particular needs of parents in mind. The

College places high value on the involvement

of parents. We are aware that a number of

items of information and guidance provided to

students within College are also of use and

importance to parents.

The College prospectus provides much

basic information and you will also receive

newsletters and other communications whilst

your son or daughter is enrolled at College.

Every student in College has access to the

Student Portal and this provides a lot of

detailed information for students.

Please contact your son’s / daughter’s

Personal Tutor or Head of Section or a

member of the Senior Leadership Team if

there is further information or advice that

you need, or an issue that you wish to discuss.

Charter For ParentsWewelcomeyourinvolvementasparentsinthelifeoftheCollegeandthe

opportunitytoworkwithyoutowardsthesuccessofourstudents.Ifwehave

concernsaboutyourson’s/daughter’sprogress,wewillcertainlywishtodiscussthis

withyouand,wherenecessary,willcontactyoutoarrangeameeting.Ifyouwishto

discussanythingwithus,pleasecontactyourson’s/daughter’sPersonalTutoror

HeadofSection.Wewillrespondtoyourrequestwithinthreeworkingdays.

OnceyoursonordaughterhasstartedCollege,youwillhaveaccesstothe

parentportalwhichwillcontaininformationonyourson/daughterincludingtheir

timetableandattendance.Informationonhowtoaccesstheportalisgivenon

page15ofthisbooklet

Whileyourson/daughterisstudyingatCollege,youwillreceiveprogressreviews

orreports.Weissueatleastthreereviewsandonereportforallstudents.We

willinviteyoutoparents’consultationeveningstwiceperyear.Thefirstparents’

eveningwillbeinNovember.AseparateHigherEducationEveningisofferedto

parentsofYear1studentsintheSpringTermoftheirfirstyear,followedupby

aHigherEducationSurgeryinSeptemberofYear2.Wealsokeepintouchwith

youthroughourparentnewsletterandoneparentrepresentsyourviewsonthe

College’sCorporation.Anyparenthastheopportunitytostandforelectionfor

thispositionwhenavacancyarises.

Ifyoufeelunhappywiththeservicethatweoffer,pleasegetintouchwithus

toshareyourconcerns.Ifthematterisseriousandyouwishtoraiseaformal

complaint,youshouldinitiallycontactthePrincipal’sPA.Youwillreceivea

Bexhill College CorporationTheCollegeCorporationcomplieswiththeArticlesandInstrumentsofGovernance

laiddownintheHigherandFurtherEducationActof1992anditistheCorporation’s

responsibilitytoensurethattheCollegeadoptsappropriatestrategiestoachieveits

missionasaSixthFormCollege.TheCorporationcomprisesof13members,includinga

Parentmember,aStudentmemberandaStaffmember.Manyofthemembershave,in

fact,hadexperienceofbeingaparentofastudentstudyingatCollege.Membersofthe

Corporationareallvolunteersandarenotpaidfortheirduties.

Membersmeetatleastfourtimesayearasawholegroupandagooddealoftheirworkis

delegatedtosixcommittees.TheCommitteesmeetaccordingtoneedandthisvarieswith

thecommitteeinquestionbetweentwoandfourtimesayear.MembersvisittheCollege

TimetableThetimetableisdesignedtoprovidestudentswithasmuchflexibilityaspossible.Students

negotiateindividualprogrammesofstudywiththeirHeadsofSectionandthistimetable

maywellbedifferentfromeveryotherstudentintheCollege.

Theweekisdividedintoseventeachingblocks.Moststudentswillhavesomenon-contact

timeeachdayforstudying.SomeactivitiesmaytakeplaceafterCollege.Thisapplies

particularlytoclubsandrecreationalorextra-curricularactivities.

Course ChoicesTheCollegeoffersarangeofcoursesfromLevel1toLevel3.Themajorityofstudentsare

studyingAS/A2,IBorBTECNational/ExtendedDiplomaProgrammes.Thesestudents

taketheequivalentoffourcourses,BTECNational/ExtendedDiplomascountingasthree.

SomestudentsfollowaoneyearprogrammeofGCSE’sorBTECFirstDiplomas.

Somecourseshavespecificcosts,wherepossible,informationisprovidedincourse

handbooks.

