Dr. Rainer Gruessner was appointed Chairman of the Department of Surgery at the University of
Arizona in 2007. He is one of the leading transplant surgeons in the world. Educated and
trained in Europe, Asia and the United States, Dr. Gruessner has developed many transplant surgery
techniques that continue to save lives today.
Dr. Rainer Gruessner has overseen the evolution of the Department of Surgery at the University
of Arizona into a position as one of the most prominent surgery departments in the nation.
Dr. Gruessner has over 600 publications in medical journals and books to his credit and
has served in a surgical leadership capacity for over 15 years.
Dr. Rainer Gruessner, in his tenure as the Chair of the Department of Surgery
at the University of Arizona, has brought the department into the
forefront of general and transplant surgery. In seven years since becoming Department Chair, Dr. Gruessner hired 70 new faculty members, six of whom are nationally reputed division chiefs, and created several new clinics and
programs, all in line with his vision of providing the best patient-focused
care with noninvasive techniques and robot assistance if necessary.
During his tenure, the University of Arizona
boasted one of the most comprehensive
robotically assisted surgery programs in the
nation.
Dr. Rainer Gruessner got his medical degree from the Johannes Gutenberg University School of Medicine in Mainz, Germany, 1983. He completed his Doctoral thesis at the same institution. His education has not ceased since then. He has published over 600 abstracts, manuscripts, and book chapters. He has also edited two widely-used textbooks on transplantation and is at work on a third one on innovation in surgery. His groundbreaking research has contributed to a new trend to noninvasive, patient-oriented treatment.
Dr. Rainer Gruessner dedicated his life to exploring how to make transplant surgery treatments safer and better for all transplant candidates. He has contributed greatly to the transplant surgery world with new research and an emphasis on noninvasive treatments whenever possible. Dr. Gruessner is also a consummate family man and enjoys outdoor activities.
