    FOREWORD

This is the twenty-third issue of Assistantships and Graduate Fellowships in theMathematical Sciences (A&GF). This publication is primarily intended as a conve-nient source of comparative information on graduate programs in the mathematicalsciences for prospective graduate students and their advisors. Its contents will alsobe useful to others in the mathematical community who are interested in supportpatterns for graduate education. The A&GF is a complement to the annual Societypublication, Mathematical Sciences Professional Directory.

Information in the A&GF was provided by departments in response to a surveyquestionnaire mailed in late spring 2010. For a copy of the survey questionnaireused to compile this publication, please visit the AMS website at www.ams.org/employment/agfforms.html. The data describe assistantship and fellowship sup-port provided for the academic year 20102011. The publication and distributionschedule is designed to provide timely information to applicants for graduate pro-grams and for support for study beginning in the fall of 2011.

Free copies of A&GF are sent to institutional members of the AMS andto other departments of mathematical sciences at four-year institutions listed inthe Professional Directory. Individual AMS members may request a free copy byreturning the form included with their first member dues notice mailed in July.

We continue to welcome comments and suggestions concerning the contentsof future issues of the A&GF. Suggestions may be sent to Dr. Ellen J. Maycock,American Mathematical Society, 201 Charles Street, Providence, RI 02904-2294.

How Is the Current Job Market?

Figure 1 presents the fall 1985 through fall 2009trend in the final unemployment rate of new doctoralrecipients in the U.S. The counts on which theserates are determined do not include those newdoctoral recipients whose fall employment statuswas unknown (approximately 12% in fall 2008 and

fall 2009) or those outside the U.S. Although theunemployment rate fluctuated during most of the1980s, it remained well below 5.0% until 1990.With the problems associated with the entire U.S.economy in the early 1990s, the unemploymentrate rose steadily until it reached an all-time high of10.7% in 1994 and held at that rate through 1995.It began to decrease in 1996 and has fluctuatedbetween 2.9% and 5.0% since 1997. This yearsfigure of 4.9% shows an increase in last yearsunemployment rate of 3.8%.In addition to newdoctoral recipients who are without employmententirely, there is a group that could be considered

underemployed .For new doctoralrecipients in them a t h e m a t i c a lsciences who areseeking an academiccareer, the mostdesirable type of initialacademic positionis either a tenure-track position or amultiyear postdoctoralappointment. Whathappened for much

of the 1990s isthat increasingnumbers of newdoctoral recipientsin the mathematicalsciences were hiredfor one-year jobsin colleges anduniversities. Suchpositions have beena matter of great

This article provides those considering doctoral studyin the mathematical sciences with perspectives onthe job market for new doctoral recipients. The AMSCommittee on the Profession initiated this article inorder to fulfill what it saw as a responsibility to providestudents with the best information possible with which

to make decisions about their future study and careerplans. The article has been updated for this yearsissue to include current data.

One of the difficulties with providing current or futuregraduate students with information on what theircareer prospects might be is that future employmenttrends are notoriously hard to predict. Therefore, wedo not attempt here to predict the future job marketin the mathematical sciences. The best we can do istry to provide as complete a picture as possible of thecurrent job market.

Mathematics itself is a vibrant area, full of exciting

challenges in research, applications, and teaching. The vitality of the field depends to a great extent onan influx of talented young people. Whether or notto embark on graduate studies in the mathematicalsciences is a highly individual choice. We urgestudents contemplating graduate school to talk overthe information in this article, as well as other morepersonal considerations, with appropriate faculty intheir departments.

Current Employment Trends in the Mathematical Sciences

Data on employment has been a focus of the AnnualSurvey of the Mathematical Sciences, sponsoredby the American Mathematical Society, AmericanStatistical Association, Institute of MathematicalStatistics, Mathematical Association of America, andthe Society of Industrial and Applied Mathematics.

The results of this survey are the source of datapresented in this article and are available on theAMS website at www.ams.org/annual-survey/survey-reports.

concern within the mathematical community, because they typically do not provide the supportand stability that are so important when newdoctoral recipients are trying to establish theircareers. For those receiving doctorates duringthe 200809 academic year who took academicemployment in the U.S., 20% reported findingpositions that were tenured or tenure-track.

One of the biggest problems in the job marketover much of the 1990s was that a sizable number

of job seekers in themarket were peoplewho had a successionof temporary jobsand who were unableto obtain a tenure-eligible position. Eachyears crop of newdoctoral recipientsmust compete for jobs with those whoare coming off thesetemporary positions.Hiring reports for fall

2008 indicated thatat institutions offeringa doctoral degree inmathematics 23% ofthe tenure track hireswere new Ph.D.s,while at institutionsoffering a bachelorsand masters degree inmathematics 44% ofthe tenure track hireswere new Ph.D.s.

