Library fun

Paper… it’s not just to write on! While ‘researching’ for important library stuff on Google (yes even librarians love Google!)we found the most amazing person. Gus Santome is a paper engineer who lives in Argentina (a long way away). He creates awesome paper-toys and when he found out about Sunshine Coast Libraries he offered to create our very own paper toy. The stencil is on page 11 so you can build your very own Library Troll paper-toy.

We had a chat with local author Chris Collin who showed us his new book A Bug Called Doug.

Unfortunately Doug escaped so we need your help finding him hiding in Kids News.

We are celebrating all things Dahlish too. Roald Dahl’s Charlie and the Chocolate Factory is 50 years young this year! It’s also the official Roald Dahl day in September so grab one of his books and discover the world of Oompa-Loompa’s, Snozzwanglers, giant peaches and big friendly giants.

And of course there are reviews, puzzles and movie news to keep you up-to-date with the latest fun stuff. Happy reading!

Don’t forget to check the library website for all the fun things coming up over the next couple of months. Lots of new books too!

So to celebrate we thought we’d find out more about Roald Dahl and his books.

• He was born on 13 September 1916, in Wales.

• He did not start writing for children until he had children of his own.

• His favourite colour was yellow.

• He wrote all of his children’s stories in a small hut at the bottom of his garden.

• He was an intelligence officer and a flying ace who flew Hurricane jets during World War II.

• He could speak three languages: English, Norwegian and Swahili.

• He wrote the screenplays for Chitty Chitty Bang Bang and the James Bond movie You Only Live Twice. All up he wrote around 47 scripts for movies and TV shows.

• He loved chocolate, but not chocolate cake or chocolate ice cream.

• He always wrote in pencil on yellow paper.

• He was really really tall 6ft 5 inches.

This year is a really big year for all things Dahlish! 2014 marks the 50th anniversary of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. Steven Spielberg has just announced he is making The BFG into a movie and on 13 September it’s the official, annual Roald Dahl day.

Just a few of his most popular stories include:

• Charlie and the Chocolate Factory

• Charlie and the Great Glass Elevator

• Matilda

• James and the Giant Peach

• Fantastic Mr Fox, Danny the Champion of the World

• George’s Marvellous Medicine

• The Enormous Crocodile

• The Witches.

If you have a look in our catalogue you’ll find we have lots of copies of all his titles in either books or eBooks. We also have copies of movies like Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and Matilda.

The tales of Roald Dahl

His favourite colour was yellow.

Did you know that the sequel to Charlie and the Chocolate Factory is Charlie and the Great Glass Elevator?

Epic DiemIt’s almost here! Get your favourite costume out of the cupboard or create a whole new one and come to the Epic Diem Nerd Culture Expo on Saturday 27 September. The best part is if you are under 12 years entry is free!

The day will be filled with anime, cosplay, all kinds of games, wrestling, comics and lots lots more.

We will be there in our mini library called The Vault. Inside The Vault you can borrow books, join the library, watch anime, make some cool paper toys and best of all, meet Isobelle Carmody. Isobelle has kindly agreed to come visit us and have a chat in the morning. This is your big chance to ask her why she writes, how she writes and how does she get all those fantastic ideas for all her books.

LolWe asked and you sent. Here are some awesome jokes from Zoe (aged 12).

Q What’s the difference between a train and a teacher?

A A teacher would say ‘spit that bubble gum out’ but a train would say ‘chew chew chew’.

Q What can run, but can’t walk; has a bed but does not sleep; and has a mouth but never eats?

A A river

Q What sort of music do miners listen to?

A Rock and coal

Q What did the fence say to the house?

A I’ve got you surrounded

Q What was the name of the first underwater spy?

A James Pond

Joke sent in by us

Q Why don’t skeletons fight each other?

A They don’t have the guts.

Had to add our own joke. ED.

Do you have a joke to share?

Send your jokes to any Sunshine Coast Library and share the laughter.

Chris is a local author of one of our favourite picture books, Funky Chicken. He’s also just released his second book, A Bug Called Doug. We thought we’d ask Chris some hard hitting questions about writing, drawing and any future plans he has.

Have you always been a writer?

Ha ha no. My ‘apprenticeship’ for writing children’s stories is 25 years in civil construction. I have always enjoyed writing funny whacky stories and after a few major events in my life I decided at age 48 that I would follow my passion and do what I truly wanted to do.

Do you write and draw?

I cannot draw to save myself. I get the kids to draw their own funky chickens when doing writers workshops in schools and invariably their chooks look much better than my funky chickens even though I get to do them over and over again.

Who is your favourite character so far… Funky Chicken or Doug the Bug?

I knew you’d ask that question. I love both characters. They are entirely different. Doug is very quiet and gentle whereas the chook is a bit of a show off.

