depleted the energy of our players.

Strong performances from Dylan Hore, Josh Jones (until injured), Isaac Muller, Steven Bradshaw, Luke Carmen and Hamish Casey in a losing team were a highlight for Billabong and those players playing their first game of senior football received a valuable lesson about the standard of the AWSSFA competition.

State Lawn Bowls Knockout On Thursday Billabong defeated Griffith High in the third round of the State Lawn Bowls Knockout. It was another sound win 29—7. One more win and they will compete in the

State Final at Warrilla later this term. Congratulations to Cassidy McAliece, Rachel Hensel and Jeremy Finlayson and good luck for the finals.

Juniors Play Good Footy—Catholic College Too Strong The BHS Junior Footy Team played Catholic College Wodonga on Wednesday morning at the Culcairn Oval. It was a good day for footy and great to see a few parents there to support the boys. The CCW team were big and fast, but our team were hard at the ball and showed excellent spirit. The BHS combination were able to match them for two quarters, but the opposition were able to kick multiple goals in bursts and went on to win comfortably.

Final score: CCW (81) defeated BHS (22) Special thanks to Myall Hoffmann’s Dad, Ross, who was goal umpire and thanks also to Liam, Hamish, Lachlan and Myall for helping with boundary umpiring and water.

Best on ground: Our captain Matty Klemke played an outstanding game and provided inspirational leadership. Other fine players included: Alex Dougherty, Sam Murray, Harrison Macreadie, Damien Andrews and Nick Wright (inspiring determination and tackle technique).

Goals: Matty Klemke, Coby Ross and Keegan Jenkins.

Congratulations to the team on a fine effort.

Hayden Webb’s Golf Success Hayden Webb has had a very busy golf and travel schedule lately. He finished third in the Riverina stroke-play on Friday 16th March and followed this up by winning the Riverina match-play championships on Thursday 22nd March, by defeating Joel Sheilds (off 1) in the semi final 2up, then in the final Hayden defeated Lachlan Stewart (off 3) 6 and 5. As a result of this success, Hayden has been picked in the Riverina team to play at the state carnival being held at Koohindah Waters Golf Club in Wyong at the end of this term.

Continuing his busy schedule, Hayden over the 1st and 2nd of May, played in the State Schoolboys Individual Stroke-play at Wentworth Falls, Hayden was not at his best and finished in the middle of a very strong field. On the 3rd of May he played in the State Match-play at Blackheath, but lost in the first round to Harrison Endicott who was the winner of the stroke-play two days beforehand.

Hayden is also travelling to and playing on a weekly basis in a Melbourne pennant competition to further hone his skills competing at a higher level. We congratulate Hayden on his success and wish him all the best for the state carnival later this term.

Bushrangers Cup and Junior Girls Football Squads will be announced later this

week for the up-coming (18th May) Bushrangers Cup and Junior Girls Football teams, interested players should have placed their names outside the PE staffroom.

Aylssa’s Successful National Tennis Championships Alyssa Savill was a key member of the NSW all schools tennis team that dominated the recent National School Tennis Championships held in Toowoomba QLD. The team remained undefeated after playing all other state teams. More specific details of Alyssa achievements will be presented in next week’s Billabong Highlights.

Riverina Football Team Selections Congratulations to Matty Klemke and Sam Murray who have been chosen to play for Riverina in the CHS state carnival to be played in Wollongong during week five. The boys performed very well at the trials and deserved their selections, we wish them all the best.

Cross Country Hopefully this Wednesday’s weather will be dryer than last week’s for the running of the school cross country. Both the junior and senior race will take place during this Wednesday’s sport period.

Stewart House Day (11 May) The Department of Education and Communities’ official charity, Stewart House, provides support for children who are in need of a break from their everyday life. Each year 1,800 public school children in need come to Stewart House from many parts of NSW and the ACT. During their stay, they are given optometric, dental and medical treatment as well as emotional support. This is balanced with health and educational programs and out of school activities to boost their self-esteem and to promote a healthier lifestyle. This year, 11 May is Stewart House Day. We encourage you to make a donation to Stewart House to help support the great work that this charity provides. www.stewarthouse.org.au
