What is Architecture about ?

Business is about creating/selling ‘product’ . . .

A hit t i b t kfl d d t d d tArchitecture is about workflows needed to engender product. . .

Enterprise Architecture is about the design of [optimal] workflows . . .

It is about the

And how they hang together

David J.W. Gilmour - TOGAF, Toronto, 23 July 2009Enterprise Architecture - Is Data Architecture in the right place?

Thus . . .

Data is needed to ‘condition’ operations on product/componentmoney flows

throughout any system

Data Architecture is necessarily tied to the Business ArchitectureData Architecture is necessarily tied to the Business Architecture

The Business Flow includes ALL processALL processes are conditioned by Datap y

Only some processes are conducted electronically within the IS ‘service subset’

A Data Architecture is required whether or not there are Applications [in an IS environment]

Look at a [necessarily] high level workflow -

A subset

This is revisiting an old question

►Data is NOT exclusive to the Information Systems

► It is fundamental to the business workflows

►At the top of the stack we architect business workflows

►By holding it tight to I.S. we alienate ‘the business’

►Only some data is ‘electronically processed’

►All data is used in/by/during business process

David J.W. Gilmour - TOGAF, Toronto, 23 July 2009Enterprise Architecture - Is Data Architecture in the right place?

■ All initial ‘input’ and final ‘output’ is to ‘people’
