Small Boat Sailing- 3rd Season

Four buoys, built by Bob Rosenfeldt, have been set around the edges of the south basin for a summer race course, leaving the center deeper water available for boats at anchor. The course may also be used for rowing, paddling etc. There is no cost and participation is open to all. Launch boats and meet at the “log rolling” beach across from the Escanaba Beach bathhouse on Aronson Island. You can also launch at the municipal ramp or keep your boat at the marina. Secured dry storage for small boats, as well as wet storage, is available for a fee. See the Harbormaster for more information. These are fun races to give everyone a chance to get on the water and sail with other boats. If there is interest, more formal regattas will be held during the summer.

A new Facebook group is "Escanaba Dinghy Sailing Group". It is set up to be a member run group.

A BIG THANK YOU to Bob Rosenfeldt and Tom Woodaz for their leadership!

Marine Gale Forecasts by Gregg Bruff

When I look at zone weather forecasts on NOAA, I've been wondering why they issue Gale Warnings for anticipated winds of only 25 kts (28 mph) when a gale on the Beaufort Scale is 39 mph? I asked Matt Zika of the NOAA office in Marquette if he could help this old sailor understand. Matt replied that my sailor acumen is not failing me.

Gales are issued when winds or frequent gusts are expected to be 35 knots or greater. When lake headlines are issued (gales warnings, small craft advisories, etc.) they are issued for the whole geographic zone in a particular area. Based on the size of some of those zones, the actual gale conditions or small craft advisory conditions could be confined to only a portion of the geographic zone. So, if you see a gale warning and the winds are only forecast for 20 kts or so, look at the larger picture. It may not be apparent on the website you are viewing.

http://marine.weather.gov/MapClick.php?site=mqt&zmx=&zmy=&map_x=216&map_y=227&x=216&y=227#point_notices

Accessing the forecast at this link, the forecast is for the closest grid box available (grid points exist every 2.5 km across the U.S. and Great Lakes). Thus, the forecast at that grid point could have a forecast that is below gale or small craft conditions, but if it falls within the larger zone, used for marine alerts, it would be highlighted.

Cell phone coverage, even with an auxiliary amplifier and external antenna, is very patchy in parts of

northern Green Bay and Lake Michigan. The digital towers are designed to only reach and connect about

22-25 miles for voice conversations. If your phone indicates a signal, a typical cellphone has enough power

to reach a cell tower up to 45 miles for sending & receiving text messages.

How to conduct an Automated Radio Check

It’s simple to use: Simply tune your radio channel 28.

Conduct a radio check as you normally would.

Upon releasing the mic, the system will replay your transmission, letting you hear how you sound.

How to activate the Escanaba Light fog signal (MRASS)

The Mariner Radio Activated Sound Signal (MRASS) system allows the boater to activate the Aid to Navigation sound signal. To activate the fog signal, tune your VHF marine radio to channel 83A and depress the microphone five times. The foghorn signal activation on Channel 83 requires a longer duration than 5 quick "dits" or "dots". Think of it as 5 "dahs" or "dashes". It is also possible to turn the U.S. automated horns off by keying the mic three times.