Value Added and Target gradesStatistically,thebestsingleindicatorofhowastudentwillperformatASandA2levelistheir

achievementatGCSE.Anumberoforganisationshavedevelopedsystemstoenableschools

andcollegestoanalyseAS/A2Levelvalue-addedperformancerelativetoGCSE.TheGCSE

resultsofeachstudentcanbeconvertedtoanaverageGCSEscorebygivingascoreof8for

anA*gradetoascoreof1foragradeG.AnaverageGCSEscoreof5.5thereforeindicates

thatastudent’saverageGCSEishalfwaybetweenagradeCandaBgrade.

ThistypeofdataisusedinsystemssuchasALPS(ALevelPerformanceSystem),andallows

theCollegetotakeintoaccounttherelativeGCSEabilityofstudentsandfindouthowour

studentsperformedatAS/A2Level,relativetoothersixthformcolleges.Italsoallowsusto

identifywhichstudentshaveexceededtheirtargetsandwhichhaveunder-achievedatAS/

A2LevelandtopredictrealistictargetAS/A2Levelperformancelevelsfornewstudentsin

College.GradesatGCSEandAS/A2cannotbedirectlycompared.Thenationalaveragedata

illustratesthatstudentswhoaverageagradeCatGCSEwillneedto‘over-achieve’inorder

togetbetterthanaD/EgradeatAS/A2Level.Further,itpredictsthatstudentswhoachieve

gradeAorA*atGCSEshouldnotautomaticallyassumethattheywillachievegradeA’sat

A2orASLevel.Weusethisprocesstogivestudentsaminimumtargetgradeatthestartof

theirstudies.Studentprogressismeasuredagainstthisgrade.

foritsstudents.TheEnrichmentProgramme

Functional Skills, english and Maths gCSe

InlinewithGovernmentPolicy,theCollegehasacommitmenttodevelopliteracyand

numeracyskillsofitsstudents.Ourstudentswillbeworkingtowardsachievingaminimum

ofaGradeCatGCSEinEnglishandMathsorequivalenteitherthroughGCSEor

FunctionalSkillsiftheyhavenotachievedthisgradeatschool.

Progression From Year 1 To Year 2InorderforstudentstoprogressfromanAScoursetoanA2Levelcoursetheywillneed

toachieveapasstogradeEintheirASLevelexamination.Studentswillalsoneedto

demonstratesatisfactoryattendanceandcommitment.Itisessentialthatstudentsattend

CollegefrommidJunetotheendofthesummerterm.A2workwillcommenceduring

thisperiodandworkwillbesetforthesummerholiday.DuetochoicesmadeafterAS

examinations,studentsmaybeindifferentteachinggroupsforA2.Somestudentswishto

changecoursesattheendofthe1styearandmakeanewstart.Thesestudentswillalso

berequiredtoattendlessonsattheendofthesummerterm,toshowcommitmenttoa

secondyearatCollege.

Tutorial ProgrammeEverystudentintheCollegeisamemberofatutorgroupand,asamemberofthat

group,participatesintheTutorialProgrammeaspartoftheirprogrammeofstudy.This

programmeaimstodevelopstudents’abilitytomonitorandimprovetheirownacademic

progressandtoresearchandplanformovingonafterCollege,andalsotoacquirea

greaterawarenessofsocial,healthandeconomic-relatedissues.

external examinationsA2andASLevelsubjectsareassessedinmodulesthroughexaminationandcoursework.

Studentswilltakepublicexaminationsinthesummerofeachyear.Thereforethereis

afocusonexamworkfromthestartoftheirtimeattheCollege.ASandA2Levelunits

canbere-takenonce,thefollowingsummeronly,buttheCollegewillonlypayforthe

examination/assessmententryfeeforthefirstattempt.

Resits

ASqualificationsareaggregatedattheendofthecourse.Studentsshouldbeawarethat

Universitiesareprovidedwithdetailsonallresitsbytheexamboardsandtherefore,

itispreferabletodowellonthefirstsitting.Studentsareadvisedtoseekguidanceon

decisionsrelatingtoresitsofASunitsfromspecificsubjectstaffortherelevantHeads

ofSection.GuidancewillbeavailableonresultsdayandduringenrolmentinAugust/

SeptemberofeachyearandHeadsofSections/PersonalTutorswillalsoadvise.

Payment For examinationsTheCollegepaysexaminationorcourseregistrationfeesforallstudentswhoareunder

19atthebeginningoftheircourse.However,ifoverallattendanceisbelow95%covering

thewholeofthestudent’scourseatthetimeofexamentryand/orregistration,students

willbechargedforexamsand/orcourseregistration.Thiscanamounttoinexcessof

£130.Seriouslongtermillnessandhospital/medicalappointmentsmustbesupportedby

amedicalcertificate.Theseabsenceswillthenbeexcludedfromthecalculationof95%.

