Dear Parents, carers and friends within ourcommunity.I am delighted to be writing to you at the end of avery busy and exciting term at William Parker whereyou are about to experience the successes andachievements of our pupils both in and outside theclassroom. As you will see and read, we have welcomed anumber of visitors, participated in a variety ofworkshops and represented the academy, all in orderto give our pupils a wide variety of experiences thatwill support them in becoming well rounded citizenswhere they can make positive contributions to theircommunities. Some of these events were participatingin training in order to prepare and revise for exams, attending alternative sports workshops at BrightonUniversity, representing the academy in a sportingfixture, signing up for the Duke of Edinburgh award, participating in the Eucharist assembly and manymany more!I am incredibly proud of the achievements of the boysduring this past term, both academically andpastorally. They have demonstrated on severaloccasions that they are respectful, hardworking andresilient young men, and more recently this has beencommented on by visitors to the academy. The ParkerManners are being owned by the pupils and they aredemonstrating the importance of them as they carrythemselves around the site.During the year we have focussed on improving ourindependent advice and guidance for all of our pupils. This involved individual pupil and parent meetingswith Years 8 and 9 in order to support the boys withmaking their option choices, inviting in a host ofexternal companies, trades and services in to developaspiration and give advice and guidance about futurerecruitment and university places. The response frompupils has been excellent and the plans for the rest ofthe year are also exciting. We really enjoyed hosting Eucharist with the Bishop ofLewes. Years 7-10 were invited to take part in theservice, which they took very seriously. The picturesdemonstrate our boys either receiving a blessing orcommunion. It gave us time to reflect on the valuesthat we hold dear as individuals and as an academy. We have been very busy preparing our boys and Year13 pupils for their impending Public Examinations andthe pupils have been amazing, showing greatperseverance in order to make the strides in order toget the results that they so deserve in the Summer. Iam sure that you will join me in wishing them the verybest of luck for a good set of papers and questions. Our Summer academy term starts on Tuesday 18thApril at the normal time. I wish you all a restful and peaceful break withenjoyable times with your family.Stephanie NewmanActing Principal

Welcome

On the 29th March, we welcomed Bishop Richard of Lewes to lead theEaster Eucharist at our academy. The Eucharist took place in the mainhall for years 7 and 8 during period 1 and years 9 and 10 during period2. We also welcomed a number of the academy governors to theEucharist. This was the first formal Eucharist worship in the school inthe last two years. Previously, Eucharist has been an informal and smaller affair in theschool Chapel. However, as we near the Academy’s 400th anniversarythe decision has been taken to develop Eucharist in a larger capacitythan before. Rev. Luke Dean, incumbent chaplain, invited the Bishop to lead theworship and opened an invitation for him to observe the academy in itsteaching and learning. At the start of each service, student John Zachariah led the processioninto the hall. During the services, Milo Moody and Sam Tomlin sharedreading the gospel and reading the intercessions. All students weregiven the opportunity to take bread and (non-alcoholic) wine or receivea blessing from the Bishop; they also shook hands as a sign of peace. Aspecial mention goes to sixth form student Yafet Okubet for his expertpiano playing as students entered the hall.

Steve relived his memories of his very ownNational Cup winning memories from 2004.He spoke to students from the sixth formFootball Academy, the Year 8 football teamand Year 10 GCSE and BTEC students abouthis own journey from nearly missing out ona scholarship at Brighton and Hove Albion,

to playing against Liverpool in the LeagueCup. He talked about being on loan atseveral non-league clubs before beingsigned by Bournemouth and going on thejourney through the leagues beforesecuring a premier league position. Stevespoke clearly about the ‘Perseverance’ hehad to show and the ‘Faith’ in his ownability to ultimately ‘Achieve’ what he has -three key words from the schools ethos. The Year 8 boys were particularly excited

and inspired by Steve’s visit. They askedhim many questions, ranging from hisfavourite pitch to play on to the best playerhe has ever come up against. They wereparticularly intrigued about his schoolfootball memories.Steve said “It was fantastic coming back toschool, seeing the boys and some of the oldstaff. At the beginning of January, Ark WilliamParker’s U13 football team won through tothe final 16 in the English Schools NationalCup after beating George Abbot School inGuildford. The team played in the next round on 25thJanuary and showed great perseverance inpursuit of a place in the final 8.The Year 8 team fought hard against strongopposition from All Hallow's CatholicSchool, Farnham but their search for aplace in the Quarter Final of the NationalCup ultimately ended in a 1-0 defeat inextra time. The first half was an even contest with bothsides having strong penalty claims. Parkercaptain Benn Ward had the best of Parkerschances, drawing the All Hallows keeperinto a fine save from a free kick. All Hallowshad a lively forward line and man of thematch Jamal Palmer, alongside HarveyMapstone, marshalled the defence well tokeep the All Hallows chance to a minimum.Spencer Winters and Freddie Legg alsodefended well against quick and skilfulwingers. The second half followed a similar patternof play. All Hallows putting the Parkerdefence under more scrutiny and just whenthey thought they had broken the deadlockCody Craddock was on hand to produce afine save to tip the ball onto the crossbarwhen a certain goal seemed inevitable.

William Parker took the previous game topenalties and the game was heading for asimilar ending, however, the impressive AllHallows striker managed to find the netwith a cross-come-shot with only threeminutes of extra time remaining.Coach Jimmy Elford said, “The Parker boyscan hold their heads high and be proud oftheir achievements; they reached the lastsixteen of a competition with over 700schools entered. The school and its staff arecertainly proud of them.”

