TWO STATE QUALIFIERS LEAD YOUTHFUL FOREST CITY TEAM The Forest City Indians will
work to build young talent this
year, while two state qualifiers
return to lead the team.
Bringing a wealth of experi-
ence to this year’s squad are se-
niors Alex Paulson and Pierce
Gelhaus, who both advanced
to state last winter. Paulson
will once again wrestle at 220
pounds, after taking fourth
place in that weight division at
state last season. Gelhaus moves
up to 145 pounds this year, af-
ter wrestling at 138 pounds last
year at state.
Other wrestlers who per-
formed well in the postseason
last year are juniors Maverick
Freerksen at 152 pounds and
Noah Paulson at 182-195. Fre-
erksen took second at sectionals
last year and fourth place at dis-
tricts, while Noah Paulson was
third at sectionals and placed
fourth at the conference meet.
Rounding out the returning
lineup are 170 pound junior
Triston Springer and sopho-
mores Alec Fett (106) and East-
won Jacobs (160), who were
starters last season, along with
sophomores Evan Larson (220-
285), Eric Hamilton (113) and
Tim Buck (152-160).
The Indians also have a large
slate of newcomers this season,
including: seniors Cedric Har-
ris, Blake Jacobs, Kameron Ro-
hwedder and Timmy Thomp-
son; juniors Ethan Alsop, Dylan
Schleuger and Tommy West;
sophomores Dylan Benitez,
Drake Bullis, Dylan Jenkins,
Jacob Koppen, Josef Kudej and
Tristan Tabb; and freshmen
Cody Lunning, John Olson,
Zach Osborn, Gabe Staudt, Ja-
cob Trunkhill, Zack Wagner,
Brett Walton and Justin Wellik.
Head Coach Steve Staudt re-
turns for his sixth year at the
helm, having compiled a 56-42
record. Assistant coaches are
Steve Pickar, Andy Eastvold and
Taran Larson.
The Indians placed fifth at the
North Iowa Conference meet
last season and had a 6-2 duel
record in the conference. Their
overall record was 14-16. With
the switch to the Top of Iowa
Conference this season, many
of the Indians’ old rivals will
continue to be their top com-
petition, including Osage, Lake
Mills and Garner-Hayfield/
Ventura. Staudt says they aim to
finish in the top three this year.
With many inexperienced
wrestlers on the squad this sea-
son, Staudt says they will be
looking to last year’s top con-
tenders for leadership. “We will
be young and untested com-
pared to a lot of our opponents
this year,” said Staudt, noting
that they’ll need their younger
wrestlers to develop quickly. He
expects Gelhaus, Alex Paulson,
Noah Paulson, Freerksen and
Fett to be his team’s top wres-
tlers this season.
Members of the Forest City Wrestling team for the 2015/2016 season are (front from left): Eric Hamilton, Magan Krein, Sarah Nordskog, Jasmin West, Bran-don Finch, Fran Wasicek, Alley Larson, Johanna Juveland and Justin Wellick. Second row: Tim Buck, Blake Jacobs, Maverick Freerksen, Triston Springer, Alec Fett, Brett Walton, John Olson, Kameron Rohwedder, Cedric Harris and Dylan Benitez. Third row: Coach Andy Eastvold, Coach Steve Pickar, Timmy Thompson, Dylan Schleuger, Cody Lunning, Josef Kudej, Pierce Gelhaus, Head Coach Steve Staudt and Coach Keith Walker. Back row: Alex Paulson, Easton Jacobs, Gabe Staudt, Dylan Jenkins, Zack Wagner, Jacob Trunkhill, Ethan Alsop, Tommy West, Noah Paulson and Evan Larson. EAGLES RETURN 10 GRAPPLERS West Hancock head wrestling
coach, Mark Sanger, kicks off his
fifth season at the helm of the
program this season welcoming
back 10 returning letterwinners.
Sophomores Dawson Goodrich
(145/52), Cameron Clark (160/70),
Preston Cink (160/70), Hunter
Hagen (182), Colton Francis (195),
Austin Brouwer (285) and juniors
JJ Holland (106), Clayton Brown
(132), Nick Lemmon (138) and
Jordan Weiland (170).
Seven additional grapplers join
the team to compete in the 2015-
2016 Iowa High School wrestling
season; freshmen Nathan Ca-
brera (106), Reed Brown (132/38),
Dalton Subject (126/32), Bennett
Bruns (145/52), Caleb Eckels (170),
and sophomores Jordi Rodriguez
(152/60) and Jaxson Heald (220).