Minorillnesswillcountagainstattendance.

Routineappointmentsatdoctors,dentists,opticiansordrivinglessonsshouldbemadein

thestudent’sowntime;theseabsenceswillcountagainstthe95%,aswillholidaystaken

duringCollegetermtime.Wewillaimtokeepparents/guardiansadvisedabouttheirson/

daughter’sattendanceifitisacauseforconcern.

Careers InformationTheCollegehasitsownCareersAdviserandawell-resourcedCareersLibrary,whichis

openforstudentuseduringtheCollegeworkingday.Adviceandguidancetakeplacein

smallgroupsoronaone-to-onebasis.IndividualappointmentstoseeaCareerAdvisercan

bemadeattheStudentServicesOffice.

Atutorreferralmechanismisalsooperatedbutmanystudentsselfrefer,usingthe

servicetomeettheirneedsasappropriate.Students’primaryaccesstoCareerseducation

isthroughtheTutorialProgramme.One-yearstudentsarecarefullyguidedthrough

theyear,withallstudentsundertakingaspecialprogrammewithindividualguidance

interviews.

AlloptionsafterCollegeareaddressedincludingemployment,returningtoCollegeand

otherFEoptions.ForASandA2Levelstudentsthereisacomprehensiveprogramme,

guidingstudentsthroughtherecruitmentprocessesforEmploymentandHigher

Education.

Inspection ArrangementsTheCollegeisinspectedregularlybyOfsted.TheCollegeproducesaSelf-Assessment

Reportannually,whichissharedwiththeCorporationandrelevantGovernmentagencies.

ThelastfullInspectionReportwaspublishedinDecember2010.Copiesofthisare

availableonrequestfromtheCollegeordirectlyfromtheOfstedwebsite.

Pastoral care in collegeTheCollegecontinuestomaintainitsstrongcommitmenttothesupportandguidanceof

theindividualstudent,primarilyviathePersonalTutorwiththesupportoftheHeadof

Sectionandotherseniorstaff.Wewishtoworkcloselywithparentstoensurethesuccess

andwellbeingofourstudents.TheCollegeCounsellorsmeetwithindividualstudentsby

appointment.AppointmentscanbearrangedthroughtheStudentServicesoffice.Where

necessary,orwhereitisinthebestinterestsofthestudent,theCollegemayalsodrawon

theprofessionalexperienceofexternalagencies.Thiswouldnormallybeinconsultationwith

parents.

Communication with parentsInacomplexorganisationitisveryimportantthatthereshouldbegoodcommunication.

Parentsarekeptinformedofimportantinformationregardingtheirson/daughterand

Collegeeventsinavarietyofways.TheParentsNewsletterisproducedtwiceperyear

andwillbepublishedontheparentportal.Toregister/logontotheportal,parentsneedto

Use of Non-Contact TimeAllstudentsintheCollegewillfindthat,withintheoverallCollegetimetablearrangements,

theyhaveacertainnumberofblocksfreeeachweekwhentheyarenottimetabledfor

classes.These“non-contactperiods”offerthemachancetoorganisetheirownworkand

tostudyinCollege.TheCollegeprovidesanumberofareasforprivatestudy.TheCollege

LearningResourcesCentreisamainareaforsupervisedquietstudy.Practicalsubjects

alsoprovideareasforstudentstocontinuewiththeirownworkortopracticeoutside

lessontimes.Studentsshouldbestudyingfor15-20hoursperweekoutsideoflessons

eitherathomeorinCollege.

Part-Time WorkWerecognisethatmanystudentshavepart-timejobsandmaygainpersonalandfinancial

benefitfromthem.However,westronglyrecommendthatstudentsshouldnottakeon

morethan10-12hourspart-timeworkperweekduringtermtimeperiods.Research

showsthatanymorethanthiscanaffectfinalgrades.

Trips and VisitsArangeofeducationalandrecreationalvisitsisofferedforwhichyourconsentisalways

required.TheCollegewillkeepcoststoaminimum.Parentalpermissionissoughtbefore

anytriporvisit,regardlessoftheageofthestudent,andstudentsareexpectedtomakeup

anymissedwork.

Absence /AttendanceTheCollegeexpects100%attendance.Allstudentsareexpectedtoattendalllessonsand

tutorialontimeirrespectiveofwhentheyhavenon-contactperiods.

