P R E S I D E N T ' S R E P O R TWell, it is almost the end of my first year in the role of BHA Presidentand what an interesting year it’s been! Despite lots of challenges anda very steep learning curve, we’ve made some good progress on anumber of fronts. There is still a lot to be done – but that’s theexciting part about this role.

Following on from the tremendous results of the Kookaburras inAthens last year, there was much anticipation and excitement at thestart of the 2005 season. It was great to see Australian Players –Dean Butler, Matthew Wells and Stephen Lambert – playing in ourBrisbane competition as often as their busy schedules allowed. Thestart of the season was also heralded by the laying of new turf on theState Hockey Centre No. 1 field.

Congratulations to all the Premiership-winning Teams and the Playersof the Finals (details are contained later in this Annual Report). Therewas a spread of premierships across a range of Clubs which wasgood to see. Also, congratulations to George Clutton from EasternSuburbs for winning the BHA Best and Fairest Medal for the secondyear running.

Throughout 2005, Brisbane fielded teams in all major Regional andState Championships – congratulations and thanks to allrepresentative players, coaches, managers, umpires and supportersfor your achievements. Our teams were successful in winning anumber of these Championships – Premier League;Veterans’ Over40’s State Championships and Coulter Shield; U/11 Coulter Shield;U/13 Coulter Shield and U/15 Coulter Shield.

Apart from the regular day-to-day activities needed to keep theAssociation running, there were a number of key decisions andhighlights from a Management perspective, including:

• Removal of all fees and charges for Minkey players; a significantreduction in the charges for U/9 players and a reduction in the feescharged for players who play in both the Junior and Seniorcompetitions All of these changes were designed to bolster thenumbers of players taking up and staying in the game;

• A reduction in the fees for U/17 players from 2004 transitioning intothe senior ranks in 2005. This initiative recognises the financialchallenges faced by players and their families as they transition outof High School into the workforce or further studies;

• Introduction of a 10-game (as well as the 5-game) reduced fees tocover temporary players.

• Establishment of a very positive working relationship with HockeyQueensland. Thanks to Ken, Garry and all the team at HockeyQueensland.

• Establishment and funding of the Southbank Institute Program thatprovided further developmental opportunities for ten BHA playerswho have represented Brisbane at Under Age tournaments but whohad been unsuccessful in securing a position with the QAS squad.The Program provided similar services to the QAS to enableathlete’s skills and fitness to improve to levels where they can stayin the game and be competitive in seeking opportunities in the AHLand U/21 teams.

• Development of the first draft of a Player-Development Road Mapshowing the many and varied pathways available to players of allstandards.

• Changing the approach to dual-registered players to enable them tonominate which centre they wished to represent for the variousState Championships.

• A Working Committee was successfully established to look at thelocation of Grass fixtures for next season and beyond.

• Extinguishment of BHA's guarantee of facilities (with Bank ofQueensland) previously granted in respect of the State HockeyCentre that was in place with the State Hockey Centre.

• Introduction of the three “J” Grades to provide further opportunitiesfor our junior players.

Whilst we are pleased with the progress made in these areas, it isalso acknowledged that there are areas for improvement for nextyear, including:

• Umpiring – especially the allocation of experienced umpires acrossall senior grades;

• Reduction in the number of late games that our players arerequired to play on Saturdays and Sundays.

• Continuing to foster a sense of a Brisbane Hockey community –developing a united partnership between BHA and all Clubs.

• Taking a longer-term strategic view of the Association and thedirections in which we need to head.

• Getting enough talented and dedicated people to put their hand upto take on roles on the BHA Board and its various subcommittees.

A season of hockey doesn’t just happen by itself – there’s always lotsof hard work required. So, I’d like to take this opportunity to saythanks to the following people for their contributions to Season 2005:

• Kim Rendell for the many hours of hard work that he has dedicatedto our Association. His excellent work with our website has placedit at the forefront of the hockey community and provided everyonewith an easily-accessible location to keep up to date.

• To Lex Barney and Kym Ireland for their efforts in all of thedevelopment areas throughout the year.

• Also, thanks to Susan Johnston for all of her hard work in ensuringall of our accounts were paid on time and the outstanding debtorsnow stand at one of the lowest figures in recent history.

