P R E S I D E N T ' S R E P O R TThe 2006 BHA Year has been and gone – it only seems like yesterday that I was sitting down to write my first Report for the 2005 Season. Perhaps that’s a sign of the busy times in which we live!

When reflecting on the last two years, I think of 2005 as a “stabilisation” year and 2006 as the year in which we started to turn the ship around and build some momentum. The hard work has only just started, but the signs are most encouraging.

At the time of writing this report, we are close to finalising the 2007-2012 Strategic Plan for our Association. This Plan lays out the future directions for all areas of our organisation and I strongly encourage all members to take the time to read it and also, identify one or two areas where you could lend a hand to help make it a reality. Daryl Sahli, Todd Fuller, Genelle Brooks and Ian Harcla (along with the BHA Board) have put in a tremendous effort to bring this document to fruition and their hard work is very much appreciated.

This year also saw a “changing of the guard” in terms of our Regional Coaching Director (RCD). Lex Barney has had a significant impact on the careers of many Brisbane players and coaches over a 10-year period and I want to acknowledge and thank Lex for his dedication and hard work over that time. Well done Lex!

Under the leadership of Todd Fuller (Director, Development), George Clutton was appointed as our interim RCD and together with the support of Darran Bisley as Coaching Development Manager (CDM), good outcomes have been achieved and the signs are very positive in this area. We now have a Coaching and Development Plan that dovetails with our overall Strategic Plan and we’ll be looking to get on with the implementation of this Plan from 2007. One of the highlights of the season for me was the very successful “Antz Day” that we ran at Shaw Park for all the Juniors and their parents, families and supporters. There were close to 1,000 sausages consumed in what was a fun day for all. It was fantastic to see so many boys and girls out running around and enjoying themselves. We’ll definitely be looking to build on this initiative going forward.

Another new and exciting initiative championed by Daryl Sahli this year, was Corporate Hockey. Daryl and his team have developed this new initiative to take the game to a new audience – businesses and corporations. Due to circumstances beyond our control, the day has had to be delayed until February 2007. However, it is hoped that the event can coincide with the Australia v Netherlands Test Match being held in early February – thereby creating an even bigger impact.

Congratulations to all the Premiership-winning Teams and the Players of the Finals (details are contained later in this Annual Report). The Premierships were spread across a number of Clubs which was pleasing to see. Also, congratulations to Jay Weatherley from Eastern Suburbs for winning the BHA Best and Fairest Medal.

This year, we also tried a different approach to Best and Fairest Medal Presentation. After a number of years of a more formal dinner, we held an event at the Sate Hockey Centre, affectionately titled “The Big Gig”. Not only was the Division 1 Best and Fairest Medal presented at this event, but the “Players’ Player” for each Division were also presented throughout the evening. (Congratulations to each of the winners of these “Players’ Player” Awards.) There were a number of positives coming out of this event and we’ll be looking to build further on it for 2007 – particularly, in order to ensure that the prestige of the Division 1 Best and Fairest Medal is protected.

The Veterans’ competition continued to grow from strength to strength with additional teams requiring an expansion of the competition to Sunday night as well as the traditional Tuesday night. This is very pleasing to see and a testament to the leadership of Gil Voysey, Ian Edwards and the Vets’ Committee. Not only has the competition expanded, it continued to be an enjoyable experience with plenty of competitive spirit on the field, matched with much good humour and mateship shared over a cool refreshment afterwards…

At the end of the 2005 season, Umpiring was identified as one of the highest priority issues that needed to be fixed. During the 2006 pre-season, we implemented a new initiative to get more umpires identified, trained and accredited. This initiative was most successful and we received many compliments throughout the year on how much improved the umpiring was compared with recent years and players also expressed how much more they enjoyed their hockey this season. Well done to all involved. One disappointing aspect of

this new initiative was the lack of follow-up throughout the season – particularly in terms of assessments and allocations. These areas will be developed and improved for 2007.

While on the topic of Umpiring, I’d like to recognise the achievement of Pat Fairhall, who this year achieved the milestone of umpiring his 300th First Division Game. This is a tremendous milestone and one of which Pat and his family should be justifiably proud. Congratulations and well done Pat!

As we did this year with Umpiring, we need to significantly improve our approach to the provision of Tech Benches for next season. We still have situations where qualified personnel are not provided to look after the Tech Bench responsibilities. The Board is looking at this issue and we will implement a new approach to Tech Benches in the lead-up to the 2007 season.

Throughout 2006, Brisbane again fielded teams in all major Regional and State Championships. As a Board, we have taken the opportunity to field up to three teams in each Tournament / Championship in order to give as many players as possible, the opportunity to develop their skills while representing Brisbane. There is still much to be done in ensuring that Brisbane produces its share of talented players achieving higher representative honours. The starting point for this is achieving success at the Brisbane-representative level. Congratulations and thanks to all representative players, coaches, managers, umpires and supporters for your achievements in 2006.

Financially, our Association continues to be in a strong position and I’d like to acknowledge the diligence of Paul Saunders, Susan Johnston and Norm Ludwig for ensuring our on-going viability. Our outstanding debtors’ accounts continue to be at an all-time low and the payment of our accounts continues to be first class. Thank you Paul, Susan and Norm for another outstanding year.

There are a couple of important lessons that we need to take from the 2006 season and improve as we go forward:

• Removing personal agendas and biases from the Selection Table. It is critical that we have fair and transparent selection policies in place and people who will act in a fair and impartial manner to ensure the best players are picked to represent our Association.

