During 2012 Brisbane Hockey Association Inc (BHA) saw a number of improvements continued. The development of Burringbar following the replacement of the artificial surface through a grant from the Queensland Government continued with the main improvement being the construction of new dugouts and technical bench room. Brisbane Hockey Management Group continues to identify and progress the on-going enhancement and operation of Burringbar Park.

Continuing cooperation with BWHA was a key factor in successful management of Burringbar. In addition the television coverage of BHL1 games was undertaken through a new concept – Hockey Zone – a half hour highlights and information show on Channel 74.

While junior numbers were stable, more work is required to continue to grow our junior numbers. Umpiring also continued to see progress with the umpiring sub-committee being active in umpire management and development, in particular a commitment to mentoring and developing junior umpires. The work of Alan Schasser and committee members as a foundation for further development in 2013 is appreciated. I look forward to further development of umpires, both senior and junior, across the 2013 season.

Looking back on 2012 there are many highlights to note including:

BURRINGBAR Burringbar continues to be operated by the Brisbane Hockey Management Group Inc (BHMG) an association between BHA, BWHA and Kedron Wavell Services Hockey Club which meets Brisbane City Council requirements and provides a partnership to manage and improve Burringbar.

The financial viability of Burringbar is sound with provision being made for future turf replacement.

The success of BHMG in achieving a sound financial and operational position would not have been possible without the continuing commitment and work of representatives on BHMG, in particular Paul Saunders and Kathleen Proctor who took on the roles of Treasurer and Secretary.

LOCAL SPORT AND RECREATION COORDINATOR – QUEENSLAND GOVERNMENT GRANT

In late 2011 BHA was successful in obtaining a grant from the Queensland Government to engage a Local Sport and Recreation Coordinator for three years. We extend our appreciation to the Minister for National Parks, Recreation Sport and Racing and Sport and Recreation Services for providing this grant.

The Local Sport and Recreation Coordinator position supports the Association and cluster clubs to improve their sustainability, including volunteers and growth in participation. Spreading the footprint of hockey across Brisbane was a key objective in applying for the grant and the nomination of the cluster clubs. The growth in participation is focussed on juniors, in particular the Under 7 and Under 9 age groups in line with our current priorities. While the position is required to assist the cluster clubs in developing improved sustainability, successful initiatives will be shared across all clubs. Phil Jackwitz was employed in this position in February and has been working closely with the cluster clubs.

This position provides the Association an opportunity to develop improved club models and expand the areas from which future hockey players are recruited.

MEDIA COVERAGE

TV coverage of BHL1 and BWHA division 1 fixtures and finals was undertaken through a new concept – Hockey Zone – a half hour highlights and information show on Channel 74. The success of Hockey Zone has been a highlight with the half hour weekly show on Channel 74 supported by highlights also posted on YouTube. Up to late August there had been 87,000 hits on YouTube from 130 countries with 77% being from Australia. Live streaming of games was also introduced commencing with the All Stars game against the Queensland Under 21 team and across the finals series.

Particular thanks to Col Morley and Tom Whetton valuable volunteers commentators for their commitment to providing commentary across the season, including introducing new commentators to cover their absences – a big effort and we look forward to listening to your commentary and thoughts on the game in 2013.

NEWSPAPERS

The 2012 season also saw the continuation of the excellent work by Lee Oliver in having Brisbane hockey coverage in the local press. Our strong appreciation continues to go to Lee for the continuation of his good work, vision and commitment in achieving media coverage of Brisbane hockey. The weekly match reports and photos from BHL 1 games on the BHA website were popular and continue to be viewed by a wide audience, as were the regular articles including colour photographs on hockey in Brisbane that Lee gets placed in the local Quest Community Newspapers where clubs are based.

The continuing coverage is highly valued. Lee, thank you once again for your continuing efforts and those of your reporters to deliver valuable media coverage for Brisbane hockey. Also, thank you to club coaches and officials for supporting Lee with information and comments on your games.

REPRESENTATIVE HOCKEY 2012 saw the introduction of a new championship format introducing Super League based on six zones replacing Premier League and preceded by the Open State Championships. These championships were conducted in Brisbane for both men’s and women’s competitions. BHA continued our strong support and participation in State championships achieving commendable results as outlined below:

U13 – 3 teams: 2nd in Div1; 2nd in Div2; 4th in Div2U15 – 2 teams: 1st in Div1; 10th in Div1U18 – 3 Teams: 1st in Div1; 7th in Div1; 7th in Div2Super League - 1stState Open – 2 Teams: 1st in Div1; 3rd in Div2Masters O35 – 2 teams: 1st in Div1; 1st in Div2Masters O40 – 2 teams: 4th & 11thMasters O45 – 2 teams: 1st in Div2; 3rd in Div2Masters O50 – 2 teams: 4th & 7thMasters O55 – 3 teams: 2nd in Div1; Equal 1st Div2; Equal 1st Div2

The new structure of the senior championships presents challenges in organising teams to be competitive as well as exposing promising talent for selection in Queensland teams. We need to look at developing a squad that can be the basis of future Open State and Super League teams to be strong while continuing to provide the opportunity to showcase many of our younger talented players.

