Ponderings of Patience

Shepherding Groups

As I have been mentioning in

Sunday morning messages over

the past couple of weeks, we are

re-enacting Shepherding Groups

in the life of Barry Christian

Church. Our congregation has

been randomly divided into 14

groups of approximately 10 to

11 families and a leader and co-

leader has been assigned to each

group. The purpose of the Shep-

herding Groups is for each

leader, who will serve for a six

month period, to keep in touch

with the families of their respec-

tive group by a once-a-month

telephone call, and by also con-

veying information concerning

special events, or seeking

prayers for exceptional concerns

that may arise in the fellowship

of our congregation.

As I described in my message on

Sunday, April 17th, Jesus, as he

was about to depart from the

Last Supper and make his jour-

ney to the cross; he had impor-

tant parting words to share with

his disciples and thus with sub-

sequent followers throughout the

generations. Jesus said in John

13:34: “I give you a new com-

mandment: love one another.”

We explored how the “new”

commandment didn’t mean

“completely different”, but

rather in the Greek language,

simply conveyed a “renewal” or

a “fresh emphasis” of an under-

standing the Disciples would

have already understood.

Throughout the Old Testament,

God’s people had been in-

structed to: “love the Lord your

God with all your heart, and with

all your soul and with all your

strength” (Deuteronomy 6:5) and

had also been instructed to “love

your neighbor as yourself

(Leviticus 19:18).

Unfortunately, however, through

the centuries these commands

had been narrowed so that fol-

lowers were inclined to believe

that only God and those of like-

mindedness within the realm of

their own neighboring believers

were all the folks they needed to

be concerned about. Yet, with

his renewed command, Jesus

was actually emphasizing that

his disciples were to love “one

another” despite the differences

between them, because it was

Christ’s love for them that bound

them together as one.

In that message of April 17th, we

also emphasized that the word

Jesus used for “love” in John

13:34, in the Greek language is:

Agape. It simply means that we

are to “seek the highest good”

for others in our midst.

(Ponderings of Patience, continued from front page)

Several people in our congregation under the leadership of Lana Whitton, as our Vice Chairperson of

the Board, and assisted by Edna Williams, have expressed the need for all of us as a congregation to

seek ways to be more closely connected, and the Biblical images of Jesus as the Good Shepherd (John

10:11 and 14) as well as his fresh emphasis upon “seeking the highest good” for others in the midst of

our diversity, calls all of us to be diligent in our efforts to be closely connected and concerned for one

another as members of the body of Christ.

By the time you read this edition of The Barry Good News, many of you may have likely been con-

tacted by the shepherd of your Shepherding Group as we will be striving to re-initiate this intentional

process of staying connected in the life of Barry Christian Church. But if you have

any questions or comments, please don’t hesitate to give me, Lana or Edna a call as

all of us strive to fulfill Christ’s command to “seek the highest good” for God’s

children in whose lives we are a part.

Blessings to each of you!

Pastor Dennis

Barry Christian Church Honored As the

“Faith Partner of the Year” for 2015

The Northland Assistance Center on Saturday, April 16th, honored Barry Christian Church as their

“Faith Partner of the Year” for 2015 at their Annual Banquet held at the Embassy Suites Airport Hotel.

At the presentation, the director of the Center, Rita Pearce, recognized our congregation’s consistent

monthly contributions to the center’s ministries ever since 2004.

We are grateful for the diligent efforts of the Northland Assistance Center in meeting needs for hous-

ing, utilities, medical and a myriad of other concerns that arise for people in the Northland. We are

also grateful for the leadership that Freddie Nichols has given as one of the Center’s board members

since the mid-90’s; as we are also grateful to Don and Judy Thomas and to all the members of our

congregation’s Outreach Committee for their faithful attention to the outreach concerns of the North-

land. Every month, our church’s Outreach Committee meets and distributes 10% of the church’s con-

tributions as a tithe to the various causes in the Disciple’s Mission Fund and to a significant number of

ministries in the Northland and beyond.

