You are probably tired o people asking, What do you want to be when you grow

up? Some students know exactly what they want to do, but most havent got a

clue. The idea o choosing a career is intimidating, and it eels like its ar in the

uture. Theres little time in the commotion o classes, activities, sports, work, and un to

think about what career you want to pursue ater graduation rom high school or college.

It pays, though, to take the time to think about your uture career. The truth is that

youll save a lot o time and money i you have a direction in lie, as opposed to just

nishing high school and worrying about it later. Its really a matter o dollars and

sense. I you choose a career direction now, you can select classes and activities that will

make you highly marketableand highly paidwhen you look or work. And it only

makes sense to have an idea o what you want to do rather than just wandering aimlessly

    through school.

Nobody wants that. Not your parents. Not your teachers. Not your riends. They want

you tobesomebody. They want you to use your talents, ollow your interests, and pursue

your ambitions to become great at what you love to

do in lie. Thats what you should want, too.

So the time is right to take charge o your lie and

think about the uture. You need a plan o action

or how to get rom where you are today to where

you want to be in a ew years: starting out on a

    personally and proessionally rewarding career.

Thats what AchieveTexas in Actionis all about. The

magazine you are holding is one o 16 guides to dierent

career clusters. It is designed to help you make smarter

decisions about your education and career options.

Youve heard the phrase, Inormation is power. Well, this magazine is power. It puts

you squarely in charge o your uture, rom creating your Texas Achievement Plan (TAP)

(see page 5) to choosing college or some other orm o education or training ater high

school. Work with your parents, teachers, and counselors to make decisions, but remind

everyone that it isyouruture at stake and thatyouare taking charge o it.

Get inormation. Get a plan. Get a clue about your career direction. Its all right i that

direction changes; choosing a direction now is better than having no direction at all. Just

promise yoursel that youll make smart choices about where to ocus your time, energy,

    and passion.

Were proud that you are taking steps to plan your career direction, and we pledge that

your school, teachers, and counselors will do all they can to help you make wise choices

on your plans or success. We wish you the best o luck on your journey.

When I was in high school, says Sheryl

Kovach, human resources director oenvironmental services at Phillips Services

Corporation, in Houston, the only job that Ieven knew about was receptionist work. I didntaspire to be a manager or entrepreneur because Ireally didnt know about those disciplines. I was

just looking orward to graduating. That was it. Ireally didnt know what it was I wanted to do.

First, you need to gure out somethings about yoursel. This step can

be as simple as writing down a listo your interests (like video gamesor rock climbing), your hopes anddreams (like helping others), yourtalents (like writing or math ability),and your weaknesses (i youre

squeamish at the sight o blood, orexample, you might not want to bea doctor).

Follow up on this inormal exercise by taking

some ormal assessments to determine yourinterests and abilities. Common assessments

include the Kuder (www.kuder.com), Bridges(www.bridges.com), Career Cruising (www.careercruising.com), COIN (www.coinedu.com),and Myers-Briggs (www.myersbriggs.org) tests.Terry Brock, director o the Texas CounselorsNetwork, a group that helps counselors statewideadvise their students on career planning, says,

These tools give most o our students some careerexploration awareness by the time they entereighth or ninth grade.

Once youve learned about yoursel, learn moreabout your career options. There are thousands

o occupations out there o which you may neverhave heard, and others that do not yet existbecause the technologies have not been developed.Fortunately, there are plenty o resources (see insideback cover) or you, and they are as close as thenearest computer.

One o the most helpul is the Occupation andSkill Computer-Assisted Researcher (or OSCAR, or

short) rom the Texas Workorce Commission. It is a vast database o inormation about hundredso proessions. You can nd OSCAR at www.ioscar.

org/tx. Another good place to start is O*NET(http://online.onetcenter.org).

Gather inormation about what youcan earn in the careers in which you are

interested. Find out whether the careersyou are considering have a promising

utureare they adding or losingjobs? Check out the education youllneed to enter those careers.

The chart on pages 1011presents data on 25 possible

    proessions. Remember, though,

that these are just a sampling o

careers available in the cluster. Go toOSCAR, O*NET, or another resource

    to investigate other careers.

    Ceate Yo TAP

Once you have a better idea o your interests

and abilities, you are ready to plan or highschool and beyond. The Texas Achievement

Plan, or TAP, is your plan or preparing or thecareer o your choice.

The rst step is or students to choose a careercluster, and not a particular occupational goal. In

the eighth grade a student might choose BusinessManagement & Administration and then laterbecome interested in a narrower eld such as humanresources or business management.