On behalf of BHA and our representative players, thank you to all coaches and managers for your efforts in the organisation and support of our representative teams.

BHA hosted the Open State Championships over the May long weekend in Brisbane which required the support of clubs and volunteers to provide an enjoyable tournament that met the needs of the competition as well as the off-field needs of players, officials and spectators across the playing times. Thank you to all who supported the Association in hosting Premier league this year, in particular Bruce and Veronica Luck and Paul Connors for organising the BBQ tent – a big effort which was well done again this year.

BEST AND FAIREST MEDAL DINNER This year we returned to having a separate function for the Best and Fairest Medal Dinner for the BHA Division 1 competition. The dinner was held at the Holiday Inn on 1 September. Congratulations to Jacob Webber who was awarded the BHA Best and Fairest Medal and to Jake Hathaway as BHA “Rookie of the Year”. Congratulations also to the players recognised as the best and fairest for their respective teams. Thank you to Ben Smith and Kieran Powyer for their organisation of the event and presentation. To the MC for the evening, thank you to Tom Whetton for a job well done.

COOPERATION WITH BWHAThank you to Karen Walduck and Kathleen Proctor for your cooperation across the season on behalf of BWHA. The management arrangements for Burringbar and television coverage are examples of working together for the good of hockey in Brisbane. We value our growing relationship and look forward to working with you again in 2013.

DEVELOPMENT AND IMPLEMENTATION OF POINTS CAP SYSTEM This year saw the fourth year of operation of the Points Cap System. The Points Cap System aims to improve the BHA competition and development of Brisbane juniors by placing greater emphasis (and reward) on clubs developing their own junior talent to a BHL1 standard and providing a platform to increase the standard of the

Brisbane Hockey Association Inc - 8 - Annual Report 2012

Page 10: BHA Inc Annual Report - 2012

Brisbane club competition to have a more consistent level of competitive matches. While the success of the Points Cap System will be seen in the longer term, it will continue to be reviewed to ensure that it is operating effectively. Karyn Argent, Director of Sporting Outcomes has commenced a review and is looking at the changes in player composition of the competition against the relative points cap levels.

JUNIOR RECRUITMENT AND DEVELOPMENT

Success in improving junior recruitment is critical to the long term future of the Association – we need more junior players to provide a solid base into the future. The continuing challenge for the Association is to improve our junior numbers which have seen a decline over the past few years. The Under 7 and 9s concept introduced in 2010 has seen numbers rise slightly, however overall numbers are on a par with 2011. Retention is important to ensure that the Under 7 and Under 9 players recruited continue through to higher age groups. Feedback continues to indicate that the concept is popular and has seen some increase in numbers. Critically, there is still much more to be done to attract young players to our ranks for the future of the game. Recruitment is a priority for the Association with support available to clubs through the Regional Coaching Director and Hockey Development Officer. I ask all clubs to look at how they can work with the Association to attract and retain new young players and to do this now so that their recruitment plans can be in place early to make the most of the time up to the start of our season. These young players will be the future BHL1 players in 10 to 15 years time.

COMPETITIONS

This year Division 6 was introduced to create a more even level of competition across BHL4, 5 and 6. There were 52 teams competing across BHL1 to 6. The Masters competition was strong again this year and well organised by the Masters Committee. While the numbers playing grass hockey continue to be low, the Association remains committed to offering a grass competition. The Barbarians concept continued again this year providing a team for the competition with players generally drawn from clubs that don’t have a grass team available.

Looking to the future, a midweek competition should be considered to provide a fresh opportunity at a different competition time that may be attractive to players who cannot play on weekends. Given the success of other sports played during the week, this potential competition may attract more players by offering competition away from the traditional weekend programs.

Congratulations to all premiership winning teams and players of the finals. The finals series produced some good skilful hockey and exciting matches, especially the grand final which in the end was decided by strokes. In particular, well done to Commercial on their seventh straight BHL1 premiership success, this is an outstanding achievement and a record that will stand for some time. (Details of premiership winners, runners up and players of the finals are presented later in the report.) Thank you to all players for your participation in the 2011BHA competitions.

CONGRATULATIONS AND APPRECIATION

At the 2011 Annual General Meeting Paul Saunders was endorsed to receive the honour of Life Membership. Congratulations to Paul on this honour – well deserved for his many years of strong work and initiative to benefit of BHA.