• Norm Ludwig for his many hours of behind-the-scenes work inassisting Susan with the accounts.

• Rachelle Faulks our school-based Trainee for her hard work andassistance.

• To our Sponsors (through Queensland Hockey Promotions) –thanks for your generous contributions.

• To the BJHA Committee for their excellent work in providing playingopportunities for all of our Juniors.

• The Umpires who regularly turned up to provide independentadjudication.

• The Tech Bench officials for the many thankless hours they spenthelping to keep the games running smoothly and on time.

• The First Aid officials who were always there to assist whenrequired.

• All BHA Coaches and Managers – for the investment of time andexpertise that you put into developing our representative teams andplayers.

• Greg Swann, June Grant, Barry Bolton and all of the organisingcommittee for hosting a very successful U/13 Boys StateChampionships at the State Hockey Centre.

• The Management Committees and Boards of all Clubs (Seniorsand Juniors) for your help and support throughout the year.

• To the Club Delegates (to both the Senior and Junior Delegates’bodies) for attending the many meetings and for providinginvaluable feedback and input into the running of our Association.

• And last, but by no means least – to my fellow Board members forthe many hours of personal time that you have given up to assistwith the running of the game for all Brisbane players. Thank youall.

Finally, regardless of our backgrounds and Club allegiances, Iencourage everyone to work together as a united Brisbane hockeycommunity and in so doing we demonstrate the importance of helpingeach other out for the advancement of our sport. There are manysignificant opportunities and challenges laying ahead for ourAssociation and we need to focus on taking these opportunities andworking together for the advancement of our sport.

I look forward to continuing the journey with you in 2006.

With best regards

Colin Murphy BHA President

G E N E R A L S E C R E T A R Y ' S R E P O R TTo be presented at the Seventy Third Annual General Meeting ofBrisbane Hockey Association Inc to be held at Sports House, Milton,on Monday 5th December 2005.

Cr. Newman, Mr. Murphy, Ladies and Gentlemen,

I have pleasure in presenting the Annual Report for the 2005 Season.

The 2005 Season was once again a success for your Association.This is only made possible through the dedicated voluntary work ofthe BHA President and Board, the many club officials and delegates,and the cooperation of players, coaches and managers.

FIXTURESThe 2005 Season of Fixtures got under way earlier than in previousyears due in the main to the many interruptions that were scheduledfor the State Hockey Centre (SHC). The Director of Competitions,Russell Marsden, did an excellent job of creating the fixture drawsaround these. The season's dates have been summarised in thefollowing table:

Casualties of the tight season were the Memorial Cup and thePresident's Trophy Finals, normally played as separate matches.Instead these were awarded to the leading team in each divisionfollowing the completion of the first complete round in the case of theMemorial Cup and following the completion of the second completeround in the case of the President's Trophy. A list of the winnersappears later in these reports.

As in 2004 your Association did not schedule fixtures on Friday nightsas per the decisions of the General Committee (the Clubs). TheBrisbane Hockey League (BHL) matches were scheduled as follows.BHL1 and BHL2 were played on Saturdays only while BHL3, BHL4and BHL5 were played predominantly on Sundays with overflow toSaturdays, i.e. five divisions playing on the artificial surfaces of theSHC and the Burringbar Park Facility.

The Classic Hockey League (CHL) divisions were played entirely onthe grass fields of Shaw Park with the exception of only thePreliminary and Grand Finals which were played on the SHC grassfields. All Veterans (VHL) matches were once again played onTuesday nights, the general consensus appears to be in favour of re-taining all Veterans matches on the one night at the one venue.

REPRESENTATIVEIt was always going to be difficult for our representative teams toequal the previous year's performances in winning almost all of theState Championships however this is not the only criteria upon whichthese teams should be judged. All of this year's teams can becredited with solid performances. The players of each team alongwith the coaches, managers and the final results are listed in asection later in these reports.

COMMITTEESThe Judiciary Committee was called upon on 13 occasions while theAppeals Committee was called upon just the once. I thank themembers of each of these committees as well as those whovolunteered to stand in from time to time. The full time members ofthese committees are listed with the Officials.

A Grounds Committee was not formed for 2005. The Association wasrequired to liaise directly with ShawSportz Ltd regarding all matterspertaining to the grass fields used at Shaw Park.