“We have a solid nucleus of
young wrestlers that gained a
great deal of experience last year,”
said Coach Sanger. “We have an-
other group of young wrestlers
entering the room this year. We
will continue to look for improve-
ment on last year and work our-
selves back into a competitive po-
sition as a tournament team.”
West Hancock posted an overall
record of 9-21 as a Dual Team last
season.
“Dual meets will be a challenge
for our team this year as we will
struggle to fill all 14 weights, but
we will have some individuals
who are capable of competing at
a high level,” praised Sanger.

LOW NUMBERS, HIGH EXPECTATIONS FOR GHV WRESTLERS Wrestling has been on the re-
bound at GHV over the last couple
of seasons and Cardinal fans are
hoping to see that trend continue.
The Cards will be under the guid-
ance of Cory Jenniges this season.
Jenniges moved into the role after
assisting Steve Smith during the
last two seasons. Coach Jenniges
has a solid resume that includes
three years of leading varsity
programs along with coaching
successful youth programs in
Belmond and Garner since 2002.
Working as assistants with Jenni-
ges are Travis Dodd, Eric Jackson
and Ethan Bass.
After struggling with very low
numbers for several years the
Cardinals worked their way to a
successful season last year. The
Cards finished 18 – 17 in dual ac-
tion while finishing third at the
NIC conference meet.
GHV enters the season with
three individuals earning pre-
season ranking attention. Lead-
ing the group is junior Conner
Shaw who begins the season rated
third individually. Shaw was the
Cardinals’ top wrestler last year
after going 50-8 overall. His ac-
complishments included the NIC
title at 160 pounds along with
first place finishes at the Class
2A Sectional and District tourna-
ments. Conner went on to finish
sixth overall at the State Wres-
tling Meet. Shaw is expected to
compete at 170 pounds this year.
Also gaining preseason atten-
tion with a ranking of eighth in-
dividually is senior Cade Baker.
Baker’s record of 47 – 6 last year
is a bit misleading as four of those
defeats were to the same oppo-
nent. Cade also advanced to the
state meet after earning second
place medals at the NIC tourney,
the sectional tourney and the dis-
trict tourney. Baker is expected to
fill the 180-pound slot after com-
peting at 170 pounds last year.
GHV junior Austin Case has
also earned a preseason ranking
of seventh after finishing 34 – 17
last year. Case earned the runner-
up spot at both the NIC and sec-
tional meets and just missed a
trip to the state tournament after
placing fourth at the district tour-
ney. Case was a 106-pounder last
season and is expected to fill the
113-pound slot this year.
The Cardinals have two addi-
tional junior letter winners that
are hoping to pick up a few more
wins this season. Colyn Schone-
man was 22 – 13 last year at 132
pounds and is expected to move
up to 152 pounds. Grady Um-
barger went 18-22 at 182 pounds
in 2014-15 and will compete at
195 pounds this year. Sopho-
mores Spencer Formanek and
Anthony Sherwood are GHV’s
remaining letter winners. Sher-
wood will fill the 145-pound spot
while Formanek is expected to go
at 138 pounds.

NORTH IOWA BOWLERS RETURN STRONG LINEUP The North Iowa bowling
teams look to have a competitive
season this winter, with most of
last year’s talent returning for
both the boys and girls.
The boys’ returning lineup
includes State qualifier Spencer
Armstrong, a junior, who took
10th place individually at State
last year. He was also named
to the First Team All-District.
Another returning All-District
performer is sophomore Noah
Melz, who was named to the
Second Team last season. Letter
winners Zach Dirksen, a senior,
and Willie Roeder, a sophomore,
are also back, along with junior
Cameron Roth.
Back to lead the girls’ team
again this season is junior Syd-
ney Giesking, who was an All-
District Honorable Mention and
letter winner last season. Also
returning are letter winners
Jenna Berschman and Jordan
Ostrander, both sophomores,
along with junior Allison Alme-
lien.
Newcomers for the boys in-
clude freshmen Joey Blocker,
Ben Hassebroek, Dominic Fish-
er and Michael Powell. Joining
the girls’ squad this season is
freshman Kiaya Wales.
Head Coach Doug Aukes re-
turns for his 16th year with the
program. He says the bowlers
have been improving their spare
conversions, and they have the
ability to put a lot of strikes to-
gether, which will help them to
be successful this year. He notes
that they do have some new
bowlers this season who will
need to mature into the funda-
mentals of the game.
Aukes expects Waverly-Shell
Rock, Vinton and Charles City
to be the top contenders in the
district this season. He says the
keys to success for the Bison will
be picking up spares and getting
into a zone and staying focused.