The program o study you chooseyour plandoes not stop with graduation rom high school,Brock emphasizes. A student could then pursue atwo-year degree as human resource manager or a

our-year degree as a business administrator. You should set up a TAP that takes you through

career preparation after high school, revising yourblueprint as needed as you go along. If your careerplans include college study, ask your counselorabout tests required for admission to college, such as the PSAT, SAT, or ACT.

Many Texas schools oer innovative programsto prepare students or specic career areas. These include career and technical education(CTE) programs, academies, and magnet schools.

Once youve decided on a career direction, askyour counselor about special programs in your

area that may provide related experiences in yourchosen career.

Samuel Odamah, enrolled in the architectureprogram at the University o Texas at Arlington, having ound his career calling at Dallass SkylineCareer Development Center, a high school withcareer programs in a number o dierent elds.

Skyline is one o the ew schools in the country

that oers programs in architecture, Odamah says.In some careers, Skyline students could evenget proessional certications or licenses right in

high school. It was a great place because youcould nd out whether you really wanted to entera career.

Odamah says that the career cluster system atSkyline taught him the value o planning or his

career and his lie. We learned about planningahead, he says. Those who plan things ahead otime dont have to catch up. Its just a matter o whata person wants out o lie. Planning gives you abetter platorm or success.

Acareer cluster is a group o occupations and broad industriesthat share certain eatures. The Business Management& Administration cluster, or example, includes ofce

managers and business executives. Texas has adopted 16 careerclusters (see back cover), the same ones designated and developedby the U.S. Department o Education. As the graphic below

shows, within each cluster are programs o study, which are morespecifc groupings o similar occupations. Think o a programo study as being like a college major. In Business Management& Administration, you might choose to ocus on HumanResources in high school and college.

    rtd occpts

    Each program o study includes a range o related occupations;

human resources manager is an example o an occupation thatalls within Human Resources. Choosing a career cluster andprogram o study will help you acquire the knowledge andskills youll need to enter your chosen career. It will allow you to

ollow a seamless course o study rom high school into collegeor other postsecondary education or training. The electives youchoose can complement your core academic classes to prepare

you or the challenges o the real world o work.

    rvw y TaP ech y

Dont get locked into a cluster and program o study you dontlike. You should reexamine your TAP at least once a year andchange pathways or clusters i your interests have changed.Choosing a cluster and program o study, even i they changelater, means that youll have a direction in lie. The idea is to beaware o whats going on in your lie and take control o youruture. When you know where your education is going and why,

your classes will become more meaningul. Youll make contact

with students, teachers, and employers who share your interestin a particular career area. Youll have experiences that are unand exciting. Youll be on your way to success in school, in acareer, and in lie.

ATAP is a Texas Achievement Plan, and its a smartidea to create one to guide your studies throughhigh school and into college or other postsecondary

education or training. Your TAP represents your chanceto take control o your education and career choices.

Working with your parents/guardians and guidancecounselor, you can pick the cluster on which youwant to ocus your studies as well as your career and

postsecondary education goals. Dont worry. You arentlocked into your choices. You should revisit your TAPat least once a year to update it. You can change clusters, programs o study, and career and postsecondary goals as

your interests and ambitions change. Having a planeven

You can write your own ticket to success in BusinessManagement & Administration. This cluster represents one othe astest-growing and highest-paying groups o jobs in the

United States. There is a desperate need or trained business proessionals,

says Jamie Belinne, assistant dean o the Rockwell Career ServicesCenter in the University o Houstons Bauer College o Business. You

can take your pick: jobs with many openings include accountants, administrative assistants, bookkeepers, desktop publishers, meetingplanners, ofce managers, personnel recruiters, public relationsspecialists, and store managers.

The Bttm LneWhile the jobs vary widely, you can count on one thing. The bottom

line in business is the bottom line, says Belinne. You cant be tooaraid o numbers.

But dont think business is just boring number crunching. Forinstance, i you like solving mysteries and are good with numbers, the FBI might hire you as an accountant. Our country loses a loto money to white-collar crime each year, explains Belinne. I youreally enjoy investigating and dont mind going through mounds o

inormation to get to the bottom o a mystery you

would probably enjoy accounting.A business career could take youto exotic places as well. Ron

Zimmerman, chie executiveofcer o the Houston

pharmaceutical company PLxPharma, has lived in England,

Russia, and Kazakhstan. He helped bring energyand mining companies tothe latter, a ormer Sovietrepublic. The companydeveloped oil felds topump jobs and revenue

    into the economy.