Did you base the characters after anyone you know?

No but I have been told I look a little like Funky Chicken when my hair needs cutting and it’s a windy day.

Do you have an idea for your next book or is it top secret?

I’ll tell you if you promise to keep it a secret. There are two more Funky Chicken books in the pipeline and a couple of other stories too. One is very special and I definitely can’t give you any details ha ha.

Meet Chris Collin

Find Doug the Bug

Chris Collin let out his new character Doug the Bug to show us but he escaped. He’s now hiding all through Kids News. Can you find him seevn times?

The Forbidden Library By Django Wexler

When Alice’s father goes down in a shipwreck, she is sent to live with her uncle Geryon – an uncle she’s never heard of and knows nothing about. He lives in an enormous manor with a massive library that is off-limits to Alice. But then she meets a talking cat. And even for a rule-follower, when a talking cat sneaks you into a forbidden library and introduces you to an arrogant boy who dares you to open a book, it’s hard to resist. Especially if you’re a reader to begin with. Soon Alice finds herself inside the book, and the only way out is to defeat the creature imprisoned within.

Alien Encounter By Charise Mericle Harper

Nine year old Morgan is fascinated with aliens. Morgan meets new kid Lewis as Lewis is hanging from a tree by his underwear (that’s a ‘killer wedgie’). The pair of nine-year-old boys are propelled into an adventure that may or may not involve otherworldly creatures. When the boys return to the scene of the ‘killer wedgie’ for an ‘underpants picnic’, they are terrified by a slimy alien life form.

Fluff Dragon By Platte F. Clark

Max Spencer is your typical wimpy kid from our Earth, who just might become the world’s most powerful wizard but he’s no Harry Potter. When he’s not trying to avoid getting eaten by a man-eating Unicorn, singed by Fire-Kittens, or destroyed by a Zombie Duck, he’s making you laugh out loud. I think just about anyone would love this book. It’s funny, imaginative, silly, and you can’t put it down.

New books

Did you know every week we get loads of new books, dvd’s, toys and magazines?

So far this year alone we’ve brought over 1400 new titles. These include books on dinosaurs and loombands, great new series from around the world and loads of picture books. We have also tried to buy all your favourite movies so have a browse in our catalogue today.

Read it Watch it!Did you know lots and lots of movies are based on books or comics? This is an awesome thing as it means you can read and watch your favourite characters or story over and over again.

Here are a few movies that will be shown at your local cinema over the next few months:

18 Sept Planes: fire and rescue

18 Sept Boxtrolls

2 October Dolphin Tale 2

10 October Alexander and the terrible, horrible, no good, very bad day

27 November Book of Life

Movie newsNext year will be huge with some of our favourite characters and films making a comeback.

Best readsHere are some of our readers best reads this year.

Biddy (aged 10)

Author: Andy Griffiths

Illustrator: Terry Denton

Book: 26 Storey Treehouse.

Characters:

• Terry: crazy awesome, he is pretty dumb and funny. Annoying!

• Andy: practical, cool and likes to take charge.

• Jill: Loves animals, sensible, funny, approachable.

What happens: Terry and Andy live in a treehouse. They go on adventures and tell the story of how they met and the story of their life. They meet a pirate called Captain Woodenhead who captures them and comes back and tries to invade their treehouse.

My favourite part was when Andy was explaining how he and Terry met.

If I could be any character from the book I would choose Terry!

He is awesome and crazy, fun and adventurous. He likes lots of the same things I do. He’s willing to do most things and he is awesome at drawing.

In case you didn’t know there is a 13 and 39 storey treehouse too. ED.

Honey (aged 7)

Author: Sue Whiting

Book: The Strange Little Monster and the Swamp Goblin.

Characters:

• Sasha: a different monster from the others. All she wants is to practice her flute.

• Bunion the swamp goblin: a naughty goblin who steals Sasha’s flute.

What happened: Sasha wants to play her flute for her grandpa on blue moon night but Bunion tricks her and steals her flute. Sasha is sad but she comes up with a clever trick of her own.

My favourite part is when Sasha puts her plan into action.

If I could be any character from the book, I would choose Sasha. She is different, clever and special.

If you like magical books why not try reading these series too:

• Sisters Grimm by Michael Buckley

• WondLa by Terry DiTerlizzi

• Goblins by Philip Reeve

• Septimus Heap by Angie Sage

• The Forbidden Library by Django Wexler (coming soon). ED.

Zoe (aged 12)

Author: Paul Jennings and Andrew Weldon

Book: Don’t look Now. Book four.

Characters:

• Ricky: can fly and is desperate to be famous.

• Samantha: best friend to Ricky, doesn’t believe he can fly.

• Ricky’s dad: can fly too and teaches Ricky to fly better.

