9 th November, 2017 Dear Families, Francis Sullivan, C.E.O of the Truth, Justice and Healing Commission was a keynote speaker at a forum held at Emmaus Catholic Primary School last week. Following Francis’ address were presentations from key leaders Eileen, Fr Peter and John Crowley who shared their insights into the contributions that their communities have made. Dear Families,

Francis Sullivan, C.E.O of the Truth, Justice and

Healing Commission was a keynote speaker

at a forum held at Emmaus Catholic Primary

School last week. Many members of our

school community attended the event and

considered how we, the parents, staff and

parishioners of St Alipius Parish, can help

shape a path to engage young people in

their faith journey within a Catholic context.

Following Francis’ address were presentations

from key leaders Eileen, Fr Peter and John

Crowley who shared their insights into the

contributions that their communities have

made.

The forum provided a means to continue the dialogue about the crucial role we all

play in the shaping of our Church. The significance of the words and deeds of Jesus is

as important as ever as we strive to find ways of living in peaceful community with one

another and to find ways of healing and reconciliation. Such an outcome comes with

people living the Gospel in simple, ordinary ways and by connecting with each other

and with God.

In a poem called the The Lantern Bearers, Rosemary Sutcliffe writes:

It may be that night will close over us in the end, but I believe that morning will come

again.

Morning always grows out of darkness, though maybe

not for the people who saw the sun go down.

We are the Lantern Bearers my friend: for us to keep

something burning, to carry what light we can

forward into the darkness and the wind*.

Let your light shine,

Roxanne

Athletics Carnival

A great day was had by all during our Athletics Carnival at Llanberries last week. Allana

Kane and Lauren Morris lead us to enjoy of day of fun and exercise as students strove

to do their personal best. While the Red team scored the most points during the day,

the focus was on participation and involvement. It was great to see so many individual

successes, both big and small. Thanks to the many volunteers who helped out to make

the event a great success.

Aboriginal Leaders Visit This term our Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students have been exploring the

issues of identity and leadership. On Wednesday afternoon we welcomed Jon Kanoa

and Aaron Clarke, two leaders from the Ballarat Aboriginal community, to come and

speak with our students. Jon is the Director of Family Support Services at the Ballarat &

District Aboriginal Co-operative and is also father to Ashleigh (Grade 2). Aaron is the

Program Manager for AIME (Australian Indigenous Mentoring Experience) and has

been delivering the AIME programme to our 5/6 students over the past 2 years.

Our students brainstormed some fabulous questions to ask our guests. They included:

Who inspires you? What was school like for you? What did you want to be when you

were little and did you get there or did you change your mind? Jon and Aaron gave

our students great insight into what it means to be leaders in this community. They

spoke about the importance of being proud of who you are, despite the struggles and

challenges you might face. They encouraged the students to embrace difficult tasks

and be prepared to fail. Failing at different things has helped them become the

leaders they are today. They also said that learning about their culture is an ongoing

process. There is still so much they don’t know and that is why they enjoy speaking with

young people and learning together.

Thank you for visiting us Jon and Aaron, we look forward to learning more alongside

you!