At the 2012 Best and Fairest dinner acknowledgement of the commitment and effort given to supporting the Association was made by way of merit awards presented to:

• Bruce and Veronica Luck and Paul Connors for their strong commitment, organisation and operation of the BBQ tent run by the Association at state championships over the last six years.

• Colin Morley and Tom Whetton for their extensive work in support of TV coverage of Brisbane Hockey through commentary, organisation and enthusiasm.

Thank you to June Grant for your tireless work for Brisbane junior hockey over more than 20 years. June stood down from the role of Junior Committee Secretary this year and her hard work and commitment will be missed into the future. Thank you also to the

Junior Committee for their work in running the junior competition and to club delegates and club officials, both senior and junior, and for your contribution to Brisbane hockey throughout 2011.

THANKS ALSO TO:Kim Rendell for his support and efforts as General Secretary across the year. Particular thanks to Kim for the compilation of the Annual Report – a major task each year. Mick Evans, for his commitment, advice and enthusiasm as Regional Coaching Director and for pushing junior recruitment initiatives. Sam Brooks for his support and enthusiasm in the role of Hockey Development Officer.

Importantly, to my fellow Board members – thank you for you contributions across another busy season. The many hours of your time and your work to run the association for the benefit of Brisbane hockey players and supporters is appreciated. I look forward to continuing to work with you in 2013.

Much has been achieved in 2012, however much more remains to be done to improve our Association and hockey in Brisbane – especially junior recruitment. This puts a strong responsibility on us all to look up from our particular club or competition involvement and consider what can be done on a broader level to grow hockey in Brisbane – especially junior recruitment.

As we look to 2013 there are many ways that you can contribute to the success of your Association. There are opportunities for all to contribute, from roles on the Board, as a member of a sub-committee or supporting the junior recruitment initiative to help grow our Association.

Looking forward to working with you again in 2013.

G E N E R A L S E C R E T A R Y ' S R E P O R T

To be presented at the Eightieth Annual General Meeting of Brisbane Hockey Association Inc to be held at the Brisbane Women's Hockey Association Clubhouse, Windsor, Monday 19th November 2012.

Cr Quirk, Mr Swann, Ladies and Gentlemen,

I have pleasure in presenting the Annual Report for the 2012 Season. The President's report contains many details normally tabled in this report, therefore I have attempted to reflect on other aspects and details.

FIXTURES

The 2012 fixtures began with the usual staggered start as can be seen in the accompanying table. Several noteworthy features of this year's competitions were the introduction of a sixth division to the Brisbane Hockey League (BHL) competition, while in the Classic Hockey League (CHL) only five (5) teams competed with the adoption of a modified Finals Series. In the Juniors there was a combining of J2 and J3 for the first round with a split for the remainder of the season with a similar method being adopted for the Masters Draw. While the Masters Hockey League (MHL) competition ended with four (4) divisions, for the first round MHL2 & 3 were combined.

The Fixtures of all competitions were affected by washouts. In BHL a match was washed out on the very first day. In both BHL and MHL complete rounds were washed out. The washed out BHL1 & 2 matches of 28th April were rescheduled to a Thursday night in place of training. In the case of MHL the washed out matches were declared scoreless draws as per the Competition Rules. In the Junior competitions washed out matches were rescheduled where practical however some matches were declared scoreless draws due to a lack of suitable times for rescheduling.

This year the BHL Draws were drawn up by Tony Battams, BHA Director of Competitions. While the basic shell of the CHL Draw was also created by Tony, the CHL Players Committee refined and completed the later part of the draw, including the Finals Series. Sam Brooks (BHA Hockey Development Officer) created the Junior Draws. Along with Alex Granlund from the BHA Masters Committee, Sam also created the MHL Draws.

The following table lists relevant dates for each of the BHA fixture competitions.

Brisbane Hockey Association Inc - 9 - Annual Report 2012

Page 11: BHA Inc Annual Report - 2012

The BHL (Senior Men's) and BWHA (Senior Women's) Finals Series were again held jointly wherever it was practical to do so. This appears to be a feature that is popular with players, their families, officials and supporters alike. It surely provides many people the opportunity to watch more finals matches across the Associations than if they were separated.

I wish to thank Tony, Sam, and Alex for their work and involvement in producing the various Fixture Draws. Refer to the Director of Competitions report later in this booklet for additional details and comments.

The Under 7 and Under 9 Hockey on Friday nights continued this year and appears to be working for most players and their parents. There has been a small improvement in numbers in these age groups over the previous years and several Clubs have begun to look to expanding the Under 7 and Under 9 Hockey to new venues in 2013. With the location of venues and the need to travel being a major influence in the take up of this age group, providing more venues in the suburbs may well produce more players over time. However it remains a balancing act that will only work with an overall increase in recruiting for all venues so as not to spread the numbers too thinly.