AbsencefromCollege,whenknowninadvance,shouldbenotifiedtothePersonalTutor.

Ifstudentsareabsentweaskthestudentortheirparenttotelephone,emailortext

theCollegebefore10.00am.TheCollegeisafulltimeestablishmentandstudentsare

requiredtoattendalltimetabledlessons.Absencemustalwaysbeexplained.Prolonged

absenceorunexplainedabsencewillinvolvecontactwithparentsandcanresultin

discontinuationofastudent’sprogrammeofstudy.

Ifstudentsleavethepremisesduringlessontimesandwillmisslessonsasaresult,they

mustsignoutatReception.

Absenceswillbecheckedregularlyandstudentswhofailtoattendclassesortutorial

eitherthroughabsencefromCollegeorlatenesstoCollegecanexpecttheirparentsto

becontacted.Furtherinfringementsmayleadtoformaldisciplinaryproceduresbeing

implemented.

Absence MarkingAbsenceswillaffectthepercentageattendanceasoutlinedbelow:

Accepted absences are those which the college approves. Many are foreseeable in

College BursaryTheCollegehasalimitedamountofmoneyprovidedbytheGovernmenttoawardfor

bursaries.Studentscanapplyiftheirfamilyincomeisbelow£25,000andappropriate

evidence,asdetailedinthebursaryinformationguidelines,canbeprovided.Thebursary

applicationisassessedbytheCollegeandawardedifthecriteriaismetandthereare

adequatefundsavailable.Entitlementtomaketheapplicationisnotaguaranteeof

funding;ourallocatedfundsarelimited,sosupportwillbeawardedtostudentswho

demonstrategreatestneed.Thediscretionaryfundswillprovidesomehelptostudents

withfinancialdifficultieswhoincurexpensesrelatedtotheiracademiccourses;for

example,anessentialeducationaltrip/visitorbuyingspecialistmaterials/equipment.

Astudenthardshipfundisavailableinemergenciesonly;requests,whicharetreatedwith

sensitivity,shouldnormallybemadedirectlytoStudentServices.

OurinformationbookletoneligibilityandguidelinesforcompletingaBursaryFund

ApplicationisavailableonourwebsiteorfromtheStudentServicesOffice.

holidays During Term Time SixthFormstudents’programmesaredemandingandthetimeavailabletopreparefor

examinationsandassessmentsisrelativelyshort(around30weeks).Studentsshouldnot

takeholidaysduringtermtime.Ifstudentsrequireleaveofabsenceduringtermtimethis

requestmustbesupportedbyparents.ItwillalsoinvolveconsultationwiththeHeadof

SectionandthecompletionofaHolidayRequestForm.ItshouldbenotedthatallYear1

studentswillbeexpectedtoreturntoCollegeinmidJuneaftertheirexaminationsand

thataround12%oftheteachingforA2Levelcourseswillbescheduledforthemid-June

toJulyperiod.ItwillbeaconditionofprogressionintoYear2thatthestudentsattend

theselessonsandsatisfactorilycompletethework.

Returning To CollegeStudentsjoiningtheCollegeforaone-yearcourseareentitledtore-applytoCollegeto

studyanadvancedprogramme.ApplicationsaredealtwithbytheAdmissionsteamduring

theSpringTermanddecisionsare,wheneverpossible,madepost-results.Academic

achievements,potentialandinterest,togetherwithaprovenlevelofcommitmenttostudy,

willbeassessedwhenHeadsofSectionmakedecisions.

StudentswhohavecompletedtheirALevelprogrammeandwishtoreturntoCollegeto

repeatanALevel,possiblyincombinationwithsomenewcourses,canapplytodoso.A

place,however,isnotguaranteedandwilldependonastudent’spreviousattitudetostudy

andavailabilityofcourses.TheapplicationprocedurenormallytakesplaceinlateAugust

/earlySeptember.Theprogrammeusuallylastsforonefurtheryearofstudy.Application

formsarerequired.

What We expect of StudentsAswellasappreciatingstudentrightsandopportunities,itisimportantthatstudentshavea

clearunderstandingofourrequirementswhichwillenablethemtomakeasuccessoftheir

timewithus.Wethereforeexpectthatallstudentswill:

• Acceptresponsibilityfortheirownlearningandacademicprogresswiththesupportof

theirPersonalTutor,HeadofSectionandSubjectTutors.

• Completeallsetworktotheirbestabilityandbytherequireddate,aswellasgiving

appropriatetimetobackgroundstudy,widerresearchandexaminationrevision.

