Festival will bring art, entertainmentand delicious food to the streets ofdowntown Adrian, Michigan, on theweekend of Sept. 21-22, 2012.

What is Art-A-Licious? First of all, it’san art festival that brings more than80 artists to historic downtown Adrianto show and sell their work. But morethan that, it’s a celebration of heritageand community. Local food is a stapleof Art-A-Licious, and throughout theweekend, in addition to professionalartists and performers, the talents oflocal K-12 and college students willbe on display.

rt-A-Licious believes that art is foreveryone, not just professionals! Thesixth annual Art-A-Licious festival

offers lots of opportunities for kids andadults alike to stretch their creative muscles.

Have you ever watched a potter using athrowing wheel and thought it looked likefun? At the always-popular Throwing Tent(pictured at left), you can give it a try foryourself. The tent is staffed by volunteersfrom the Adrian College Art and Design

Department and from the college’sCommunity Clay program.

The Youth Art Tent, staffed by AdrianCollege art education students and artteachers from Lenawee County schools,gives the younger set a chance to maketheir own decorative coasters to takehome, paint a piece of artwork on one ofmany easels that will be set up for them touse, or add their own brushstrokes to acommunity mural.

Kids can also take part in sidewalkchalk art at designated spots along SouthMain Street.

And what about music? Come to theAdrian Symphony Orchestra tent inNonprofit Row, where volunteers will beon hand to give visitors an introduction toplaying a musical instrument. Meanwhile,other organizations along South MainStreet will offer a variety of art activities oftheir own.

exhibitors, talented spraypaint artistHolly Perez. Now you can watch asHolly leads students from Adrian

College’s Art Rocks Kids summer artcamp in turning an old car into apiece of art before your eyes!

This summer, Art Rocks Kidscampers painted two cars to pro-mote the work of two local organi-

zations: Goodwill of SoutheastMichigan, which donated the cars,and Habitat for Humanity, whichdonated the paint. Those cars willbe displayed on South Main Streetduring Art-A-Licious, and a third

vehicle will be decorated on siteduring the festival.

Festivalgoers can also admirehoods decorated by students inthe collision repair and refinishprogram at the LISD TECH Center.

For Susan Amstutz, painting isan obsession. Oil and mixed mediapaintings show the variety anddepth of her vision, from richly tex-tured, mysterious abstractions tolush midwestern landscapes.Amstutz, a Michigan native,received a BFA from the Universityof Michigan in Painting andDrawing.

Mike Barker earned his BFA atAdrian College where he internedat Flatlanders Sculpture. Ultimatelyhe was hired at Flatlanders, assist-ing Ken Thompson in building anderecting his sculpture. He has goneon to develop his own studio,Multimedia Designs in Bay City.Barker’s large-scale sculptures havebeen installed in Port Huron,Adrian, Saugatuck, and Canton. What can I say, I'm a totallydevoted Bead Freak, designing, andinstructing in the art of Off-LoomBead Weaving. The fine arts have been my pas-sion since a very young age. I amexperienced in several mediumssuch as oil, acrylic, watercolor, pho-tography and mixed media. Pearl Kissed Jewelry is amother/daughter partnership ofEllen VanHully-Bronson and IsobelCary Bronson that started in 2004.Ellen draws a feminine inspirationfrom years of Architectural Designwhile Isobel’s training in MechanicalEngineering and Biochemistry lendorganic influence to her work. Theirjewelry is made of sterling silverand gold-filled metals with freshwa-ter pearls, gemstones and theoccasional Swarovski crystal.

It all began when I was gettingready to send my son off to col-lege. I ran across his bag of marblesand I wanted to do something dif-ferent with them. That’s how it allbegan. My creations consist of friedand un-fried, new, vintage, andantique marbles. I am having aball, or should I say a marble?

Watercolor is my favorite, butusing water based oils, acrylics, andspeed ball paints in monotypes hasbroadened my scope. Portraits inpastels, oils and pencil have been achallenge lately. I enjoy landscapes,portraits, everyday objects. Peoplein action and repose inspire me asdoes the beauty in nature.

I have been woodcarving since1984. I’m mostly self-taught. Mostof my carvings are in relief, but I likeexperimenting with all facets of theart, including taking classes. I have had 25-plus years ofstained glass experience consistingmainly of custom designed glass-work for specific installations. Glassis my medium. I find the play oflight on it, how sun affects the col-ors and textures throughout theday, the story told within, and thefeeling derived from it cannot beduplicated by any other source.(Demos: Friday 4-7 p.m.)

