PRINCIPAL’S REPORT
PET SHOW & FASHIONS OFF THE FIELD
On Melbourne Cup Day, we traditionally hold our annual ‘Pet Show’ in the morning and our ‘Fashions Off
The Field’ in the afternoon. This will be on again this year on Melbourne Cup Day, Tuesday 7th November.
Some students choose to bring real pets ranging from mice to horses, others choose more creative ‘pets’. With
increased student numbers involved, if families have a choice which pets to bring, smaller, more manageable
pets will be the best option.
A reminder that pets need to be properly restrained with appropriate leads and cages/containers at all
times.
A program is attached to the Newsletter again today. To add to the fun of the day we like everyone to be
involved in our ‘Fashions Off The Field’. There is a section for everyone from hats, ties to full race going
outfits. If new families have any questions about how the day runs, please see Ms. Saunders.
Thank you to our judges Neen & Reilly McAlpine who will be judging the Pet Show and Emily Clavin who
will be judging the Fashions Off the Field.
PLANT SALE On Tuesday the 7th of Nov during the Pet Parade and Fashions off the Field we
will be holding a small plant sale of our excess vegetable garden seedlings.
These plants were propagated from seed by our Prep/1/2 students.
Tomatoes, zucchini, cucumber, lettuce, pumpkins, chard, beans and some
flowering plants will be available. This is the perfect time for planting.
All proceeds go towards improving our lovely vege garden area.
WALK TO SCHOOL 2017
Thank you all the students and parents who have taken part in the organised
walks to school over the last few weeks, and also those who have been
walking and riding to school on a regular basis.
We have been keeping a classroom tally in each room which will be collated.
City of Greater Bendigo staff are coming out next week to collect the school
wide data.
We will aim to have another couple of organised walks before the end of the
year.

BIKE HIKE
A big congratulations to our Gr. 5/6 students who put in a magnificent effort last Thursday and Friday to
complete the 60km Bike Hike. Nice cool weather on Thursday made the 40km day one section very pleasant.
Warmer weather on Thursday meant finishing at lunch time as we did was just perfect.
It was great to see the students challenged, but still be able to show persistence and determination to complete
a personal best effort. The 9km climb to the Cheviot Tunnel on day two pushed most to their limits, but the
ride back down made it all worthwhile.
The students would not have been able to achieve such success without great support from our adult riders –
Mr. C, Ricky, Miss Mannes, Julie Liersch, Susie McGrath, Dave Ticehurst, Derek Cairney, Chris Martin,
Dutchy, Lara Bathurst, Kate Woodhams, Labrini Apostolopolous, Mark Kipping & Daryl Smith. Dave
Liersch, Sharon Hipwell and Bella made sure the checkpoints were well set up for us to rest, eat and drink in
between each stage. We had great support from Garry, Lindsay and Lawrie from the Friends of the Bendigo
Kilmore Rail Trail Group. Thanks also to Ben, Richard and Heather from Freewheeling Fun in Bendigo for
servicing 35 bikes for us in the week leading up to the ride. They loved the school and have already volunteered
to come back next year! Freewheeling fun is a group that recycles bikes for free and puts them back out in the
community to promote healthy living.
It is great to hear of plans from students to continue their riding and also to hear about parents who are planning
to use their experience on the ride to begin regular riding on our local
rail trails.
NATIONAL BANDANNA DAY
We have bandannas for sale at the office for $5 each. Students will be able to wear their bandanna to school
tomorrow, Friday 3rd November. Funds raised are donated to CanTeen which is a support group for young
people living with cancer.
BOOK FAIR
Next week Deb Tuohey will be holding another Book Fair at the school. A flyer is attached to the newsletter
today. There is a Buy One, Get One Free offer. This will be a great opportunity for parents to stock up on
quality books for kids – especially with the holiday season approaching.
KINDER HAT PARADE & PICNIC
Next Thursday 9th November our Preps will meet the Kinder students in the park at 11.30am for our annual
Cup week picnic and hat parade. On this day students will need a cut lunch and a drink plus a decorated hat.
They can use the one worn for the Fashions Off the Field or design a new one.
ART SHOW
After school on Thursday 23rd November, we will be holding an Art Show in the Axedale Hall. At the Art
Show, work that the students have completed throughout the year will be displayed, highlighting their skills
in a range of areas. Parents and families are invited along to view the many samples of work that will be on
display.
Light refreshments will be available.
PARENT TEACHER INTERVIEWS
Parent Teacher Interviews will take place on Wednesday 29th November. Request for times will be sent
home on the November 16th Newsletter.
The interviews are planned for this time as a prelude to Student Reports that come out on Friday 15th
December. Our intention is to make the most of the opportunity to discuss progress and view work samples
and provide parents the chance to discuss specific aspects of their child’s work and approach to school.
Feedback from staff and parents is that discussions are far more powerful and productive in informing
parents of progress and areas for further work.
RESPONSIBLE PET OWNERSHIP
Our Responsible Pet Ownership information sessions due to be conducted on Monday October 30th have
been postponed until December 4th due to illness. These sessions are a valuable tool for teaching students to
be responsible pet owners and how to care, house and feed different pets. It also touches on how to approach
animals that are angry or defensive.
AXEDALE ‘ARE YOU READY FOR SUMMER’ DAY
On Sunday Axedale Our Town Our Future (AOTOF) ran the ‘Are You Ready For Summer? Day, aiming to
assist Axedale residents to be well informed about preparing for emergencies – be they fire, flood, storm etc.
Part of the day was the provision of a handout to inform residents of how to be best prepared.
A copy of this handout is being sent home to families today for your information.
Thank you to the school families who attended. The committee is having an evaluation meeting next
Thursday so if you have any feedback it would be appreciated.
