Employees in nancial services industr

are the most at risk of bad heart healthBRITAIN’S financial servicesindustry workers are in theriskiest professions in thecountry, with 48 per centadmitting to being overweightand 23 per cent notching upbetween nine and 10 hours atwork every day.

A total of 95 per cent of the profession admits to atleast one of the following:smoking during the work-ing day, suffering from heartpalpitations/a racing pulse,excessive eating/drinkingor weight gain as a result of their job, not being active dur-ing the working day, workingmore than a nine-hour day,

or not finding time to see thedoctor due to working hours.

YouGov research, commis-sioned by Flora ProActiv,further reveals that thoseworking in Britain’s financialservices sector find gettingto the doctor hard because of their job.

Some 22 per cent blame theirworking hours for makingit harder for them to see thedoctor. This may leave them atrisk of not monitoring many

conditions; among them,cholesterol and high bloodpressure. Left unmonitored,these conditions put sufferersat risk of strokes and heartattacks.

Media, marketing, advertis-ing, PR and sales comes in asthe second most dangerousprofession for heart health,as 90 per cent of employeesreveal they match at least oneof the “danger” criteria listedabove.

Official statistics from theBritish Heart Foundationshow that coronary heartdisease is the biggest killer inthe UK, with someone struck

by a heart attack every threeminutes.

Dr Rob Hicks, a practicingdoctor who specialises inhealthy living, said: “Havingregular medical checks is avital part of staying healthy.High cholesterol is a keyrisk factor for heart diseaseand can contribute to heartdisease by causing the build-up of fatty deposits in yourarteries.

“This can only be detected

by a routine blood test. Otherfactors, which contribute toheart disease include highblood pressure, diabetes, age,weight, family history andethnicity, smoking, alcoholconsumption and stress.

“Several actions can help re-duce these risks, including anactive lifestyle, a healthy dietand lowering your cholesterolby reducing fat consumption,and eating plenty of fruit andvegetables.

“However, a large propor-tion of the nation is ignoringhealthy lifestyle advice, noteating healthily and workinglong hours each day without

taking steps to look after theirhealth.”