David Cole once again took on the management of the Training Roster for BHA Clubs training at the SHC. David's involvement is designed to ensure equity amongst those Clubs who train at the SHC. I wish to thank David for his time and effort and a job well done.

REPRESENTATIVE

I wish to congratulate all players, Managers, Coaches and Selectors for their efforts in 2012. BHA Representative Teams had a very successful year across the board in this year. Please refer to later sections of this booklet for details and results for individual Teams.

BEST & FAIREST MEDAL PRESENTATION DINNER

I wish to congratulate all winners. Please refer to the BHA Best & Fairest Medal section later in this booklet for details of the winners.

I wish to thank Ben Smith (BHA Director of Promotion and Marketing) for his efforts planning and coordinating the 2012 event. Thanks also go to Tom Whetton for MC'ing and for providing commentary on the night. He did an excellent job. I wish to thank the Umpires for their votes throughout the Season as well as Norm Ludwig for his confidential recording of the votes. I also thank Kieran Powyer for his efforts in producing the slideshow that is an integral of the night.

MEETINGS

The BHA Board of Management will have met on twenty (20) separate occasions by the time of the 2013 AGM. The first of these was held on 16th January 2012. All Board of Management Meetings were held in the BHA Office at the State Hockey Centre, Colmslie.

The General Committee (BHA Board, Club Presidents and Delegates) met for General Committee Meetings (GCM's) on eight (8) occasions excluding the AGM and Corporate Planning. The General Committee Meetings were held in the Hockey Queensland Players' Room next door to the BHA Office. Meetings were well attended on the whole though a few Clubs remain noticeable by their continued absence.

This year will see the Annual General Meeting (AGM) held in the Brisbane Women's Hockey Association Clubhouse at Downey Park,

Windsor. This is due in part to the need for more space to accommodate the Delegates attending our AGM as well for the purposes of providing our members with a first hand view of the excellent BWHA facilities.

STANDING COMMITTEES

The Judiciary Committee was required on just three (3) occasions during 2012. Messrs Philip Hack (UNI), Thomas Martin (QUT), Darren Cook (SWU), Frank Coman (NTH), David Reardon (LAB), Michael Corlett (VAL) came together in various combinations to serve on each of the Panels. I wish to thank them for their time and commitment.

The Judiciary Outcomes section of the BHA Website was updated and enabled on the 2012 site under “Admin”. This section is where brief details and outcomes of the Hearings are posted for members to read. The postings now cover most Hearings back to 2008 and included are links to download the Judiciary and Appeals Rules. The main benefit of this initiative has been is to provide visitors with an understanding of the processes involved with disciplinary matters. It may also be that it provides some level of deterrent to prospective offenders, though as always that remains unproven.

Although Kieran Powyer (UNI) and Michael Corlett (VAL) were appointed to the Appeals Committee for 2012 they were not required to consider any such matters this year. They are thanked for having volunteered nevertheless.

The various Representative Team Selection Committees, listed elsewhere in this booklet, did their usual excellent job during 2012. This was reflected in the level of improvement that was evident in Championship results for Brisbane Teams for 2012. Generally team selections were provided in a timely manner and were posted by Sam Brooks and myself on the BHA Website under “Representative”. A big thank you to all members of these committees.

A Grounds Committee was not considered necessary and was not formed for 2012.

COMMUNICATIONS

The primary means of communication with Clubs is via the Internet, either via email or via information posted and updated within the BHA Website (www.bha.org.au). Documentation and forms, fixture draws, representative team announcements, match reports, meeting notices, general news, updates and much more are provided through the Website to Clubs and their members. Clubs are contacted via email with respect to important matters and information. The Association's Bookkeeper, Susan Johnston, also makes use of the Internet to directly deposit payments to individuals for Umpiring and Technical Bench duties, and conversely to send invoices directly to, and to accept payments directly from, individuals and Clubs.

Lee Oliver has once again been very active reporting all things Hockey both in the newspapers and on the BHA Website. Lee's match reports are eagerly awaited by many visitors to the BHA Website. All Members are encouraged to contact their newspapers to provide feedback that will encourage them to continue including Hockey related items, both in print and online.

Members of the BHA Umpiring Committee were also provided with a login to the Fixture Draws enabling them to post Umpire allocations directly into the online spreadsheets for each week. In particular I

would like to thank Adam Barry, Brian Hawgood and Jan Hamilton for their efforts in this important area.

Two members of BHA's Board serve on the Board of BHMG (Greg Swann and Paul Saunders) and BHA's Bookkeeper, Susan Johnston is responsible for keeping the BHMG books. The BHMG Website contains the online training roster and query forms and has been found to be simple and straight forward for users. While yours truly is responsible for the maintenance of the BHMG Website (www.brishockey.org.au), the Duty Supervisor, Tony Freshwater, is now responsible for bookings and maintaining the data in the online training roster. Thanks Tony. Regular users of the BHMG Website for the purposes of bookings are BHA/BWHA Clubs, Associations, schools and other sports.

