Professional development requires lifelong learning. Badging has become a viable

method to document what is accomplished through career opportunities that

extend beyond earning a degree. Badging provides a digital transcript and highlights

a learning narrative that makes competencies, accomplishments and connections

more visible. Attend this session to learn more about the importance of badging as

a signal for continued learning and involvement within professional communities.

After attending this session, attendees will:

• Define badging within a professional development context

• Understand the importance of badging for your digital professional portfolio

• Examine a broader perspective for badging as validated in higher education and

corporate learning

• Discover how to engage in badging at EDUCAUSE as you build your career in

higher ed IT

As a senior IT leader at a large institution, “Sheryl” is advanced in her career. She

has been an active member of the EDUCAUSE community for a number of years.

This year she is completing her term as faculty member for an EDUCAUSE Institute

Program, for which she earned the mentor/thought leader badge. She also served

on the Connect program committee. In helping to build that program, she

completed more than 25 proposal reviews, earning the proposal reviewer plus

badge. These community service badges speak to Cheryl’s professional commitment

and engaged service.

Sheryl is an expert with enterprise IT systems and regularly presents to share her

knowledge. However, Sheryl is not an expert in analytics . She knew she needed

more depth there. On Monday afternoon, she attended a pre‐conference seminar

on analytics. This badge, coupled with badges from two ELI online seminars on

analytics, help to demonstrate that Sheryl remains serious about continued

learning. She

is

setting

a great

example

for

her

staff

in

the

process.



“Jim” is relatively early in his career in instructional technology at a community

college. He has found it difficult to get funding for travel. Fortunately, there are

other ways to engage in the community as he strives to make himself known.

Jim was a volunteer proposal reviewer for the ELI Annual Meeting last fall. He

learned a lot through the process and became acquainted with the community as

he earned a proposal reviewer badge. This community service badge signals that

he’s engaged in the profession.

Through the course of the year, he’ll complete three ELI online events focused on

faculty development – the spring focus session, an online seminar and a short

course. In each case, there are assignments, group work or projects required to

earn the subject matter expert badge. In following through on the entire program,

he’ll also earn the Faculty Development stacked badge. This badge acknowledges

his efforts

for

a sustained

learning

experience

and

deeper

dive

into

this

subject

area.

Jim is hoping to attend the ELI Annual Meeting in February. He has already

submitted a proposal to present. If accepted, he’ll build a case for travel funds

based in part on his track record of engagement with the association. Jim’s badges

are visual symbols of his priorities and commitment to professional development.