• Continuing to remove interclub rivalries once we leave the playing field. The only way for our Association to grow and develop is for all Clubs to work together to ensure the survival of all. We have made some good progress with this aspect over the past two years – but there is still much to be done in this area.

By the start of next season (2007), the upgrading of the SHC2 and Redcliffe turf fields will be completed. This will give us more options in terms of scheduling games at times that are more “family-friendly”. We look forward to working with BWHA to develop a workable schedule that meets the needs of all parties.

Finally, I’d like to take this opportunity to say thanks to the following people for their contributions to the smooth running of the 2006 season:

• Kim Rendell for the long hours and hard work that he has provided across all areas of our Association.

• To our Sponsors (through Queensland Hockey Promotions) for your generous contributions.

• All Umpires who helped our games to be played fairly and based on the feedback we’ve received, achieved a much higher standard of adjudication than in previous years.

• The Tech Bench officials for the many thankless hours they spent helping to keep the games running smoothly and on time.

• The First Aid officials who were always there to assist when required.

• All BHA Coaches and Managers – for the investment of time and expertise that you put into developing our representative teams and players

• The Management Committees and Boards of all Clubs (Seniors and Juniors) for your help and support throughout the year.

Brisbane Hockey Association Inc - 8 - Annual Report 2006

• Karin Walduck and the Board and Staff of BWHA for their support and cooperation throughout the year.

• Ken McElligott, Garry West-Bail and the staff at Hockey Queensland for their assistance in many areas of administering the game throughout 2006.

• To the Club Delegates (to both the Senior and Junior Delegates’ bodies) for attending the many meetings and for providing invaluable feedback and input into the running of our Association.

• To the Brisbane Junior Hockey Committee for their work in providing playing opportunities for our Junior Players.

• And last, but by no means least – to my fellow Board members for the many hours of personal time that you have given up to assist with the running of the game for all Brisbane players. Thank you.

As we move into 2007 and beyond, we continue to be on the lookout for talented and dedicated people to put their hand up to take on roles on the BHA Board and its various subcommittees. If each person took on one task or project for the year, then we would certainly make a significant impact in growing and developing our Association. I encourage everyone associated with BHA to consider what contribution they could make next year and to contact us to nominate the area(s) that you’d like to be involved in.

Thanks again for your support throughout the year and I look forward to continuing the journey with you in 2007.

With best regards

Colin Murphy BHA President

G E N E R A L S E C R E T A R Y ' S R E P O R TTo be presented at the Seventy Fourth Annual General Meeting of Brisbane Hockey Association Inc to be held at Sports House, Milton, on Monday 11th December 2006.

Cr. Newman, Mr. Murphy, Ladies and Gentlemen,

I have pleasure in presenting the Annual Report for the 2006 Season.

Overall the 2006 Season can be judged as a success for your Association. As always, this is only made possible through the dedication and commitment of your Association's army of volunteers. These include the BHA President and Board, the many club officials and delegates, and the BHA and club coaches and managers.

FIXTURESThe 2006 Season of Fixtures got under way some three weeks earlier than is considered by most to be ideal. This was due to the many interruptions that were scheduled for the State Hockey Centre (SHC). Despite this Russell Marsden did an admirable job with the Draws. The 2006 season dates have been summarised in the table below.

As was the case last year, neither the Memorial Cup nor the President's Trophy Finals were contested as separate matches in 2006. Instead these were awarded to the leading team in each division following the completion of the first complete round in the case of the Memorial Cup and following the completion of the second complete round in the case of the President's Trophy. A list of the winners appears later in this report.

The Brisbane Hockey League (BHL) matches were scheduled in a similar fashion to the previous season. All five divisions were played on the artificial surfaces of the State Hockey Centre and the Burringbar Park Facility. BHL1 and BHL2 were played on Saturdays only while BHL3, BHL4 and BHL5 were played predominantly on Sundays with overflow to Saturdays. At one point during the season though, BHA was forced to abandon the use of SHC2 due to concerns about its state and players' safety. BHL5 matches had to be re-scheduled to the grass fields at Shaw Park on one occasion.

The central venue concept was maintained for the Classic Hockey League (CHL) divisions. These were played entirely on the grass fields of Shaw Park with the exception of the final fixture day (The Big Gig) and the Finals series which were all played on the SHC grass fields. Veterans Hockey League (VHL) matches were again played predominantly on Tuesday nights. However with the addition of further teams after the commencement of the season, timeslots on Sunday nights were also utilised.

REPRESENTATIVEGenerally your Brisbane representative teams can be credited with solid performances in 2006. The players of each representative team along with the coaches, managers and results are listed in the Representative Teams 2006 section later in this report.

For the first time a new position on the BHA Board of Management was created in 2006 with the representative teams and programmes in mind. Throughout 2006, the occupant of this position, Peter Harten, focussed on existing procedures and information gathering. Peter is now poised to make recommendations that are sure to assist with improvements to BHA's representative efforts in all areas.

COMMITTEESDuring 2006 the Judiciary Committee convened on just seven occasions while the Appeals Committee was called upon only once. I thank the members of each of these committees as well as those who volunteered to stand in from time to time. The full-time members of these committees are listed under Officials on page three.