INTERNETThe Internet once again fulfilled its role as the predominantcommunications medium of BHA. Since its introduction in 2000 therehas been a steady decline in the costs to your Association for postageand telephone services.

All meeting notices, forms, invoices, important and topical informationamongst other things are now emailed to clubs. The BHA Website isnow the focus for all matters related to fixtures, player, coach andmanager nominations, important events, club contact listings, playersurvey and a myriad of other important information.

BHA BEST AND FAIREST MEDALThe 2005 BHA Best and Fairest Medal Presentation Dinner was heldon Monday 29th August 2005 in the Kedron Wavell Services Club,Blue Pacific Room. The Special Guest was Mr Barry Gomersall,former State of Origin and International Rugby League Referee.

Barry spoke entertainingly about his experiences when starting out asa referee right through to his experiences refereeing at the highestlevels.

Congratulations go to George Clutton of Eastern Suburbs HockeyClub, winner of the BHA Best & Fairest Medal for the second year insuccession. Other winners of awards included Ben Sawyers (PineRivers St Andrews HC) – Rookie of the Year; Brad Carlon – Umpire ofthe Year; and Bruce Robertson – Coach of the Year. A moredetailed listing of the winners can be found in a later section of thesereports.

I wish to thank Paul Saunders for his efforts in organising the dinnerand sourcing many of the awards and Susan Johnston for maintainingthe progressive points tally, for her assistance with the auditing of thefinal points and with the production of the slide show. The night was asuccess and a credit to those who organised and managed this year'sevent.

PLAYER SURVEYDuring the lead-up to the Corporate Planning Meetings an 'on-line'survey was conducted via the BHA Website. The survey canvassedplayer opinions and preferences for issues such as:

• were players satisfied with the current fixture template?

• should there be a return to the scheduling of Friday night fixtures?

• should the match times for divisions be spread over both Saturdayand Sunday?

• should club's teams play in sequence?

• should a system of umpire allocation, similar to BWHA's beintroduced to the BHA competitions?

The survey was judged a success in that one hundred and six playersresponded over a three week period. This represents a little over tenpercent of senior players and therefore is considered a crediblesample. The results were subsequently presented to the Club

The on-going challenge for this Association is to reduce the overallplaying costs for our members and one significant way is a sustainedeffort to increase our player base, therefore spreading costs overgreater numbers.

• Susan Johnston for her dedicated, meticulous and conscientiousefforts to maintain and improve the Association's accountancymethods;

• Norm Ludwig for many tireless hours, checking and collatingaccounts and ensuring we met our financial obligations;

• Colin Murphy for his continued encouragement and assistance;

• Kim Rendell for his day to day assistance to the Board Executive;

• To all club treasurers and the countless hours they spent for thebenefit of their clubs in particular and the association overall.

For the benefit of our sport, we move forward embracing all availableopportunities.

This is my second year as Competitions Director and it proved to beno easier than the first. I must thank Kim Rendell, Barry Bolton andJune Grant for their invaluable help throughout the season as well asthe officials of all clubs. The cooperation of the management ofBWHA, in particular Jenny Heron, ensured that on the whole theseason progressed smoothly with only a few minor hiccups. Thanksmust also go to the staff at SHC and Shawsports for their assistancethroughout the year.

As you know, the fixtures had to be arranged around the NationalLeague games and the week-long finals at the S.H.C. It was decidedthat the Memorial Cup and Presidents Trophy finals would not beplayed and instead be awarded to the team leading at the end of thefirst and second rounds respectively, in each division. Unfortunately,looking at next year’s calendar, the same scenario may occur.

Although fixtures had been set, BHA was asked to accommodaterequests from some clubs to change games. This caused a great dealof extra work for the officials involved in setting fixtures, disruption tofield bookings and led to some irritation and inconvenience to otherclubs where these requests were met. We all recognize the benefit ofclub days and strive to do our best to schedule these into the fixtures,however it would be greatly appreciated if clubs could get theirrequested dates into BHA as early as possible prior to the start of theseason so that a fixture list can be distributed to clubs at least afortnight before games commence.