BHA OFFICE

The BHA Office located at the State Hockey Centre, Colmslie, is where much of BHA's administrative activity takes place throughout the year. As well as myself (BHA General Secretary) the BHA Office also houses the Regional Coaching Director, Mick Evans, the BHA Hockey Development Officer, Sam Brooks (part-time), the newly appointed Hockey Development Coordinator, Phil Jackwitz and is used for BHA Board meetings. Susan Johnston, also visits the Office one day a week in her role as the Association's Bookkeeper and Norm Ludwig (BHA Dir of Ops) now also has a desk in the Office. I would like to thank Mick, Sam, Susan, Phil and Norm for their dedication to the Association in their respective roles and for the harmonious working environment that we enjoy for the most part.

Norm Ludwig is frequently in the Office volunteering his time to process the claims for payment of Umpires and Technical Bench personnel. Thanks Norm!

I wish to acknowledge and thank June Grant for her assistance with Junior related matters up until her retirement earlier in the year. I wish her well as no doubt she now finds more time to be involved with her family and in other non-Hockey activities.

THE BHA BOARD OF MANAGEMENT

I wish to thank all who served on the BHA Board of Management throughout 2012. Several of them have chosen not to renominate for 2013, however I would like to thank them for their involvement and efforts and I wish them well. Hopefully they will remain involved in other ways with our sport and with this Association. I look forward to working with the 2013 Board following the AGM.

BRISBANE WOMEN'S HOCKEY ASSOCIATION (BWHA)Your Association, its Staff and Officials continue to enjoy a cooperative relationship with BWHA. Our common interest in our sport, our families, many of our Clubs, our venues, are all part of the reasons behind this. Our Associations jointly fund the Hockey Zone initiative and are part of the Management Committee for the Burringbar Park Facility. Officials from BHA and BWHA meet on a regular basis to discuss common issues and to work together on a wide range of matters. From time to time our representatives jointly meet with other entities including Hockey Queensland, BCC and State Government Officials. This ongoing relationship is a credit to all of those involved from both Associations.

CONCLUSION

I wish to thank all who assist and contribute to the operation of this Association. It is the involvement and commitment of volunteers and paid personnel alike that allows your Association to function effectively. I wish to thank the BHA President, Greg Swann, for his dedication to the cause his continuing support.

BHA extends its condolences to the passing of loved ones and family friends during the year.

I thank my wife Mary and my family for their continued support and understanding.

As Director of Finance, I submit the Brisbane Hockey Association Inc. Financial Statements 2011 – 2012, for the year ending 30 September 2012, to the member clubs via this Annual Report.

The majority of the budget areas were within very acceptable tolerances. A budget is an educated estimation, with variables always the unknown throughout a financial year.

As of the October 1st, the previous arrangement with Queensland Hockey Promotions has been terminated, which will not really impact on any future budget, as the income derived over the last two years has been extremely disappointing. This major non-contribution to the association finances is reflected in the size of final surplus.

Savings again were made against the budgeted expenses, most notable in Administration, even with the added on-costs for the subsidised Club Development Officer position.

Brisbane Hockey Association, in conjunction with Brisbane Women’s Hockey Association, under the banner of Hockey Brisbane furthered our commitment by employing Paul Mills on a 12 month contract to continue the broadcasting Division 1 games for both associations, but this year on Digital channel 74 – TV for ME.

There were unbudgeted outlays for equipment and “air” time, but the proactive position of the two associations is to be applauded, as this new telecasting is now national.

Brisbane Hockey Management Group Inc, another BHA/BWHA joint venture, has now been in operation for 42 months and the efforts of the board are there for all to see.

It could be argued that the Burringbar artificial surface is one of the best available, now complimented by the addition of new dugouts, technical bench and electronic scoreboard.

Norm Ludwig has my admiration and unending thanks for undertaking the onerous task of checking and compiling of the direct payments for First Aid, Umpires and Technical bench. This is an enormously time consuming and complex task.

This association made an extremely important decision some years ago by employing Susan Johnston. Under the direction of the BHA board Susan manages in the space of 6 hours per week, on a Monday, to unravel the complex maze of payments for staff, payments to four venues, umpiring, technical bench, representative teams travel and accommodation, uniforms and of course the general day to day expenses such as telephone, office supplies so on. Susan also does additional work at night from home.

Susan somehow also unravels the accounts for Brisbane Hockey Management Group!

At the end of all of this, her ultra professional abilities then produces clear and accurate accounts that ensure that the auditors tasks are very simple when they process the BHA and BHMG financials.