On 8th March, Year 8 students showedsupport for International Women’s Daywhich celebrates the social, economic, cultural and political achievements ofwomen.During their assembly the boys heard howso many women and girls across the worldare still unable to reach their full potential;how they lack access to a proper education, family planning facilities, safe homes andcareer opportunities. The students showeda real understanding of issues that preventgender equality. Promotion for the eventand support is needed until every femalehas these things and more. Many students were also keen to sign thepledge on the White Ribbon campaignwebsite which promises to speak up andstand against violence towards women.

Ms Grimmer Head of Year 8 said,“International Women’s Day is a chance forus to connect women’s struggles in the UKand across the world. It is vital that weencourage boys and men to stand insolidarity with women and girls to highlightinequalities faced by females nationally andglobally. Here at Ark William Parker it isimperative that our boys are made awareof and encouraged to support suchmovements, helping them to develop intowell informed young men with respect andcompassion for others. Gender equality willbenefit males as well as females and theidea that unity is a powerful tool for changeis as true now as it has ever been.” Year 8 students pictured above with#BeboldForChange selfie cards from thecampaign.

The Ark William Parker football teamshowed great perseverance, faith andrespect when they achieved a place in thesemi-finals of the County Shield. The Year 10team won 3-2 against Oriel High in Crawley. After waiting 30 minutes, due to the councilnot marking out the correct lines, the gameeventually got under way. The Parker teamhad a few chances to score but so did OrielHigh and it was the hosts who took the leadtowards the end of the half. Parker still hadreal hope that they could win; they didn'tlet their heads drop and continued tocreate chances. After their team talk at half time, Parkershowed a great amount of team spirit bycreating their own huddle to geethemselves up. This clearly showed in theway they played in the second half whenthey came out really fired up; they could

have been level but again the hosts brokeaway and scored a second. After going behind, Parker pulled a goal backthrough Finley Page. This now provided areal sense of perseverance in the team andthey had a belief that they could win. Aftersustained pressure Jaden Gerrish thenequalised and sent the game into extra time.Another team talk and they were motivatedto get the winner which Finlay Page scored.Parker then really started to play withconfidence and could have scored more buteventually settled for a 3-2 win to moveinto the semi finals of the County Shield.Coach Mr Morris said, “The Year 10 footballteam were an absolute credit to the schooltoday both on and off the pitch. Theyencompassed all of our core values as aschool and fully deserved the win.”

The expedition is the time that students getto put all their Duke of Edinburgh traininginto practice. A key element to success isobviously not getting lost. Students spend anumber of sessions learning aboutnavigation from using six figure gridreferences, bearings, pacing and routeplanning. With students divided into their teams ofsix or seven they are given a starting gridreference, a lunch grid reference and afinishing grid reference, from this they mustplot their routes and produce a route card. Each day has to have a separate route cardwith the students having to walk for sixhours; this is one of the most challengingtasks given to them. They must take intoaccount speed of walking with heavyrucksacks on, gradients, terrain, distance oflegs and change over times and time forplanned stops to carry out their projects. All timings and distances have to be

accurate to ensure safety and confidence intheir navigation ability. This task is the first of many whereteamwork and collaboration come to theforefront. Each member of the team mustcontribute to both the planning and the onthe ground navigation so there is noopportunity for sitting back and being apassenger. With no GPS or in car satellite navigation tohelp them they are fully responsible for thesuccess of their expedition. The time spentplanning will show on the day.

A story by Year 8student - Alfie WoodAs the darkness of the clouds creptover the horizon, the frightening fistof fear gripped our crewmen. All of asudden, our fragile boat was beingthrown around by the cruel sea, which had seized us in its briny grip, tossing us from side to side. While the waves galloped towards us,our helpless boat screamed for help!As the tempest grew, the fist of feartightened its grip. Our crewmenpanicked, fearful about what wasgoing to happen.Suddenly, the galloping waves beganto grow, thundering towards us at anincredible rate. These waves weredoubling their size every second.Soon these waves are going toswallow us whole. This is not how Iwanted to go down, staring into themouth of a terrifying wave…..

Year 7 FootballThis is our Year 7 football enrichment, the boys love to come up and enjoy playing afootball tournament in house teams... there is always a lovely calm atmosphere with theboys showing great sportsmanship and etiquette when competing for the Year 7enrichment championship title.

Pond and Beyondby Alex, Year 8As part of our Academy enrichment programmewe are working on sprucing up the garden areaand pond, awaiting the arrival of our ducklings.Mallards start to pair up in October andNovember, and start to nest in March. They prefer to nest near water, we have a pond, and the duck generally makes her nest wellcovered in vegetation or a hole in a tree.Mallards exploit open water where food is plentifulhowever this sometimes results in the choice of less than perfect nest sites, particularly intowns. Nests have been found at our pond in discarded newspapers and bags. The female builds a nest from leaves and grasses and lines it with down plucked from herbreast. Eggs are laid between mid-March and the end of July. The normal clutch is about12 eggs, laid at one to two days intervals. After each egg is laid the clutch is covered toprotect it from predators. If you stumble upon a nest full of eggs leave it well alone, it is unlikely to be abandoned. The laying period is very stressful for the female as she lays more than half her bodyweight in eggs in a couple of weeks.