BISON AIM TO TURN THINGS AROUND THIS SEASONAfter a disappointing season
last winter, the North Iowa Bi-
son have nowhere to go but up
as they return to the basketball
court.
The Bison were unable to put
together a win all of last season,
as they finished 0-22 overall and
at the bottom of the North Iowa
Conference standings.
Just two starters return for the
Bison: junior guard Austin Ha-
isman and junior forward Drew
Jensen. They are the top return-
ing scorers for the team, with
Haisman averaging 6.9 points
per game last season and Jen-
sen averaging 5.4. Jensen led in
rebounds last year with 4.7 per
game and in steals with 19. Ha-
isman led in assists with 1.7 per
game and in free throws with a
62% success rate.
Three returning seniors round
out the starting lineup this year,
including forwards Steven Mil-
brandt and Josiah Beenken and
guard Logan Eichenberger.
Ten newcomers fill out this
year’s roster, including senior
Hunter Gelhaus; juniors Colin
Weaver, Alex Balvance, Sam
Hassebroek, Freddie Eden and
Noah Melz; sophomores Jordan
Boekelman, Nathan Beenken
and Taylor Baumann; and fresh-
man Isaiah Walk.
Head Coach Chad Hinders is
back for his seventh year with
the Bison, with an overall re-
cord of 84-77. Justin Ullmann
returns as assistant coach.
Hinders says having return-
ing players who have played in
various roles at the varsity level
will be a strength this year, but
the team needs to understand
and execute game management
situations better. “Our reserves
are seeing their first varsity ac-
tion, and how fast they pick up
on things and perform will dic-
tate our approach to each game,”
said Hinders.
Some things the Bison will
be working on include creat-
ing turnovers and playing at a
more up-tempo pace. “Efficient
executions on both ends of the
f loor will be crucial,” said Hin-
ders. “We have an older nucleus
that has played various roles at
the varsity level that are ready
to compete against some of the
better teams that our area has to
offer. How well the season pro-
gresses will be determined by
the development by our younger
players and our overall team
chemistry.”
Hinders says the Bison will
be competitive if they can stay
healthy and strive to get better
each time they’re on the court.
He says their goals include giv-
ing 100% effort at all times, be-
ing resilient and having fun.
In this inaugural season of Top
of Iowa Conference action, Hin-
ders says Lake Mills, Forest City,
West Hancock and Garner-Hay-
field/Ventura are all contenders
for the conference title.
Members of the North Iowa boys basketball team for the 2015/2016 season are: (front from left) Nathan Beenken, Drew Jensen and Jordan Boekelman. LADY BISON LOOK TO BE MORE COMPETITIVEThe North Iowa girls’ bas-
ketball team will focus on im-
provement this season, under
the direction of a new coach.
The Lady Bison didn’t see
much success on the court last
year, finishing with a confer-
ence record of 3-15 and an
overall record of 3-18.
Matt Harriman steps in as
head coach this year, after serv-
ing as assistant coach last sea-
son. He will be assisted by Mark
Ostermann, who is a veteran
coach of the boys’ basketball
program at North Iowa.
The Lady Bison bring back
four starters from last year, in-
cluding senior guard Brooke
Hovland, junior guards Rachel
Hassebroek and Dani Yegge,
and sophomore forward Krista
Schutter, who received Honor-
able Mention in the conference
last season. Others back this
year are senior forward Mica
Johnson, junior forward Kend-
all Melz and sophomore guard
Rachel Schutter. Newcomers
this season are junior forward
Jessica Govern and freshman
forward Katelin Adams.
Krista Schutter is the team’s
top returning scorer, as she av-
eraged 9.8 points per game last
season. Hassebroek is the re-
turning leader in steals and as-
sists.
While the Lady Bison don’t
have a lot of height to work
with this season, Coach Har-
riman says their speed will be
a strength. He says they expect
to be more competitive this sea-
son. “We had a lot of freshmen
playing last year, so having a
year to experience that should
make us better,” said the coach.
Harriman says they’ll be
working every day to get bet-
ter as a team, and he says ev-
eryone needs to work together
and have confidence to be suc-
cessful. He predicts Forest City,
West Hancock and Osage will
be the teams to beat in the Top
of Iowa-West Conference.
Members of the North Iowa girls baskbetball team are: (front row, left to right) Danielle Yegge, Jenna Govern, Rachel Hassebroek and Jessica Govern.Middle row: Taylen Hinders, Christa Miller, Brooke Hovland, Ivey Greensky, Mica Johnson, Shamea Harris and Lexie Arnevik. WEST HANCOCK PREPS FOR SEASON The West Hancock boys’ bas-
ketball team has been busy on the
court the past month prepping for
this year’s season and the ultimate
goal of earning a consecutive spot
back to the State Tournament.