Thanks for everyone’s support of our church’s outreach ministries, including the Northland Assistance

Center!

“As we lift our hearts in prayer,

dear Lord, may we receive all

the benefits of your grace…”

The Barry Kids want to thank you for getting up early on Easter Sunday morning and helping them begin the Easter celebration. Thank you all, for your love and support, and encouragement, and for being the role models, both within your families at home and with your Church family here at Barry. Who’d have thought we’d see snow on Easter morning? It didn’t stick or accumulate, but it did add a strangely beautiful twist to our Easter Sunrise Service! I wanted to share some thoughts about your youth group that I also shared dur-ing Sunrise Service. I heard that Mark Twain once said, “When a child is born, put him in a barrel. Leave a hole big enough for air and water. When he be-comes a teenager, plug up the hole!” Have any of you parents, besides me, found yourself looking for a barrel when your kids became teenagers? I’ve learned over the years that I do not know how to raise the perfect child. I don’t know any one-size-fits-all methods for parenting. I’ve always enjoyed the definition of insanity you see floating around the internet…you know, the one that says “insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results”. Meaning that if what you’re doing isn’t working, then change it. I used to think that teaching was a one-way street. The teacher teaches, the student learns. The par-ent talks, the child listens. That seems like such a 1950’s Leave it to Beaver mentality, doesn’t it? (Who remembers the Beaver’s classroom, where all the kids responded “Yes Miss Landers” or “No Miss Landers in unison?) I never got very good at convincing other people that I’m any smarter than they are. And I’m be-coming convinced that, in many ways, the kids are smarter them me. And I’ve learned that, if I listen to the children, I can learn from them. Let me give you a few examples… During a Youth Group meeting some months ago, we were com-piling a prayer list. One of our youth asked for prayers dealing with an older sibling. Apparently some harsh words had been exchanged, and there were some hard feelings between the siblings. So our youth asked for prayers to help cope with what was going on. But he didn’t want just his name on the prayer list—he also wanted the name of his older sibling, on that prayer list. He said “I know she’s going thru a lot too”. Well it turns out there’s a nice little scripture about this…Matthew 5:43-45, which says “You have heard that it was said, ‘You shall love your neighbor, and hate your enemy.’ But I say to you, love your enemies, and pray for those who persecute you”. Our youth may not have known about that scripture, but he certainly exemplified it…and he was quite a role model to me, as someone who was “living the Bible”. I have other examples from Vacation Bible School…there were children there who told me things about the Bible stories I was sharing with them. They pointed out small details that had a significant impact to the story. Details I had not known…so I had to go look them up…and the kids were right! I felt like I was teaching a roomful of little disciples that week. I felt like THEY should have been teaching ME. While I believe that Barry Christian Church had some role in these children’s moral and spiritual development, I also must acknowledge the greatest influence is not the church, it’s the family. You, their parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles, caring friends…are the most important role models these children could have (besides Jesus himself). When you try to live your life as Jesus instructed, your kids will notice. So, thank you for bringing your children to Barry Christian Church, so we can also learn from them. We’re getting ready for a great VBS! This year, we are using Barnyard Roundup. Children will learn that Jesus

gathers us together! They’ll look into the Bible, God’s Holy Word, and explore five Bible accounts where Jesus is

with us and abundantly provides for all our needs. He protects and saves us—now in this world and forever too!

Our VBS will be held July 11th -15th, 9:00am - Noon.

Friday at Noon we will have a closing program and picnic including a Petting Zoo!

It is our prayer that God has VBS in His plan for your life! We know Jesus will work through YOU at VBS. Would

you prayerfully consider serving in VBS?

We have a place for everyone, if you can volunteer for 5 days or a couple of hours we have a spot for you!

If you would like to serve in VBS, there are a couple of ways to join our team a sign up form in the sanctuary foyer,

call the church (816-436-0462), and you may contact me I would be happy to answer any questions for you.

Thanks for taking to time to pray and consider this request!

We hope you’ll join us as we gather together in Jesus’ saving love at Barnyard Roundup VBS!
