Dear Parents, Caregivers and Community Members,
Welcome back to Term Two, I trust that everyone had a relaxing and enjoyable break. As you may be aware I am Acting Principal for the next 3 weeks while Mrs Ward enjoys some well-earned long service leave.
Staff
I would like to take this opportunity to welcome our new, and returning, staff. We welcome Mrs Laura Greer, who has taken over from Mrs Ellacott in Room 15. Mrs Britta Brown has returned from Maternity Leave and is teaching in Room 17. Mrs Maria Cameron has also returned from Maternity Leave and is utilising her many talents in a number of different teaching roles across the school. Mrs Alinta Derschow has also returned as part of our fantastic AIEO team.
NAPLAN Testing
On Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday of next week Years 3 & 5 students will be participating in NAPLAN testing in the areas of Language Conventions, Reading, Writing, Spelling and Numeracy. Students in Years 4 & 6 will be doing practice testing at the same time in preparation for next year’s tests. NAPLAN testing gives students, as well as schools, an indication of where they are compared to students Australia wide, who will be completing the test at the same time. Teachers have been working hard to prepare students for these tests to ensure they have the opportunity to do their best, as well as reducing any anxiety some may be feeling. This has been in conjunction with the rich and diverse curriculum provided to students at Cassia PS. An information pamphlet has been sent home to parents of Year 3 & 5 students.
Term 2
Term Two is jammed packed with a number of exciting events to look forward to. These include visits from Food Sensations, the CSIRO, Athletics Carnivals and NAIDOC. Be sure to keep an eye on the newsletter, school web page http://www.cassiaps.wa.edu.au/ , or download our skoolbag app so you are well informed about what is happening at Cassia.
Kindest Regards, Martin Ross - Acting Principal

READING
Learning at home
READING WITH YOUR CHILD IS IMPORTANT!
Reading with your child every day encourages a love of
books and reading. Encourage your child to look at books
regularly, and get family and friends to read with your child
as much as possible. Try reading with your child for the en-
joyment of spending time together – it’s a great way to end
he day.
GET IN THE MOOD FOR READING
Children who enjoy reading at home are more likely to suc-
ceed as they learn to read at school. Try setting up a special
reading time and place where you and your child can relax
and be comfortable.
USE YOUR LOCAL LIBRARY
Libraries are a treasure trove for young readers with a wide range of books, CDs, DVDs, magazines and comics. Visiting
your local library is a great way to:
• share with your child how important books are
• involve the whole family in regular reading activities
• look for your child’s favourite authors and illustrators
• use resources that might not be available at home, such as computers
• join in holiday activities.
It’s really important to give your child lots
of praise as they learn to read.
There are lots of things to read including nursery
rhymes, story books, non-fiction books, books on di-
nosaurs and pets, books you make together, funny
stories and poems, joke books, websites and comic
books, newspapers, catalogues and magazines, recipe
books, street maps, and dictionaries.
Fantastic reading books to get started:
Hairy Maclary and friends by Lynley Dodd
Koala Lou by Mem Fox
Mr Gumpy’s Outing by John Burningham
We’re Going on a Bear Hunt
by Michael Rosen
Annie’s Chair by Deborah Niland

On Friday the 29th of April, Cassia Primary
School commemorated the ANZAC's with a
beautiful service run by the Student Councillors.
Special guest Steven Hoddy from the Pilbara Regiment gave the ad-dress and had the stu-dents listening atten-
tively from start to end.
Classes made and laid wreaths to show their
respects.
Throughout the week students completed
ANZAC Day activities, including making and wearing poppies with

Exciting news for Cassia Primary School
School Notices
It has been an exciting week with the an-nouncement that Cassia has won a state-wide 'Clean Seas Competition', sponsored by AUSMEPA in partnership with AMSA and Ports Australia. During Technology lessons at the end of Term 1, some classes created collages and artworks that depicted their ideas of clean oceans and happy marine environments.
Our Room 4 entry of turtles was the winning entry. Our prize of an iPad and a large Lego Maersk Ship Kit will be arriving soon, so I will provide another update after they arrive. The CEO of the International Maritime Organisa-tion is adding our entry to a global portal, de-tails of which I will pass on when they become available. Well done, Cassia!
If there are any parents who would like to join our Waste Management and Gardening Com-mittee for 2016, please contact me at school on 9172 2495. We only meet once or twice a term, so the time commitment is small, how-ever your input and ideas are invaluable.
Mrs Neale
LIBRARY - Do you have some spare time? Care to volunteer at the school? You could join Mrs Cummins in the Li-
brary to help repair and cover books. Please call the school to express your interest on 9172 2495.
VISITORS - Just a reminder to parents and guardians that if you need to bring something to your child/ren during
the school day such as lunches, please remember to visit the front office first so we may assist in getting the item
to your child/ren for you. As part of our OHS policy all visitors must report to the office to sign in and wear their
visitor badge if you are walking through the school grounds.
BIRTHDAYS - Although we support the celebration of student birthdays at Cassia we would like to remind families
that if you are bringing a cake to school please ensure it is cut up for easy distribution. Cupcakes are even better!
SPARE CLOTHING - Kindy and Pre-Primary parents and guardians, the ECE team would like to suggest your child has
a change of clothing including underwear packed in their bag daily. This way any little accidents can be dealt with
promptly.
WELCOME - We welcome back in Term 2 Mrs Britta Brown and Mrs Maria Cameron from maternity leave and AIEO,
Alinta Derschow. Cassia also welcomes Room 15’s new teacher, Mrs Laura Greer while Mrs Sarah Ellacott leaves us
to welcome her new baby!
MOTHER’S DAY STALL - Year 6 students and teachers would like to thank all the families who donated an item for
the Mother’s Day Stall. The stall was a success and we hope every Mother has a wonderful day on Sunday and en-
joys the items that were purchased especially for you!
Messages from Mrs Hussey - Physical Education
Lunch Time Sport
Students from Year 1-6 now have the opportunity to take part in structured lunch time sports. Monday through to Friday has a different sport led by a different teacher and there are some great benefits to taking part: Students can challenge themselves by playing with students from various year levels It provides the chance to meet new friends Students can learn new sports and skills Most importantly, students can have fun and be active
The Golden Torch
Showing positive sportsmanship, encouraging classmates and listening to instructions are all ways classrooms can win “The Golden Torch”. This is a reward which will be given out at each assembly to the class which showed the best behaviour over the fortnight. If a classroom is lucky enough to win, not only will they get to keep the trophy until the next assembly, but they will also get a box full of extra sports equipment and games to play with. Good luck and may the best sport win!
Walk to School Day
Now that the weather has started to cool down, there’s no better way to get more exercise than to walk to school.
Friday 20th May is National Walk to School Day, a day where everyone is encouraged to leave the car at home and
slip on some walking shoes.
Regular exercise like walking with your child not only helps them (and you!) beat chronic problems like obesity, heart disease, behavioural and mental health issues and diabetes. It also gives you a great opportunity to teach your child safe ways to behave around roads and traffic. Remember, Active Kids are Smarter Kids so don’t forget to add Walk to School day to the Calender! Mrs Hussey Phys Ed Teacher
