Survey reveals newmothers are being
treated unfairly in the work enviromentTHOUSANDS of new mothers are beingforced out of their jobs every year because of discrimination in the workplace, a new studyhas suggested.
A survey of over 3,200 women found thatone in 10 had been dismissed, made compul-sorily redundant or treated so poorly theyhad to quit their job.
The Equality and Human Rights Commis-sion said its research suggested that around54,000 new mothers were losing their jobsacross Britain every year.
The research, carried out in partnershipwith the Business Department, also foundthat one in five new mothers experienced har-assment or negative comments from their col-leagues, employer or manager when pregnantor returning from maternity leave.
One in 10 said they were treated worse bytheir employer when they returned to workafter having a baby, and seven per cent re-vealed they were put under pressure to handin their notice.
When mothers were allowed to work flex-ibly, around half said they received feweropportunities at work or felt their opinionwas less valued.
One in 20 mothers said they received a cutin pay or bonus after returning to their job.
Thousands of employers were also sur-veyed, making it the largest of its kindaccording to the commission, with mostmanagers saying they were firm support-ers of female staff during and after theirpregnancies.
Around four out of five employers saidpregnant women and those returning frommaternity leave were just as committed totheir work as their colleagues;
Two thirds of employers said they do notthink pregnancy puts an unreasonable costburden on the workplace.
Caroline Waters, deputy chair of the EHRC,said: “This research reveals the worryinglevels of discrimination and disadvantage atwork that women still face today. Not only isdiscrimination unlawful, but it is also bad forbusiness.
“That’s why today we’re launching a majorinitiative to bring this issue into the publiceye, improve awareness of the law and workwith business and other groups to find work-able solutions.”
TUC general secretary Frances O’Gradysaid: “This shocking report shows that manyemployers are in denial about the scale of pregnancy discrimination in their work-places.
“Becoming pregnant should be one of thehappiest times in a woman’s life, not a periodof anxiety and stress.
“These findings must not be swept underthe carpet. The current culture of bullying, harassment and ill-treatment that many fe-male workers experience must be consignedto the past.
“Today’s report should also act as a wake-upcall to ministers. If they want more employ-ers to comply with the law they shouldn’tbe charging women up to £1,200 to pursue apregnancy discrimination claim.”
Justine Roberts, chief executive of Mum-snet said: “The scale of the discriminationrevealed by this research is shocking, butsadly it comes as no surprise.
“Despite legislation designed to protectwomen from discrimination in the workplace,it’s clear that in many cases, companies aresimply not following the rules.”
Cathy Warwick, chief executive of theRoyal College of Midwives, said: “It is verydisturbing that the rates of discriminationagainst pregnant women are so high. Dis-crimination at work can cause stress, anxiety
and depression which can potentially have animpact on the health of the woman and herbaby.
“It is very worrying that the cases of women being denied time off to attend ante-natal care are increasing. Women who missantenatal appointments miss out on essentialscreening tests and valuable advice aroundsmoking and nutrition.
“Evidence shows that missing antenatal ap-pointments can increase the risk of smallerbabies, premature babies, miscarriages and
still birth. This is particularly imwomen with complex health need
“Government must act to ensurewomen are not denied their rightare not discriminated against. Thto costly implications for the NHSimportantly it can have potentialing effects on the health of the woher baby.”
A Government spokesperson sathe overall picture shows employto support women it is troubling tsome are still facing problems at wwill use this research and the fullwhen it is published, to inform fumaking.
“The EHRC will be undertakingwork, including producing an emtoolkit which will help employersmanage a member of staff ’s pregnwill also raise awareness with emthe best ways to support their sta
Steve Williams of the conciliatioAcas, said: “It is clear from this vasearch that businesses need to treworkers fairly as this will help thewithin the law.
“We have published a new guidepregnancy and maternity discrimFrom next month we are also launseries of equality guides to help eand managers identify, tackle anddiscrimination in the workplace.”
Shadow women and equalities mGloria De Piero said: “These are ting findings.
“Labour established laws to proin the workplace from being pushbecause they are pregnant or takenity leave but this Government haharder for women who suffer discto seek redress.”