    Excellent Pay and Ppect

Whether youre working in the oil felds, in adepartment store, or in criminal investigation, pay and prospects in Business Management &Administration are excellent. Managers in bigretail stores can make six-fgure salaries withinfve to 10 years ater college graduation, Belinnesays. The hours are long and the work is hard, but you can be extremely successul.

Accounting majors straight out o collegecan earn $40,000 to $50,000 and managementinormation system majors can earn $60,000 to

$70,000. Inormation system experts are almost likeinterpreters who can move back and orth betweenbusiness and technology, Belinne explains.

    Working with People

Almost every job in business requiresworking as a member o a team.

You really need to like working withpeople, says Monty Stanley, humanresources director at the San Angelo

Standard-Times. The one thing that allbusinesses have in common is their people, their human resources.

In business, eective communicationis critical, whether its ace-to-ace in

meetings or via phone, ax, email, or instantmessaging. Businesspeople need to write, read, and speak well. Mastering business

technology, such as Microsot Ofce,is a must. And math skills are used orbudgeting, pricing, marketing, and manyother areas o a companys operations.

    Networking

Students interested in business shouldlearn how to network, be a part o student

organizations, and not hide behind computerskills, says Ann Hughes, director o the Schoolo Management at Texas Womans Universityin Denton. It is extremely important to

build your interpersonal skills. Hughes alsorecommends that students work while incollegeespecially in internships. Collegegraduates with no practical work experienceare at a disadvantage in the job market.

    Learning to Manage

The most common problem Stanley runs intois when new supervisors dont know how tomanage their sta well. Supervising is a jobthat doesnt come naturally to most people,he says, so I need to be able to identiy whentraining is needed and see that it gets done.

Stanleys job calls on him to help peoplewith problems, and he likes doing it. He has abachelors and masters degree in psychology,

as well as a masters degree in humanresources management.

    Lifelong Learning

In business today, successul people keepconstantly learning.

Welch himsel has taken advantage oDows commitment to developing its people.

He had a strong background in science andmathematics when he started with Dow,and the company trained him in leadershipand management. He is now completing amasters degree in business administration.

Welch sees working in BusinessManagement & Administration as anopportunity or personal improvement. Ican experience, learn, grow, and become a

better individual and leader, he says. And Ican give back to a job I enjoy.

not to cut academic corners in high school

i you want to excel in business studies incollege.

Miller avoided rigorous math classes inhigh school, and paid the price when she wasapplying to colleges. I took math classes likeConsumer Math instead o Algebra II orAdvanced Math, she explains, which youreally need or the college placement tests. I

had to take remedial math in college, andI had to pay or it even though I didnt getcollege credit or it.

    Accounting or Everyone

Ron Zimmerman, chie executive ofcer othe Houston pharmaceutical company PLx

Pharma, has more than 30 years experiencein investment banking and startupmanagement in a variety o internationalfrms. He says math is important inmanagement no matter what the industry.

I strongly suggest anybody interestedin any kind o business take accountingclasses, Zimmerman says. Id actually

advise the classes or any career. Mostpeople go to work in a corporateenvironment. Pretty much everyoneis involved in budgets.

    Focusing Electives

Courses such as Accounting, TouchSystems Data Entry, Business Inormation

Management I, Advertising and SalesPromotion are oered as career electives bymany Texas schools, and they are classesthat can help begin your preparation or abusiness career.

Think o the electives as the chance toocus on your job options. The electivesdier or each o the six business career

programs o study (see Program Profleson opposite page). Each program consists odierent electives designed to begin yourpreparation or those particular careers.

For example, an 11th grader ollowingthe Management program o study couldtake a Business Law course, while another

ollowing the Administrative & InormationSupport program o study might opt orWord Processing.

    Sotware Savvy

Business Inormation Management hasbecome one o the most popular electivesbecause it oers the technical training to use

business sotware. In a startup situation, Zimmerman says,

he fnds mastery o basic sotware programs

such as Microsot Word and Excel extremely

helpul. Youve got to be rugal when yourestarting a company, so people need to besel-sufcient in basic skill sets. With theadvent o word processing and the Internet, people are expected to do a lot o theirown work.

    Get Certifed

In some cases, you can begin work towardcertifcation in particular skills even whilein high school. Working toward MicrosotOfce Specialist certifcation, Internetand Computing Core certifcation, orcertifcation in Bookkeeping Fundamentals,or example, makes you more employable

now and builds the oundation or lateradvancement.