Greg Swann, President of BHA and chairman of Brisbane Hockey Management Group – now retired from the Transport Department, so that he can spend an even greater time on hockey. He once again has managed to liaise, cajole and book all of the representative travel and accommodation requirements. Greg, with infinite patience, copes with the continual contact with officials from clubs and individuals perusing an opinion or decision. Greg is proactive on behalf of the association and considered, thoughtful and fair in his determinations.

To the Junior committee for their undertaking all duties related to the junior divisions, previously performed by June Grant.

To all clubs secretaries and treasurers, thank you for the enormous voluntary time and effort in continuing to manage and maintain the running of their clubs.

My appreciation and thanks to the General Secretary and backstop of BHA in Kim Rendell for his ongoing assistance in dealing with account enquires and overseeing the banking.

My thanks to my fellow board members old and new, for an interesting year with new blood finding their feet and contributing to the very necessary ongoing running of the association.

Last year was not my last year in this role whilst my health remains stable, but I still challenge someone to take over this vitally important and necessary position.

There is no doubt the television coverage for 74ME and Hockey Zone have been a success in exposing the competition to the public and broader hockey community; however, it did dictate (rightly or wrongly) the format for the Saturday competition. The effect was that equal access to televised games for clubs meant that an equalised home and away concept became an almost impossible challenge… that’s not to say it couldn’t have been done better, because with the benefit of hindsight some different choices would have been made.

The other challenge was to fit this into a shared arrangement with the BWHA. A cooperative arrangement with the BWHA is a necessary part of the competition especially with limited artificial surfaces available. Nurturing this relationship and establishing parameters early will assist in minimising competition changes mid-season.

The BHL 3 competition's move to Sunday in conjunction with a 6th division also created challenges. With varying team numbers across the 4 divisions and with access to 3 fields across 5 timeslots, dislocation of teams across divisions was unavoidable.

There are many influences on the competition, and I only highlight the above since in my view they were the most significant influences on the structure of the 2012 competition.

Fundamental to improving the mechanism for creating a competition draw is to actually have a mechanism in place. This currently doesn’t exist. Moving to 2013, its imperative that a structure be established so that future committees are not required to reinvent the wheel. Fundamental to achieving that is to establish a Competitions Sub-Committee. I spoke about this during the year and took too long to implement it, but I’m pleased to say that better late than never this has commenced. The subcommittee will be a conduit between clubs and the Board for matters specific to the competition draw and will consider things such as:

• Options for grouping of divisions;• Venue splitting with the BWHA;• Options for expanding timeslots to suit the competition and to

minimize club splitting;• Home and Away concepts; • Software options for establishing the draw;• A structure for liaising with BWHA counterparts;• Time frames and deadlines for releasing the draw.

I look forward to the presentation of those recommendations to the Board and at Corporate Planning and have no doubt that if clubs support the concept of a subcommittee structure for the competition, that future problems will be minimized and balanced outcomes will result regardless of who takes on the role of Director of Competitions.

Finally a thank you to those who gave support, in particular fellow members of the board and Kim Rendell.

All the best for the off-season.

This is my first year on the Board of BHA and I had a lot to learn. I would like to thank Kim, Mick, Sam & all of the Board members for all the support & guidance that was given during the season. It is much appreciated. My portfolio this year included Representative outcomes, the Points Cap & the Technical Bench.

Our Brisbane teams had an excellent representative season with the following placements for 2012:

• Brisbane 1 won Super League;• Brisbane 1 won Opens, Brisbane 2 were 3rd in Division 2; • Brisbane 1 won U18, Brisbane 2 - 7th in Div1 & Brisbane 3 -

7th in Div2;• Brisbane 1 won U15, Brisbane 2 were 10th;• Brisbane 1 were 2nd in U13; In Division 2, Brisbane 2 were

2nd & Brisbane 3 were 4th;• Brisbane 1 won U11 Coulter Shield, Brisbane 2 and Brisbane

3 tied for first in Division 2. Congratulations to all our selectors, coaches, managers and players on a great result. With some feedback from the Junior committee, our plan is to improve on some of our procedures for next season. I would like to thank Mick Evans and Sam Brooks for all the work they have done this year with our Brisbane players. All the hard work can definitely be seen in our results.

We have seen some additions to our uniform range this year with the introduction of our compulsory track pants. We also have a new BHA backpack for next season. In addition we will have our new goalie smock for the start of the 2013 season. These can be part of the team kit or purchased by the players.

The points cap process was review by the board this year and it was decided that some procedures should be in place so the clubs will know by the end of October what the points cap will be for the following season. These dates will be added to the BHA calendar so there is no delays in advising the clubs.

2012 has seen a few changes in the technical area. We had some new people join the technical team this year. This year has seen some new procedures put into place and by the start of 2013 each Technical Officer will receive a procedures manual to follow.