The Eagles return two senior
guards this year, which will be
playing their fourth varsity year
as an Eagle. Connor Sonius, a
strong passing and shooting point
guard along with Nate Paulus, a
long-range specialist.
Both seniors have each scored
over 1,000 points for West Han-
cock. Sonius holds the school
assists record, while Paulus the
school’s three-point record.
Last year, West Hancock fin-
ished second in the North Iowa
Conference, won the Regional
Tournament to advance to the
State Class A Tournament to con-
clude the season after the first
round with an overall 22-5 re-
cord.
The Eagles’ goals never change
said 8th year head coach Brian
Peterson, “we always try to win
the conference title, make it to
State and go farther than we did
last year.”
In order to obtain those goals,
Coach Peterson points out that
his team will need to replace
three good senior players from
last year’s roster; Trevor Nalan,
Jordan Savoy and Joey DeHart,
all starters whom were good re-
bounders, while Nalan also sur-
passed the 1,0000 point career
scoring mark.
West Hancock lists seven re-
turning letterwinners. In addi-
tion to Sonius and Paulus, Dylan
Eckels, Colton Ruter and Seth
Weiland all return with solid
playing experience.
The remaining two returners,
Ricardo Ibarra and Vicente Gon-
zalez, would have filled starting
spots for the Eagles but suffered
knee injuries in the football sea-
son which will keep them out of
basketball this year.
West Hancock will look to ju-
niors Nick Hunt, Glen Smith and

EAGLES RETURN SOLID PLAYERS The West Hancock girls’ basket-
ball team returns six solid athletes
to this year’s roster, as the Eagles
aim high for the West Division
Championship.
After posting an overall record
of just 6-16 two seasons ago and
a turn-around second half sea-
son for a 14-8 record last year, the
Eagles welcome back their lead-
ing rebounders and shooters this
year.
Senior guards Maria Gonzalez
and Emily Leerar along with se-
nior center Emma Chizek.
Junior, Faith Hammer, also a
guard joins her veteran team-
mates, along with sophomores
Kelly Leerar and Brigid Smith.
Coach Paul Sonius kicked off
his 9th season at the helm of the
Eagle program and looks to ju-
nior Anna Chizek and sopho-
mores Sydney Burgardt and Kate-
lyn Ohrt to be strong contributors
to this year’s season as well.
“Our goal is the West Division
Championship,” said Sonius,
“which we have a strong chance
for with our five top scorers back.
Our concern is finding a point
guard.’
Sydney Zamago, Kaylee Martin,
Jade Oberhelman, Natalie Lemon,
Sydney Hudspeth, Ryann Hagen,
Cassie Engstler, and Kelly Leerar
all round out the 2015-2016 roster.
Bryce Baker, Nicole Lampe and
Bri LeHoe are the Eagle’s manag-
ers, while Coach Sonius is assisted
by Kevin Wilson and Dale Hesley.

DEPTH AN UNDERSTATEMENT FOR GHV BOYSThis could be the most challeng-
ing season of GHV basketball coach
Joe Albertson’s career, but not for
reasons that typically haunt high
school coaches. Coach Albertson
will realistically be facing difficult
decisions every time he marks the
starting lineup in his scorebook as
the Cardinals possess an unusually
large pool of available talent. From
seasoned seniors to promising fresh-
men, an abundance of potential
contributors await their opportunity
to lead the Cards.
The Cardinals finished another
strong season a year ago, completing
the season at 17 – 7 while going 15
– 5 in North Iowa Conference play.
This year’s league schedule will have
a new flavor with the inauguration
of the Top of Iowa Conference. The
TOI west division will feature some
familiar NIC powerhouses such as
Lake Mills and Forest City while
adding competitive teams like Bish-
op Garrigan and North Union to the
mix. All things considered, the race
for the first Top of Iowa West tro-
phy promises to be a hotly contested
prize with as many as four or five
teams eyeing the title.
Albertson will be considering
four returning starters on the roster
when building his lineup. Leading
the group is Senior Sam Cataldo.
Cataldo with his 6’5” frame proved
to be a very versatile player for the
Cards last season, averaging 18
points per game, 10 rebounds per
game, and four blocked shots per
game on the way to earning All-
Substate post season honors. An-
other senior Harley Forry returns as
a starting guard after averaging four
points per game last season. Juniors
Holden Hutcheson and Johnny
O’Connor earned a spot in the start-
ing lineup as sophomores in 2014-
15. Hutcheson averaged eight points
per game while O’Connor netted
seven per contest.