As in the previous year the Grounds Committee was not formed. The Association was required to liaise directly with ShawSportz Ltd and Hockey Queensland regarding all matters pertaining to the grass fields used at Shaw Park and SHC respectively.

MEETINGSThe BHA General Committee met on ten occasions beginning with its first, immediately following on from the AGM on 5th December 2005. The BHA Board of Management met on twenty occasions. This year's Corporate Planning/Strategic Planning sessions were held on 15th

October and 5th November.

The majority of these meetings were held at the SHC either in the BHA Office in the case of the Board meetings or in the Hockey Queensland Players' Room in the case of the General Committee Meetings. However Sports House, Milton, was also used for several of the more significant meetings including the AGM and the Corporate Planning/Strategic Planning sessions. On just the one occasion the BHA General Committee met at Carina Leagues Club.

COMMUNICATIONSPractical and efficient communications are vital aspects of any sporting organisation. The communications needs of your Association are now almost entirely met by the use of the Internet. All meeting notices, fixture draws, invoices and general news and updates are now emailed to Clubs and their Delegates and in most cases also posted on the BHA Website - www.bha.org.au.

As is the case every year, the BHA Website was given a makeover before the season resulting in a more user-friendly layout and providing faster access and downloading of information and files. Several new features were also added during the year. These included: an interactive Umpiring Quiz; a more dynamic news display known as Latest News; a Veterans specific Website; a Brisbane Corporate Hockey Website; and the commencement of a Website dedicated to BHA historical items and lists.

The Veterans Website was quite successful, the idea behind it being to provide the Veteran players with some sense of community and ownership while at the same time relieving me of some of Web related workload. Unfortunately the latter was not achieved as the volunteer was unable to spend any significant time looking after it. I hope to enlist the assistance of someone with more time available in 2007.

One aspect of the Veterans Website that seemed to have been popular is The Forum. Despite being spammed late in the year some useful discussion did take place. I hope that this sort of interactive feature can be expanded into other areas in 2007. The BHA Website is also set to make more use of Hockey Australia's HockeyNet in 2007.

BHA BEST AND FAIREST MEDALThe presentation of the 2006 BHA Best and Fairest Medal was included in “end-of-fixtures” celebrations at the SHC on Saturday 26th

August 2006. It was given the name of The Big Gig. Congratulations go to Jay Weatherley of Eastern Suburbs Hockey Club, this year's winner of the BHA Best & Fairest Medal.

Other winners of awards included Nicholas Budd (Redcliffe Leagues HC) – Rookie of the Year; Pat Fairhall – Umpire of the Year; and Reg Knowles (Eastern Suburbs) – Coach of the Year. A more detailed listing of these and other winners can be found in Awards section later in this report.

THE BHA OFFICEThe BHA Office, as always, has again been a very busy place throughout 2006. Following a move from the QEII Stadium in 1999 BHA had occupied a room on the first floor of the SHC building. On the 5th June the BHA Office commenced operations out of one of the new out-buildings of the SHC. Affectionately known as The Shed this new accommodation provides BHA with more space as well as more of a sense of its own identity and independence from the shadow of the SHC and Hockey Queensland. Thanks must go to Barry Bolton who acted as Project Manager for the relocation.

CONCLUSIONIn conclusion I wish to thank the volunteers who have assisted in and around the office. They include: Phyllis Hawgood, for the Minutes of meetings and occasional office duties; Norm Ludwig, assistance with matters financial; Thanks go also to Susan Johnston who attended to the Association's financial matters every Monday and who assisted with various other tasks when requested.

Organisations such as BHA would not survive without the continued assistance of volunteers. The position of General Secretary involves many more duties and hours than those for which I am paid. I therefore urge more people to become involved in BHA either directly or indirectly through their Club. Your Association needs you !

BHA extends its condolences to the passing of loved ones and family friends during this year.

Finally I thank my wife Mary and my family for their continued patience and understanding.

Kim RendellBHA General Secretary

T R E A S U R E R ' S R E P O R TI am pleased to submit, on behalf of Brisbane Hockey Association Inc, the Financial Statement of the Association for the year ending 30 September 2006, which follows in this report.

Overall the financial situation of the association is healthy, without being buoyant, with costs controlled and careful management of funds.

The final financial position is within reasonable parameters of our budget expectations.

The recently developed Strategic Plan 2007 – 2012, has identified interesting financial scenarios and has also uncovered minor deficiencies within our current financial planning and ongoing projections for the coming years.

The increase of our player base was highlighted last year and has been reinforced by the Strategic Plan.

Further planning for allocation of funds, to generate greater income, for the association, will be evaluated for the upcoming 2006 – 2007 budget and beyond.

My thanks are recorded to the following people,

• Susan Johnston for the evolution of a new chart of accounts and her ongoing diligence in accurately maintaining the Association's accounts;

• For the many voluntary hours Norm Ludwig spends ensuring our financial obligations are meticulously met;

• Colin Murphy for his vision & lateral thinking;

• For the daily assistance to the Board Executive; Kim Rendell

• To all club treasurers and the thankless task they provided their clubs and the Association.

To our assistant treasurer, Barry Bolton, appreciation for his contribution and also to fellow board members for their input and generosity of spirit.

D IR ECTOR OF CO MP ETIT IO NS

Well another season has passed and it has proven to be no easier than my last two. I must thank Kim Rendell and June Grant for their invaluable assistance throughout the season as well as the officials of all clubs. I wish to acknowledge the ongoing cooperation of the management of BWHA, and in particular that of Jenny Heron and Kathy Duggan.

