Evening and Part Time Learning at Bexhill CollegeMany adults enjoy attending an adult learning class in their spare time. Some want to learn a new skill, whilst others would like to gain a qualification to help them further their career. Evening and part-time courses at Bexhill College offer the opportunity to do both.

The College offers professional qualifications such as certificates and diplomas in Health and Social Care or Early Years and GCSE’s, as well as a wide range of recreational courses which range from painting to cooking, languages to I.T.

We hope there is something to interest everyone.

All adults are encouraged to achieve qualifications to at least level 3 if they haven’t done so already. For adults between 19 and 23, where they are attempting a level 1, 2 or 3 course for the first time, there are no course fees - subject to the course being Government funded. Please ask for details as this fee remission may be the opportunity you need to improve your qualifications and your future employment prospects.

Some adults may need to pass GCSE English or Maths; or develop their basic skills to improve employment prospects. Some adults would like to gain A Levels or BTEC National Diplomas and there is the opportunity to study alongside our daytime students, if this is your goal.

If you just want to learn or develop new skills for fun, our recreational courses offer the opportunity to do this, and make new friends.

Most courses are held at the main College site in Penland Road where there is plenty of onsite parking, and some are offered at the Adult Learning Centre, Jameson Mews, near Bexhill Station along with many courses for adult learners with learning difficulties and disabilities. Courses in the full time curriculumAdult learners can enrol on these courses, subject to a satisfactory interview, meeting the residency criteria and having previously gained relevant qualifications.

Details are in the full-time College prospectus.

If you are 19+ and wish to join one of these courses, you may be required to pay fees which cover tuition/exam fees/board registration. In addition, a College deposit of £95 is required (made up of £60 deposit for books and materials borrowed during the course; £10 admin charge and £25 contribution to broader curriculum studies. Please note the deposit is not refundable if you decide not to join the College or you leave early.)

Advanced Learners Loans are available for learners aged 19 and above. Information is available on our website.

Some learners on benefits may be eligible for fee remission.

As part of your interview, you will be provided with information on any fees you may be required to pay, how these can be funded and paid.

Skills for Life

All Skills for Life courses are free but students are required to pay a registration fee.

We specialise and have a great deal of experience in offering qualification

courses designed specifically for adults with learning difficulties. We

have a range of courses at a variety of different levels depending upon

the ability of the learner. All courses are accredited, portfolio based and certificated.

Courses offered for 2016-17 are:• Employability–acoursedesignedtoimproveastudent’sskills

and qualities and develop an understanding of the workplace and job opportunities, whether as a volunteer or as a paid worker. The levels for study range from Entry Level 2, Entry Level 3 and Level 1.

• LifeandLivingSkills–allowsastudenttodevelopandbecomeaware of their community and improve their personal and social skills when living and working in the community. The levels for study are offered at Entry Level 2 and Entry Level 3.

• PersonalProgress–isanEntryLevel1qualificationandismadeup of units which broadly fall into the following categories: personal development, literacy and numeracy. Progression leads to Personal and Social Development and employability qualifications.

In addition, we offer courses centred on developing personal and social skills, self-advocacy, literacy and numeracy whilst studying one or more of the following areas of interest: IT, photography, horticulture, looking after animals, wildlife, music and performance. These courses are available from Entry Level 1 to entry Level 3.

Mindfulness CourseMind full or Mindful?Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) is the most recognised and established mindfulness course, taught all over the world, and scientifically proven to help people cope better with stress, depression and anxiety.

The course consists of 8 week two-hour sessions and one full-day. Through guided meditations, group dialogue, and home assignments, you will learn the essential principles of mindfulness and techniques to build your personal home practice and access the wide-ranging benefits well beyond the course.

Working with Mixed MediaLevel 2 AwardIf you are starting out in photography or you are an amateur photographer looking to get to grips with more than just the auto functions on your camera, then this course is perfect for you. Paediatric First Aid (for those working in a childcare setting)

12 hours over 3 weeks This course is designed for people who want to receive training in emergency first aid and is especially suited for nominated first aiders in smaller, low-risk working environments.

The content of this course provides basic lifesaving first aid and workplace health and safety regulations.

Food Safety in Catering Level 2 AwardThis nine hour course provides essential training in the principles of preparing food in hygienic conditions and minimising the risks of food poisoning. It is necessary for anyone working with food. At the end of the course students sit a short multiple choice test to gain the Level 2 Award in Food Safety. Students must attend ALL sessions.

This course could be suitable for a full time intern or someone already working part time in the industry who can fully commit to the fast track programme.

