The origins of Carnival• Carnival comes from the religious calendar. Originally, it

starts the day of Epiphany and ends on Ash Wednesday. The end of the carnival is marked by Mardi Gras. I’s the most important day of this period. The date changes every year because it hangs from the date of Easter. Indeed, there are exactly 40 days between the end of the Carnival and the day of Easter, which are the 40 days of Lent.

• Mardi Gras (Fat Tuesday) is called so because it is the day company where people end up fat they have left before going to Lent (one of eating fast fat). We take this opportunity to make donuts, bugnes and pancakes. In contrast to Lent (Carême), Carnival is a period of joy and freedom. Rules of normal life are suspended and everyone does a little as he’s wrapping it. Carnival is the world to somehow: we way, we eat everything what we want, we go out singing in the streets. Some cities have big carnivals : Dunkerque, Nice, …

• Highlights of the carnival are what we call « fat days » : Sundays, Mondays and Tuesdays. There is an opposition between brand period the pomp of fat and period of abstinence of Lent. It’s why every year, a person appointed Carnival returns, surrounded all his troops, to bring abundance and wealth. And every year he died, burnst or drowned. In some regions, the character named Carnaval Bonhomme is M. Winter since the end of the carnival falls almost same time that the end of the winter.

• For Mardi Gras, a number of people dress up, often known and distinctive character to be recognized by all. Many of them choose to be a character from the Italian Commedia dell'Arte as Pierrot, Harlequin and Punchinello ...
