H ow Would You vote Today?
If you were asked today, should we keep the doors open and keep
Barry Christian Church going, or should we close down, what would
your vote be?
“In the early 1940’s the old white church stood tall and proud even if she was old
she was beautiful. Her doors were always open to anyone to come in, pray and
serve Jesus and his mission. In 1940 they were about to close her doors for the
last time because there was only about $2.72 in the General fund. A light bill was due, heat bill need to be
paid and the minister’s salary had to be met.”
I am told that the vote was to close the doors, but the young people said, “NO! They went to work to save the
church from closing by having a big meal and inviting others to come and help. They were so successful, they
saved the church and kept the doors open to serve Christ and give comfort and support to those in need. The
church family was so thankful for God helping them through this tough time, they have made it an annual
Turkey Dinner Event.
Now, how would you vote today? Would you vote to close the doors to those in need? Would you say “No” to
Jesus and the Great Commission? There is a dedicated group of 25 who are coming each week and fixing for
the annual event. It is inspiring to see their excitement.
We are voting each Sunday to close when we don’t show up to worship, serve and give our tithes and
offerings.
In 1940, a small but dedicated group said, “We vote to save Barry Christian Church and we willing to work and
give to save the church.” (Continued on page 2)

(continued from page 1)
Every year since then, folks have done their part, not just 2 days per year, but every
day to save our church for Sunday and every week since 1940.
Now, you can vote by your action or lack of action.
We hope all who belong and love Barry Christian Church will come back and be a part
of transformation and renewal and positive changes.
Last Sunday, we had a marvelous event in hosting the 5 Starr jazz Band of 30 young
people between the ages of 12 to 21. The music was super and enjoyed by those
who came. A free will offering was taken to purchase a Personal Energy Transporta-
tion for a child without legs. Over $603 was received. The Jazz band donated their
services to our church, but the church desired to assist the Jazz band in their ministry
by donating $200.00 to help their mission.
Two big events are coming soon. You can help with :
1. Trunk or Treat this Saturday, October 25th for all children and parents from 4-6
pm in our front parking lot
2. Turkey Dinner dates are Thursday, November 6 & Friday November 7 from 4-8 pm
Your help & vote is needed to keep our church family going strong.
If you would be asked to vote today, how would you vote by your action, attendance
and giving? Something to think about.
Yours in His Service,
Pastor Bob

Building #3
Each time Barry Christian Church expanded sufficient means were available to build a new structure and continue worship services. The increase in size of each new structure gives us an idea of the corresponding growth in attendance and church activities of those times. Hard work, good planning, and generous giving were all amply displayed each time a new building was projected.
Below are several old pictures from our heritage of the transition between the old church built in 1860, and the construction of a new one in 1950.
This photo shows the 2nd church structure at Barry
from the southeast. The windows have been removed
prior to full demolition. Taken about 1950
This view is from the southwest, after
the roof has been removed. The bell
tower is partially hidden by the exist-
ing trees. The building in the faint
background was the old parsonage.
This photo shows some proud
faces in front of the west wall
of the 3rd church structure,
about 1950. Note the sturdy
brick buttresses of the new
building. Some of the people
pictured are Judy Reber, Shirley
Turner, Dorcas Allen, Stella
Carrell, Viola Dotson, and one
of the men on the roof is Elmer
Reber.

A message from our Family Life Director – Jim Frentrop
I am amazed at all the details being tended to by so many folks, in the work of children and youth ministry. For years I’ve been at Barry and played some small roles, but only recently have I begun seeing the bigger picture. While being a fairly small church when compared to some in the area, we have some big hearted people doing some phenomenal work. Until recently I was unaware of the magnitude of work being done to care for the spiritual upbringing of our children and youth. I’ll just name a few here, knowing there are many more I hope to recognize in the future. Last Sunday, I had the privilege of attending Children’s Church with Gina Schaer. What an experience, and what memories, being in the same room as
when I was a child in Junior Church with Estherbelle McFarland. Gina shares her wisdom and love of God with the children following the children’s sermon in first service, and Wanda Eacret does the same during second service. Two very dedicated women with messages of love and hope for our children. Then there is Anna Eacret, shepherding the Youth Group with enthusiasm and unmatched commitment. All of these folks manage more details than I ever imagined, and do so with the deepest patience and love for our children, and for God. I am honored to know each of them, humbled by the work they do, and so grateful to them for their commitment to the children and youth at Barry. My life is enriched by the lessons they teach me and the examples they set. And that’s only a portion of the workers being the hands for God at Barry. I haven’t even begun to speak of the Sunday School teachers, or the choir director and organist, who make the Sunday School hour so vibrant for our children. Maybe next newsletter. In Christian love and peace, Jim

BARRY CHRISTIAN CHURCH 175TH ANNIVERSARY
The Barry Christian Church 175th Anniversary is on Sunday, April 26, 2015.
The theme is “Remember When……!” We want to let everyone know about this upcoming event and
ongoing activities in 2015. Anyone who is a member and anyone who attended Barry Christian Church,
was married at Barry Christian Church or anyone who is acquainted with the Barry area’s history and would
like to attend, we invite you to come. We want to make this celebration about Barry
Christian Church and the Barry area as complete a story as possible. If you have any pictures,
memorabilia, newspaper articles, stories told by your ancestors, or anything of interest around the period from 1800’s – 2015, please contact Barry Christian
Church. If you could share them with us, we could tell a more complete story. We will return anything you want back to you. We would also like to have your addresses, phone numbers, or e-mail addresses to
communicate with you.