From experiencing the stark reali-ties of life during my law enforcementcareer with the federal government, Inow focus my retirement years pho-tographing the beauty of the worldaround me. Caught by the craft of ceramics20+ years ago, C. Corky Dunsmoreapprenticed herself to teacher EdithFranklin at the 577 Foundation inPerrysburg, Ohio, to learn all thingspottery. Quitting her day job in2010, she launched her career as afull-time artist. Her work featuresfunctional and raku ware with hand-carved trees, vines, animals, coildesigns and multi-layered glazes.

First camera in 1967, second anOlympus SLR in the mid ’70s, third aNikon SLR (F1 body) with a 35mm,50mm, and telephoto lenses. TheNikon was purchased in 1966 at acommissary in the Philippines. Nowthere is a Nikon Coolpix L110, a smallcamera with a good grip. It’s nice tohold and takes great pictures.

My documentary photographyrecords scenes from the worldaround us, views that we see everyday but seldom take the time toreally look at. A career as aMechanical Engineer informs myworks, helping to distill my visioninto the simplest elements. I have been sewing since I couldreach the pedal of the sewingmachine, from doll clothes to myown clothing. I have tried manyother crafts but always return tothe sewing. Kelsey Keyes (pronounced like“eyes”) uses her background in sci-ence and love of the natural worldto inform her artistic creations,from beaded bee colonies drippingwith beaded honey and photo-graphs of beaded objects in the“real” and natural world to flowersmade from aluminum cans. We are a mother and daughterteam and have been creatingunique and original pieces of artfor most of our lives. We lovebeing creative using lots of differ-ent mediums. Therefore ourartwork consists of a wide array ofpieces from: photography, water-colors, acrylic on canvas, andmixed media collages, to handpainted totes and handbags, andhandcrafted jewelry.

he Adrian Public Library is pleased to host mystery authorSharon Fiffer, author of the Jane Wheel mystery series,during Art-A-Licious. Fiffer will meet fans and sign copies

of her newest book at 1 p.m. Saturday.Fiffer did not begin her writing career as a mystery author. She

only found her inner Nancy Drew after co-editing threeacclaimed collections of literary memoirs.

“I was spending two weeks at Ragdale, anartist’s colony in Lake Forest, Illinois, beginningwork on my own collection of stories based ongrowing up in and around my parents’ tavern, TheE Z Way Inn,” Fiffer explains. “Looking around myquiet room in this beautiful Arts and Crafts house onthe prairie, I started playing around with a ‘what-if ’scenario, and, by the end of the day, I had writtenthe first 20 pages of ... something ... which I was call-ing ‘Stuff’ and which later, almost entirelyunchanged, became the first chapter of ‘Killer Stuff.‘

Besides her mystery novels. Fiffer’s short storieshave been published in several literary magazines.She lives in the Chicago area with her husband.

Ruthruff Wilson Foundation stage atthe festival.

The stage will have a new locationand a new look this year. It will be an8-foot by 12-foot platform with an18-inch rise, and it will be located onNorth Main Street near Sauce ItalianGrill and Pub.

Performers will include Rio Doyle,Charlie Southwell, the Slupe Sisters,actors from the cast of “Annie,” theAdrian High School Jazz Band and theMadison Performing Arts Club.

a giant outdoor screen.This year’s free family movie is a 2011 animated film about a clever fairy-tale

cat, featuring the voices of Antonio Banderas, Salma Hayek, Zach Galifianakis,Billy Bob Thornton and Amy Sedaris. The movie, to be shown on North MainStreet on the Croswell Opera House’s outdoor screen, starts at sunset andruns 90 minutes. Chairs and blankets are recommended.

Peter Barr, professor of art history atSiena Heights University, will lead atwo-hour walking tour of Adrian’sDennis and State Streets historic dis-trict during Art-A-Licious on Saturday,Sept. 22. The tour will begin inside theLenawee County Historical Museum at

1 p.m. and will focus on the keyarchitectural features of 10 differenthouse styles in the district. Along theway, Barr will also discuss Adrian’srich history and some of the peoplewho made the city prosperous. Wearcomfortable shoes.

The putt-putt course isfully functional, and visitors canpick up clubs (provided byGoodwill) at the information tentat the Four Corners.
