PRINCIPAL’S REPORT

I wish to congratulate and welcome Ms Bosworth-Waite and Mr Fearnley who last week were appointed to the Woy Woy campus as permanent Math teachers through merit selection.

The flu season is upon us and has affected not only student attendance but also staff attendance. The campus like all schools on the coast has been struggling to cover all absent staff with casual teachers resulting in uncovered classes and at times an inconsistent learning environment. We endeavour to cover every absent staff member but on some days this has proven to be impossible. I ask you to consider this if you are contacting us to question why your child did not have a teacher on a specific lesson.

Yr 10 parents please encourage your child to attend the Careers Expo that will be held on Tuesday 27th June. This is an important day in the senior subject selection process and gives students an opportunity to meet and listen to many speakers across a diverse range of careers.

Is your child sleep deprived? Some parents will be able to give a definitive answer on this quite easily. Others may not be really sure. So what are the symptoms of sleep deprivation in children? Research has identified the following as some of the symptoms that are common among students who are sleep deprived: Moodiness and irritability.

Temper tantrums.

The tendency to emotionally ‘explode’ at the slightest provocation.

Over-activity and hyperactive behaviour.

Reluctance to get out of bed in the morning and often late to school.

Grogginess when they wake up in the morning and very hard to ‘get going’.

Sleep deprivation and school success are very much related. Again research has identified that sleep loss can cause a range of schooling problems, including:

Poor behaviour and poor concentration.

Problems with impulse control leading to risk-taking behaviours, more likely in chronically sleep-deprived teenagers.

An increased risk of disorders such as depression and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), associated in teenagers with sleep problems.

Poor marks and grades and an increase in negative feeling towards school and education.

PRINCIPAL’S REPORT

Daniel Hurst writing in The Sydney Morning Herald recently noted that students are getting less and less sleep which is having significant effects on their, and their class mate’s, learning. Daniel cited the latest TIMSS (Trends in International Mathematics & Science Study) International Results in Mathematics which suggest about 67 per cent of Australian students were in classrooms where the teachers reported instruction was hampered by some students suffering lack of sleep. This result was a part of a sleep research carried out in 50 countries around the world involving more than 900,000 students. Interestingly only four of the 50 countries had a higher level of sleep deprivation in the study than Australia, led by the US with 73 per cent. When I look into any classroom at any time during the day there are many signs of students suffering sleep deprivation. Teachers make comments every day about students who have very poor concentration and those who spend most of the time yawning or with their head on the desk. Lack of sleep is not merely a learning issue, it's a massive well-being issue for children. Mental health authorities have long identified lack of sleep as having a negative impact on children's general well-being. And as any parent can attest to, tired kids are genuinely more grisly, short-tempered, and even unpleasant to be around.

MR WARREN Dear Parents, Staff, Students and Community Members,

Firstly can I say thank you to all the Staff, Students, Parents and Community Members who have warmly welcomed me to the Woy Woy Campus, it is exciting to see so many familiar faces. I would also like to wish Mr Macey (gained a promotion to Principal in Hunter Area) and Miss Smith (promoted for an unknown period to Regional Office) well for the future and thank them for their support.

Term 2 has moved quickly and there are many significant events towards the end of the Term and early into Term 3. All students are have recently completed a range of assessment tasks, including Half Yearly Examinations and the majority of our students have achieved wonderful results. Moving into Term 3, students who have high attendance rates, are settled, prepared to spend time on revision and study, seek assistance from their teachers and work in harmony with all members of the school community have a greater opportunity to meet their goals and achieve their optimum outcomes. Can I encourage all students to constantly strive to improve!

Reports Recently I have had the pleasure of reading all Year 10 and Year 11 Reports, it is pleasing to note how co-operative and driven our students are. Congratulations to the majority of our school.

Uniform Uniform Uniform – Can I remind all students that Brisbane Water Secondary College is a proud school that adheres to the Uniform Policy. We have recently blitzed Years 10 and 11 regarding this and we would seek the support of everyone in the wearing of the School Uniform – Watch this space!

For all students - a timely reminder that for you to successfully complete your current year of school and move to the next - attendance, diligence (completion and clearing of all N Warnings) and application are the three critical aspects. Your Teachers will all sign you out of their respective subject at the end of the year indicating you have completed all work and tasks to the best of your ability. SHOPPING BEFORE SCHOOL – A reminder that students should come directly to school each day, only students with Parent permission should be entering our local shops and shopping centres before school.

Mr. S. Warren Deputy Principal

LEADER OF THE PACK

Congratulations to both our Junior and Senior students! The production team would like to thank everyone who auditioned! The hit Broadway musical retrospective celebrates the life and times of Ellie Greenwich, whose doo-wop sounds skyrocketed to the top of the 60s charts. The story of Ellie’s rise to fame and fortune is punctuated with the virtual hit parade of her music: “Chapel of Love,” “Da Doo Ron Ron,” “Be My Baby,” “Hanky Panky,” Do Wah Diddy Diddy,” “And Then He Kissed Me,” and, of course, the title song, “Leader of the Pack.” Can't wait to get started! Watch this space for more updates!!!!