In 2013 I would like to see more people come on board from all clubs especially for the juniors. We definitely could do with more people involved.

I would like to thanks all the technical officer for the time and effort they put into BHA this year and I hope to see you all back next year.

D IREC TO R O F UMP IRING

Firstly I would like to thank fellow board members for their support throughout the year, it has been much welcomed.

This year saw some new umpires join the senior ranks as well as some umpires continue their excellent service to the Brisbane Hockey League. I would like to thank every umpire that officiated this year. Your service was much appreciated and we would love to see you all back again next year.

Umpiring is not always an easy task. It’s made easier by players, coaches and spectators abiding by a simple thing - “respect for the officials”. I believe this year was a very well behaved season with far less umpires reporting back about unruly behaviour from players, coaches and spectators. Thank you for being supportive of your officials.

This year we used a new appointment system through assignr.com. This proved very successful for BHUA, as it allowed the appointment of umpires with responses back from them within hours. This was used for juniors and seniors and all welcomed this new initiative.

As always I am looking for new umpires and anyone who is willing to have a go. I will never say no to someone wanting to umpire and learn. I can organise training for anyone who wants to become an umpire. All that is needed is for people to show some real interest and we can go from there.

Congratulations to all umpires who went to State and National Championships throughout the year. Queensland is beginning to excel in this area with a number of good umpires coming through the ranks. Keep up the interest and you can go a long way.

In closing, I have enjoyed my time on the BHA Board, worked with some really good people that have a very good, committed interest in our game and how it's run. I look forward to next year and working harder to improve our BHA Competition.

The 2012 season was my first experience on the BHA Board. Early in the year after discussions with the BHA RCD and Qld Under 21 coach the idea of a BHA All Stars game was floated. A game against the Qld Under 21’s before they left for the national championships was then scheduled for Friday July 6th, with players from each BHL 1 club represented it was webcast live by Hockey Zone. Prior to the match under 7/9 games were played between a number of BHA Junior Clubs. The evening overall was a success with the All Stars winning on the night and the Qld Under 21’s getting match practice before they left for Hobart and captured the Australian Championship.

Following the conclusion of the Fixture rounds the BHA Best and Fairest medal was held at Traders Shangri La. Tom Whetton hosted the evening and did a wonderful job while Keiran Powyer’s slideshow during the evening helped make the night as entertaining as possible. A big thank you goes to both Tom and Keiran who have helped the past 2 years with the event.

I would also like to thank all of the BHA directors for the work during the year, it was a great experience and will hopefully continue moving forward in 2013.

Hockey is a renowned team sport that is conducive to family involvement and to effect an on-going “growth” in the number of participants it is incumbent on us all to share in the workload associated therewith. A primary component of team work centres on all Clubs assuming ownership of our Sport whilst adopting/embracing the relevant Codes of Conduct/Ethics applicable to all participants in whatever role they perform.

Accordingly it is appropriate to recall the duly approved and published BHA Mission Statement and associated Core Values as stated below:-

Mission Statement

Our Mission is to:

• Provide opportunities for all players, umpires, administrators and officials to meet their full potential in the sport of hockey; and

• Achieve growth in participation in the sport of hockey in Brisbane; and

• Strengthen and then extend the base of hockey Clubs within our jurisdiction on a sustainable basis.

Our Core Values are:

• Healthy competition on the field; and

• Active co-operation off the field; and

• Mutual respect at all times.

Effective Governance of our Association's functions demands a significant contribution from all Stakeholders with particular emphasis upon co-operation and commitment from all members. I note the following observations with regard to the application/fulfilment of our Mission Statement and Core Values during Season 2012:-

• the inordinate volume of calls to the General Secretary relative to the approved/accepted Rules governing our Sport

• a reluctance to duly complete Official Team Sheets – e.g. incorrect spelling of Players' names, omission of relevant Grading particulars and absence of required details

• an inconsistent application of the 'no tolerance' Policy

In conclusion I would urge all Stakeholders to apply their personal attributes towards a holistic approach to a uniquely satisfying family sport thus facilitating a co-operative rather than confrontational environment.

BR ISB ANE JUN IOR HO CKEY CO M M ITTEE

We have pleasure in submitting this report on the activities of the Junior Committee for the 2012 season.

The first acknowledgement is to express our thanks and appreciation to Mrs. June Grant for her contribution to the Junior Secretary role.

This season's beginning was decided by her to be a gradual exit from her voluntary role as Junior Secretary which she contributed to for many years. The commitment and time she devoted to supporting Brisbane Junior Hockey provided a stable, consistent and reassuring foundation for every part of Junior Hockey. We are certain that her place in Brisbane Junior Hockey will always be appreciated and missed.