To avoid ill feeling, it would also be appreciated if clubs could keep tothe scheduled fixture times with an absolute minimum of requests forchanges unless absolutely necessary. I believe when fixtures havebeen drawn up and passed by club delegates that they stay as theyare unless undue circumstances arise.

Russell Marsden Director of Competitions

D I R E C T O R O F AD M I N I S T R AT I O N

With the election of Mr. Colin Murphy as President, the 2005 seasonwas the beginning of a new era in the history of the Association.

The BHA Office was administered by our General Secretary KimRendell and once again he has had to work long hours to maintain theoverall business of the Association.

The financial side of our association is organised by our BookkeeperSusan Johnston, and we have an administration Trainee RachelleFaulks in the office each Friday.

The Web site, which Kim maintains has been an outstanding successwith all fixtures, Forms and Results posted weekly thus keeping us allup to date. He has also assisted with the maintenance of the Juniorand Indoor sites.

Competitions Director, Russell Marsden, had fixtures ready inadvance and all was ready for the season to commence at the endof February.

On the Technical side I was assisted by Clarrie Hicks, Barry Bolton,Karen Kuhn, Russell Marsden and Sasha and Niki Hawgood. I thankthem most sincerely for the time they gave to see that games were ontime and everything was in order. I would also like to thank Leon andSue Cross for manning the bench at Burringbar during the finalsseries.

Whilst the fixtures ran well, the big problem was Umpiring. Our seniorUmpires were on occasions, away on National and internationalduties, they were also playing in the competition, some in more thanone division, and this left us short of officials. This situation couldhave been overcome if the players nominated to Umpire in their placehad met their commitments. The Technical bench wasted a greatdeal of time chasing players to fill the gaps. The responsibility tosupply Umpires lies with a: the Clubs and b: the named player; if youcan’t meet your commitment then it is up to you to have areplacement.

Special thank you to Kim Rendell and Board Members for theirsupport during the season.

Phyllis HawgoodDirector of Administration

D I R EC T O R O F UM P I R E S

What started as a promising year for umpires went downhill during thelatter part of the season but concluded with a successful finals finishto the season. A number of factors like scheduling, injuries, familycommitments and work contributed to the lack of umpires during theseason. This was not helped by the, at times, lack of support by theclubs in not providing back-up umpires and comments made atdifferent times. The time has come for clubs to find a way to get thebetter umpires umpiring at BHL1 and BHL2 level which will flow downto providing better umpires to all grades. As a complete associationworking for the betterment of the sport in Brisbane all of us must starttaking a holistic view and what is best for one may not be the best forthe sport in general.

There have also been many positive areas this year. The associationprovided umpires to all Hockey Queensland championships and withthe U13 championships being held in Brisbane, the opportunity wastaken to provide more umpires than we were required to. All of theumpires acquitted themselves well with the majority gaining their firstQueensland accreditation or being upgraded. The following umpireswere awarded badges in 2005:

Badge Umpire TournamentOpen Colin Murphy Premier LeagueAdvanced Chris Grew Under 18 State C'shipsSenior Beau Leadbetter Under 18 State C'ships

Ian Halliday Veterans State C'shipsIntermediate Ricky Dalley Under 18 State C'ships

Jason Cross State Sec SchoolboysChris Beale Under 15 State C'shipsAdam Grant Under 15 State C'ships

Junior Tom King Under 13 State C'shipsJosh Mason Under 13 State C'shipsDeclan Kilkenny Under 13 State C'shipsEthan Trigell Under 13 State C'shipsKurtis Ashford Under 13 State C'ships

Another positive area is the number of junior players taking upumpiring that resulted in the majority of junior games in the latter partof the season being controlled by these players (where scheduling ofgames permitted) and taking the pressure off the clubs to provideumpires. This also meant that many of these players umpired duringthe finals.

Finally I would like to thank the umpires for umpiring this season.With more than 95% of the umpires being players as well I canunderstand the fact that playing is a higher priority than umpiring and Iknow it is difficult to juggle these and your other commitments. Iwould also like to thank Steve Faulks for all the phone calls that hemade and the time he gave up trying to ensure that umpires wereavailable for BHL1 & 2 games. Hopefully more umpires will put theirhands up to fill all the vacant positions on the BHUA executive for thenext season and thus the work load will be spread out and everybodywill be able to enjoy the season.