Adding depth to the squad again
this year are senior returning letter
winners Payton James, Turner Al-
bertson and Ben Baumgard. James
caught the attention of NIC coaches
as a second-team all-conference
performer and was one of GHV’s
main perimeter scoring threats. Al-
bertson saw significant playing time
a year ago and is expected to play a
significant role this season as well.
James averaged 10 points per game
while fellow seniors Albertson and
Baumgard chipped in three and two
points per contest respectively.
The Cardinal JV squad had an
amazingly successful season, finish-
ing at 21 – 1 overall and a number
of players from that team will be
challenging the upperclassmen for
playing time. Albertson noted that
juniors Chase Theobald and Logan
Dalbeck along with sophomores
Connor Burke, Nick Joynt, Ryan
Meyers and Jack Van Dusseldorp
could all potentially work their way
into the lineup. Albertson is also
giving 6’7” freshman James Betz se-
rious consideration after seeing his
play in preseason drills.
Albertson along with his assistants
Kevin Stromer, Josh Banse, Greg
Hiemstra and Jake Young are look-
ing to see GHV’s combination of
experience, size and depth produce
a very competitive team. One ques-
tion mark could be whether or not
the Cards will be able to play defense
at a championship level. Albertson
and staff are hoping to see this large
group of talented individuals gel
into a cohesive team that can reach
their full potential.

REBUILDING NEEDED FOR GHV GIRLSFor the past three seasons, GHV
girls’ basketball coach Matt Er-
pelding has begun the year with
a strong nucleus of experienced
players on the roster. That trend
has come to an abrupt end for
the Cardinal coach as GHV will
have some big shoes to fill with a
relatively inexperienced group of
athletes. The Cards have enjoyed
three consecutive strong seasons
and Erpelding will need a few
newcomers to step up big in order
to continue as a league contender.
GHV finished third overall in
last years’ 11-team North Iowa
Conference. That league is now
history with the Cards competing
in their first season of Top of Iowa
Conference play. The TOI West
division will feature nine teams
including traditionally strong
programs like Forest City and
Bishop Garrigan. Topping last
season’s 16 – 8 overall record will
likely provide a strong challenge
to the youthful, inexperienced
Cardinal squad.
Leading the Cardinals this sea-
son will be junior forward Han-
nah Lau. Lau scored 11.9 points-
per-game with 6.7 rebounds last
year. Joining Hannah as a return-
ing starter is sophomore guard
Jillian Heitland. Heitland netted
6.7 ppg in her first season of var-
sity action while dishing out 27
assists on the year. Two addition-
al letter winners are hoping their
experience from last year will pay
dividends. Seniors Taryn Carolus
and Payton Bamrick saw limited
action in a majority of last sea-
son’s games and will look to work
their way into contributing roles.
Completing the roster for GHV
are four seniors, two juniors, a
sophomore and eight freshmen.
Erpelding noted that this par-
ticular group of players could be
one of the better perimeter shoot-
ing teams he’s coached. “Jillian
and Hannah had very produc-
tive seasons last year so hopefully
they can continue that this year.”
Erpelding expects to build some
pretty solid depth in several posi-
tions as the season progresses.
Coach Erpelding is concerned
about his squad’s lack of varsity
experience as the season opens.
“Our inexperience will show ear-
ly in the season while we feel out
what everyone’s role will be this
year. My biggest concern is the
lack of a confident point guard.
We have numerous girls who are
capable of developing into a qual-
ity point guard so it is a matter of
who wants to step up and fill that
role. Until that happens we will
struggle on the offensive end. We
also need to develop our defensive
fundamentals to become a solid
defensive team.”
In spite of the combination of
youth and inexperience, Erpeld-
ing is maintaining a positive out-
look. “I really like the group of
girls I have this year. There is no
doubt that we need a lot of girls
to step up and take their game to
the next level for us to be a com-
petitive team. I do know that this
group will work hard to make
that happen. The main thing is
that we all realize that we have a
lot of work to do to get to where
we want to be as a team. We just
need to keep reminding ourselves
that it is a marathon and not a
sprint. I believe by the end of the
season we will be a very competi-
tive team and will surprise some
teams come tournament time.”
Expected to challenge for the
TOI West title are Forest City,
Lake Mills and Bishop Garrigan.
“All three of those teams have a
great mix of youth, athleticism
and solid upperclassmen,” noted
Erpelding.
The Cardinals will face a stiff
challenge in their first contest
of the season as GHV travels to
Osage on November 24. League
play will begin the following week
at North Iowa.
