Robert’s Reflections
Church Loyalty Month
Through the work of the Membership Committee we have declared
December to be Church Loyalty Month. Why a Church Loyalty month
and what is it? Well, mostly it is a way of reconnecting with each other
and with our faith. The timing is important too.
◊ Advent begins on December 2
◊ It is the beginning of our new church year
◊ Newness brings the possibility of resolution
◊ What a more perfect resolution could there be than to be present in
worship?
The point is not to make this a demanding thing, but a desirable thing.
It will provide a great opportunity to be present through the wonderful
time of our faith leading up to Christmas. Since church attendance
enriches our lives why not commit to being here each of the Sunday’s of
December that you are able.
Is there someone you haven’t seen here in a while? Why not invite
them back? Sometimes we just get out of the habit and need a gentle
nudge. Can you be the one that provides that invitation?
One more thing – each family that is present on December 2nd, the
first Sunday of Advent, will receive a special gift! Tis the season of gift
giving. Your gift awaits your arrival!
Love, Bob
Great News! We have reserved
beautiful large Christmas
Poinsettias from Penrod's
Greenhouse this year. You won't
have to go traipsing out to the
store and then over to the church
to drop off a poinsettia.
Convenient for you, a lovely way
to enhance the Sanctuary and
honor a loved one.
The cost is $14.00 Please
write the check out to Barry
Christ ian Church (memo
poinsettia), include a note with
the information as to who it is
from and for whom the plant(s)
is in memory or honor of and put
it in an envelope and place in the
offering plate. You may place
your orders for poinsettias
through Gail in the Church
Office during the week. You will
be able to take your plant home
after the second service on

“Operation Christmas Child”
November will be here before you know it, so we wanted to
remind you we will be participating with Operation Christmas
Child.
There are plastic shoe boxes and brochures available at
the back.
Just sign for how many boxes you want to fill and check off
your name when you bring them back. You can use your own
shoeboxes if you prefer.
This Christmas season, a needy child overseas will receive
your shoe box, along with Christian literature in his or her own
language.
There are also Videos and cd's that can be borrowed on back
table, or log in to web page to view . www.samaritanspurse.org
Still have questions? Call Rita Knopf @ 436-9987 or email
I hope you will be a part of this exciting opportunity to share
God's love with a hurting child.

CHURCH HISTORIAN’S NOTE: CHEVIS TAVERN
(The following article is drawn from a number of available sources)
Thomas Minor Chevis was born probably in Virginia, lived in Kentucky, and was an
early pioneer in this community. He was first associated with the Christian Church in
Liberty, that church being founded in 1837. There he served as Deacon. In 1839 his church
and another in Liberty resolved certain differences and formed a union between them.
Later he came to Barry and is listed as one of the Elders of our church in a roster of members
from 1860. He died in 1864.
In 1839 he purchased the tavern, or inn, at the town of Barry. The tavern had been
built as a trading post by George Burnett and his two sons in 1820. By 1839 stage coaches
were operating between Liberty and Leavenworth, and stopped at the Tavern for meals, and
sometimes overnight. In 1841 a mail route was established from St. Louis to Weston, and
again stops were made at Barry. The Tavern was the center of social activity and apparently
the exchange point for news from East and West.
The tavern was a one and a half story log building, constructed in what was known as
a “dog-trot” layout. In other words, two rooms connected by an open but roofed porch. As
time passed, other rooms were added to this original structure until there were a total of
eight.
In the early 1960’s the tavern was de-constructed and moved to Fleming Park in
Jackson County, called Missouri Town, 1855. During the dismantling and excavation of the
old site, several interesting things were found. Under the slave cabin dirt floor was found a
powder horn full of powder, as well as several old dishes. Also was found an old album
filled with pictures of Native Americans. Into the logs of the structure were six holes, cut
four inches square, which were to be used as rifle ports in case of attack.
The upper floor of the Tavern was used during the Civil War to hide articles and even
Confederate soldiers. In front of the building was a turn-around for the stage coaches, and in
back were the chicken house, smokehouse and privy. Also in the complex were an ash
hopper for making lye, a fire pit, and an area for a large garden and tobacco patch.
Today this building has been re-created in the Park and looks the same as it would
have looked when it stood south of Barry Church in the early days.
This drawing of the
Samuel-Chevis Tavern is
probably by Sidney Moore.

Reminder: order your “scrip” gift cards and help support the church
Here’s how the Scrip program works:
The Scrip Center buys gift cards from retailers at a discount.
Our members buy the gift cards and pay full face value. They shop at
the participating retailers and redeem the gift cards for full face value.
The discount amount is revenue earned for the church without
additional cost to you.
To place an order:
Pick up and complete an order form on the foyer table. Attach a check payable to Barry Christian Church
and either hand it to the Scrip coordinator at Barry - Betty Rega - or drop it in the locked box in the
Narthex (by the elevator.)
The Scrip coordinator will place the order online on Sunday PM and deliver to you the following Sunday.

We have received a letter from SPC Alrid Reid. He is 23 years old. He writes:
Dear Edna Williams and Barry Christina Church,
I just want to say thank you from all of us here at COP 2 BOK. Whenever we get a package, it
keeps us motivated and increases our morale. It is not easy being here. It is very dangerous
and rough here, but we are trying to stay positive. Thanks again for everything and we truly
appreciate what you are doing. Keep praying for us.
SPC REID
We are going to be mailing boxes for Christmas. Christmas cards, those you write to
them or some they can send their loved ones will be appreciated. If there is anything else you
want sent for the Christmas season, please put in the TROOPS box in the entrance by the elevator. Thank you
for all you do. Please remember that our soldiers put their lives in jeopardy every day for us to enjoy the
freedom we have here.
God bless you and yours,
Edna Williams

Since 2008, the Friday after
Thanksgiving has been dubbed the
National Day of Listening. The nonprofit
group StoryCorps encourages people to
spend an hour recording an interview
with a loved one, rather than battle mall
crowds.
Dave Isay began StoryCorps in 2003 as
an oral-history project, based on the
simple idea that everyone has an
authentic story worth hearing. “This is
about nothing but the generosity of
listening,” Isay says. “When you’re
listening to [the stories] of everyday peo-
ple — with their acts of kindness and
courage that we don’t take the time to
honor — you’re walking on holy
ground.”
As you gather with family and friends
this Thanksgiving, remember to keep
your ears open!