Have a good off season and come back re-charged to face the newseason.

Yours in Hockey,

Leon CrossDirector of Umpires

Brisbane Hockey Association Veterans’ Sub-CommitteeChairman’s Report for 2005 follows.

PREMIERSHIP COMPETITION – VETS HOCKEY IS GROWINGOne extra team was added this year with Kedron Wavell nominatingtwo teams, Strikers dropping out, and Redcliffe entering in their ownright. This made 14 teams to accommodate. The decision was madeto split into two divisions of seven teams each. By scheduling a bye ineach of three seven game rounds, we could maintain the format of sixgames a week, all played on Tuesday nights at State Hockey Centre.Changes to teams in each division saw Norths in Div One, Redcliffeand Kedron’s second team in Division Two. Fixtures ran from mid-March, with finals played early in September.

Once again all games were played in a competitive manner but ingood spirit, albeit maybe a little slower than in years gone by. Most ofthe umpiring was done by vets players. Thanks to those who backedup to umpire on a regular basis. Having all games on the one nightonce again made for a good atmosphere, and we have been fortunatethe last couple of years with this scheduling.

One small concern, particularly early in the season was thatunavailability of a drink after late games, sometimes even after middlegames if you weren’t on your toes. The Colmslie Sports Club saw thevalue after a while though, and kept the soft drinks cold for the wholenight.

RESULTSBrisbane Veteran’s Premiers for 2005 were Easts in Division One,and Kedron Wavell in Division Two. Grand final night was Tuesday asnormal, however starting times for both games were staggered sothat we had our presentations under way at a very respectable hour.The hour that it finally wound up wasn’t quite so respectable.

In Inter-city competition Brisbane Over 40’s were successful in theCoulter Shield, Over 45’s finished third in the Bill Bennett Trophywhich is run on a format similar to Coulter Shield.

STATE CHAMPIONSHIPSA combined over 40, over 45 tournament was held in Ipswich on theJune long weekend. Brisbane fielded two teams in 40s, and three in45s. There were some issues and lessons learned with selections forthese teams, but overall the participation level was again excellent.

Congratulations to the 40s first team, led by Greg Morgan, who wonthe State Championship. The second 40s team also performed reallystrongly.

In the 45 section the results were less impressive, with number oneteam placed fifth.

A separate event was held in Townsville in late July for over 55 divi-sion. We had a team travel up from Brisbane for the weekend to finishthird in a six team round robin competition.

AUSTRALIAN VETERANS’ CHAMPIONSHIPSThis year this terrific event was held in Wollongong with a total of 63teams playing. Twelve teams represented Queensland in age groupsof over 40 (4 teams), 45 (3), 50 (2), 55, 60, and 65. Results were real-ly terrific for the Queensland sides, with 45s winning, 40s and 60scame second, and 40-2, 40-3, 45-2, 50s all winning second and thirddivision competitions.

Something to think about is that it is possible that Queensland couldhost this event in 2007. If not then it will be 2008. These days it runsover two weeks and requires three pitches to schedule the wholething.

THANKSPeople who helped out this year included our key committeemembers - Ian Edwards (Secretary), Gary Smith (Treasurer), IanHalliday (BHA Director for Veterans), our selection panel which prettymuch came down to Chris Reid and Graeme Higgins, and ColShepperd who once again organised the Grand Final Presentationfunction. Thanks to these people. Graeme and Col between themmanaged to keep the legendary Legends newsletter circulating tokeep us all informed about important hockey matters.

Thanks also to BHA for their support and co-operation through theseason. Vets do enjoy a degree of autonomy which works well for usand I’m sure allows Brisbane Hockey to concentrate on the game atother levels.

PLANS FOR 2006 SEASONHopefully we are able to get our fixtures all at SHC on one nightagain, although if we get further growth that won’t be possible. If Red-cliffe get their new pitch there could be an option there.

There are probably a few things we can do better next year. One thingthat comes to mind is that I’m sure we can get a better prepared andbetter organised team to compete in 45s State Championships.

In 2006 State Championships are in Mackay for 40s and 55s on MayDay weekend, and Sunshine Coast on June Queen’s Birthday week-end for 45s. Nationals are in Perth commencing 2 October.