Once again it was decided by the BHA Board that in the senior competitions the Memorial Cup and the President’s Trophy Finals would not be played due to a shortage of suitable scheduling opportunities brought about by the number of championships and representative games at the SHC throughout the domestic season. Instead these were awarded to the team leading the points table in each division at the end of the first and second rounds respectively.

As the 2006 season progressed, the SHC2 playing surface deteriorated, and was deemed unplayable following the May weekend. As a result of this, fixture games were significantly rescheduled and I thank all clubs and players for their patience and understanding. The venue operators, Hockey Queensland, were moved to carry out much needed repairs and cleaning to see the surface through to the end of the season. BHA/BJHA fixtures were returned to SHC2 with the exception of BHL1 and BHL2 matches.

The 2007 season looks to be more promising for turf hockey with the replacement of the SHC2 surface and the welcome return to service of the Redcliffe Hockey Centre following a complete overhaul and surface replacement.

As Director of Competitions, I believe that when fixtures have been finalised they should not be changed unless unforeseen circumstances arise. In order to have the fixture draw two weeks before the season starts the board needs to have the club nominations at least six (6) weeks before the first game.

Russell Marsden Director of Competitions

D IR ECTOR OF ADM IN IS TRATIO N

The 2006 season was a season of change and brought a promise for the future. The Strategic Plan is well on the way to completion and the many other changes during the season made for a good year. Our future is bright and assured.

Kim Rendell again was in charge of the office administration and this year he did not have the assistance of a trainee so there were many late nights at the office as well as the extra time he puts in at home. Susan Johnston, as the Association's Bookkeeper, maintained the financial records.

The Web site is maintained by Kim and this year he gave us a new look which is both functional and very user friendly. Fixtures were accessible at all times, all forms pertaining to our Association were there and results were posted each week. Looking at other hockey sites, ours was one of the best.

The Competitions Director Russell Marsden had the fixtures done ahead of time and except for a few little “glitches” here and there the season ran very smoothly considering the heavy load of commitments at the State Hockey Centre. Hopefully 2007 will not have as many “time outs”

The technical bench was not manned as often as I would have liked, especially on Sundays but next year it is hoped to have a plan in place to train personnel for this purpose. This would mean that all games would be monitored. I thank all who helped in this department, especially, Clarrie Hicks, Russell Marsden, Barry Bolton, Karen and Barney Kuhn and also Niki and Sasha Hawgood.

During 2006 Todd Fuller and Barney Kuhn were awarded their Hockey Queensland Judges Certificate. Congratulations to you both. I would like to personally thank Karen and Barney Kuhn for taking over my duties after my accident. This was during the busiest time of the season, the finals. It was very much appreciated.

A good many of the problems of last year with Umpiring were solved with an off season working committee of P. Hack, P. Hawgood, K.

Kilkenny, L. Cross and D. Campbell. A plan was formulated and presented to the BHA Board. This was implemented early in the year and resulted in an increase in the number of Umpires for fixtures each weekend. Very few games were left without Umpires.

Thank you to Kim and all Board Members for your support during the year.

Umpiring this year took a large step forward which meant that the majority of the turf games were covered, a greater number of the grass games area and the majority of junior games. There is recognition that there are still some issues with the grass games especially the later time slots and with some of the junior games.

One of the reasons for this has been that a number of umpires, with good qualifications have returned to the game which has meant that other umpires could umpire in the grade they are best suited, as they embark on improving their skills.

Also a number of younger umpires that have been umpiring in the junior games have progressed to the senior games. This has also opened opportunities for younger umpires to get experience and consistent practice in the junior games.

The final part of this years puzzle that I will address is the umpire initiative that was embarked on at the beginning of the season. This was embraced by a number of clubs and has had very positive results. There have been approximately 20 players that have completed their assessments and received their umpire shirts and number by the completion of the season. There is still a large number that have completed stage 3 and need to be assessed and still more that have completed stage 2. These had ranged from the youngest players to some of the older players but they have found out that they can umpire and it is a credit to all. The only disappointment in this section was the fact that some clubs did not embrace it.

As the season progressed and as more of the senior umpire coaches became available most of the younger umpires and less experienced umpires were given feedback on their performance in different games which was received well and is another positive step. On the negative side not all umpires were given feedback and this is an area that will need improvement over the coming seasons.

Finally, the challenge for next season and coming seasons is to continue with the improvement from this season and build and improve on it so that all games will eventually have badged umpires.

Brisbane Hockey Association Inc - 17 - Annual Report 2006

D IR ECTOR OF DE VEL OPM ENT

As the Association embraces a new direction it is time to reflect on the significant achievements of the past. It is important to acknowledge those who have made a significant contribution to the development of our players and our sport within our Association.

This year saw the end of Lex Barney’s 10 year tenure as the Association’s Regional Coaching Director. Lex’s contribution was significant and he had a hand in the development of individuals and teams at varying levels. He mentored players and coaches alike and often went beyond the call of duty to ensure that the Association and its teams continued to function. We thank him for his work and wish him all the best as he pursues other career opportunities.

The Association needs to change. Recruitment, retention and development of players, coaches and officials must be at the forefront of our future direction. To that end George Clutton and Darran Bisley were recruited to provide some of that direction and assist in the initial phase of planning for the future.