What happens: Saving chickens from a flood, escaping a raging bushfire and impressing Samantha are the least of Ricky’s problems. Ricky wants to be famous but is finding it difficult to fly without being seen. As soon as a living thing sees Ricky flying, he drops out of the sky.

My favourite part was when Ricky flew Samantha to safety from the bushfire.

If I could be any character from the book, I would choose Samantha.

Even though she is blind, she is kind and considerate.

If you really want to laugh out loud when you are reading a book you should really try the whole series. ED.

Step one In the tray add one part cornflour with one part baking soda. For example if you are using a cup put the same amount of cornflour as baking soda. The more you use the bigger the tray you need. Mix well.

Step twoFill water pistol with vinegar.

Step 3Sprinkle food colouring over the cornflour and baking soda. For even more fun, add fragrance and glitter too. Experiment with different measurements of food colouring. The more you add the more colourful your goop will be.

Step 4Squirt the vinegar onto the mixture. Watch as it erupts into a colourful mess. Let the goopy gun begin.

When you’re finished get mum and dad to help you discard your goop into a bag and into the bin. Don’t put it straight down the kitchen sink.

Your ingredients

• Baking Soda

• Cornflour

• White vinegar

• Food colouring (any colours you like)

• Fragrance (optional)

• Glitter (optional)

• Small water pistol (You could also use a spray bottle

and try different positions on the

nozzle eg squirt or spray to see

what that does)

• Large tray

Scientrific facts• The longest river in the

world is the Nile River. It reaches 6650 kilometres in length.

• Cutting onions releases a gas which causes a stinging sensation when it comes into contact with your eyes. Your body produces tears to dilute the irritant and remove it from your eyes.

• The fastest land animal in the world is the Cheetah, which can run around 113 km per hour (70 mph).

• The flame from a candle typically burns at around 1000 degrees Celsius (1800 Fahrenheit).

• Earth has been recycling water for over four billion years. That means we drink the same water as woolly mammoths, the first humans and King Tut.

• There are around 1900 volcanoes on earth that are still active, which means they could still erupt.

• Electric eels can produce strong electric shocks of around 500 volts for both self-defence and hunting.

• Sneezing with your eyes open is impossible.

• According to Science Kids the trickiest tongue twister in the English language is apparently ‘Sixth sick sheik’s sixth sheep’s sick’.

• There are more stars in the universe than sands of grain on every beach in the world. That’s billions of trillions.

• All of the blood in your body travels through your heart once a minute.

• Belly button lint is made of clothing fibers, hair, and dead skin cells.

We’ve been in touch with Argentinian artist Gus Santome and asked him where his paper engineering skills have taken him.

What is paper engineering? (according to you)

Is designing a paper object, in your head first, then the blueprints and finally in the physical assembly.

Never works the first time, second if it works it serves to refine details and the third is usually the end but you can infinitely continue testing, everything can be improved.

How did you get started?

As a kid I was creating my own paper toys from the Transformers, the animated series. I was a big fan of that show and the toys hardly came to my country (I’m from Argentina, in the south of South America, yes, very down).

I don’t remember if any of my designs worked fine but I loved to imagine them and transform them. I made them with graph paper from Math class.

I didn’t do anymore paper things, until I saw when I was an adult via the internet that many people created their own paper-toys even from transformers. Many would have had a similar start – the need to make our own paper figures.

At that time I worked at a video game company and started making paper toys from the characters of our videogames, but only for my workmates.

Then I did a blog and uploaded the mini paper toys from Street Fighter and Harry Potter.

I was surprised as the blog started to have visitors from many parts of the world, which motivated me to do more.

Paper engineering sounds impressive and it is. It’s kind of like Origami (paper folding) except paper engineering takes making something out of paper to a whole new degree by folding or cutting it so you can make a 3D object, have pop-ups or even tabs to pull out. People all over the world have been using paper or cardboard to make incredibly awesome things.

Tips and tricks from Gus Santome

Do you hand draw everything, or is everything digital?

I draw all by hand with a mechanical pencil. I have my sketchbook that I carry everywhere but I used to give the final touches in digital. My sketches are becoming less detailed as long as I dedicate more work to digital.

Where did you get the idea for your paper toys?

In my country the toys are expensive and I tend to be a collector. If I buy one I must have the complete collection which is impossible due to prices and supply. I started making my own paper toys to lower that consumer anxiety when I can’t buy the dolls from a successful franchise and then end stored in some drawer.

And I think that’s what so many people are looking for too.

What companies have you worked for?

I usually work in the video game industry, doing illustrations and animations for Facebook and mobile games. I have commissions for paper toys but it really is a hobby for my spare time.

If you want to create some of Gus’s paper toys, have a look at his blogspot below:

www.minipapercraft.blogspot.com

Have fun making the troll he created just for us at Sunshine Coast Libraries!

motivated me to do more.