    Imagine flling out your

    parents or neighbors

tax returns and fling them electronically with

the Internal Revenue Service. Thats what

sophomores do every year at the Sidney Lanier

    International Banking and Business Magnet

High School in San Antonio. These students

help people in the community whose income

qualifes them or ree service. We are the only high school in Texas that

does this, magnet coordinator Blanca Ramirez

    declares proudly.

Sidney Lanier teachers trained by the IRS

show the accounting students how to prepare

tax returns, but the teachers dont do the actual

    processingthey just supervise.

One o nine magnet schools around San

Antonio, Sidney Lanier caters to students

    interested in international banking, marketing,

    and entrepreneurship.

Operating as a school within a school,

the magnet program started in 1996 to help

students learn rom the trend toward a global

market economy. They take business classes

and rigorous academic subjects such as Englishand social studies.

    Nearly 255 students out o 1,400 attending

the inner-city high school are part o the

    international banking and business program.

They enhance their studies with senior year job

    shadowing and internships.

An on-site fnancial service center doubles

as a classroom to provide business experience.

Students also manage a restaurant as well as

several shopsbeauty, auto and body repair,

    and printthat serve the community.

Some students will go on to operate their

own businesses. Others attend college and

then begin careers in areas as varied as public

    relations and human resources.

I am proud o these students, saysRamirez, who adds that the Sidney Lanier

magnet program reaches students in ways

    traditional programs cant.

I you have a smaller community, she says,

you can nurture the students. These students

know someone cares about them. I think thats

why the program has been successul.

Until he took an internship with theoce supply store, Oce Max, hissophomore year, surng was the only

passion o Dulles High School student

Geo Hirschheim o Sugar Land. I was

one o those students who was just goingthrough the motions, he recalls.Being introduced to the business

world, however, changed his attitudedramatically. Almost instantly his gradesimproved and he was successul at the

University o Texas at San Antonio, recalls Hirschheims business teacherKen Kaser.

    Caee Lac

Hirschheim credits his experience in theworld o work, together with his ocus

on business classes in high school, withgetting his career o the ground. Havinga strong oundation in marketing and

management prior to college gave me anadvantage over the other students whowere hearing it all or the rst time.

    Practice makes perect, adds

Hirschheim, who went to work as

an executive with Shell InormationTechnology International in Houstonater college, starting in high schoolallowed time to practice. It gave me thecondence and knowledge I needed tocompete in the business world.

    real Be Epeece

Internships are just one o the ways youcan get real business experience whilestill in high school. Education that takesplace outside the classroom, whether ithappens in the workplace or in student

organizations in your own high school, iscalled extended learning, and it is one othe best ways to nd out what business is

    all about.Paid or unpaid internships

are temporary, part-time,or summer jobs that enablestudents to learn business

skills on the job. Oten internsare paired with a mentor, anemployee in the business whooversees their work and showsthem the ropes.

    Make Cotact

One good place to make contacts andlearn about business in general isin career and technical studentorganizations (CTSOs) in

your school. Vickie Thomasis state advisor or the studentorganization Texas BusinessProessionals o America (seeBusiness Competition onnext page). Among a hosto other activities, she says,BPA helps students set up

    job shadowing with businessproessionals.

Job shadowing allowsstudents the opportunityto observe business

proessionals on a typical dayat work. We have matchedup students with proessionals

in every job eld romaudiovisual to accounting, says Thomas. Students getan idea o all aspects obusiness management, andconnect with proessionalswho might later help with

creATe a caporTFolioOne valuable tool that can help you getready or college and beyond is a careerportolioa collection o items that

document your achievements both inand out o school, assembled in oneconvenient package.

A career portolio is not simplya resume, although it can certainlyinclude one. So what should go in acareer portolio? A variety o things,

depending on your own personalexperiences. It could include transcriptsand grades; writing samples; letterso recommendation rom teachers, mentors, or employers; awards youvereceived; and items that documentother activities, such as internships and

    job shadowing experiences.

You need to be specicdates, howmany years, any awards, what theymeant, and who you received themrom, says Grace Brauchle, who helpsstudents put their portolios togetheras the career center coordinator orLehman High School in Kyle.

    Brauchle says portolios come in

handy when students apply or jobs oradmission to college. First impressionsare a very big thing, she says, and

you want to be the one whose papersget passed around the oce. You wantto be the one where the admissionscounselors say, Wow, look at this one!

And a portolio doesnt have to besimply a collection o papers. Artistsand photographers use their portoliosto provide visual examples o theirwork, and so can you. Do you havephotos o someone giving you anaward? Put them in. How about a videoo a perormance? Include it on a DVD.