The development portfolio will be expanded to embrace all facets of our sport and move away from a narrow focus on elite players. We must be committed to the development of not only players but coaches, umpires, technical officials, managers, selectors and administrators. It is hoped to utilise the wealth of talent and experience we have across the Association and other sports in Brisbane to improve our outcomes in those areas.

George and Darran provided support for the U11, U13, U15 & U18 representative programs throughout the year in addition to providing additional coaching support to Brisbane based State players. A successful Hookin2Hockey program was run at Marsden funded by the Logan City Council and a significant number of school visits took place across the city during the year.

Hockey Australia has provided us with recruitment tools in the Hookin2Hockey and Rookey Programs. It is imperative that we increase our junior player numbers if our sport is to remain vibrant and it must be a priority for all Clubs. The Association needs to take the lead to ensure that we have a co-ordinated approach to that recruitment to ensure that we maximise our return on our contribution.

I would like to acknowledge and thank all those who coach, manage, officiate and run Clubs within our Association. This committed group ensures that our sport remains healthy and that our players are able to develop to their full potential. I encourage you all to make a contribution to the Association's future – in whatever capacity you can. I have enjoyed my time on the Board and have a strong belief that we have the impetus to achieve the changes that we need to make.

Todd FullerDirector of Development

D IR ECTOR OF RE PRESENTATIVE

I would firstly like to acknowledge the time given up by all those involved in getting our representative teams on the field and to their respective destinations. There are a number of people involved in this process including selectors, managers, coaches, parents and the behind the scenes organisers. The Junior Committee does a great in getting the Under 11-15 teams ready but I would like to specially mention Tracy Wallis and Shelley Torrisi for the number of hours they put in for the kids. Their organisational skills and willingness to do whatever is necessary is a credit to themselves and their commitment to making Brisbane representation an enjoyable experience for all.

The aim of the representative program should be to provide all those involved with a life memory experience and provide as many players as possible with the opportunity to represent their city, their club, their parents and themselves. It is through these positive experiences that boys are kept in the game and helps to develop them into mature men.

As we move forward into next season there are the winds of change that are blowing strong in BHA. It is only with change that organisations can evolve and I believe the representative program will evolve further next season. A number of various forums have been held to obtain feedback on this year and this has been invaluable in

forming a direction for excellence for next year and beyond. I thank all those that have been involved in those sessions and I hope you will be pleased to see some of your suggestions for improvement bearing fruit.

The highlight for Brisbane was the success of our Under 15 (3) team in winning Division 2 of the State Championships. They were the only team in the entire Championships to go through undefeated and were a credit to themselves and their coach, Glenys Harten. The joy and unbridled happiness of the boys when they won the title absolutely reinforced the reason Brisbane should be sending 3 teams to each competition.

I would also like to express the gratitude of the rep coaches to Darran Bisley who proved to be a terrific support and sounding board during the Championships. His unobtrusive input to the teams, in all divisions, proved to be a positive influence identified by the coaches, managers, players and parents.

We can only move forward in the representative program with positive support from all those concerned and I look forward to a very positive 2007 as we introduce the necessary changes to provide a better organised approach to the program.

D IR ECTOR OF MARKE TING

In 2005 the Marketing portfolio was not managed as a dedicated role on the Board but this was addressed in 2006.

As a new appointee to the Board and to Brisbane Hockey administration this has been a year of learning and preparation. This portfolio has not been structured or planned for quite some time so the process was required to begin from scratch. In addition, to the marketing role the Board created a sub-committee to make recommendations for a business plan for the association through to 2012. This sub-committee also reported to the Director of Marketing.

BHA has part ownership jointly with Hockey Queensland of a company, Queensland Hockey Promotions (“QHP”). This company is charged with promoting hockey, raising sponsorship and promoting major events many of which take place in Brisbane.

MARKETING QHP developed the marketing plan for Hockey Queensland for the 2006 season with some spin off benefits for BHA:

• The successful “Little Kids Big Dreams” theme was continued from the 2004-05 season. This creative continues to attract positive feedback, and promotional items have been popular with the hock-ey community.

• The promotion of the Hook In2 Hockey program for junior players.

• The 2006 KPI was to increase media coverage by 10% to $126,607. Coverage gained in this period was $79,791 which is dis-appointing.

• The Courier Mail change of format from a broadsheet to a tabloid has made it more difficult for fringe sports to gain coverage for local editorial

• Although the Queensland Blades won the AHL again, little media coverage was gained.

• The success of the Australian Hockey teams at the Commonwealth Games unfortunately did not convert into successful coverage in Queensland.

• Initiatives introduced in 2006

o WIN TV Sign On regional advertising campaign

o Introduction of lunch with a Hockeyroo/Kookaburra

oSuccessful management of “Be the Best You Can Be” DVD for state teams

oOngoing successful use of the E-newsletter

oContinued assistance with the Annual Awards Night

Brisbane Hockey Association Inc - 18 - Annual Report 2006

BHA is working more closely with our local media outlets and is en-couraging clubs to do the same.

The Board formed a sub-committee to promote a Corporate Hockey tournament in September 2006. This promotion has been postponed to 4th February 2007 (caused by upgrading of fields at the State Hock-ey Centre) to coincide with the test match between Australia and Netherlands. Thanks must go to the members of this sub-committee, Brett Smith, Dane McCormack, David Cole and Bronwyn Morris (BWHA).