The Annual Survey does not survey individualsafter the first year they obtain their degree, soour understanding of all the dynamics of the job market beyond the first year is limited. Aspecial report, conducted by the AMS Task Forceon Employment, provides additional informationon the impact the current economic instabilityis likely to have on employment at collegesand universities. Employment Opportunities for Mathematicians

For those who eventually obtain employment in themathematics departments of colleges andUniversities, there are a wide variety of positions

How Many Doctorates Are Granted EachYear?

Figure 2 shows the total number of newdoctoral recipients in the mathematicalsciences produced by U.S. institutions from197778 to 200809. Although the numberof new doctoral recipients leveled off from thelate 1970s to the late 1980s, the 1990s hada significant rise back to the level of the early1970s. After starting the current decade at atwelve year low the number of new doctoralrecipients has increased every year, reachingan all time high for 2008-2009.

The numbers in Figure 2 include all U.S. andnon-U.S. citizen new doctoral recipients. Themix has shifted greatly, from about 75% ofdoctorates awarded to U.S. citizens in the mid-1970s to only about 46% today.

    Other Characteristics about New DoctoralRecipients

The percentage of females among thoseU.S. citizen receiving doctorates has steadilyincreased over the last couple of decades.Figure 3 shows that the percentage of femalenew doctoral recipients continues to increasegradually. Females accounted for 33% of the200809 new doctoral recipients.

the mathematical sciences because past historyhas shown that such forecasts have not beenuseful. Unpredictable factors involving the nationaleconomy, the status of higher education, andeven the world political situation can come intoplay, rendering even the most careful forecastsunreliable.

Table 6B gives the total number of full-time and full-time first-year graduate students in Groups I, II, III,and Va combined, and the percentages of womenand of U.S. citizens for fall 1999 through fall 2008and the percentage of underrepresented minorities ineach category for fall 2003 through fall 2008. Fromthese data we can see that the total number of full-time graduate students in the doctoral mathematicsgroups had been generally increasing since 1999reaching a high in 2006; enrollment has decreasedslightly for the second consecutive year to 10,883.Similarly, the percent of full-time graduate studentswho are U.S. citizens, which had been increasing

gradually since 2001, has dropped slightly this year. The percent of first-year full-time graduate studentswho are U.S. citizens had been increasing until 2004,when it reached 60%. After dropping slightly the nexttwo years, it remains stable at 56% this year. The per-centage of females among full-time graduate studentsin the combined mathematics groups has remainedrelatively stable over the 10-year period shown.

    The AMS Welcomes Graduate Students

When you enroll as a full-time graduate studentat a U.S. institution, a lifelong relationship withthe American Mathematical Society will begin,

since most of these institutions provide free AMSnominee memberships to their mathematicsgraduate students during every year of study. We look forward to welcoming you into theprofession, and we encourage you to consider, early in your career, membership in other importantmathematical sciences organizations, includingthe American Statistical Association, the Institutefor Mathematical Statistics, the MathematicalAssociation of America, and the Society forIndustrial and Applied Mathematics.

to consider. A small number of the new doctoralrecipients may find a career at the communitycollege level (27 of the 200809 new doctoralrecipients reported taking such positions.) Most, however, will find themselves at bachelors, masters, and doctoral degree-grantingmathematics departments. Figure 5 shows thedistribution of the approximately 23,000 full-timefaculty in U.S. mathematical sciences departmentsin fall 2008 by the highest degree granted by theiremploying department. Approximately 40% of allfull-time faculty are employed in institutions grantinga bachelor's degree in mathematics as the highestdegree, while 32% are employed in institutionsgranting a doctoral degree in mathematics as thehighest degree.

Based on figures available since the late 1970s,the percentage of new doctoral recipients in themathematical sciences finding employment outsideof academia (business, industry, and government)

in the U.S. remained below 20% during most ofthe 1980s and early 1990s. While this percentagehad been showing significant increases, averagingaround 30% in the late 1990s, it droppedsignificantly during the early 2000s. The numberof new doctoral recipients taking positions inbusiness, industry, and government has beenslowly increasing since 2004 and it increased13% last year. This constitutes 26% of all the newdoctoral recipients employed in the U.S. (the sameas last year).

If you are considering a career in business andindustry, it is important to seek a graduate programthat will provide you with a versatile foundation inmathematics as well as skills in communication, teamwork, and problem solving. To betterunderstand the possibilities available in industrialemployment, visit the AMS website on careers atwww.ams.org/careers.