• Attendpunctuallyalldesignatedactivities.

• Explainanyabsences.

• Maintainanacceptable,courteousstandardofbehaviouratCollegeandwhileengaged

inactivitiesassociatedwiththeCollege.

• Ensurethattheirbehaviourandattitudeneverhaveadetrimentaleffectonthe

academicprogressofotherstudents.

• FollowtheCollegeEqualityPolicywithregardtoallstudents,membersofstaffand

Collegevisitors.

• AbidebytheCollegepoliciesincludingthoseonHealthandSafety,IllegalSubstances,

SmokingandConsumptionofAlcoholandneverknowinglyendangerthehealthand

physicalwell-beingofothers.

• RespectandthushelptomaintaintheconditionoftheCollegebuilding,propertyand

generalenvironment.

• AbidebyanycodeofconductissuedduringaCollegetriporvisit.

• FollowanyinstructionsandguidelinesissuedbytheCollegeanditsstaff.

StudentsshouldacceptasnecessaryanyappropriateactionstakenbytheCollegeifthe

Illegal SubstancesNooneisallowedtoconsumeorpossessillegalsubstancesonCollegepremises,oratany

stageduringtheCollegetimetableddayoratCollegeeventswhetheronoroffsite.Any

studentfoundusingordealinginillegalsubstanceswillbesuspendedpendinganinvestigation,

asaresultofwhichthestudentmaybeaskedtoleavetheCollege.Thepolicewillbeinformed

accordingtoourlegalobligations.

Smoking/use of e-cigarettesStudentsarestronglyadvisednottosmokeasitisveryharmfultohealth.Intheinterests

ofhygieneandthehealthofall,forthosewhomakethechoicetosmoke,smokingand

useofe-cigarettesisonlypermittedintwoclearlydefinedexternalareasoftheCollege.

Smokinganduseofe-cigarettesisnototherwisepermittedwithinCollegebuildingsorany

otherpartoftheCollegesite.

exclusionTheCollegeiscommittedtotheprovisionoffirstclasslearningopportunitiesforall

students.Itmaybenecessary,inaverylimitednumberofcases,toexcludeastudent

College environmentStudentsattendingtheCollegehavethebenefitoffirstclassspecialistsixthform

colleges.IntheinterestsofthewholeCollegecommunity,werequestandexpectstudents

tomaintainhighstandardsofcareforthephysicalenvironmentatalltimes.Inparticular

weaskstudentstoobserverestrictionsregardingconsumptionoffoodanddrinkoutside

ofdesignatedareasandthatstudentsdonotbringchewinggumtoCollege.College

studentshavesethighstandardsofcarefortheirenvironmentinthepast.Ininstances

Safety ProceduresTheCollegehasafullsetofsafetyrulesandprocedures.Studentsareinstructedto

followtheserulesandinanemergencytofollowtheinstructionsofmembersofstaff.The

CollegeHealthandSafetypolicyisissuedtoallmembersofstaffandisalsoavailableto

studentsandparentsifrequested.Intheeventofafireoranyotheremergency,analarm

willsoundandeveryonewillbeaskedtoleavethebuildingimmediatelyusingthenearest

exit.Firepracticestakeplaceatleastonceaterm.

Parking For ParentsTheCollegeispartofaGreenTravelPlanandthereforeparkingisverylimited.There

willbelimitedparkingavailableforanyparentsatParents’EveningsorOpenEvenings.

IfparentsorvisitorshavemobilitydifficultiestheyshouldcontacttheCollegeinadvance

Participationbyemployersandlocalagenciesisencouragedtohelpfurtherour

partnership.Thismaytakeplacethroughsubjectactivities,theTutorialProgramme,

CollegeactivitiessuchastheCareersAcademy,oraspartofourCareerseducationand

guidance.

Data Protection ActUndercurrentlegislation(DataProtectionAct1998),parents/guardiansofstudentshave

arightofaccesstopersonalinformationstoredbytheCollege.Parents/guardiansmay

requestacopyofallthepersonalinformationheldontheirson/daughterbycontactingthe

CollegeDataProtectionOfficer.InlinewiththeAct,theCollegeDataProtectionOfficer

willarrangefortheinformationtobecollected,duplicatedanddeliveredtotheparent/

guardianwithin40days.TheCollegewillchargeafee,asspecifiedbytheAct,ofbetween

£20and£48,dependingonthequantityofinformationproduced.