Do you have experience in Web design?Make an online portolio to showcasewhat you can do.

John Mullen is a Highland Villageconsultant advising startupcompanies that are just in the

process o getting o the ground. He hasa bachelors degree in philosophy and a

master o business administration (MBA)degree and owns his own business.

I really enjoy the variety o the work Ido, he says. I get to collaborate with newpeople, in dierent industries, and on avariety o projects.

I think the philosophy degree hashelped me more in business than theMBA, because it trained me to seekcreative solutions to problems, he

continues. I have seen ar too manybusiness graduates who can only apply acookie-cutter approach to problems.

As Mullen points out, education iscritical to success in Business Management& Administration. O course, a ewentrepreneurs can and do create successul

businesses right out o high school.Nearly every successul businessperson, however, has gotten urther educationater graduation, whether it is militaryservice, certication in a business skill,a two-year associates degree, a our-yearbachelors degree, or a master o businessadministration degree, which takes two

    years ater earning an undergraduate

degree. I you want to be successul inbusiness, plan on continuing to learnthroughout your entire career.

Tec PepA great way to get your start at two-yearcolleges is to take advantage o the TechPrep system in Texas. Tech Prep giveshigh school students a seamless transition

to postsecondary business education bycombining high school work with two

years o study at community colleges andtechnical schools.

South Texas College, or example, withve campuses and centers in McAllen,Weslaco, and Rio Grande City, is a big

supporter o Tech Prep in south Texas. The

college has partnerships with 16 schooldistricts in Hidalgo and Starr counties.

As early as their sophomore year, highschool students begin earning collegecredit toward an associates degree atSouth Texas College with a wide varietyo business specializationsaccounting,

    banking, marketing, management, andimport/export/logistics.

    Aocate deee

Although most management positionsrequire at least a bachelors degree,

there are other business careers, such asaccounting or administrative support, that

do not. Employers oten look or people

with associates degrees, certicates, orrelated work experience.

    Most community colleges oer several

types o educational programs. The rst, academic transer programs, gets studentsready to switch schools ater their second

year o higher education and pursue abachelors degree in business at a our-

year university. Applied studies consisto programs designed to allow

students to earn a businesscerticate or associates degreeleading directly to employment.

North Central Texas Collegeoers an associate o appliedscience (AAS) degree in businessmanagement or 70 credit hoursor in computer inormation systems

or 61 credit hours. It also oersa certicate o businessmanagement or networkoperating systems or31 credit hours.

Kathleen Cochran advanced all the way tovice president at Heritage Bag, a nationalindustrial trash bag company headquarteredin Carrollton, without a college degree o anykind. She was ortunate enough, however, to

have a mentor on her rst job who taught hereverything about business.

The lack of a college degree didnt hold

me back, but a college degree wasnt

necessary in those days, she says. My advice tostudents today is to get a degree. Today, all things

being equal, the person with the degree will get

the job. Our company requires at least a four-year

    degree now.

Students applying or transerring to our-year universities in Texas have many choiceso excellent bachelors degree programs inbusiness. Business Weekmagazine ranksthe University o Texas at Austins our-yearbusiness program number 10 in the country.

The cost o UT Austins program is a littleover a quarter o the tuition at the number 1

program at the University o Notre Dame.Three other Texas collegesSouthern

Methodist University, Texas ChristianUniversity and Texas A&Mhave our-yearbusiness programs in the top 50 nationwide.

    MBA Poam

Students interested in careers in managementshould look into MBA programs. Theseprograms, usually two years long, aim to givestudents all the toolseconomics, nance, marketing, organizational psychologyneeded to be rst-rate managers.

The Texas Workorce Commission has created an

online resource called Reality Check to help you

understand how much money youll need to live on yourown after high school or college and how you can earn it. There are three ways to explore careers,

expenses, and earnings. For the rst option, which is called Get a Reality Check, you choose

an area youd like to live in, such as Austin. You then go through a series o screens with real-world

costs or items such as housing, clothing, transportation, health care, and personal expenses. The site

automatically adds up your estimated monthly expenses, then uses salary inormation or Texas to

show you careers that will make you that much money. The second option, called Future Salary,

starts with the wages you expect to earn, what education you plan to pursue, and the career cluster that

interests you. Then it generates a list of careers in which you can make that amount of money. The

third option, Career Direct, begins with your career choice and the area where you want to live, then

shows how your estimated expenses subtract from the salary for your chosen job. The site, which

is at www.cdr.state.tx.us/realitycheck, is a great way to play what i when it comes to mixing your job,