It prepares students to teach in the Further Education and Skills Sector (FESS). The broad aim of the module is to provide a thorough preparation for teachers and trainers who want to work in the Further Education sector in terms of their knowledge, skills and professional attributes. It provides an opportunity for people who are considering teaching in the post-16 sector (14 years plus) or those who do not have the required teaching hours for the Diploma in Education and Training , to achieve the Introductory Award in Teaching. FoundationArt and DesignFoundation Diploma Level 3/4This exciting and intensive one-year, full time course prepares you for studying Art and Design at Higher Education. The course is diagnostic in its first stage, during which you will develop your research and visual recording skills into a broad range of both two and three dimensional options.

Health and Social CareEDExCEL Diploma Levels 2 & 3This qualification is accredited with a minimum of 46 credits. It is a part time work-based qualification intended for those working on the health and social care workforce and serves as the required qualification for registration and regulatory requirements in the social care sector.

You will be required to do a minimum of two days voluntary or paid work in a care setting.

Certificate in Counselling Skills and Theory Level 3This nationally recognised course is validated by the NCFE, and although it is not a licence to practise as a counsellor it provides a progression route to a Diploma in Counselling.

This is an ideal qualification for those seeking to enhance their employment skills through the use of counselling skills (e.g. nurses/social workers). It could also be useful to those seeking a career change, to those offering help on a one-to-one basis and those wishing to progress to further training as a professional counsellor. English GCSEIf you haven’t managed to achieve your grade C you will have to re-sit your English Language GCSE. You will do the course in one year alongside your main programme of study.

You will study a wide range of texts from the 19th, 20th and 21st centuries, including literature and literacy non-fiction as well as other writing such as reviews and journalism.

what could i do next? GCSE English is a crucial qualification for a very wide range of jobs and more advanced courses.

entry requirements: GCSE D or below in English or equivalent.

Maths GCSEThis one-year course prepares students for the GCSE examination at Foundation Level, grades C to G. This is the standard GCSE Maths, which many jobs require at grade C. Assessment is by 2 examinations in May/June, one calculator and one non-calculator. Students may opt to take the Higher tier examination, but will need to complete extra independent work on Higher topics outside of the classroom as the C to G topics are the main focus.

The course covers topics such as number work, algebra, shape, space and measure, and data handling. At the beginning of the course you will need a scientific calculator and you will be required to buy the recommended course materials, workbook and CDROM. Internet access is required to complete homework tasks. Mock assessment tests will be given during the year to assess your progress.

NB. The change from modular exams to linear exams is government led - all schools and colleges will now be taking linear Mathematics GCSE, which means that the two exams are both taken at the end of the course.

Paying your feesRecreational courses Course fees must be paid in full at

least two weeks prior to the start of the course. Please

note we are unable to offer concessions for recreational

courses. You may also incur additional costs for materials

/ ingredients which need to be used as part of the course

e.g. cookery courses and oil painting.

Part time qualification courses: The fee covers

teaching, tutorials and assessment / exam fees for the

course if appropriate.

If you are enrolled on a qualification course in the part

time programme, your deposit of £60 must accompany

your enrolment form. If the course is more than 8 Weeks

duration you can pay your tuition fees in 2 instalments.

The first instalment must be paid on or before the

enrolment evening on Monday 12th September. The

final payment by 10th October. Unfortunately if the fees

are not paid in full by this date you will be withdrawn

from the course.

If you choose to pay by instalments, you make a

commitment to follow the entire course, and may be

liable for the full amount of fees and any exam costs

etc that may have been paid on your behalf if you

subsequently withdraw without making full payment.

Course Viability: If the number of students on your

course falls below a certain level (usually 8 students) we

will contact you and discuss the options.

These may include reducing the total hours of the

course, reducing the number of weeks, or amalgamating

with another group. As a last resort we reserve the right

to close the course.

Facilities For HireBexhill College Sports Centre This Centre adjacent to the College is available to hire for a variety of activities, and is open on weekday evenings and weekends. This centre incorporates a large sports hall suitable for badminton, basketball, indoor football, cricket, netball etc. There is an integral climbing wall and separate mirrored Dance Studio. The Sports Centre can also be hired for children’s parties.

Outdoor Floodlit Astro Turf Pitch Outside there is a floodlit Astro Turf pitch for hockey and five-a-side football. The Astro Turf is open weekday evenings 4.30pm to 9.30pm and up to 2.00 pm on Saturdays. It is closed all day on Sundays.