STRATEGIC PLANNINGThe Association voted in November 2005 to begin the planning process. This was deemed necessary because of:

• Lack of focus and defined strategy.

• The BHA has not grown over the past 4 years. Lack of real growth in playing numbers.

• If the BHA does not grow faster than CPI then fees will increase by at least 21% in real terms by 2012.

• Inadequate facilities.

• A requirement for new revenue streams

• Pressure on Club sustainable financial viability

The strategic planning sub-committee made up of Colin Murphy, Ian Harcla, Todd Fuller and Genelle Brooks have made a number of submissions to the Board, to the Club delegates and to the strategic planning meeting held on 15th October 2006. A comprehensive financial model of the Association has been built and proposals have been put forward on growth targets, structure of the Association and strategies to be adopted. The Board and those attending the planning meeting agree that the Association should be managed according to the following principles:

• Provide opportunities for all players, umpires, administrators and officials to meet their full potential and to enjoy the sport of Hockey, and to

• achieve growth in participation in the sport of hockey in Brisbane, and to

• strengthen and then extend the base of hockey clubs within our jurisdiction on a sustainable basis.

These principles will be part off all our future decision making. The draft plan has been posted on the Associations website and it is expected that many the recommendations will be accepted at the 2006 AGM.

D IR ECTOR OF VE TE RANS

The Brisbane Veterans’ Hockey Sub-committee of 2006 consisted of Ian Halliday, BHA Director of Veterans; Gil Voysey, Chairman; Ian Edwards, Secretary; and Gary Smith, Treasurer.

A report from Gil Voysey the Chairman of the Brisbane Hockey Association Veterans’ Hockey Sub-Committee follows:

This year has been the 25th year for Veterans hockey in Brisbane. It has been a challenging year. Following 2005 when our competition consisted of two divisions of seven teams, we had some extra interest shown and thus pressure to expand the competition. We were fortunate to retain Tuesday night at State Hockey Centre for our competition, using both fields. However even playing just 30 minute halves, we are limited to six games on Tuesday nights.

We started the season in early March with six teams in Division One – Bulimba, Easts, Kedron Wavell, Norths, University, Valley, and nine teams in Division Two – Bulimba, Commercial, Easts, Kedron Wavell, Pine Hills, Redcliffe, St Andrews, South West United, Southbank Storm.

This meant two things. 1. Bulimba were denied entering an additional team, and 2. Fixtures had to be scheduled with three byes each week, as initial enquiries indicated there was no extra available turf time. About a month into the season, the possibility of using SHC on Sunday nights arose.

As a result, the committee resolved to admit another team from Bulimba, re-draw the second division for ten teams, and schedule the extra two games each Sunday night. The timing allowed for two full rounds from that point.

The issue of whether SHC2 was fit for play came up during the season. The surface was muddy and slippery, and there was a crease in the carpet that was a concern. After consideration by all parties, and consultation with BHA on the matter, it was put to every team that responsibility for any injuries that might result from the state of the field would rest with individuals themselves. With this understanding fixtures continued.

Grand Final night was 19th September, a week later than what would be normally the case. This caused some minor problems, but it allowed for the two full rounds in division two, and gave players a later finish to the season. Those players who attended the National Veteran’s Championships appreciated the extra week of competition. Results of Grand Finals were:

Division 1: Easts d Kedron Wavell 2-0, and Division 2: South West United d Kedron Wavell 2-1 in golden goal overtime.

Presentations were made immediately after the games. The “Golden Oldie” Award this year went to all-round good bloke (which is basically the criteria) Garry Royle.

THURSDAY AFTERNOON “OLD BLOKES” HOCKEYAn important innovation this year has been the introduction of social hockey at SHC on Thursday afternoons from 3.00 to 4.30pm. The emphasis is definitely social, but it has proven a great way for lots of blokes to keep “in touch”. With co-operation and understanding of the hockey centre we have been able to provide this very enjoyable opportunity to have a hit to anyone interested. It has been well enough supported for it to continue throughout the year.

REPRESENTATIVE TEAMSFor the last couple of years the format of the South East Qld competitions (Coulter Shield for over 40s, Bill Bennett Shield for over 45s) has been changed so that it is held at a particular venue over a single weekend.

Brisbane did not field a team in the Over 40 Coulter Shield this year. This was because of a lack of awareness on our behalf of the time and place. (It was scheduled for Warwick very early in the season.) A Brisbane team did attend the over 45s weekend at Sunshine Coast. The Bill Bennett Shield was won by Sunshine Coast.

State Championships for Vets were held in Mackay for over 40s and for over 55s on May long weekend, and for over 45s at Sunshine Coast on June long weekend. In 40s, Brisbane was eliminated in the semi-final. In over 55s, the Brisbane team was successful in winning the title with a 2-1 result over North Queensland in the final.

We entered three teams in the O45s. The No 1 team performed well, but was eliminated in the semi-final. Toowoomba won the final.

AUSTRALIAN VETERANS’ CHAMPIONSHIPSThe venue in 2006 was Perth. Queensland fielded 13 teams in all, four over 40s, three over 45s, two over 50s, two over 55s, over 60, over 65. Queensland won the over 40 division 1 title, the over 60 title, and the over 50 division 2 title.

The following are players who play in Brisbane hockey competitions who were selected in Australian Veterans teams:

• Over 40: Ashley Grummitt, Steve Headrick, Graham Taylor.

• Over 45: Greg Rendell.

• Over 50: Rob Milne.