We are glad to have been able to support her new more relaxed participation in the hockey community and thank her for continuing to provide background support in the first half of the season whilst we transitioned the functions she performed to various Junior delegates and others. We give our best wishes to her and her family for the future.

PLAYING SEASON

The season commenced on Friday 23rd March for the J1 teams with J2, J3, Under 13, commencing on 31st March. Under 11 competition commenced on the 13th April. The first 3 games in each of these

divisions were grading games and no points were given. Under 7 and Under 9 commenced Friday 13th April.

The Under 7 and Under 9 Carnivals were a positive and popular event in 2011 and this was increased to two events for 2012. A mid-season carnival was held at Shaw Park on 16th June and an end-of-season carnival occurred on 1st September at State Hockey Centre. Each carnival was a well supported event with spectacular weather and had the promotional impact of attractions such as face-painting, a jumping castle, give-aways and elite player visits.

Semi-Finals for J divisions were all played at the State Hockey Centre J1 Friday 24th August and all others Saturday 25th and Sunday 26th August. The Preliminary Finals for J1 were held on 31st August and for all other junior grades and ages on Saturday 1st September.

All the grand final games were played at the State Hockey Centre, with J1 playing Friday 7th September and all other ages and grades on 8th September. Our congratulations to all winning teams and to all other clubs who made the finals series.

We wish to thank the various Directors (Sporting Outcomes, Representative Program, and Umpires) for their contribution to the Junior program throughout the season.

JUNIOR DEVELOPMENT

This season our Regional Coaching Director, Mr. Michael Evans, carried out the Junior Development program assisted by Hockey Development Officer, Sam Brooks. We would like to thank Michael and Sam for their input into our Rep program this year, their work outside of our competition in promoting hockey to the community, and the professional support, coaching and encouragement they provided to our Juniors.

UMPIRES

We thank Jan Hamilton for her support in organising the team of umpires for junior games this year.

JUST HOCKEY

Just Hockey supplied Player of the Finals gift vouchers. We thank Just Hockey for their Sponsorship in 2012.

STATE UNDER 13 CHAMPIONSHIPS

The State Under 13 Championships were held at Hervey Bay from Monday 27th June to Friday 1st July. Brisbane entered 3 teams. Brisbane 1 finished second, Brisbane 2 finished thirteenth and Brisbane 3 finished fifteenth after being promoted to Division 1 this year.

To our coaches Justin Brown, Caiser McMillan and Sam Brooks, assistant coaches Mark Rutter and Kelvin O'Shea, our sincere thanks for your efforts and to Managers Brett Gould, Trudie Yates and Jodie Parker we thank you for your assistance in managing the teams.

COMMITTEE MEETINGS

The Committee meetings were held monthly in the Hockey Queensland Players room. Mr. Kent Rainbow and Mr. Brett Gould carried out the Chairperson role. The attendance by delegates was appreciated and constructive discussions on many topics were held. In line with its sub-committee nature, the meetings were held in a more informal manner to allow more time for discussion. It was pleasing to have delegates canvass a variety of ideas for junior development and recruitment, and we look forward to these initiatives being driven forward by delegates in the near future.

A number of junior delegates assumed a variety of roles previously done by Mrs June Grant. Special thanks to Mrs. Jo Hudson who carried out the functions of Junior Committee Correspondence delegate and Mr. Greg Scroope who volunteered to take minute notes of the meetings. Various other delegates were called upon to assist with Junior events throughout the season and we thank them for their help.

CONCLUSION

We would also like to mention the tremendous assistance of Brisbane Hockey Association General Secretary Mr. Kim Rendell and Hockey Development Officer Mr Sam Brooks. Their generous help, in the management of various activities throughout year, provided an essential service to the Junior operations and we thank them for their support. Many thanks also to the other members of the BHA Board of Management who were able to assist at the junior hockey events throughout the season.

We would like to take the opportunity to thank all the clubs and families for their support and help throughout the year and wish everyone best wishes for season 2013.

MEM OR IAL CUP & PRESIDENT 'S TROPH Y

Due to the unavailability of spare timeslots in which to schedule the President's Trophy and Memorial Cup finals, they were not contested as separate matches in 2012. Therefore the Memorial Cup was awarded to the leading team at the conclusion of the first full round of fixtures, and the President's Trophy to the leading team in each division at the conclusion of the second full round of fixtures, in each senior division.

MERV HAR RIS ME MO RIAL SHIELD

The Merv Harris Memorial Shield is awarded to the club with the best overall performance in the Senior Divisions. The winning club for 2012 was Eastern Suburbs. The Shield was presented to Eastern Suburbs at the BHA Best & Fairest Medal Presentation Dinner.

While the second table calculates the maximum points each team and then each club could accumulate (if they were to win every match) the first table calculates the percentage of points actually accumulated versus those maxima. The first table lists the eligible clubs in order of performance followed by the ineligible clubs.
