 There is an innate randomness that permeates the universe. It is this

randomness that makes life exciting. It’s like an innite game of monopoly: in the

roll of a die you can lose something precious, and in another roll you can receive

an opportunity. Opportunities are rare to come by, and that’s hat makes them

special ! they ouldn’t be as special if there as a physics e"uation told you that

you had one coming your ay in the next #$ minutes.

%ut hen opportunities do chance by your ay, you should pounce on it.

I graduated out of high school last year. I as sure that I anted an education

abroad, as it ould help me become a citi&en of the orld, and also allo me to

take high level courses and sub'ects that ould truly help me achieve my

potential. I applied and as accepted to ()*. %ut ith the nancial constraints

as ell the volatility of my father’s 'ob at the time, I decided to let go of my

dreams so that I not be nancial burden.

+s a lan %, I had applied to colleges in India as ell, and secured admission to

some premier Indian colleges like Indian Institute of Technology, -hennaiathematical Institute, Indian /tatistical Institute and %IT/0ilani. I anted to

pursue -omputer /cience, and IIT provided a fantastic option to do so. %ut the

cut0o1 for -omputer /cience from the best IITs as rank 23. +lthough I’d studied

very hard for it, no one from my state got a rank loer than 433. I decided to

drop a year and prepare for the IIT0566 again, as I anted the best possible

education I could receive ithin my means.

I started preparing seriously, but I focused on more than 'ust IIT preparation.

 I alays had a deep interest in athematics and -omputer /cience and so I

spent time self0studying from some rigorous university0level books ! 7inite

8imensional 9ector /paces by almos, rinciples of athematical +nalysis by;udin, and ;eal <orld askell among others. I supplemented my learning from

these books by numerous online courses from *dacity and 6d= on topics like

-ombinatorics, +lgorithms, Introductory 8ata /cience, Introductory achine

>earning, >inear +lgebra and +pplications, and more.

In +ugust, my friends and I got together and brainstormed solutions to the

congestion of %angalore roads and created itchiker ?http:@@hitchhikers.tkA: a

currently in0development idea to form a society of individuals in our city ho

ere both illing to share and lend rides, analogous to *ber and >yft, but ithout

the monetary emphasis. <e are currently orking on the pro'ect, and plan to

release it in +ugust B3#2. I am a part of the development team that is creatingthe +ndroid +pp.

In 8ecember, I also started an internship in (IIT Technologies ?a tech rmA as I

have a deep fascination for the application of theoretical computer scientic

ideas in the industry. *nder this, I am orking on an application for the Coogle

Class, an android application of <i07i triangulation, and might also try to help

ith a data science problem of +irline disruption. I plan to use this internship as a

springboard to both help me gather valuable experience and cement my

understanding of programming and data science ! to topics I’m very excited

about.

nances stabili&ed. I as not about to let my opportunity escape, so here I am,

applying again this year to ()*. I’ve learnt a lot and gron, but my dreams

haven’t changed. I am a much better student no, and ill be a more valuable

asset to the community at ()*. I am more focused at my goal but also illing to

explore the other options available here. I really hope I’m accepted again.