• Over 60: Don Richards, Alan Robertson, Laurie Robinson, Brian Seboa.

Assistant Manager for over 60s is Alan Gough, for over 65s is Bob Rowley.

Brisbane Hockey Association Inc - 19 - Annual Report 2006

The Australian Veterans Championships will be held at Gold Coast Hockey Centre and SHC next October.

THANKSOur committee has once again worked quietly behind the scenes to make the season happen. Treasurer Gary Smith needs to move on, so we are looking for a replacement for 2007. Thanks for your efforts Gary, and thanks for getting both of us into this business in the first place. Thanks to Secretary Ian Edwards, Editor Col Shepperd, and our selectors, particularly Chris Reid who put an awful lot of time and energy into the job. To Allen Schasser – thanks for taking on the task of putting Brisbane back on the map in the 45s division. Thanks also to the various club representatives who came along to our meetings, which were held on a when-needed basis throughout the season.

SEASON 2007Looking ahead we are hopeful of getting fixtures scheduled again at SHC on Tuesday nights, and hopefully also at Redcliffe. This would accommodate all of our games on the same night if our numbers remain as in 2006. We are heading in the direction at some time of splitting the divisions by age groups, eg over 40 and over 50. It would appear we are not quite in a position to do that yet. There are, however, a couple of ideas on the table for next year’s format that will be looked at closely.

We plan to have a Committee get-together/Christmas drink/dinner on Tuesday 5th December at the Story Bridge Hotel. Being our 25th year is a good excuse to get a representative of each club there.

Our AGM will be held early in 2007.

Enjoy the break, and we’ll be back to go round again next year.

Gil VoyseyBrisbane Veterans Committee Chairperson

D IR ECTOR OF JUN IORS

The Brisbane Junior Hockey Association (BJHA) is a major sub-committee of the Brisbane Hockey Association responsible for the running of the junior competition and representative program.

The 2006 season saw a number of changes to the committee with Barry Bolton who had been President over the past three years standing down. Barry continued his strong involvement as a member of the junior committee and as member of the BHA Board. The committee thanks Barry for his leadership and Presidency and his continuing work as a committee member. The Committee also welcomed new members John Donald as Vice President (a new position in 2006), Tracy Wallis as Equipment Officer and Terri Evetts as Minutes Secretary. Tracy joined the Committee during the year in place of Shelly Torrisi. Thank you to Shelley for her good work in improving the organisation of uniforms and assistance with travel and accommodation for representative teams. Continuing members of the Committee were June Grant, Kevin Kilkenny, Duncan Campbell and Sandy Ottaway.

The junior competition saw the continuation of the J Grade structure in 2006. While the J2 and J3 competitions continued strongly it was unfortunate there were only five teams contesting the J1 competition. The J1 competition was played on Sunday morning while all other competitions played on Saturday morning. The competition was well contested across all clubs which was reflected in the broad club representation in the finals series. Grand finals were widely spread across clubs with 10 clubs represented. Only one club won more than one premiership, Commercial in Under 13 (1) and J2. The premierships were shared as follows:

J1 – EastsJ2 – CommercialJ3 – BulimbaUnder 13(1) – Commercial

Under 13(2) – Pine HillsUnder 11(1) – NorthsUnder 11(2) – Pine Rivers St Andrews

Representative matches at the State Hockey Centre and the unavailability of SHC2 for some of the latter part of the season required adjustment to fixture schedules. The Committee appreciates the continuing good work of our Secretary, June Grant, in developing fixtures and changes while accommodating the needs of clubs as much as possible. June and Bill Grant organised ball boys for the

AHL games played in Brisbane. Once again the ball boys were well looked after and enjoyed the opportunity.

The representative season saw Brisbane travel to Sydney for the annual exchange. This year included an Under17/18 team for the first time. Two well contested games were played with the honours shared between the two teams. Brisbane completed a successful exchange by winning the Under15 (1), Under 15 (2) and Under 13 competitions. Season 2007 will be the 25th time that Brisbane and Sydney have competed.

Three teams were fielded in the Coulter Shield in Under 13 and Under 15 and two teams competed in Under 11. All Coulter Shield competitions were held outside Brisbane this year with the Under 15 at Sunshine Coast, Under 13 at Gold Coast and Under 11 at Toowoomba.

In the junior State Championships, Brisbane entered three teams in Under 15 at Gympie and two teams in Under 13 at Atherton. Creditable results were achieved by all teams. At the Under 15 state championships, Brisbane (1) finished second, Brisbane (2) finished sixth and Brisbane (3) won Division 2 in a thrilling final that was decided in golden goal drop off extra time.

Unfortunately the Under 13 state championships in Atherton had to be abandoned after day three due to consistent heavy rain. Both Brisbane teams were well placed in their pools at the time. Due to accommodation difficulties and costs Under 13 (3) only competed at the Coulter Shield in 2006.

We also hosted Palmerston North Boys High School in April as part of their tour of Queensland. Following the match against the Brisbane Under 15(1) team, Brisbane hosted the visitors to a barbecue and the AHL match between the Blades and Tasmania.

A big thank you to all coaches and managers for their efforts over the representative season. It is a big job across the representative program and your efforts are appreciated by the Committee as well as by players and parents.