LEADER OF THE PACK

Want some help on how to deal with teen issues?

I am often asked what to do about raising teenagers and about specific problems in the home. This is the best opportunity I have seen in a while as you can do it in the comfort of your own home.

An Australian-first service that provides busy parents of teenagers with free, confidential one-on-one parenting help has been launched by digital mental health service ReachOut Australia. Delivered using a mix of online and pre-booked phone sessions, ReachOut Parents Coaching gives parents the flexibility to easily access support from anywhere in the country

Any parent who is worried about their relationship with their teenager, or concerned about their teenager’s wellbeing or behaviour, can access up to four phone sessions with a professional parenting coach as well as a range of personalised digital resources. Parents looking to better understand their teenager or wanting general parenting support would also benefit from the service.

All phone sessions are delivered by trained professionals from The Benevolent Society – experts in helping families build strong relationships – and tailored to an individual’s specific goals and situation. This means that parents will receive practical strategies they can put to use immediately after their first call.

‘Raising happy and healthy teenagers today can be a minefield. This is the first generation of parents facing issues around technology and social media in addition to the age old challenges such as bullying, drinking, sex and relationships. We also know that around one in four young people are likely to have a mental illness.

‘At the same time, today’s parents are working longer hours, making it even harder to access support during the week.

‘Because this is a digital-based service, parents have the flexibility to schedule sessions at times that suit them – whether at home or during a lunch break. Booking a session is as easy as buying a cinema ticket online.’

Matt Gardiner, Executive Director Child and Family Services, The Benevolent Society, adds: “We believe that parents and caregivers are the most important person in a teenager’s life. We provide parents and caregivers with effective parenting strategies and tools to strengthen their relationship with their teenager and feel as though they are back in control. This service is an excellent way to assist parents in their own time. It’s confidential, it’s available to them when they’re available and it helps parents create a plan with the coach, putting them on the path to communicating well with their teenagers.”

Through the ReachOut Parents Coaching Program, parents will be able to access up to four free sessions with support from a Benevolent Society coach, who will help parents to: recognise what’s working with their parenting and what isn’t, discuss parenting strategies, develop a parenting action plan, book in additional coaching sessions if you need to

The new service is the newest addition to ReachOut Parents, which provides evidence based digital self-help, tools and parenting peer support that parents can access around the clock.

TECHNICAL ENTERTAINMENT

This has been a busy term

Our Year 11 Entertainment students have begun in earnest and are enjoying the diversity of sound engineering. The students have operated a variety of audio consoles and actually enjoy creating doof doof. They also attended YC Media over a two week period and produced one hour on air segments that were broadcast on COAST FM and also participated in video production shoots. All students enjoyed the experience. Their work placement activities are real, valuable and many students are looking now at careers in this industry. They also performed technical operations for the ANZAC Ceremony. The students technical prowess was on show and they did not disappoint. Youth in Performing Arts YIPA. Two students, Liam Hylton-Evans and Amelia Newell-Close participated in six program days at Laycock Street Theatre, providing technical support to the very talented Central Coast students. As a result, Amelia received a cheque of $500 as an encouragement award in a technical support role from the Gary Jackson, Producer of the event. Congratulations to both students

ART CAMP @ COCKATOO ISLAND

After sunrise painting and camp style breakfast we had ferry ride to circular quay, quick visit to the opera house. Saw the World Press photography exhibition at the State Library which was very confronting and moving. Lunch at Pitt St mall. Art activities at darling harbour and will be visiting the maritime museum this afternoon followed by vivid! What a excursion and fabulous students!

OUR EX - STUDENTS

Recently students from our Year 12 Exploring Early Childhood class attended an excursion at Umina Kids Club. At least 4 of our ex students are working there, with Ebanee Butler in the running for NSW Trainee of the Year.

Year 10 are recently enjoyed an inspirational Aboriginal performance by Nigel Millgate

INDIGENOUS STUDIES

Our year 12 Screen and Media students have been busy this term programming and installing our new shipment of digital lighting systems. I am very proud to announce that we no longer support power intensive lighting systems. Our new lights incorporate high efficiency, low consumption LED technology. We have a low carbon footprint and are lean and green. They are also

gathering and producing a series of video shots that will be displayed later on in the year. Our year 12 Entertainment students were responsible for the Europe presentation recently viewed in the hall. Students were taken from their comfort zones and placed in areas they were not familiar with, yet still produced a wonderful show. The Entertainment specialisation students are currently designing components for the musical production Leader of the Pack. Watch this space With the musical on track next term, the introduction of new digital audio and

lighting equipment, challenges will be grasped by all TEPA students and I’m sure will achieve outstanding success. This holiday period, seven students will be providing technical support in our school hall for CoastQuest. More about this next term including a visit to recording and television studios.
