This is my third semester at CCSF, but this is

my first time to take a class about the model

design. Actually, I was a little nervous at the

first day I went to the architecture design. But

during I study in this design class, I think I

will find a way to know the design terms.

Page 5: ARCH 101 Mid-term Portfolio spring2014 Jun Ning

Objective:

The first assignment is a construction cannot exceed a

volume that is 8.5 inches wide*11 high*6 inches deep.

During study Malevich’s composition, especially for the

possible ways in which the elements and sets of elements

can be interpreted as three-dimensional form and occupy

three-dimensional space as an abstract sculptural piece.

Consider what materials may use to fabricate these

inspired forms and select the materials need to based

upon what can best communicate the design.

Design Process:

For doing this project, I am trying to use the paper to make some different and fun

things. I used multiple tapes of squares to make this project. I am trying to give this

square’s size or shapes have some visible change, but still keep them

transformation. I let this project not just has the vertical or horizontal lines; I am

trying to use some different angles to present a creative composition. I also use a

lot of different color’s paper to make this project has more fun and interest. When I

began to make this composition, I really did not know what I should do at first.

Then I just printed a big image of the Malevich’s “Suprematist Composition 2” to

look and think. I use the different angle to look at this image, and think about what

I could find from this image. Then I just choose a part of the Malevich’s

“Suprematist Composition 2” to begin my project. I tried to make this project as

similar as the image of the Malevich’s “Suprematist Composition 2” look like, and

I am trying to use the different tapes of repetition to present this composition. I am

trying to let every part of this project is independent, and make them easily to move

and change.

Reflection:

Actually, this assignment was a little bit challenging for me.

At first I did this project, I was really have no idea about what

should I do, what I could made. Then, I just started from one

part to do this assignment. From I began to do my project,

then I found a lot of ideas for my assignment. I think, just go

to begin to do it, then I will get more and more improvement

for myself. Actually, I think my constructed composition still

have a lot of things need to be improved in this time. However,

I really pay a lot of attentions for this project, I tried to do my

best on my first constructed composition.

Page 11: ARCH 101 Mid-term Portfolio spring2014 Jun Ning

Objective:

For this assignment, it is need to study about how to write the

instruction for the design elements. First, need to use the cardboard to built a sample composition. Then, trying to use some sample words and sentences to write a instruction for this element. Maybe can draw some images in the instruction too. Trying to make this instruction clearly for the person who need to read it.

Page 12: ARCH 101 Mid-term Portfolio spring2014 Jun Ning

Process:

At first, I write my instruction not so good, I just write some

ideas about my element, like how did I think about my project.

That really made my partner so confused about how to use my

instruction to built a composition. Then, I change a way to

write the instruction. I write the instruction during I built my

project. I am try to write the instruction step by step, and draw

some images for every step. Then, I finally found a way to

write a better instruction.

Reflection:

During learning how to write a clearly instruction for the

composition, I also found some ideas about improve my design

study. Like, I have a more clearly way about how to design my

element, and know what should I do on my element.

Page 16: ARCH 101 Mid-term Portfolio spring2014 Jun Ning

Learning Outcome:

From study how to draw with charcoal, this also help me a lot on

my design study. Using charcoal to draw on paper is faster than use

pencil to draw. Learning to use charcoal really helped me can draw

out my thought on the paper fast, and during the drawing to find

some ideas about how to design the model.

Objective:

1. Reevaluate the selected 3+ adjectives-pick best

2. Write down the dictionary definition

3. Use thesaurus to find the synonyms and antonyms

4. Possibly reevaluate the selected adjectives from the assessment of synonyms

5. Identify real objects that exude qualities selected (this can be 3 for each word, or 1 exhibiting all 3 qualities)

6. Print out #5

7. Trace over the real objects and highlight the selected design elements and make annotations as to why it shows the quality you selected (from the: form, proportions, shapes, space, lines)

8. With #6 (hypotheses) Create 12 (as many as you want) thumbnails that best evoke selected 1st quality

9. Use best selected and using charcoal, place onto one sheet (18" x 24")

10. Prepare/document/organization and reflection

First element

Page 24: ARCH 101 Mid-term Portfolio spring2014 Jun Ning

Process:

I try to use the same squares to built this project, to show the repetition. I

use the different angle on this element, use the change of the angle to

show the energetic meaning. I also use the different color on this project,

I change the color when I change the angle. I try to use this to make this

project creative.

Learning outcome:

Need to use more changes on this project, not just the sample change on

the color and angle. Also need to think about how to show the energetic

on a design model.

Connect th

ject to life

Page 26: ARCH 101 Mid-term Portfolio spring2014 Jun Ning

Process:

I try to built my element connect with the meaning of life, try to think

about how to connect the qualities I selected with the model. I want to use a tree to show the life, cause I think the life just like the tree, whatever you put the tree in where, it just absorbs the water and sunshine to grow. And I put some steps on the tree, it just like a stair, like every step on my life.

Learning outcome:

Need to know how to start at first, and how to make a change. Need to

think about the project’s inside, not just look at the outside of the

element.

Page 29: ARCH 101 Mid-term Portfolio spring2014 Jun Ning

Process:

For this element, when I do this project, I try to think it from a small part.

At first, I choose the “L” as the shape I used. Then I just made a lot of

this shape, just repeat this. Next, I put them together, just like a line. At

the end, I go to intertwining them together, it is like the life is a lot of

little things happen, then build a life.

Learning outcome:

Still need to think about the changing in the design model. Need to know

what should change. Maybe I can make the shape have some change on

the size and color on my next element.

Although each assessment in this class need to take lots of

time on it, I still have a lot of fun on these. I think my

constructed composition still have a lot of things need to be

improved in this time. However, I really pay a lot of

attentions for this project, I tried to do my best on my every

constructed composition. During this, I begin to know what

is the design meaning, and how to make a good design.