A successful pre-season junior carnival has held in March with Minkey, Under 9, Under 11 and Under 13 teams participating. The carnival was a great success through the efforts of carnival organiser Tom Whetton with the assistance of Trevor and Tracy Wallis. Funds raised from food and drink sales (approximately $800) were used to purchase three collapsible shade tents and other equipment for representative teams. The tents have already been put to good use across the Association. Tom Whetton and his helpers have committed to running the carnival again in 2007 with planning underway. Thank you to all those who contributed and we look forward to this carnival being a regular feature of our season and to the revival of carnivals as a fun part of the season.

The umpiring initiative implemented by BHA in 2006 saw improvements in the number and quality of junior umpires. We look forward to an increased focus on development and support for junior umpires in 2007. As a first step, arrangements are currently being developed for the pre-season carnival for this event to be an opportunity to hold umpiring seminars, coaching and assessment so the development of junior umpires can start ahead of the regular season.

Thank you to Just Hockey for their continuing support of hockey and Brisbane Juniors in particular.

Volunteers are an important and vital part of an amateur sport like hockey. On behalf of the Association – our thanks for your many and varied contributions across the 2006 season. Your support across activities such as coaching and managing teams, umpiring, technical bench and running clubs is appreciated. To club delegates and Committee members thanks go to you for the time and effort you have given to run the Association and make the season happen.

THE BHA BES T & FAIRE ST MED AL

Each year a special medal is awarded to the "Best and Fairest Player" of BHL1. In order to establish a winner points are awarded in secret by the BHL1 Umpires throughout the Season. These points are then tallied and the results announced at a function at the end of the playing season. The 2006 BHA Best & Fairest Medal was awarded at “The Big Gig”, a celebration to mark the end of the playing season which was held at the SHC, Saturday 26th August 2006.

SERVICE AW AR D - PAT FAIRH AL L

Pat Fairhall commenced his umpiring career in 1983. He umpired his first senior match in 1985 and subsequently his first Division 1 match in this same year between City United (now Kedron Wavell Services) and Northern Suburbs at Burringbar Park. He then continued as a Division 1 Umpire until 1988 when he took a break to get married and have children.

Pat returned to umpiring in 1995. He has continued to umpire Division 1 matches since then up to the present. This year saw him umpire his 300th Division 1 match when he umpired a BHL1, University of Queensland versus Pine Rivers St Andrews Norths match at the State Hockey Centre with Paul Ludwig.

An early influence on Pat was Ian Naylor who encouraged him to start umpiring. Max Phillips was another who guided him through his early years.

Pat has been an active member of the Brisbane Hockey Umpires Association (BHUA) and has served as President.

Amongst his more notable achievements are:

• State Senior Titles 1997 – 2001• State Premier League 2001 – 2005• State U15 Umpire Manager 2002 – 2004• State U17 Umpire Coach 2002• State Open Championships Umpire Coach 2002• National Country Championships Umpire Coach 2002

Pat was honoured at The Big Gig, as BHA Umpire of the Year and was recognised for his 300 Division 1 matches.

SERVICE AW AR D - LE X BAR NEY

Lex Barney concluded almost ten years service as BHA Regional Coaching Director (RCD) for the Association in April this year when his contract expired. During this period Lex contributed to many areas of the Association. He assisted both Junior and Senior Committees to advance our sport in Brisbane. His work with the development of players over many years has meant that Brisbane has been able to enter up to three teams in each of the U13, U15 and U18 State Championships.

In his efforts to develop coaches, Lex conducted many Level 1 Coaching courses. This has created quality coaches for the Brisbane Representative programmes. The culmination of his development programmes for both players and coaches was Brisbane's success at the 2004 State Titles in Premier League, Open, U18, U15 and U13. It will take some equalling!

The Junior Association greatly benefited from Lex's continuous hands-on involvement. He developed and maintained development and representative programmes in U11, U13 and U15, organised trials/selections/training, arranged turf time, attended State

Championships, assisted coaches, and when required drove buses, sat on judiciaries on tour, liaised with parents, along with many other tasks that contributed to the proficient operation of the Association.

His regular attendance at the central venue, Shaw Park, for Minkey/U9 over the past two seasons did not go unnoticed.

Ever diligent in his duties for the Association, never swayed by outside influences with their own agendas, always available and obliging to all members of the Association, we thank Lex for his outstanding contribution to Brisbane Hockey. Lex was honoured for his contribution and service to BHA at The Big Gig.

PLAYERS ' PLAYER AWARDS

During the closing stages of the season all senior players were given the opportunity to vote for their choice of player to be awarded the Players' Player Award, within their respective division, except BHL1. The winners were announced during a ceremony at the SHC, christened The Big Gig, on the last day of fixtures, 26th August 2006. The 2006 winners were:

BHL2 – Chris Dick (PR St Andrews Norths)BHL3 – Nicholas Petroeschevsky (University of Qld)BHL4 – Matthew Beasley (University of Qld)BHL5 – Russell Smith ( Logan)CHL1 – Ross Hall (Valley)CHL2 – Mark Prout (South West United)Veterans – Gary Royle (Bulimba)

ME MO RIAL CUP & PRES IDEN T 'S TR OPHY

These are contested in the Senior divisions only. Once again due to the unavailability of spare weekends on which to schedule the Memorial Cup or the President's Trophy finals, the BHA General Committee decided not to play them.

Instead the Memorial Cup was awarded to the leading team in each Senior division at the conclusion of the first full round of fixtures while the President's Trophy was awarded to the leading team in each division at the conclusion of the second full round of fixtures.