One thing that has been suggested is a weekday afternoon timeslotfor older vets to have a casual hit. Maybe one afternoon from 3 or 4o’clock, maybe rotating around Gold Coast, Brisbane, SunshineCoast. We plan to see how much interest there is in something likethis.

With that, have a great off-season, and let’s look forward to doing itagain next year.

Season 2005 welcomed Duncan Campbell (Records Secretary) andKevin Kilkenny (Registrations Officer) to the committee, and with theheavy representative program in Brisbane, the year was going to bechallenging.

The junior competition, after spirited debate, was restructured with the“J” Division replacing the Under 15 (1), Under 15 (2), Under 17 agegroups. Valued input from the general committee formulated rules forJ1,2 and 3 divisions and I must say an excellent effort by all involved.Again this year the grass games were conducted at Shaw Park and itwas always a great scene every Saturday with some 16 Minkey (U7)teams starting off the day’s hockey at 8.30 a.m. Following was astrong ten (10) Team U9 modified competition running through U11, 1& 2 and U13 (2) with the seniors in the afternoon. It was a pleasure toroam around the complex and view the interaction between all clubsand observe the quality coaching and support these young agegroups are receiving. The under 13 (1) and J divisions all played onturf at the State Hockey Centre or Burringbar and I compliment thosevolunteers who assisted with the technical bench responsibilities atthese venues. The finals were conducted at the State Hockey Centreturf and grass with nine (9) clubs being represented. Congratulationsto the premiers in each age group.

The representative season started with the AHL finals at the StateHockey Centre and the association provided ball boys, organized andmanaged by Bill and June Grant. The boys were well rewarded afterthe final with various attire and equipment from many of the players.The association fielded three teams in the U13 and U15 CoulterShield and State Championships, and two teams in the U11 CoulterShield. Brisbane hosted the U13 Coulter Shield, and U13 StateChampionships as well as the Sydney visit. Congratulations to allinvolved: players, coaches, managers, selectors, umpires, supportstaff and supporters.

Under the direction of Greg Swann the U13 State Championshipswere conducted at the State Hockey Centre in June. The committeedecided to run the championships from within our junior ranks whichwas a huge effort by all involved. Thanks to June Grant and theBJHA committee, the U13 parent support group guided by Tracy andTrevor Wallis, Norm Ludwig, Ann King, Peggy Morley and the manyothers, who organised a very successful and friendly titles. Thanks toHockey Queensland and Colmslie Sports Club for their support.

The junior organisation relies heavily on volunteers in order tomanage the sport. The contribution of the committee this year hasbeen excellent with all members accepting several roles throughoutthe season. But as we all know it requires many people to contributemany quality hours in all areas of the sport for the association tooperate efficiently. Over the last two years I have observed a newculture, especially in the U7 to U13 age groups. The support for eachother amongst the clubs and their willingness to volunteer for theassociation is certainly encouraging for the future management of thesport.

I would like to acknowledge the many volunteers for their dedicationand contributions throughout the season.

• June Grant, who manages the daily operation of the association, attimes under unnecessary harassment, her contribution isunparalleled.

• Greg Swann, orchestrated a most successful U13 Championships,managed several rep teams, Bris U18 (2), Bris Premier League (2),Qld U15 as well as his regular contribution. I personally thank Gregfor his valued advice and support.

• Sandy Ottaway together with Greg organized the rep transport andaccommodation for U13, U15 and U18. Sandy was very active inmany areas of the association.

• Kevin Kilkenny, valued contribution at the Coulter Shieldtournaments, (technical bench) and U13 Qld. Championships in hisrole as Championship Convenor.

• Duncan Campbell for providing managers assistance for U15Coulter shield and Qld Championships. Duncan also assisted withtechnical bench duties and organizing at the U13 championships.

• Shelley Torrisi in her role as uniform officer, making sure all ouryoung men were outfitted with their Brisbane uniforms for therepresentative season. Peggy Morley supported Shelley in thisrole.

HO N SE CR ET AR Y 'S RE PO R T

Ladies and Gentlemen,

I have pleasure in submitting this report on the activities of theAssociation for the 2005 season.

The Under 9 age group had the largest increase in numbers of 33players, Under 11 increasing by 24 Under 13 increasing by 9, JGrades decreasing by 2 players.
