he new Day-Date is equipped with a new-generation movement,calibre 3255, entirely developed and manufactured byRolex for a superlative level of performance. Certifiedas a Swiss chronometer by COSC (Swiss OfficialChronometer esting Institute), it is tested a secondtime by Rolex after being cased to ensure that in

everyday use it satisfies Rolex’s criteria for precision, which are twice as exact ing as those for an officially

certified chronometer. Tis controlof the final precision of the assem-bled watch is carried out using amethodology and high-technology

equipment specially developed by Rolex. Tis self-winding mechanica l movement is at theforefront of the ar t of watchmaking. A consummatedemonstration of Rolex technology, with 14 patents,it offers fundamental gains in terms of precision,

developed and manufactured by Rolex for a super-lative level of performance. Certified as a Swiss




chronometer by COSC (SwissOfficial Chronometer esting

Institute), it is tested a second

time by Rolex after being cased

to ensure that in everyday use it satisfies Rolex’s

criteria for precision, which are twice as exacting as

those for an officially certified chronometer. Tis

control of the final precision of the assembled watch

is carried out using a methodology and high-

technology equipment special ly developed by Rolex.

Tis new self-winding mechanical movement is at

the forefront of the art of watchmaking. A consum-

mate demonstration of Rolex technology with14 patents, it offers fundamental gains in terms of

precision, power reserve, resist-ance to shocks and magnetism,

Tanks to a new barrel architec-

ture and the patented Chronergy escapement’s

Calibre 3255’s criteria for precisionin everyday wear are twice as

exacting as those for an officiallycertified chronometer. Its superla-tive accuracy is tested by Rolex after the movementhas been cased, using high-technology equipmentand an exclusive methodology that simulates theconditions in which a watch is actual ly worn.Its power reserve extends to three days (approxi-mately 70 hours), representing an increase of24 hours (or 50 per cent) compared to that ofthe previous generation. Tis means that the watch will easily continue to run over a weekend withoutneeding to be rewound.

Te movement is impervious to magnetic interferencebeyond the values which are encountered in daily life.

Te new movement’s resistance toshocks and its reliability have

been optimized at the level ofits overall architecture as well as

It is backed by 14 patents and anumber of innovative techno-logical solutions relating not only to component designbut also to processes involving new technologies thatpush back the limits of current production methods.More than 90 per cent of the movement parts havebeen redesigned and optimized, from those thatproduce and store energy (self-winding module andmainspring) to the regulating organ responsible forprecision (oscillator), the gear train and the escape-ment. Te escapement, which transmits the impulsesrequired to maintain the oscillator’s steady beat, is

enhanced by a major innovation patented by Rolexunder the name Chronergy.

Rolex engineers devised and

patented a new escapement thatoptimizes the efficiency of the

Swiss lever escapement, the standard in Swiss watchmaking, but which has seen only limited tech-nical evolution over the last 50 years. While favouredby watchmakers for its great reliability, the Swisslever escapement has always suffered from lowefficiency, relaying to the oscillator barely more thana third of the energy it receives from the mainspring via the gear train. Te resu lt of extensive research, the geometr y ofthe new Rolex Chronergy escapement improves

the efficiency of this key component by 15 per cent. Almost half of the increased power reser ve of




calibre 3255 can be ascribed to the escapementitself. Made of nickel-phosphorus, the Chronergyescapement is, furthermore, insensitive to magneticinterferences.

With this new-generation movement, Rolex sets anew level of chronometric precision with criteriasurpassing those of COSC (Swiss OfficialChronometer esting Institute). Rolex has devel-oped a new methodology and high-technologyequipment to test the precision of its SuperlativeChronometers with tolerances that are twice asexacting as those for official certification, andunder conditions that simulate the wearer’s real-life

experience. Tese exclusive chronometric tests com-plement the official COSC certification, to which all

Rolex movements continue to be submittedsystematically, and are carried out not on the move-ments alone, but on the assembled watches after themovements have been cased.

A threefold enhancement in the poise of the oscillatorbalance wheel was made possible thanks to precision

manufacturing. High-technology procedures arealso used, such as LiGA (micromanufacturing

by electroforming) to produce

the paramagnetic pallet forkand escape wheel of the newChronergy escapement.

Calibre 3255 benefits from new, updated aesthetics,both in the shape and arrangement of the bridges as well as in their meticulous, traditional decoration.
